COVERSTORY | 2 | Keppel Links COVERSTORY/CLUBNEWS Words & photos by Dean Koh 27th Singapore Ladies Amateur Open Golf Championship 2016 May 24-27 A formidable display of the regions top female golf talent Traditionally a showcase of promising female golf talent from the region, this years Singapore Ladies Amateur Open Golf Championship was held over three days from May 24 to 27 on the greens of Keppel Club. It was also the first time Keppel Club has played host to the prestigious event organised by the Singapore Ladies Golf Association (SLGA). 95 participants from nine countries were divided into three divisions: Open Division, Mid Amateur Division 1 and Mid- Amateur Division 2. Over the three days of competitions, the players were blessed with good weather conditions and fostered a good sense of camaraderie. Many of them celebrated one anothers achievements and sportingly gave each other congratulatory hugs after the final day of competition. 4. 4. CLUBNEWS July 2016 | 3 | Time has passed fairly quickly this year, and were already halfway through 2016. We hope you have spent some of these wonderful moments at Keppel Club, where our staff are always ready to serve you. Editors Note The preparation of Keppels course for this event took place one month in advance, and our golf maintenance team took great pains to ensure that our greens were slick and ready for the competition. In addition, our golf team worked around the clock, and continuously met with the organisers to ensure that proceedings would flow smoothly on event day. After a close ght, Indonesias top-ranked amateur, Ms Inez Beatrice Wanamarta, 16, nally emerged as the eventual winner, having nished third in both 2014 and 2015 editions of the event. Ms Nur Durriyah, a three-time SEA Games participant for Malaysia, nished in second place and Thailands Ms Okanok Soisuwan rounded off the podium. A strong contender from Malaysia, Ms Nur Durriyah Damian. Thailands Ms Okanok Soisuwan initially led the competition but eventually finished third. They were : In your issue of Keppel Links this month, were pleased to present a major tournament in our greens the SLGA-sanctioned 27th Ladies Amateur Open Golf Championship held at the end of May. It was truly enthralling to see some of the best female golfers in the various divisions battle it out on the course, and Keppel Club had the huge honour of hosting it for the first time in our history. Our photographer, Dean, captured some of the best shots from the action and you can check out all his photos in our cover story and on our Facebook page. The sports calendar was also packed with the tennis quadrangular, dinner and the Sports Camp all taking place within the same month. In addition, our gym has been equally busy as it continues to introduce more new programmes for you. As always, July looks to be an exciting month. Mongolia Country of blue skies Keppel Club Staff, Mr Tan Kok Seng, recently went on a short trip to Mongolia with his wife. He tells Dean Koh about his adventure. The capital and largest city of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar, is surrounded by mountains and is home to 45% of the countrys population. Due to the countrys former status as a satellite state of the Soviet Union in 1924 till 1989 when Mongolia conducted its own peaceful democratic revolution, it is not surprising that the capital city has a very Eastern European feel with the grandiose architecture of many of the older buildings. There is even a Communist monument located in the south of Ulaanbaatar called the Zaisan Memorial that honours Soviet soldiers killed in the Second World War. Moving towards the outskirts of the capital city, one gets a feel of what the iconic Mongolian scenery is about: an abundance of plains, horses and traditional tents known as yurts. Those structures are reminders that approximately 30% of the population is nomadic or semi-nomadic with an integral horse culture. As the birthplace of the ruler of the former vast and powerful Mongol Empire established by Genghis Khan in the 13th century, there are no shortage of references to the conqueror. A huge monument that testifies to that is the 40m tall Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue (pictured) of Genghis Khan on horseback located at the province of Tv, which was erected in 2008. A wall motif of the Zaisan Memorial, a remembrance of Soviet soldiers killed in the Second World War. The 40m tall Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue was built in 2008. A 138-metre high portrait of Genghis Khan is depicted on a mountain here, south of Ulaanbaatar. Mr Tan observed that Ulaanbaatar is a very clean city and particularly enjoyed the scenic views of the countryside. As a dedicated man to his work at the Facilities Services department, he also took time to observe the electrical supply boxes, heating pipes of local buildings and even restaurant/pub decors during his visit to Mongolia.

