FOREWORD

Congratulations on your purchase of a new Kawasaki motorcycle. Your new mo-torcycle is the product of Kawasaki's advanced engineering, exhaustive testing, and continuous striving for superior reliability, safety and performance.

Please read this Owner's Manual carefully before riding so that you will bethoroughly familiar with the proper operation of your motorcycle's controls, its fea-tures, capabilities, and limitations. This manual offers many safe riding tips, but itspurpose is not to provide instruction in all the techniques and skills required to ridea motorcycle safely. Kawasaki strongly recommends that all operators of this ve-hicle enroll in a motorcycle rider training program to attain awareness of the mentaland physical requirements necessary for safe motorcycle operation.

To ensure a long, trouble-free life for your motorcycle, give it the proper care andmaintenance described in this manual. For those who would like more detailed in-formation on their Kawasaki Motorcycle, a Service Manual is available for pur-chase from any authorized Kawasaki motorcycle dealer. The Service Manualcontains detailed disassembly and maintenance information. Those who plan to dotheir own work should, of course, be competent mechanics and possess the spe-cial tools described in the Service Manual.

Keep this Owner's Manual aboard your motorcycle at all times so that you can re-fer to it whenever you need information.

LOADING AND ACCESSORIES INFORMATION

WARNING

Incorrect loading, improper in-stallation or use of accessories,or modification of your motor-cycle may result in an unsafe rid-ing condition. Before you ride themotorcycle, make sure that themotorcycle is not overloaded andthat you have followed these in-structions.

With the exception of genuine Kawa-saki Parts and Accessories, Kawasakihas no control over the design or appli-cation of accessories. In some cases, improper installation or use of acces-sories, or motorcycle modification, willvoid the motorcycle warranty, can neg-atively affect performance, and can

even be illegal. In selecting and usingaccessories, and in loading the motor-cycle, you are personally responsiblefor your own safety and the safety ofother persons involved.

NOTE○Kawasaki Parts and Accessories

have been specially designed foruse on Kawasaki motorcycles. Westrongly recommend that all partsand accessories you add to your mo-torcycle be genuine Kawasaki com-ponents.

Because a motorcycle is sensitive tochanges in weight and aerodynamicforces, you must take extreme care incarrying cargo, passengers and/or inthe fitting of additional accessories. The following general guidelines have

Page 24: Kawasaki 1400 GTR - Quick Reference Guide · 2017. 12. 5. · Kawasaki Parts and Accessories have been specially designed for use on Kawasaki motorcycles. We strongly recommend that

been prepared to assist you in makingyour determinations.1. Any passenger should be thor-

oughly familiar with motorcycle op-eration. The passenger can affectcontrol of the motorcycle by improp-er positioning during cornering andsudden movements. It is importantthat the passenger sit still while themotorcycle is in motion and not in-terfere with the operation of the mo-torcycle. Do not carry animals onyour motorcycle.

2. You should instruct any passengerbefore riding to keep his feet on thepassenger footpegs and hold on tothe grab rail. Do not carry a passen-ger unless he or she is tall enoughto reach the footpegs and footpegsare provided.

3. All baggage should be carried aslow as possible to reduce the effecton the motorcycle center of gravity.

Baggage weight should also be dis-tributed equally on both sides of themotorcycle. Avoid carrying baggagethat extends beyond the rear of themotorcycle.

4. Baggage should be securely at-tached. Make sure that the bag-gage will not move around whileyou are riding. Recheck baggagesecurity as often as possible (notwhile the motorcycle is in motion)and adjust as necessary.

5. Do not carry heavy or bulky itemson a luggage rack. They are de-signed for light items, and overload-ing can affect handling due tochanges in weight distribution andaerodynamic forces.

6. Do not install accessories or carrybaggage that impairs the perform-ance of the motorcycle. Make surethat you have not adversely af-fected any lighting components,

Page 25: Kawasaki 1400 GTR - Quick Reference Guide · 2017. 12. 5. · Kawasaki Parts and Accessories have been specially designed for use on Kawasaki motorcycles. We strongly recommend that

road clearance, banking capability(i.e., lean angle), control operation, wheel travel, front fork movement,or any other aspect of the motorcy-cle's operation.

7. Weight attached to the handlebar orfront fork will increase the mass ofthe steering assembly and can re-sult in an unsafe riding condition.

8. Fairings, windshields, backrests, and other large items have the ca-pability of adversely affecting stabil-ity and handling of the motorcycle, not only because of their weight, but also due to the aerodynamicforces acting on these surfaceswhile the motorcycle is in operation.Poorly designed or installed itemscan result in an unsafe riding condi-tion.

