CIRCUS QUIPSBY KARL J. BISCHOFF

IF THE TRUTH were known, the goodold circus days were good because we werenot so old.

A SMART SHOWMAN knows a dream'sa dream but reality in circus business makesmoney.

HOW ABOUT the show that opened earlyin Spring? It was so cold that the announ-cer's words came out of his mouth like icecubes, they had to put them on the cookhouse griddle to thaw to find out what hewas saying.

AS I SEE IT • your creditors will want toknow when you'll come across not whenyour ancestors did.

MOST CIRCUS performers we know arethe successes they are because they give thepublic more than it expects.

from William Wotsch

In the Spring of April 1940, it was once againrodeo time at the Cleveland Arena. Col. JimEskew and his J. E. Ranch Rodeo played ourbuilding. We put up corrals in the back yard, and had to put cattle fencing around the hoc-key facilities, plus dirt for the floor. One of the big names on the program was WildBill Elliott (Gordon Elliott) the western moviestar. He was starring in the Wild Bill Hickokseries and was very popular. One day while we were sitting in our arena backyard, Wild Bill Elliott asked us where a personcould get something to eat. We pointed to asmall diner across the way and then he askedus to join him for dinner. This certainly madeus feel good, a western movie star asking us togo along and eat with him.Junior Eskew did his trick and fancy roping, and there was also Buddy Medford, Chip Mor-ris and his horse, plus the usual bronco bustin'numbers, steer wrestling, roping calves, bullriding and barrel racing. The program cost 25c and on the front was aphoto of the western star appearing with theshow. Inside were photos of a rodeo in action. It also had an article explaining the judging ofdifferent rodeo events. Then each program had a number and if thatnumber was called out during intermission thelucky person won a prize. A lot of prizes weregiven away, but the main one was a Ford V*8given away on the last day of the rodeo. That was really a bargain - a program for 25c,plus prizes and a chance on a car. You couldn'tbeat that!

ROYAL CROWN CIRCUS

An advance promotion and ticket sale accountsfor the major sale of circus tickets for the Roy-al Crown Circus. Tickets are priced from $3.50to $8.50.Krystali (Jack Master) directs the show in asmooth manner, moving from one illusion toan act, back to an illusion. He makes good ustof a miniature flame thrower in each hand, each of which sends out a flame 5 to 6 feet, with flash pots exploding wherever he points. In addition to the usual circus acts the showthis year features two specialty acts:Krystali's Kra/y Kara consists of eight minia-ture cars. One is an accordion-type auto withthe rear end standing still while the front endmoves ahead for about 30 feet, then the rearrushes to catch up with the front. Another carhas two front ends, each trying to go their ownway until they stretch out for some 20 feet. One car actually walks about the show ring, and one unit looks like a small fire truckwith a trailer and a huge siren. The trailer con-sistently gets in the way of the front end.Another feature on the show is the Royal Lep-echaun Horses, eight full grown horses meas-uring just 19 to 23 inches high. They do a var-iety of routines, then four jump over the backsof the other four, all at the same time as theycircle the ring, sort of like playing leap frog. Atthe end of the act several larger horses are in-troduced.

A QUOTE - from Wisconsin State SenatorClifford Krueyer

"It's very wrong to compare the Senate to acircus because a circus is better organized andalways knows where it's going."

il-TiFUNS-APOPPIN CIRCUS

by Parley Baer

Several times during the tatter part of theschool year, Ernestine, myself and ArthurBarrett caught Betty Wendany's Funs-A-Poppin Circus at different schools in and aboutthe San Fernando Valley in Southern Calif-ornia.The first thing to catch the eye was the neat-ness and orderliness of the show on the var-ious lots. Everything was brightly and new-ly painted, arranged in an eye-pleasing fas-hion, and side wall, bleachers and rigging ar-ranged to immediately capture the fancy ofthose attending. In addition to the general excellence of theshow itself, was the evident joy of all person-nel during the performances. With only 45minutes or an hour between shows, duringwhich time the ring, seats and grounds werecleaned up and picked up and everything wasmade spick and span for the on-coming per-formance, spirit and enthusiasm never flag-ged.Betty Wendany, herself, sets the spirit and at-titude of the show. Never a let-down, neversettling back, she makes each performanceseem like the first one of the day. Ringmis-tressing the show in an excellent clown makeup, and working as "Betty Spaghetti" shesets a fast pace, keeps it up and everyoneelse does a "quick two-four" to keep upwith her.A "family show" in fact, as well as advertis-ed, Ms. Wendany makes several "smaller"west coast shows - both current and past -look to their laurels. The performance isstrong, it's clean, it's happy and there's no"con". Several so-called showmen working

in this area could learn a lot from "Funs-A-Poppin."

Betty's talented daughter, Heidi, is a joy towatch. That she loves what she's doing ismore than evident. Hot sun, hard black-top,standing room only or a sparse handful, Hei-di is a trouper and all that it implies. She'sgreat.