CLUBNEWS | 6 | Keppel Links Keppel Clubs in-house emergency SOP course Training which could help to save lives About 40 front-line staff of Keppel Club attended the biannual emergency stand operating procedure (SOP) course held over May 31 and June 1 2016. Conducted by Security and Safety Supervisor Mr Raja Ismail, each session was two hours long and attendees learnt about the basics of first aid, as well as how to assist members in case of any medical emergencies. Keppel Club staff who attended the course had the opportunity to learn some basic injury bandaging techniques such as how to do cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and also to use an automated external defibrillator (AED). It was important for our staff to refresh their minds and practise the procedures on a regular basis, and it was also an eye-opening experience, especially for our newer staff, said Mr Ismail. He also noted that the emergency SOP course allowed Keppel Clubs staff from different departments to come together to learn important procedures that could help to save lives. First conducted in 2014, the emergency SOP course was held for the fifth time by Mr Ismail who attended fire safety and first aid courses prior to conducting the course for Keppel Club staff. 8. 8. Dance the night away Members and guests grooved to the music during the Lets Dance Party on the evening of June 11. Popular live band, Adil and Friends were back in the house to provide classic dance tunes for the participants. The great atmosphere and immersive music saw participants dancing and moving into the late hours of the evening. Several participants walked off with lucky draw prizes of red and white wine. July 2016 | 7 | Practice and research key to new skills A key figure in the Bridge community at Keppel Club, Professor Chen Chuan Chong (also known as Prof Chen) started teaching Bridge at the Club in 2009 and introduced the Precision Bidding System in the same year. We caught up with him and asked him all about the ongoing Premier Bridge League (PBL) season. KL: What is the Premier Bridge League (PBL) all about? Prof Chen: The Premier Bridge League (PBL) was initiated by Chinese Swimming Club in 2006 to provide a platform for local bridge clubs to compete as well as to foster friendship among their players. Over the years, besides Chinese Swimming Club and Keppel Club, other clubs participating (in the PBL) include Singapore Recreation Club, Singapore Island Country Club, Tanglin Club, Geylang West Community Club, Singapore By Social Events Officer Ann Kwan and Dean Koh Cricket Club, NUSS and Serangoon Garden Country Club. KL: Keppel Club have been three- time champions since the PBL started in 2006. What do you think are the key factors behind the teams success? Prof Chen: With the strong financial and moral support from our club and the enthusiasm of all our players, Keppel Club was fortunate to emerge winners thrice. CLUBNEWS KL: What makes a good bridge player? Prof Chen: Practising, practising and non-stop (research to find) new playing skills. KL: How do you usually help to prepare the Keppel Club bridge team for competitions like the PBL? Prof Chen: I help in providing my new Precision Bidding System to our players and take every opportunity to discuss with them how the hands are to be played or to be defended. 9. 9. golfNEWS | 8 | Keppel Links Wise advice from a young champion The Keppel Ladies Club Championship is set to take place at our course on July 22, with the finals happening the very next day on Saturday, July 23 this year. Reigning champion, Ms Ariel Lee, 20, won the title at last years Keppel Ladies Championship and is set to contest in this years edition again. She shares her thoughts on winning the title, as well as her preparations for next months competition. KC: How do you feel as the defending champion of the Keppel Ladies Club Championship? AL: It feels great to be the club champion, especially after losing the title a few years back, along with the subsequent medal drought. On top of that, Si Xuan is a great player who always puts up a tough fight, making winning even more challenging and exciting. KC: What makes the Keppel Ladies Championship special to you? AL: Keppel has been my home club for many years since I was a junior golfer, and participating in the Ladies Club Championship has always been a yearly commitment for me. It has always been a special event ever since I won it when I was a junior, especially when I didnt expect myself to win at that time. KC: How are your preparations like for the game? AL: I usually train four to five times a week at Keppel, and put as much work into strengthening my mental game as well. KC: Can you share with us how you strengthen your mental game? AL: I read books and articles about improving your mental game, and try to apply the tips whenever I practice and play on the course. KC: What do you think about our golf course conditions? AL: The conditions were good thanks to the hard work of the maintenance team, and I feel that its something us golfers take for granted sometimes. Overall the conditions were good, and the narrow fairways are always a challenge. KC: Can you defend your title? AL: I would love to defend my title. Also, I feel that every player has a shot at winning the title this year, and that everyone should go into the tournament believing that they can win as well. KC: Which hole is your favourite at Keppel course? AL: I like all of the holes but if I really must choose, it would be hole number 16 since I had my first and only hole-in-one there. 11. 11. The Singapore Golf Association (SGA) is set to launch the Centralised Handicapping System (CHS) for its Ordinary and Associate Members on Aug 4. The CHS will provide a modern and unified platform for golf handicapping, changing the way Keppel golfers perform their handicapping activities, and introducing consistency in calculation of golfers Handicap Index. SGA Ordinary and Associate Members must register at the SGA CHS website at chs.sga.org.sg before they can use CHS. Registration will open on Jun 20 and closes on July 25, 2016. During registration, golfers are required to fill in the data requested and indicate that they give consent to their data being collected, used and/or disclosed. This may include their name, gender, golf club(s) of which they are a member, membership number, Handicap Index, scoring records, dates and places of play. Golfers who have successfully registered and have had their membership details