9. This motorcycle was not intendedto be equipped with a sidecar or tobe used to tow any trailer or other

vehicle. Kawasaki does not manu-facture sidecars or trailers for mo-torcycles and cannot predict theeffects of such accessories on han-dling or stability, but can only warnthat the effects can be adverse andthat Kawasaki cannot assume re-sponsibility for the results of suchunintended use of the motorcycle.Furthermore, any adverse effectson motorcycle components causedby the use of such accessories willnot be remedied under warranty.

Maximum Load

Weight of rider, passenger, baggage, andaccessories must not exceed 200 kg (441lb).

Speedometer and Tachometer:The needle of the speedometer and

tachometer momentarily sweeps fromthe minimum to maximum and back tominimum when the ignition key isturned to ”ON”. This checks the opera-tion of the meter needles, so if they donot operate correctly, have the functionchecked by an authorized Kawasakidealer. The speedometer shows the speed

of the vehicle. The tachometer shows the engine

speed in revolutions per minute (r/min,rpm). On the right side of the tachome-ter face is a portion called the “redzone.” Engine r/min (rpm) in the redzone is above maximum recom-mended engine speed and is alsoabove the range for good perform-ance.

CAUTION

Engine r/min (rpm) should not beallowed to enter the red zone; op-eration in the red zone will over-stress the engine and may causeserious engine damage.

Gasoline is extremely flammableand can be explosive under cer-tain conditions. Turn the keyknob to ”FSS”. Do not smoke.Make sure the area is well venti-lated and free from any source offlame or sparks; this includesany appliance with a pilot light.Never fill the tank so the fuel levelrises into the filler neck. If thetank is overfilled, heat may causethe fuel to expand and overflowthrough the vents in the tank cap. After refueling, make sure thefuel tank cap is closed securely. If gasoline is spilled on the fueltank, wipe it off immediately.

CAUTION

California models only: Never fillthe tank so the fuel level rises in-to the filler neck. If the tank isoverfilled, heat may cause thefuel to expand and flow into theEvaporative Emission ControlSystem resulting in hard startingand engine hesitation and incompliance with the emissionregulation.

genates approved for use in unleadedgasoline by the U.S. EnvironmentalProtection Agency include a broadrange of alcohols and ethers, but onlytwo components have seen any signifi-cant level of commercial use.Gasoline/Alcohol Blends - Gasoline

containing up to 10% ethanol (alcoholproduced from agricultural productssuch as corn), also known as ”gasohol”is approved for use.

CAUTION

Avoid using blends of unleadedgasoline and methanol (wood al-cohol) whenever possible, andnever use “gasohol” containingmore than 5% methanol. Fuelsystem damage and performanceproblems may result.

Gasoline/Ether Blends - The mostcommon ether is methyl tertiary butylether (MTBE). You may use gasolinecontaining up to 15 % MTBE.

NOTE○Other oxygenates approved for use

in unleaded gasoline include TAME(up to 16.7 %) and ETBE (up to 17.2%). Fuel containing these oxygen-ates can also be used in your Kawa-saki.

BREAK-IN

The first 1 600 km (1 000 mi) that the motorcycle is ridden is designated as thebreak-in period. If the motorcycle is not used carefully during this period, you mayvery well end up with a “broken down” instead of a “broken in” motorcycle after afew thousand kilometers. The following rules should be observed during the break-in period.

• The table shows maximum recommended engine speed during the break-in peri-od.

Distance traveled Maximum engine speed

0 ~ 800 km (0 ~ 500 mi) 4 000 r/min (rpm)

800 ~ 1 600 km (500 ~ 1 000 mi) 6 000 r/min (rpm)

• Do not start moving or race the engine immediately after starting it, even if theengine is already warm. Run the engine for two or three minutes at idle speed togive the oil a chance to work up into all the engine parts.

• Do not race the engine while the transmission is in neutral.

WARNING

New tires are slippery and may cause loss of control and injury.A break-in period of 160 km (100 miles) is necessary to establish normaltire traction. During break-in, avoid sudden and maximum braking and ac-celeration, and hard cornering.

In addition to the above, at 1 000 km (600 mi) it is extremely important that theowner has the initial maintenance service performed by a competent mechanic fol-lowing the procedures in the Service Manual.

Braking• Close the throttle completely, leavingthe clutch engaged (except whenshifting gears) so that the engine willhelp slow down the motorcycle.

