The winter owering jasmine, Jasminumnudi orum will ower throughout winter whenthe weather is mild with little yellow owers onarching stems. It is easy to propagate as stemsthat touch the ground will form roots so if you

know someone with an established plant youcan beg some stems to start your own shrub.I can be left to grow un-pruned, preferably against a fence or kept trimmed to grow up a wall.

Some winter owering heathers (Ericas) willstart to ower now so look out for plants ingarden centres to add colour around the base of your winter jasmine. Hebe red Edgeis a good winter evergreen low shrub with the tips of the buds turning a deep shadeof deep pink in the coldof winter. It will grow to a low dome shapeabout 1m in diameterand 50cmtall.

Coloured bark on trees and shrubs is also very

attractive. If you have space for trees, the silver birches such as Betula ermanii with creamy ivory bark glow in the winter sun. Inter-plant with coloured stemmed dogwoods such asCornus alba Elegantissima (red stems) orCornus sanguinea Midwinter Fire (orange to redstems) and under-plant these with snowdropsand crocuses for a stunning winter show. Thiscombination would look good in a wide borderlining a drive.

Buy in rst early seed potatoes if you wantto grow new potatoes for early harvesting.Set them in a cool frost free place in the lightto encourage shoots to start growing. Thisis known as chitting your potatoes. Keepnetting over any brassicas to protect them frompigeons. Pigeons can destroy a plant in a day!

Continue to dig over new beds or bordersleaving the soil in lumps to b e

broken down by frost into acrumbly tilth ready forplanting in spring. Put a

layer or garden compostor manure on the topto help improve the

soil structure.

Q. I like to have my eyebrows waxed as it takes out all thesmall hairs that tweezing leaves behind, but my skin hasbecome very sensitive to the heat of the wax. Can yousuggest an alternative?A. Waxing is a very effective method for shaping thebrows, however the heat of the wax and the fact that thewax adheres to the skin as well as the hair can be toomuch for some peoples skin in the sensitive eye area. Q. I have tiny white hard lumps under my skin onmy upper cheeks. Can you tell me what they areand how I can get them removed?A. These little lumps are called milia andcontain keratin, which is the same proteinfound in hair and nails. Why they occur, no onereally knows but I usually nd that the clientswho come for treatment of milia often havedry, acidic skin. The lumps are located verysuper cially under the surface of the skin andsometimes disappear of their own accord, butif they are stubborn they can easily be removedwith short wave diathermy. The procedure isvery quick and relatively painless, and canbe carried out by therapists who have beentrained in Advanced Cosmetic or ElectrolysisProcedures. Alternatively, they can be removedprofessionally with a microlance.