Here's a line up of the performance, whichvaries only slightly from school to school.Betty Wendany greets the audience warmly, with a brief explanation as to the sponsorand the good-works of the sponsor, then goesinto her Betty Spaghetti routine (Betty notonly announces the show, fills some of thespots, but also operates the taped and record-ed music. The music, incidentally, has beenwell selected and provides very good back-ground music for all the acts. Betty's care inchoosing and in operating the turn-tablesadds much to the professionalism of the op-eration).

After Betty's intro, a fast, well-trained dogact worked by the versatile Heidi opens theshow; Magic Bag, clown number worked byeither Betty or her colleague "Silly Milly"(both Betty and Milly get the laughs); thencomes "Willie the Goat" a large white goattrained and presented by clown "Gene-Genethe Rock and Roll Machine"; swinging lad-der featuring Linda Miller, assisted by RussCamp; Tug-0-War with an assortment ofkids from the audience is presented by GeneGene; Heidi Wendany presents a slick ponydrill of beautifully matched Welsh ponies(two of the mares had foaled and their twooffspring were presented much to the delightof the youngsters).Betty and Milly alternated with "Make ItBigger" the balloon gag; Trampoline fun by

Produced by Klein's Attractions underthe management of Robert Kaltenbach thecircus has been appearing throughout thenation in spot, non-tour situations.Circus Continental is a nifty one hour, high-ly-appealing and entertaining one ring showplayed under a Leaf rented canvas big top, presenting a neat, well-dressed decor. Thecome-in clowning was handled by MiddyStreeter, Larry Rich and Phyllis Guggenheimwho also performed their shenanigans be-tween acts with several routines. The show moved without delay under thewhistling of ringmaster Bob Bellows and amusical combo headed by Warren Kime, trumpet, Harold Kremser, organ and RickSmiley, drums. A diversified series of animaland skill acts made the program appealing tochildren of all ages.Carmen del Molina, Queen of the SilverStrand, opened the order of displays with alovely and attractive performance on thelow wire. Announced as "just from the MGMHotel in Las Vegas" Carmen showed her su-perb class with a foot-propelled hoop, a twolegged table and board cola bola series.Clark's cats took the audience to the steelcage of five young, healthy and lively lions, one male, four females, who under the direc-tion of Mike and Missie Clark delighted theaudience with roll-overs, jump-overs, group

si t -ups , a walk-over Missie lying helpless onthe suspended bar, and Leoness the flag waver. A great new cat act. After a crowd-delighting clown tug-o-war fea-turing Josie, the World's Strongest Woman,Giovanni's Pi//a Surprise entertained with anovel, comic, acrobatic plate spinning act, much superior to most plate spinning seenunder canvas and in circuses. John and Christel Albert! are veteran show people who knowhow to please the public with poliched pro-fessionalism in their skill.Following the tooth-extraction gag, JohnsonsBears pleased the audience with a grouo of 4ursines. black bears whose entertainment fea-tured Bernice the Kissing Bear climaxed bythe foot-balanced flaming bar.

Carmen and Hunk Albert! returned with Alberti's Poodles (8), spirited and happy canineswho bow-wowed the audience with an ssort-ment of tricks, climaxing in the poodle modeling fashion show.Middy, Larry and Phyllis continued theirclownigans with the Baby Carriage Gag be-fore LaVonne's Cloud Swing, as good as an\slack rope swing this reviewer has seen in adecade. GERRY COTTLE'S CIRCUS CLOSES

by Jack Niblett

Gerry Catt le's Circus folded its tents for thelast time on June 7th, and the circus has goneinto a state of voluntary liquidation.Cottle, still a young man, has been presentingcircus performances for the last ten years, firstly, in partnership with Brian Austen, asCottle and Austen's Circus, and then as Ger-ry Cottle's Circus, Ltd., and built up his showswiftly, until it became one of England's lar-gest traveling shows, occasionally fieldingtwo units. Regarded by many as an innova-tor, Gerry introduced new presentations andequipment, presented large scale London sea-sons, secured many lucrative television con-tracts and organized overseas tours.During 1979, plagued by financial difficultiesGerry was forced by his creditors to modifyhis operations, and he was partially success-ful in trimming his budget.A disastrous pre-revolution Iran engagementfor which no payment was ever received, un-successful winter engagements, inflation and

taxation, and now a very poor beginning tothis years trading, with takings not sufficientto meet the weekly costs, forced the com-pany to call a meeting of its creditors with aview to liquidation. However, Cottle, with customary businessacumen, meanwhile had formed a subsidiarycompany, Gerry Cottle's Circus (1980) Ltdand at an agreed price secured all the sharesin this company, and thus acquired the as-sets. These included animals and equipment, and it is conjectured that Mr. Cottle will be-gin touring again when the time is ripe. From a personal observation 1980 is provinga difficult year for British circuses, poor bus-iness stemming from some of the reasonslisted above. However, English circus ownersare an optimistic lot, and still hope for a bet-ter second half to this season.Very keen interest is being taken in the newand expensive David Smart's Super Circuswhich is having a sixteen week's run at Bat-tersea Park, London. • it is felt by many thatthe future of big-time circus in England willbe indicated by the fortunes of this show.