• Shift down one gear at a time so thatyou are in 1st gear when you cometo a complete stop.

• When stopping, always apply bothbrakes at the same time. Normallythe front brake should be applied alittle more than the rear. Shift downor fully disengage the clutch as nec-essary to keep the engine from stall-ing.

• Never lock the brakes, or it will causethe tires to skid. When turning a cor-ner, it is better not to brake at all. Re-duce your speed before you get intothe corner.

• Even in motorcycles equipped withABS, braking during cornering maycause wheel slip. When turning a

corner, it is better to limit braking tothe light application of both brakes ornot to brake at all. Reduce yourspeed before you get into the corner.

• For emergency braking, disregarddownshifting, and concentrate on ap-plying the brakes as hard as possiblewithout skidding.

Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)for models equipped withABS

ABS is designed to help prevent thewheels from locking up when thebrakes are applied hard while runningstraight. The ABS automatically regu-lates brake force. Intermittently gaininggripping force and braking force helpsprevent wheel lock-up and allows sta-ble steering control while stopping.Brake control function is identical to

that of a conventional motorcycle. Thebrake lever is used for the front brakeand the brake pedal for the rear brake.Although the ABS provides stability

while stopping by preventing wheellock-up, remember the following char-acteristics:

• ABS cannot compensate for adverseroad conditions, misjudgment or im-proper application of brakes. You

Page 130: Kawasaki 1400 GTR - Quick Reference Guide · 2017. 12. 5. · Kawasaki Parts and Accessories have been specially designed for use on Kawasaki motorcycles. We strongly recommend that

must take the same care as with mo-torcycles not equipped with ABS.

• ABS is not designed to shorten thebraking distance. On loose, unevenor downhill surfaces, the stoppingdistance of a motorcycle with ABSmay be longer than that of an equiv-alent motorcycle without ABS. Usespecial caution in such areas.

• ABS will help prevent wheel lock-upwhen braking in a straight line, but itcannot control wheel slip which maybe caused by braking during corner-ing. When turning a corner, it is bet-ter to limit braking to the lightapplication of both brakes or not tobrake at all. Reduce your speed be-fore you get into the corner.

• The computers integrated in the ABScompare vehicle speed with wheelspeed. Since non-recommendedtires can affect wheel speed, they

may confuse the computers, whichcan extend braking distance.

WARNING

Use of non-recommended tiresmay cause malfunctioning ofABS and can lead to extendedbraking distance. The rider couldhave an accident as a result. Al-ways use recommended stand-ard tires for this motorcycle.

NOTE○ABS indicator light may come on

Stopping the Motorcycle in anEmergency

Your Kawasaki Motorcycle has beendesigned and manufactured to provideyou optimum safety and convenience. However, in order to fully benefit fromKawasaki's safety engineering andcraftsmanship, it is essential that you,the owner and operator, properly main-tain your motorcycle and become thor-oughly familiar with its operation.Improper maintenance can create adangerous situation known as throttlefailure. Two of the most commoncauses of throttle failure are:1. An improperly serviced or clogged

air cleaner may allow dirt and dustto enter the throttle body and stickthe throttle open.

2. During removal of the air cleaner, dirt is allowed to enter and jam thefuel injection system.

In an emergency situation such asthrottle failure, your vehicle may bestopped by applying the brakes anddisengaging the clutch. Once this stop-ping procedure is initiated, the enginestop switch may be used to stop theengine. If the engine stop switch isused, turn off the ignition switch afterstopping the motorcycle.

SAFE OPERATION

Safe Riding TechniqueThe points given below are applicable for everyday motorcycle use and should

be carefully observed for safe and effective vehicle operation.

For safety, eye protection and ahelmet are strongly recommended. You should be aware of and verifythe applicable safety regulations inforce prior to riding your motor-cycle. Gloves and suitable footwearshould also be used for added pro-tection.

A motorcycle does not provide theimpact protection of an automobile,so defensive riding in addition towearing protective apparel is ex-tremely important. Do not let protec-tive apparel give you a false senseof security.

Before changing lanes, look overyour shoulder to make sure the wayis clear. Do not rely solely on therear view mirror; you may misjudgea vehicle's distance and speed, oryou may not see it at all.

When going up steep slopes, shiftto a lower gear so that there isplenty of power to spare rather thanoverloading the engine.