authenticated by their home club will be sent an email on August 4 to activate their account. They will also be requested to set their password before they can start using CHS. In addition, golfers will be required to give their consent again before activation is successful. Once this is done, golfers are free to post their scores immediately anywhere and anytime. Access Your Handicap Index and Post Scores Anytime, Anywhere Golfers will now be able to perform all their handicapping activities via multiple channels, including web, their iOS or Android devices and their clubs terminals. With such user friendly options to choose from, posting scores and checking handicaps is set to be a breeze. Figure 1: My Handicap Index. Real Time Peer Review Golfers will be able to see their fellow golfers scores as soon as they have been posted to the system. This allows you to check on your friends scores almost instantaneously. 12. 12. golfNEWS July 2016 | 11 | Little Harrys Pub Golf Challenge Co-organised by the Golf Department and Little Harrys Pub, drinking kakis (friends) and golf enthusiasts got together for a fun game of golf during the late afternoon of June 8 2016. After the game and sampling some Old Pulteney Malt whisky on the greens, participants headed down to Little Harrys Pub and had a great time enjoying food, beer and of course, whisky. Some of them even jazzed up the atmosphere with some karaoke tunes which added to the jovial atmosphere. Looking at their radiant smiles and cheery vibes, it was indeed a great time of bonding for the participants. 13. 13. golfNEWS | 12 | Keppel Links A group of Keppel Juniors participated in the Ciputra World Junior event which was held recently between May 31 and June 3 in Jakarta. The Ciputra World Junior event was held in the difficult Damai Indah golf course which is renowned for its high winds, length and slick greens. By Kuk Hun Yi, Green Committee member Ms Callista Chen, Mr Tommy Tan, Mr Arnav Arkanath, Mr Sean Lee, Mr Justin Kuk, Mr Jason Kuk and Ms Jillian Kuk from Keppel Juniors all participated in this world class event. This year, the event attracted 152 participants from 16 nations (i.e. Australia, China, Chinese Taipei, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden, Thailand, United Kingdom and the United States). There were also competitions organized across four age groups for both boys and girls division. The teams from Thailand certainly showed their strong intent by sending approximately 60 juniors from their East, West, Central and International teams that included players from their national team. The next largest team came from the host nation, Indonesia, with 46 players. There were 12 participants from Singapore who participated in 7 divisions, with six juniors from Keppel juniors. The Ciputra World Junior event certainly lived up to expectations. From the initial airport pick up, where the arriving participants were treated like VIPs, to the traditional and elaborate closing ceremony, meticulous thought had been put into the organisation of the event which had been planned for more than six months. All participants were provided with experienced caddies, who were a great help in helping navigate the many hazards on the course. From the back tees, the Damai Indah course is an extremely difficult course especially on the back nine as many of the par 4s were over 400 metres This years Ciputra World Junior was a wonderful experience for our Singapore Juniors, who were able to compete against some of the regional and worlds best golfing talents. Yet, in terms of technical skills and abilities, Singapore juniors are not far away and may even surpass the competition in some areas of our training. However, the thinness of our future pipeline of younger Singapore juniors (there was only one Singaporean representative in Boys C and Girls B and D divisions with and D divisions) was worrying. For the future of Singapore golf, let us hope that there will be more encouragement and support for Singapore juniors to train and participate in similar international events. Other results by Keppel Juniors: Ms Callista Chen 12th placing (Girls A) with three day aggregate score of 241 (+25) Mr Tommy Tan 17th placing (Boys A) with four day aggregate score of 314 (+24) Mr Justin Kuk 22nd placing (Boys A) with four day aggregate score of 322 (+34) Mr Jason Kuk 26th placing (Boys A) with four day aggregate score of 324 (+36) Mr Arnav Arkanath 8th placing (Boys C) with three day aggregate score of 249 (+33) Ms Jillian Kuk 10th placing (Girls D) with three day aggregate score of 298 (+82) in length with the back nine par 3s averaging more than 200 metres. Not surprisingly, the eventual winners were dominated by participants from Thailand who were winners in six of the eight divisions, and who contributed the top 3 finishers in five categories. This competition bodes well for the future of Thailand, especially with its strong pipeline of juniors. The major surprise of the tournament was in the Girls A division, who were playing from the white tees. After a strong first round (69), Ms Nasa Hataoka from Japan, blitzed the field by coming in 9 under with an incredible 63 in the second round, leaving her competitors, Ms Inez from Indonesia and Ms Pajaree from Thailand, essentially fighting for second place. Ms Nasa finished strongly with another under par round of 70 in the final round with an overall score of 14 (202) and it was won by a clear 15 strokes. Among the medallists, the Singapore contingent was represented by Mr Sean Lee, from Keppel, who was placed 5th in the Boys C division (243 (+27)) and Ms Anne Fernandez who was placed 4th in the Girls D division (235 (+19)). Mr Greg Anketell, the high performance