CROSSING THRESHOLDS: It is hard to believe that it has been one year since Fr. Jairo and I
were introduced to the Catholic Commu- nity of St. Francis of Assisi at the 9:30am and 5:30pm Sunday Labor Day Weekend Masses, the only two being celebrated over the course of an entire week with a capacity of 150 each and requiring sign- ups. While masks are still required today, parish life feels much more normal. Today we have four weekend Masses, M-F daily Masses, weekly opportunities to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconcilia- tion, weddings, funerals, baptisms, being able to anoint without dressing up like Ebola health workers, the ability to visit people in the hospitals, their homes and in our offices, and the ability to interact with the TFS and Pre-School children, faculty, and staff. Nearly 12 months of seemingly endless Zoom meetings, social distancing, no in-person events, the parish on lock-
down, and seeing people’s faces only from their eyes up sometimes made the past year feel like an episode out of an old Twilight Zone TV show. The most amazing thing for me was that despite all of this in the midst of a transition to diocesan clergy after 33 years of leadership by the Franciscans, you continued to support your parish in extraordinary ways. The church and school staffs were nothing less than heroic in keeping ministry and education alive and well. Outreach ministries both within and beyond the parish continued to flourish despite the challenges of a pandemic. Financially, we ended the year in the black, one of a minority of parishes in the diocese to do so. Wow! Fr. Jairo and I thank you for your wel- come and your support. We look forward to the coming year with some new initiatives and opportunities to continue strengthening who we are as a faith community as we cross the threshold into our second year at St. Francis.
Speaking of thresholds, we have a new resident living at the rectory for whom September 1 was his threshold. His name is Cong Le (pronounced: Lay), a semi- narian of the Diocese of Raleigh who has been assigned to St. Francis for the next 12 months for a pastoral year. Originally from Vietnam, his family moved to the US in 2006 and settled in Greensboro, NC. He is the youngest of eight children, with four sisters and three brothers. He first discerned a religious vocation with the Vincentian Fathers in 2012. After discern- ing that God was calling him to the dioce- san priesthood, he began formation with the Diocese of Raleigh in Fall of 2018. He has completed two years of theology studies at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans and will return there to complete his studies and priestly formation after completing his pastoral year with us. Thanks for welcoming him.

Seasons of Hope Each year, many families face the loss of loved ones who are members of the parish. Our Catholic tradition provides funeral support and now Seasons of Hope can carry that caring spirit into the difficult period that follows when grief can overwhelm. It also serves those who mourn loved ones from outside our parish community. They too may feel isolated, empty, and broken-hearted. For those searching for hope, a Seasons of Hope group is a nurturing link to the Church, the Almighty, and other people of faith who are also mourning. Come and be comforted. Seasons of Hope meets via Zoom for six consecutive weeks. Any parishioner who is mourning the loss of a loved one is encouraged to attend and invited to bring a guest. Our group is hosted by Stephen Ministers. Please join us on Tuesdays at 1:00pm, starting on September 14 via Zoom. After registering, you will receive a link for the weekly virtual meetings. The Mindful Catholic Book Club Join us for this 8-week virtual book club starting Wednesday, September 15, at 7:00pm. Just buy the book, and contact [email protected] using The Mindful Catholic in the subject line to sign up. Here’s a bit more about the book: Whether we are carrying out routine life behaviors, trying to pray, or conversing with others, the way our minds work sig- nificantly impacts how well we function. But many times we may feel like our mind has a mind of its own. • You fall into bed exhausted at the
end of the day, craving a good night's sleep, only to have your mind race in a million directions.
• Prayer is an exercise in futility, full of distractions and wandering thoughts.
• In the midst of a conversation, you suddenly realize you haven't heard a word the other person has said.
• You arrive at a destination with no recollection of how you got there.
But it doesn't have to be that way. Dr. Greg Bottaro explains how mindfulness can help us become aware of the present moment and accept it. Catholic mind- fulness is a way to practically trust God more in our lives. Instead of separating faith from day-to-day life, mindfulness helps bridge the gap so we can feel the sense of safety and peace God intends us to have.

Our Knights of Columbus council at St Francis has participated in the North Carolina Adopt-A-Highway Program since January 1, 2001. We recently re- ceived a letter of recognition on behalf of Gov. Cooper and Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Boyette thanking our organization for the dedication in keeping North Carolina roadsides clean and beautiful, including our service to protect the environment and enhance the quality of life for all North Carolinians. The DOT has continuously acknowledged our 20 year commitment in preserving the beauty and cleanliness of Leesville Road for the two mile stretch between the Durham/Wake County Line and Norwood Road. This is just one example of our commitment to charitable work and donations in the community, our parish, and the Catholic Church. If you have an interest in finding out more about joining the Knights of Columbus, please contact our Grand Knight, Steve Becker at [email protected].