SAFE OPERATION 135

Page 138: Kawasaki 1400 GTR - Quick Reference Guide · 2017. 12. 5. · Kawasaki Parts and Accessories have been specially designed for use on Kawasaki motorcycles. We strongly recommend that

When applying the brakes, useboth the front and rear brakes. Ap-plying only one brake for suddenbraking may cause the motorcycleto skid and lose control.

When going down long slopes, control vehicle speed by closing thethrottle. Use the front and rearbrakes for auxiliary braking.

In wet conditions, rely more on thethrottle to control vehicle speed andless on the front and rear brakes. The throttle should also be used ju-diciously to avoid skidding the rearwheel from too rapid acceleration ordeceleration.

Riding at the proper rate of speedand avoiding unnecessarily fast ac-celeration are important not only forsafety and low fuel consumption butalso for long vehicle life and quieteroperation.

When riding in wet conditions oron loose roadway surfaces, the abil-ity to maneuver will be reduced. Allof your actions should be smoothunder these conditions. Sudden ac-celeration, braking or turning maycause loss of control.

On rough roads, exercise caution, slow down, and grip the fuel tankwith the knees for better stability.

When quick acceleration is neces-sary as in passing, shift to a lowergear to obtain the necessary power.

136 SAFE OPERATION

Additional Considerations for High Speed OperationBrakes: The importance of the brakes, especially during high speed operation,

cannot be overemphasized. Check to see that they are correctly adjusted and func-tioning properly.Steering: Looseness in the steering can cause loss of control. Check to see that

the handlebar turns freely but has no play.Tires: High speed operation is hard on tires, and good tires are crucial for riding

safety. Examine their overall condition, inflate them to the proper pressure, andcheck the wheel balance.Fuel: Have sufficient fuel for the high fuel consumption during high speed opera-

tion.Engine Oil: To avoid engine seizure and resulting loss of control, make sure that

the oil level is at the upper level line.Coolant: To avoid overheating, check that the coolant level is at the upper level

line.Final Gear Case Oil: To avoid gear seizure and resulting loss of control, make

sure the oil level is correct.Electrical Equipment: Make sure that the headlight, tail/brake light, turn signals,

horn, etc., all work properly.Miscellaneous: Make sure that all nuts and bolts are tight and that all safety re-

lated parts are in good condition.

EMISSION CONTROL INFORMATION

To protect the environment in which we all live, Kawasaki has incorporatedcrankcase emission (1) and exhaust emission (2) control systems in compliancewith applicable regulations of the United States Environmental Protection Agencyand California Air Resources Board. Additionally, Kawasaki has incorporated anevaporative emission control system (3) in compliance with applicable regulationsof the United States Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resour-ces Board.

1. Crankcase Emission Control SystemThis system eliminates the release of crankcase vapors into the atmosphere.

Instead, the vapors are routed through an oil separator to the intake side of theengine. While the engine is operating, the vapors are drawn into the combustionchamber, where they are burned along with the fuel and air supplied by the fuelinjection system.

2. Exhaust Emission Control SystemThis system reduces the amount of pollutants discharged into the atmosphere

by the exhaust of this motorcycle. The fuel, ignition and exhaust systems of thismotorcycle have been carefully designed and constructed to ensure an efficientengine with low exhaust pollutant levels. The exhaust system of this model mo-torcycle includes a catalytic converter system.

3. Evaporative Emission Control SystemThe evaporative emission control system for this vehicle consists of low per-

meation fuel hoses and a fuel tank.

3. Evaporative Emission Control System (California)Vapors caused by fuel evaporation in the fuel system are not vented into the at-

mosphere. Instead, fuel vapors are routed into the running engine to be burned, orstored in a canister when the engine is stopped. Liquid fuel is caught by a vaporseparator and returned to the fuel tank.

High Altitude Performance Adjustment InformationHigh Altitude adjustment is not required.

Engine OilIn order for the engine, transmission,

and clutch to function properly, main-tain the engine oil at the proper level, and change the oil and replace the oilfilter in accordance with the PeriodicMaintenance Chart. Not only do dirtand metal particles collect in the oil,but the oil itself loses its lubricativequality if used too long.

WARNING

Motorcycle operation with insuffi-cient, deteriorated, or contami-nated engine oil will causeaccelerated wear and may resultin engine or transmission seiz-ure, accident, and injury.

Oil Level Inspection

• If the oil has just been changed, startthe engine and run it for several

minutes at idle speed. This fills theoil filter with oil. Stop the engine, then wait several minutes until the oilsettles.

CAUTION

Racing the engine before the oilreaches every part can cause en-gine seizure.

• If the motorcycle has just been used, wait several minutes for all the oil todrain down.