Your writer and Byron Walker (P. 0. Once you are ashowman you are always infested with the de-sire to travel and perform. But what problemsawait the present day big magic show! Infla-tion, gasoline, animal restrictions, insurance, unions, inadequate stages, to name a few. Butperform he will and perform he must. The big Grabel posters are also a thing of thepast, now it's window cards, photos and news-paper publicity, so the two sheets we have arerecords of a fading age.

One poster in very snort supply is that of theGrave! Floating Piano, a show feature that hasobtained more front page publicity AFTER ashow than any other illusion. These postersare $35.00.The other poster is also a two sheet and hasthe Grabel portrait and is $25.00We also have a panel of the cannon illusion aspresented by Grabel for $10.00. (Betty adroitly manages thisso there are no losers and everyone has agood time). The next spot is the "Higher and Higher"clown gag, well known and well done byBetty and Gene-Gene; Miss Linda Miller re-turns with a Spanish web routine, then comesPapa Fred Wendany with a different and real-ly pleasing dog act. Seasoned performer thathe is Papa Fred still looks and acts as he didwhen he was with the Ringlmg show.LindaMiller presents the "Elephant Dog" a happylittle terrier in a very-well made elephantsuit. Apparently most of the kids in the SanFernando Valley had never seen this before, because every show had the young-uns of-fering shouts of delight for this number.Heidi returns at this point with her Morganstallion "Billy Tin Gun" in a well-done dres-sage routine. In spite of the fact that thehorse was working on black-top Heidi and"Billy" came off very well and at most per-formances caught this seemed to be the high

spot of the show.Clown number with the falling eggs gotstrong results and Sporty the Wonder Dogdid a High Dive and everyone worked in thefinale.

The show was pleasing to youngsters and toparents alike, and we heard many commentson the calibre of the show and the extremecleanliness of the entire operation. The smallworking crew were clean and neat, workingin light blue jump suits. They seemed to en-joy their part as much as the performers.Concessions were priced sensibly and every-one in the audience was "lickin" or "chom-pin" all the time. All in all the three of us found each perfor-mance we attended thoroughly pleasing andvery nostalhic. If ever a show deserved suc-cess this one does. Quite evidently it is pri-marily a one woman operation and Betty isthat woman. She merits success and a lotof sponors other than schools would be wiseto book Funs-A-Poppm.Long may they roll!

White elephants are a symbol of good fortunein Thailand, and by law they automatically become the property of the king.

So, the discovery of a year-old white elephantwas expected to be an occasion for rejoicingin the royal household. Instead the news hasbeen received with some restraint.King Bhumibol Adulyadej apparently is up tchere in white elephants • so much so thatthey threaten to really become "white ele-phants."

Under Thai law, all white elephants automa-tically become the property of the king. Butthe king already has a dozen white elephantsand more is not necessarily better in thesedays of thundering inflation. The care and feeding of the royal elephantsis no small matter, says the elephant expertwho has served the royal family for 50 yrs.Inflation has pushed the cost of care up to$5,000 a month, he said. And while the ele-phants are not exactly eating the king out ofhouse and home, they do consume threetruckloads of grass daily, in addition to vastquantities of bananas, sweet potatoes andsugar cane. It takes a staff of 10 to look af-ter the elephants. Not too many years ago the royal court usedto send a portraitist to paint a newly discov-ered white elephant so the king could have alook at him - or her - and decide whether theanimal was suitable for the royal herd. Todayas an economy move, a color photograph willdo.

Although described as a perfect specimen, thenewly discovered white elephant is certain toundergo rigorous scrutiny before being accep-ted.

There are it seems, three grades of white ele-phants: the pre-eminent or No. 1 white ele-phant, the "unique" and the merely rare. The newly found white elephant is said topossess the seven physical characteristics thatput him in the top class. These are whiteeyes, white palate, white tail hair, white nails, white hair, white skin and white testicles.Elephants have a long and honorable historyin Thailand. Warrior elephants, the tanks oftheir day, once saved the Thai kingdom frominvading Burmese.

But white elephants have never been trainedas fighters. Instead, because of their rareity, they are considered august omens of peaceand prosperity. Actually, of course, they arealbinos.

There is a Thai proverb that says to know awoman you must look at her mother, toknown an elephant you must look at its tail.Precisely what an elephant's tail proves issomehow lost in translation, but it helps ifthe tail is long, especially if it is a white ele-phant seeking admission to the royal circleIt's eyes should look like a cow's;Sexual vigor is also vital, regardless of whe-ther the elephant is male or female. The sexual vigor of one of the king's ele-phants - a 25 yr. old male in his prime - iscurrently a problem because all the femalewhite elephants are too young for mating, according to their keeper. It is strictly for-bidden for a while elephant to mate with anon-white.

A city institution • the Oakland, Calif., audi-torium-theatre building is in need of repairsand the City Council isn't sure it has the ne-cessary funds at this time.Repair work is need on the building's roof, and its wooden floor needs to be replaced. The job is estimated to cost $700,000.One city official reports the building usuallyoperates at a loss, and last year this amount-ed to $264,000. He said there is some talkabout tearing down the old structure. The auditorium has been the site of the an-nual Aahmes Shrine Circus each spring andhas housed a number of circuses during itslifetime.