coach from Golfline and Keppel, was also at the tournament to guide and motivate Keppel juniors and his students. Mr Sean Lee (third from left) and family. CLUBNEWS Movement Therapy Workshop About the Instructor Mr Hee Tan is an experienced Posture Consultant and obtained his Masters Degree training in Ergonomics from Linkping University (Sweden) & Nanyang Technological University (Singapore). He is also a Certified Rolfer professionally trained at The Rolf Institute (www.rolf.org), Colorado, USA. Mr Tan specializes in Rolfing Structural Integration, and uses it to restore freedom of movement, proper alignment and balance of body. His bodywork is effective in resolving neck pain, back pain, frozen shoulder, Scoliosis, posture and alignment issues, headache, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, sports injury and improving athletic performance. On June 18, 50 participants gathered at the Aerobic Studio for Mr Hee Tans free introductory workshop on movement therapy. Mr Tan is a certified Rolfer and an experienced Posture Consultant. The movement lesson taught at the workshop involved a series of slow, gentle, novel movements organized around a fundamental movement patterns such as reaching, rolling, breathing and bending the spine. 15. 15. On Saturday, May 21, the tennis courts at Keppel Club were filled with young tennis enthusiasts from Keppel and Tanglin Club. Friendly: Keppel Club vs Tanglin Club Juniors battle it out on the courts A total of about 40 children between 10 and 15 years old took part in the junior friendly and enjoyed playing with each other in and out of the tennis courts. Inside the courts, competitiveness and sportsmanship were qualities that were evident even though they were just kids. The youngsters showcased their tennis prowess with all their might, and it was certainly inspiring to see our very own Keppelites flying the tennis and sporting flag high for the club. 16. 16. CLUBNEWS Besides the action between the Juniors, Keppel Club and Tanglin Clubs players enjoyed an exciting tennis friendly match on Sunday, May 22. Keppel Club vs Tanglin Club . Seniors in on the action as well This friendly was held on the tennis courts of Tanglin Club. The pairings from Keppel and Tanglin played a total of 163 games and each match had a time frame of 30 minutes. A buzzer will indicate the end of the matches and the results are taken at the time the buzzer goes off. The last few matches of the day was the most exhilarating for Keppel Club as our team fended off a stiff challenge from the host to prevail by 89 games to 74. After the matches, a sumptuous dinner was served while each of the clubs convenors, Mr Kamal Ehsan from Keppel Club and Mr En Lai from Tanglin Club, gave a short speech. They also exchanged their clubs respective T-Shirts in a gesture of sportsmanship. Indeed, the event was an excellent show of camaraderie between the two clubs and the players from both sides are already looking forward to a return match at Keppel Club. Keppels Senior friendly brought together friends and teammates for a great night of tennis. 17. 17. Appreciation Dinner for our tennis fraternity Keppel Clubs recent triumph in the Inter-Club Tennis Singles League was recently recognised at a special dinner. The committee recognizes the effort and sacrifices of our tennis players, and the support from their families have been equally vital in seeing them through to success. As a result, the club held an appreciation dinner for the players on May 27th at the Seascent pavilion to honour their fantastic achievements and to reward them for a job well done. 19. 19. CLUBNEWS Osteoporosis: Prevention is better than cure Osteoporosis is a condition where there is progressive weakening of the bone due to loss in bone mass within. The resulting brittle bone is prone to fracture even with minor trauma or loading. Osteoporosis-related fractures most commonly occur in the hip, wrist or spine. Osteoporosis affects both men and women of all races. Amongst the Whites and Asians, incidence is especially high in postmenopausal women. Other risk factors include age, family history and small body build. Diet and lifestyle may also affect the development of osteoporosis. These include low calcium intake, eating disorders such as anorexia and gastrointestinal surgeries. A sedentary lifestyle coupled with excessive alcohol, smoking and use of hormonal supplements are bad habits that predispose one to osteoporosis. Supplements and therapeutic medicine can also contribute to weak bones. Typically, bone loss is asymptomatic until fracture occurs. This is an indication of structural failure in the bone. Signs and symptoms that include back pain, loss of height over time, a stooped posture, pain and swelling occurring on the affected bone. Screening tests are now available to effectively detect and monitor the density of the bone masses in the spine, hip and wrist. Prevention is the key to avert disastrous consequences of weak bones. More will be discussed in the seminar. Although the ladies did not know what to expect initially, they were in for a treat as the Kukuwa dance experience made them feel as if they had had been transported to Africa. Kukuwa is an African dance workout named after Ms Kukuwa Nuamah, an internationally acclaimed African dance performer, dance choreographer and fitness dance instructor. Experiencing the lively mix of African ethnic music and modern dance beats, the seven participants enjoyed every single moment of the one hour session despite their earlier workout. Ms Chengs background and rich experience as a Zumba fitness, piloxing and Kukuwa dance instructor definitely played a part in engaging and motivating the ladies to keep going.
