Treble Bridge

Playing “In The Box”

Many tunes can be played in a “box” between the position markers. Experiment with tunes in the “D - Box”, and the “G - Box.”

Helpful Hints:

• Learn the names of the strings. It will help you learn the tunes faster....

particularly in a workshop setting.

• Hold the hammers, loosely, between the thumb and index finger. Bounce the

hammer, lightly, on the strings, using a wrist motion. To develop a good technique,

don’t use the full arm ... this increases you chances of error.

• Alternate hammers. Plan your hammering patterns so that you cross over the treble

bridge with the hand thats closest to the bridge. This keeps your hammering smooth.

Being aware of this will keep you from having to resort to an awkward movement.

• Practice scales and arpeggios ... these not only will help you become familiar with

your stringboard, but you will use scales and arpeggios to add embellishments to the

melody of the tunes.

• Listen to lots of recordings of the style of music you want to learn to play.

• Take advantage of EVERY opportunity to play with others. This is the best way to

develop the ability to keep a steady beat and to learn new tunes.

The first 16 measures are on the right treble bridge. The second time through use the

"banjo licks" indicated in the numbers above the notes.
