Gunung Mat Cincang - A Walk in the Clouds
The legendary Gunung Mat Cincang, Langkawi's
second highest peak was believed to have been
once a being named Mat Cincang who turnedhimself into a mountain. Fables aside, today the
mountain rises in a spectacular skyline of crags
that glow pink in the sunset and is part of the Mat
Cincang Range which comprises of some of the
oldest rock formations in Malaysia, dated about
2,400 million years old. Mat Cincang Mountain is a
popular tourist attraction due to having the
facilities of a cable-car, shopping complex and sky
bridge in its vicinity.
Mahsuri Mausoleum
The Mahsuri Mausoleum marks the spot where
Mahsuri was buried. It is located at Kampung
Mawat, which is about 17.8 kms northwest of
Kuah, in Langkawi. Earlier called Makam Mahsuri
(literally Mahsuri Mausoleum), Kota Mahsuri was
erected to honor the fair maiden, Mahsuri, who
was unfairly accused of adultery over 200 years
ago. Langkawi, undoubtedly, is associated with
many fables and myths, but perhaps, this legend of
the virtuous maiden is one of the most famous
legends.
As a reverential gesture, visitors are recommended
to remove their shoes before entering the
mausoleum. In the premises of the mausoleum lies
the Mahsuri's tomb, a well, an aviary and aconventional house. Beside the tomb, the whole
story of the maiden is written on a panel. The
waters of Mahsuri's well are said to have healing
properties. In the aviary, one can check out the
exotic variety of birds along with peacocks, while
the traditional house is a host to ancient artifacts
of Langkawi.
The Legendary Pulau Dayang Bunting
Every beautiful place seems to have a legend
behind, which makes it more interesting and
memorable. Literally, the name of the island
means "Island of the Pregnant Maiden". It has a
touching and fairy-tale-like legend, making the
island seems to be more mystical and amazing at
the same time.
The story of this island began when a beautiful
fairy princess Mambang Sari and Mat Teja, a man
who fell in love with the princess from the
moment he saw her. Mat Teja met Mambang Sariat the lake and he was attracted by her beauty.
Getting advices from a wise old man, Mat Teja
finally managed to win the heart of Mambang Sari.
Living happily on earth, Mambang Sari bore Mat
Teja a son. However, their happy moment did not
last any longer as their baby died after a short
while. Undergoing such a traumatic and
tremendous pain, Mambang Sari decided to lay
her child to rest in peace in the lake. At the same
time, she blessed all the childless and infertile
women to be conceivable after bathing themselvesin the lake.

Gunung Jerai
Formerly known as "Kedah Peak", this forest-clad
Gunung Jerai is a massive limestone outcrop that
rises 1200m above sea level. As the highest peak in
the state, it adds a touch of variety to the scenic
flat plains seen throughout the area. It's located
near Sungei Petani, not far from the island of
Penang. When you've been on Penang you musthave seen the Gunung Jerai (across the sea) on the
mainland.
Gunung Jerai plays a most important part in the
history of Kedah. Before Melaka became a central
trading hub, Gunung Jerai must have been a
welcomed sight, being the only visible landmark
identifiable from miles away.
Lata Bayu
This is a very old recreation area and also a
renowned spot in the northernmost part of the
country. The famous Baling area, a town where
meetings with the then Communist insurgents
were held!
The Waterfall is a finale to series of rapids ending
up with a cascades. Total height of the continuous
slide is about 30 meters high.
A beautiful pathway follows the left bank all the
way until a level plain on top of the rapids.
There is only one small vertical fall of 2 meters at
the end of this stretch.
Waterfalls can be dangerous ! Always take care
about your safety
Pantai Merdeka
Besides beaches in the legendary Pulau Langkawi,
the beaches of mainland Kedah are equally
spellbinding. Most popular is Pantai Merdeka
which has been an ideal tourist venue even long
before Langkawi's fame.
Pantai Merdeka could be the only tourist beach
attraction on the mainland Kedah. Located in
Kuala Muda district, about 60 km south of Alor
Setar, or about 26km from the town of Sungai
Petani.
Pantai Merdeka is famous for its white sandy
beach with seaside picnic spot among the locals
and the neighbouring states of Penang and north
Perak. Facilities found here include chalets, rest
house, campsite, swimming pool and food outlets.
There are adequate facilities for watersport
activities. The beach is also excellent for swimming
at high tide.
Nearby are fishing villages of Tanjung Dawai, TelokNipah and Kampung Pulau Sayak, which are also
