For the Love of the Game 2013 camper Joel Ehrendreich’s jobs have taken him all around the world, and the one thing that goes with him where ever he goes, is his love of baseball. “Baseball has been in my blood since childhood. I love everything about it,” he said. Joel, a diplomat since 1994, is currently the Economic Counselor, U.S. Embassy Manila. His posts have taken him to the Philippines, Singapore, India, Japan, Australia, and Togo, West Africa, as well as Washington, DC. In 2007, while in New Delhi, India, Joel led the Embassy’s Little League program. It’s during that time he met a local baseball coach who ran a program for about 100 kids and noticed one thing; “They loved the game.” While he got the local kids included in the Embassy’s Little League program, he knew someday he’d be leaving India; so he decided he needed to do something to get the local youths established in their own program. As you might imagine, baseball equipment is nearly impossible to find in India, mainly because cricket is the country’s sport of choice. But that didn’t stop Joel; he asked his friends for help. “I got in touch with my baseball friends from high school, who enthusiastically collected about a garage full of equipment,” he said. “Major League Baseball also was generous in helping us. Word spread, and soon I was getting a few donations from people I had never met.” Before he left India, the local club had grown to about 500 participants and is still going. Joel says he’s been involved in baseball at every post, and “right now I’m trying to get some equipment to give out here in the Philippines.” One of the nice perks of Fantasy Camp is getting autographs of our favorite Brewers. But Joel has collected a uniquely eclectic array of autographed baseballs during his travels. “The best thing about my job is the people I get to meet,” he said. My prized possession is a baseball signed by the Dalai Lama. When he signed it, he said “I’ve never signed a baseball before”, so at least at that time it was the only one in the world.” Joel also worked in the White House Situation Room for a couple years, and has a signed-ball from every president since Ronald Regan. While working at the White House one day, “President Bush had all the living Hall of Famers over, and a Secret Service friend allowed me to sneak in and I got a ball signed,” he said. Joel was lucky enough to get a ball signed by 14 Hall of Famers, including Robin Yount. Other signed-balls in his collection include Olympians Carl Lewis and Michele Kwan, Pele, Colin Powell, Condoleeza Rice, Lech Walesa, and Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi. Joel, 49, currently lives in Manilla, Philippines, with his wife of over 22 years, Rachel, also a diplomat, and they have two boys, Cooper and Cal. As you might have guessed, the boys’ names are steeped in baseball history too. Cooper, 19, is named after Cooperstown, the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame, and his brother, Cal, 16, is named after Cal Ripken Jr. If you know what uniform number Joel is wearing this week, you don’t have to look further than his sons’ middle names for the source: Jack and Robinson. (Jackie Robinson wore #42). He says his wife condones is love affair, or as he says “obsession” with baseball. Although Ehrendreich and his family live overseas most of the time, they do have a place in the USA to call their home—you guessed it: Cooperstown, New York. Joel, who has been a “die-hard” Brewers fan since 1970, ranks seeing Robin Yount’s 3,000th hit from the standing-room only section at County Stadium as his favorite Brewers moment, and his favorite Brewer of all- time is Lenn Sakata. While Fantasy Camp brings us all together this week to honor our beloved team, Joel views the game he loves like this. “I’ve found baseball to be a connection to people from around the world.” Nicely said, Joel. Keep On Winning...Finally Winning After Tuesday’s games, Gets Some and Catch-22 were undefeated, while the California Quakers and the Latin Connection were toiling at the bottom without a victory. By the end of yesterday’s slate of games, one team pulled ahead to stand alone atop the leader board, while another is lonely at the bottom. In the morning session, Gets Some was in for a battle as they took on Buy a Vowel. Both teams were scoreless going into the bottom of the fifth when Gets Some put up the first two runs of the game, highlighted by RBIs from David Froehlich and Jim Stephenson. Buy a Vowel answered in the top of the sixth inning with a run-scoring double off the bat of Bruce Meyer. After a scoreless bottom of the sixth for Gets Some, Buy a Vowel took the lead with two runs in the top of the seventh, one run on an RBI single off the bat of Scott Abrams. But Gets Some’s ‘it ain’t over ‘til it’s over’ attitude launched a come-from-behind win, capped off by a walk-off RBI single from Pete Parker, driving in Robert Slak who had tied the game earlier with an RBI of his own. Unlike the close game Get Some pulled off to keep their undefeated season alive, Catch-22 had a much easier road to stay on the winning end of the standings. Led by Brannon Guyette’s 3 for 3, 4 RBI day which included a third inning grand slam, Catch-22 pounded out 15 hits in the 17-7 romp over Coooop. The first five hitters in the batting order were a combined 9 for 18, with 12 RBI. Batting leader Jim Plaisted couldn’t keep his 1.000 average intact, but still had a very productive game, going 2 for 3 with 3 RBI. Only one thing was certain when the California Quakers met the Latin Connection in the morning game: One team would get off the schneid. The Latin Connection scattered seven hits and scored only two runs, but that was all they would need to defeat the Quakers 2-1, and join the ranks of four other teams with at least one victory. Dennis Johnson and Sara Miller each drove in one run to give the Connection their 2-0 lead. Bob Zuckerman cut the lead in half with an RBI single to draw the Quakers within a run, but that’s all they could muster, and remained winless. On the other end of the standings spectrum, Gets Some met Catch-22 in the afternoon, each with their eyes on a 4-0 start and sole possession of first place on the line. Before Catch-22 knew what hit them, Gets Some was up 8-3 after 4 innings of play. After scoring two runs in the fifth inning, Catch-22 made it interesting by scoring five runs in the bottom of the frame to draw within 2 runs at 10-8. Gets Some scored two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to pull away and win 15-8. In the victory, Gets Some smacked out 21 hits, with Randy Rautenberg leading the way with four. Eight other batters had two hits each in the win, and Anthony Peltier along with David Lonsdorf each knocked in two. In the other two games of the afternoon, Coooop had five players with at least three hits, highlighted by a 4 for 4 and three RBI performance by Tim Webber to help power his team to a 13-8 victory over the Latin Connection and hand them their third loss of the season. The Quakers almost got their first victory, but couldn’t hold a three run lead, giving up four runs in bottom of the sixth for a 8-7 loss to Buy a Vowel. What will today’s games hold? Will Gets Some keep getting them all? Will the Quakers finally taste victory? Does it get any better than this?
