WHO WE ARE The Kalahari Conservation Society (KCS) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation dedicated to the conservation of Botswana’s environment. Founded in 1982, KCS has instigated, facilitated or financed conservation projects worth more than 70 million pula.
It is KCS’ Mission to drive conservation programmes that promote integrated management of biodiversity and sustainable use of natural resources in Botswana.
It is the Vision of the Society to be an organisation of outstanding repute, priding itself on partnerships and commitments that result in sustainable biodiversity conservation in Botswana.
KCS’ Mission manifests in three major objectives:1. To conserve Botswana’s biodiversity resources
and habitats;2. To leverage the economic value of wildlife
and natural resources for the prosperity of all, especially local people who reside in wildlife-rich localities; and
3. To inspire a generation of environmentally conscious citizens who strive for a healthy balance between human wellbeing (of present and future generations) and healthy ecosystems.

WHAT WE DO
The Kalahari Conservation Society aims to use environmental education, advocacy, research and project management to combat threats to Botswana’s natural environment/biodiversity resources.
Educating for a greener futureUndertaking environmental advocacy and awareness in Botswana is a core objective of KCS. The Society targets the general public, particularly schools and communities, for education activities, which have included the integration of environmental education into school curriculums, water demand management programs in schools and facilitating Community Based Organisation / Trust trainings in gorvenance and natural resources utilisation throughout the country.
Cornerstone of conservationKCS has been in the forefront of environmental information gathering and interpretation in Botswana. As a result of this factual and scientific approach, KCS is a respected voice in national and international forums where the organisation plays a key role in advocating for Botswana’s biodiversity resources.
Linking conservation and human needsBotswana wants to promote the wise utilization of natural resources and the conservation of our environment. The challenge is to provide for the needs of our people and improve our quality of life without harming the environment or reducing vital natural resources. KCS projects target this challenge through integrated natural resource management programmes that ensure stakeholder participation nationwide.
Conservation through Community Effort It is a central pillar of KCS’ environmental philosophy that communities should be involved in and benefit from environmental conservation. Through Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM), KCS has involved the communities in the conservation of the country’s rich biological resources. KCS has actively developed, fundraised and implemented CBNRM projects throughout the country. It has been the National CBNRM Forum Secretariat since 2007.
Protecting and conserving Botswana’s wildlife
Wildlife species across Botswana face threats from poaching, encroachment and fragmentation of habitat, drought, desertification, land use changes, disease and more. KCS undertakes a range of projects to protect wildlife. Projects include the establishment of Botswana’s first Anti-Poaching Unit, several wildlife research studies, human-wildlife coexistence education campaigns, land-use forums and more.
BECOMING A KCS MEMBERKCS is a membership-based organization, funded by annual member subscription as well as by domestic, regional and international grant support and donations.
