Important Feedback from Members at BONENT Booth in Vegas

“Z” Receives President’s Award

This year’s NANT Symposium was recently held in Las Vegas. The conference was well attended and the program’s focus was on changes stemming from the new CMS law.

Board Directors Zelma Griffin, Sue Critchfield and RJ Picciano were at the BONENT display booth provides an opportunity to meet current and potential BONENT members. “Life in the BONENT booth was very busy from the time the doors opened. We had non-stop traffic at the booth”, said RJ Picciano.

Almost everyone that stopped at the booth was excited about the new federally-mandated certification. All felt that now they would get more respect from their co-workers and patients.

Many were happy that BONENT has made it easy for them to access so much information on the web site – especially information on maintaining their certification and the new CBT (Computer Based Testing) program.

Some of the questions to the BONENT representatives were:

• IfIamcurrentwithmyBONENTcertificationthenamIincompliancewiththenewlaw? The answer was yes.

• HowcanItellifmycertificationisup-to-date? The answer was to call the BONENT Executive Office and they will be happy to assist you by checking all aspects of your personal information on the database.

• IamBONENTcertified.CanIproctoranexam? The answer was yes. Please go to the BONENT web site at www.BONENT.org and download the Host Form (located at the top under “Hosting Exams”). If you need any additional assistance the BONENT Executive Office will be happy to help you.

BONENT also hosted a lunch with BONENT Regional Representatives (see below) who received BONENT materials to take back to their units and to others in their region.

“It was an honor to present to Board Director Zelma Griffin (above right) this year’s President’s Award”, said RJ Picciano, BONENT President (above left). “Zelma, known by many as “Z”, has worked tirelessly proctoring exams and speaking at renal meetings throughout the country. And, as Chairman of the Regional Repre-sentative Committee, she has worked with the BONENT Executive Office to increase our list of Regional Representatives by 50 percent.”

Certification UPDATE Winter 08-092

FROM THE PRESIDENT

An Exciting Time for Our Specialty & BONENT!We have seen how the recent mandate for dialysis technicians to become certified has positively affected collaboration with other members of the health care team. Nurses, doctors, social workers and nutritionists in dialysis settings have been working with technicians to help them fulfill the requirements for certification.

BONENT has been working with our Regional Representatives from different states to schedule exams, ensuring that technicians fulfill the requirement for certification before the mandated deadline. If there are no exams scheduled in your area, let us know and we will work with you to have your area covered.

We also provide computer based testing (CBT) in U.S. cities and many cities around the world. This method of examination seems to be getting popular as more and more candidates each month are submitting applications to be tested through this medium.

The process that leads to a BONENT certification emphasizes a technician’s training and qualification. It has been a BONENT tradition for thirty-five years to require that candidates are actively engaged in practice before they sit for the exam. This has benefited the candidates and our specialty.

It is the consensus of our members that once they become certified they notice increased job satisfaction, greater recognition and compensation. Technicians who are concerned about becoming certified should call the BONENT office for more information.

The continual professional development through contact hours enables the technicians to maintain the knowledge and skills necessary for the delivery of quality patient care. Certification and recertification enables the dialysis technicians who are life-long learners to keep up with new technology and remain current in an evolving health care environment.