• Check the engine oil level throughthe oil level gauge. With the motor-cycle held level, the oil level shouldcome up between the upper and low-er level lines next to the gauge.

Cooling SystemRadiator and Cooling Fan -Check the radiator fins for obstruc-

tion by insects or mud. Clean off anyobstructions with a stream of low-pres-sure water.

CAUTION

Using high-pressure water, asfrom a car wash facility, coulddamage the radiator fins and im-pair the radiator's effectiveness.Do not obstruct or deflect airflowthrough the radiator by installingunauthorized accessories in frontof the radiator or behind the cool-ing fan. Interference with the radi-ator airflow can lead tooverheating and consequent en-gine damage.

Radiator Hoses -Check the radiator hoses for leak-

age, cracks or deterioration, and con-nections for leakage, or loosenesseach day before riding the motorcycle, and in accordance with the PeriodicMaintenance Chart.

Coolant -Coolant absorbs excessive heat from

the engine and transfers it to the air atthe radiator. If the coolant level be-comes low, the engine overheats andmay suffer severe damage. Check thecoolant level each day before ridingthe motorcycle, also in accordancewith the periodic maintenance chartand replenish coolant if the level is low.Change the coolant in accordance withthe Periodic Maintenance Chart.

radiator) from rust and corrosion, theuse of corrosion and rust inhibitorchemicals in the coolant is essential. Ifcoolant containing corrosion and rustinhibitor chemicals are not used, overa period of time, the cooling system ac-cumulates rust and scale in the waterjacket and radiator. This will clog upthe coolant passages, and consider-ably reduce the efficiency of the cool-ing system.

WARNING

Use coolant containing corrosioninhibitors made specifically foraluminum engines and radiatorsin accordance with the instruc-tions of the manufacturer. Chemi-cals are harmful to the humanbody.

Soft or distilled water must be usedwith the antifreeze (see below for anti-freeze) in the cooling system.

CAUTION

If hard water is used in the sys-tem, it causes scale accumula-tion in the water passages, andconsiderably reduces the effi-ciency of the cooling system.

If the lowest ambient temperatureencountered falls below the freezingpoint of water, use permanent anti-freeze in the coolant to protect thecooling system against engine and ra-diator freeze-up, as well as from rustand corrosion.Use a permanent type of antifreeze

(soft water and ethylene glycol pluscorrosion and rust inhibitor chemicalsfor aluminum engines and radiators) inthe cooling system. Follow

CAUTION

Permanent types of antifreeze onthe market have anti-corrosionand anti-rust properties. When itis diluted excessively, it loses itsanti-corrosion property. Dilute apermanent type of antifreeze inaccordance with the instructionsof the manufacturer.

NOTE○A permanent type of antifreeze is in-

stalled in the cooling system whenshipped. It is colored green and con-tains ethylene glycol. It is mixed at50% and has the freezing point of –35°C (–31°F).

Kawasaki Clean Air SystemThe Kawasaki Clean Air System

(KCA) is a secondary air suction sys-tem that helps the exhaust gases toburn more completely. When the spentfuel charge is released into the exhaustsystem, it is still hot enough to burn. The KCA System allows extra air intothe exhaust system so that the spentfuel charge can continue to burn. Thiscontinued burning action tends to burnup a great deal of the normally un-burned gases, as well as changing asignificant portion of the carbon mon-oxide into carbon dioxide.

Air Suction Valves -The air suction valve is essentially a

check valve which allows fresh air toflow only from the air cleaner into theexhaust port. Any air that has passedthe air suction valve is prevented fromreturning. Inspect the air suction valves

in accordance with the Periodic Main-tenance Chart. Also, inspect the airsuction valves whenever stable idlingcannot be obtained, engine power isgreatly reduced, or there are abnormalengine noises.Air suction valve removal and in-

spection should be carried out only bya competent mechanic following the in-structions in the Service Manual.

Throttle Control SystemCheck the throttle grip play each day

before riding the motorcycle, and in ac-cordance with the Periodic Mainte-nance Chart. Adjust it if necessary.

Throttle Grip -The throttle grip controls the butterfly

valves in the throttle body. If the throttlegrip has excessive play due to eithercable stretch or maladjustment, it willcause a delay in throttle response, es-pecially at low engine speed. Also, thethrottle valve may not open fully at fullthrottle. On the other hand, if the throt-tle grip has not play, the throttle will behard to control, and the idle speed willbe erratic.

Inspection

• Check that the throttle grip play iscorrect by lightly turning the throttlegrip back and forth.