This past week, when I asked one of my teachers about her weekend, she told me that it was wonderful because she got to spend 3 hours working in her garden. My reaction to her statement clearly showed disbelief and amazement! While I am in awe of her commitment to such a worthwhile cause, I know that gardening is never going to be one of my hobbies. I really admire the patience, care, and persistent green thumb that it takes to cultivate flowers and plants. If I ever had any doubts as to whether gardening was right for me, all I have to do is remem- ber back to when one of the jobs in my 3-year old classroom was a “gardener”. The student tasked with this was respon- sible for watering a couple of plants in our classroom. After several dead plants and a couple of years of trying, I came to the realization that this was not a class job which I could encourage success in my students! Coincidentally, this past week, I also heard a ministry leader discuss how the poor choices we make and the temptations we face can be likened to weeds that pop up bwtween the flowers
in a garden. Flowers, of course, can be likened to mercy, rightousness, kindess, and compassion. These are some of the things that God ask us to show others as followers of Him. Do you cultivate weeds or flowers in your garden of life? In preschool, our teachers are always looking for ways to relate various con- cepts to concrete examples in a child’s life. As I have previously written, the more relatable it is for our children, the more likely they are to remember and continue the lesson. When I was in the classroom, I, like many of our teach- ers, tried to engage multiple senses to account for various learning styles. In one lesson when we were learning about good choices and being kind as God wants us to be, I had the the students feel sandpaper and a piece of cotton. The rough sandpaper was representative of poor choices and actions that made our friends sad. The soft cotton was the opposite. When a child was being redirected after using unkind words or doing something not so nice, we talked about how he/she was being “scratchy”.
A positive word or action was reinforced with the idea of being ‘soft’ like the cotton. Everyone would, of course, rather have cotton than sandpaper! One of our teachers this week asked her students to decorate construction paper puzzle pieces. The class was able to take their own unique piece and put it together to create a whole puzzle. When one piece was crinkled or not put in carefully, then the whole puzzle could not be finished correctly. One piece could negatively affect the whole thing. As our new school year unfolds into an- other month, we will continue to help the children entrusted to our care learn how to be “flowers”, soft cotton, or well-fitting “puzzle pieces”. In this way, we can help them follow a road of loving care that Jesus offers to us and asks us to give to others. As part of The Franciscan School aca- demic landscape, the science curriculum has always played a foundational role in the lives of students inside and outside the classroom. Coupled with the technology and media programs, The Franciscan School’s newly formalized STREAM program (Sci- ence, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Math) will take science to a new level. While aligning with North Carolina, National, and Diocesan standards is an important component, the heart of the teachers truly brings science to life in a tangible and meaningful way. “I love science and see it in everything around me,” shares 6th grade science teacher Karin Kuropas. “I try to share my love and enthusiasm for science and learning in general with the students to help them see how God gave us this great gift and wants us to figure it all out.” As students travel through elementary school and into middle school, the science curriculum focuses on the three largest areas of science: life science, earth science, and physical science. These areas incor- porate science processing, scientific methods, values, and attitudes towards science. While in middle school, students receive hands-on experience through labs, class discussions, videos, indepen- dent and group work, and the science fair project.
The middle school science fair project has become something of a legend at The Franciscan School. Teachers and students spend many months preparing for the science fair project. With the support of parents at home, students focus on the scientific method of an area they have interest in, while also incorporating life skills such as proper planning and meeting deadlines. The Franciscan School principal and former 6th grade science teacher, Mike Watson says, “These skills are developed into all classes, but the science fair project really focuses on those skills. The development of critical thinking skills, analytic skills, organization, and time management are tools that will allow students further success in high school, college, and beyond.” Learning with science is often so much more than the curriculum itself. “Stu- dents often come back to visit and say they were prepared in knowledge and writing lab reports compared to their classmates,” shares Audrey Harrington,
7th grade science teacher. Harrington, who has been at The Franciscan School for 12 years, likes to introduce science concepts to her students but then have the students apply those concepts in a variety of different ways. Carolyn Moser teaches her 8th grade students with a similar strategy. In her 16th year at The Franciscan School teaching science, Moser concentrates on variety and differentiation. She provides custom designs for all activities based on the needs of her students and adapts lessons around their strengths and weaknesses. Her attitude is indicative of the environment at a school with a strong faith-based community willing to meet students where they are and challenge them to grow as they learn. “I take my job as a teacher seriously,” says Moser. “I work hard to deliver the best instruction possible every single day. This is my responsibility, and I can do nothing less for the children I teach.” We also have fun with Science every day! Watch a fun experiment our media specialist performed here ! The Franciscan School wants to collab- orate with you to achieve the goals you have for your child and their educational experience. More information can be found on our website at www.francis- canschool.org/ or contact Principal Mike Watson at michael.watson@stfrancisra- leigh.org.