BatteryThe battery installed in this motor-

cycle is a sealed type, so it is not nec-essary to check the battery electrolytelevel or add distilled water. The sealing strip should not be

pulled off once the specified electrolytehas been installed in the battery for ini-tial service. However, in order to maximize bat-

tery life and ensure that it will providethe power needed to start the motor-cycle you must properly maintain thebattery's charge. When used regularly, the charging system in the motorcyclehelps keep the battery fully charged. Ifyour motorcycle is only used occasion-ally or for short periods of time, the bat-tery is more likely to discharge.Due to their internal composition,

batteries continually self discharge. The discharge rate depends on thetype of battery and ambient

sulfation.

206 MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENT

Page 209: Kawasaki 1400 GTR - Quick Reference Guide · 2017. 12. 5. · Kawasaki Parts and Accessories have been specially designed for use on Kawasaki motorcycles. We strongly recommend that

Sulfation occurs when the battery isleft in a discharged condition for an ex-tended time. Sulfate is a normal byproduct of the chemical reactions with-in a battery. But when continuous dis-charge allows the sulfate to crystallizein the cells, the battery plates becomepermanently damaged and will nothold a charge. Battery failure due tosulfation is not warrantable.

Battery MaintenanceIt is the owner's responsibility to keep

the battery fully charged. Failure to doso can lead to battery failure and leaveyou stranded. If you are riding your vehicle infre-

quently, inspect the battery voltageweekly using a voltmeter. If it drops be-low 12.8 volts, the battery should becharged using an appropriate charger(check with your Kawasaki dealer). Ifyou will not be using the motorcycle forlonger than two weeks, the battery

should be charged using an appropri-ate charger. Do not use an automotive-type quick charger that may over-charge the battery and damage it.

Kawasaki-recommended chargersare:OptiMate ΙΙΙYuasa 1.5 Amp Automatic chargerBattery Mate 150–9

If the above chargers are not avail-able, use equivalent one.For more details, ask your Kawasaki

dealer.

Battery Charging

• Remove the battery from the motor-cycle (see Battery Removal).

• Attach the leads from the chargerand charge the battery at a rate thatis 1/10th of the battery capacity. Forexample, the charging rate for a 10Ah battery would be 1.0 ampere.

Cleaning Your MotorcycleGeneral PrecautionsFrequent and proper care of your Ka-

wasaki motorcycle will enhance its ap-pearance, optimize overallperformance, and extend its useful life.Covering your motorcycle with a highquality, breathable motorcycle coverwill help protect its finish from harmfulUV rays, pollutants, and reduce theamount of dust reaching its surfaces.

• Be sure the engine and exhaust arecool before washing.

• Avoid applying degreaser to seals, brake pads, and tires.

• Avoid all harsh chemicals, solvents, detergents, and household cleaningproducts such as ammonia-basedwindow cleaners.

• Gasoline, brake fluid, and coolantwill damage the finish of painted andplastic surfaces: wash them off im-mediately.

• Avoid wire brushes, steel wool, andall other abrasive pads or brushes.

• Use care when washing the wind-shield, headlight cover, and otherplastic parts as they can easily bescratched.

• Avoid using pressure washers; watercan penetrate seals and electricalcomponents and damage your mo-torcycle.

• Avoid spraying water in delicateareas such as in air intakes, fuel sys-tem, brake components, electricalcomponents, electrical socket, muf-fler outlets, and fuel tank openings.

Washing Your Motorcycle

• After washing, rinse your motorcyclethoroughly with clean water to re-move any residue (residue from thedetergent can damage parts of yourmotorcycle).

• Use a soft cloth to dry your motor-cycle. As you dry, inspect your mo-torcycle for chips and scratches. Donot let the water air dry as this candamage the painted surfaces.

• Start the engine and let it idle for sev-eral minutes. The heat from the en-gine will help dry moist areas.

• Carefully ride your motorcycle at aslow speed and apply the brakesseveral times. This helps dry thebrakes and restores them to normaloperating performance.

NOTE○After riding in an area where the

roads are salted or near the ocean, immediately wash your motorcyclewith cold water. Do not use warmwater as it accelerates the chemicalreaction of the salt. After drying, ap-ply a corrosion protection spray onall metal and chrome surfaces to pre-vent corrosion.

○Condensation may form on the in-side of the headlight lens after ridingin the rain, washing the motorcycleor humid weather. To remove themoisture, start the engine and turnon the headlight. Gradually the con-densation on the inside of the lenswill clear off.