Every year, from September 1st, the World Day of Prayer for Creation, to October 4th, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, churches all over the world are celebrating the Season of Creation. This is a wonderful time for us to pray, learn, reflect, and act in our call to be caretak- ers of God’s creation. This year’s theme is related to “home” – how is creation a home for all of God’s people? In the book of Genesis, God set a dome over the Earth. The word ”dome“ is where we get words such as ‘domicile’ and ’domestic’ — in other words, God puts us all — all people, all life —under the same domed roof — we are all in the house, the oikos of God. God gave humans the ministry to take care and cultivate this oikos of God. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and others have called the oikos of God ”the Beloved Community,” a community in which all of life are equally members, though each has a different role. The oikos is a home for all but it is now in danger because of greed, exploitation, disrespect, discon- nection and systematic degradation. The whole creation is still crying out. We have forgotten that we live in the household of

God, the oikos, the Beloved Community. Our fundamental interconnectedness has been at best forgotten, at worst deliberately denied. It is our hope and prayer that we can become again this beloved community of intentional discipleship. We hope to move beyond the programmatic and didactic aspects of life to the prophetic and spiritual life, to the action and way of life, which is shaped by Jesus. May we be the cham- pions to renew life, the servant leaders of all life in the Beloved Community, the oikos of God. Our St. Francis of Assisi Care of Cre- ation Ministry will provide weekly action prompts to guide through this season of creation. Last year, we also put together a wonderful resource for you and your families to enter more deeply this Season of Creation. This resource is a daily reflection guide, each week focused on a particular theme and each day a new activity, learning prompt, and invitation to grow in faith. You find all of this on the Care of Creation Ministry website: https://www.stfrancisraleigh. org/care_for_creation.

Over the last half dozen years, our parish has helped resettle two refugee families into Wake County through our partnership with the local resettlement organization called the U.S. Com- mittee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI). We now have the opportunity to help once again as USCRI begins to ramp up their resettlement efforts. Will you join our effort? We are looking for a core group of parishioners willing to lead this effort in the coming months that involve preparing an apartment with donated furniture for the family, welcoming them into the country, and providing ongoing support in the form of transportation, ESL tutoring, and mentorship. There will be orientation, training, and support of this journey from USCRI and St. Francis parish staff. You can check out our webpage, https://www.stfrancisraleigh. org/refugee/, or contact Trevor Thompson, Director of the Office of Justice and Peace, trevor.thompson@stfrancisraleigh. org with any questions.

Related to this, many of us have been glued to the news coming out of Afghanistan this past week. After 20 years of war, unimaginable violence, and so many lives lost, it’s heartbreaking to see a worsening humanitarian crisis unfold before our eyes. Our focus now must be on the safety of the people who remain in Afghanistan — American citizens, our allies, and those in danger of violent retribution from the Taliban. The U.S. has a moral obligation to help the Afghan people. We received word from USCRI that North Carolina is pre- paring to welcome Afghans who assisted American troops and are now fleeing for their safety. If you are feeling called to immediately help with housing, education, or employ- ment opportunities for these individuals who will be looking to rebuild their lives and restore their hope, please contact USCRI directly – 919-334-0072x4000 or volunteer@ uscrinc.org.

St. Francis Inn is a Franciscan Eucharistic community commit- ted to serving the poor and those experiencing homelessness in downtown Philadelphia. While attempting to meet the daily needs of the people they serve with food, clothing and hospital- ity, St Francis Inn also empowers people to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness by addressing structural injustices. They do all of this by building relationships, respecting the digni- ty of each person and restoring hope to them simply by sharing in their lives. Several St. Francis parishioners travel together by mini-van to Philadelphia a few weeks a year. We stay 5 days, living among the poorest of the poor while serving meals each day and shar- ing in daily Gospel-centered reflections about how God’s rich and healing mercy pulses through our wounded world.
