March, 2014 Dear Parents and Students, We seem to have reached the half-way point of Term One very quickly. Despite the indifferent weather and having to postpone events on more than one occasion (happily the postponement days turned out to be an improvement), students have settled well to the new school year and have entered into a variety of activities with enjoyment. The Years 7 and 9 barbecue tea and games evenings have been a great success, and credit is due to our Year 13 students for organising and running both these events. Athletics Day was also a great success with everyone entering into the spirit and lots of talent evident. Coming up quickly now is the School Fair on Saturday, 5th April and before that the Years 11 to 13 “Meet the Teacher” function on the 27th March. Outstanding Scholar Award It was wonderful news to hear that Katie Mulholland, our 2013 Dux, was one of 60 recipients nationally of an Outstanding Scholar Award. Katie received three Outstanding grades (Chemistry, English and Statistics) and two Scholarship grades (Biology and Physics). Recipients of Outstanding Scholar Awards receive $5,000.00 for three years of their University study. Katie is studying Health Sciences at Otago this year. 2013 Scholarship Results Columba students again received the highest number of Scholarship grades in Otago (20 in total).

2013 NCEA Results While these are still provisional, it is probably best not to include a lot of detail about percentages of Merit and Excellence Endorsements except to say that we were particularly pleased with the NCEA Level 3 results which were significantly up on the 2012 Level 3 results. Provisionally, our Level 3 results are: 38.5% Achieved with Excellence (nationally 12.5%) 44.9% Achieved with Merit (nationally 31.8%) 16.7% Achieved (nationally 55.7%) Once the 2013 results are finalised, we will include the names of all the girls who gained Overall Excellence Endorsements as well as the Columba percentages and national percentages for each of the three Levels.

The Lissie Rathbone Scholarship (University of Otago) Congratulations to Kate Tilson who was in Year 13 last year and who was awarded The Lissie Rathbone Scholarship. The Lissie Rathbone Scholarship is awarded to the student who gains the top results in NCEA Level 3 English and History in Otago/Southland and who is going on to study at Otago University.

2013 IGCSE Results We are very pleased with the girls’ results from the first year of our two-year pilot trial of IGCSE Mathematics and Science. The Year 10 Set 1 Mathematics and Science classes were both involved in this trial. IGCSE Global Perspectives continued to be taught to three of the four Year 10 Social Studies classes. Three of the girls who sat in all three subjects gained three A grades (a commendable achievement): Maxine Bainbridge Selena Ballantyne Chloe Lai Jenny Mi Annabelle Ritchie Anastasia Varlamova Ophelia Yeung

We have appointed Mrs Kate Lindsay who is teaching three English classes and Ms Lauren Sandri to tutor ESOL part-time this year. Ms Sandri, DipPhEd, DipTchg (Secondary), is also providing Learning Support for Years 9 and 10 students and assisting in the Careers Department.

New Members of Staff Mrs Kathryn Riepl, MA (Oxon), BA (Hons) in Modern History (Oxon), GradDipTchg (Secondary) (Auckland University of Technology), HOD History. Mrs Rebekah Selfe, BA, DipTchg, English (relieving for Mrs T. Roxborogh who is on study leave this year). Mrs Kate Lindsay, BA(Hons), DipTchg (Secondary), TEFOL, LTCL (Speech and Drama), English and ESOL. Ms Sofie Jacobs, Master in Visual Arts(Hons) (Sint-Lukas College, Brussels, Belgium), DipTchg (Secondary) (Belgium), French and Year 12 Design. Ms Anna Ward, DipFA, DipTchg (Secondary), Art. Mrs Ella Murdoch, BA, PGDip for Graduates, DipSecTchg, Year 9 Chinese class. Miss Jane Spencer, BEd, Years 2/3 class.

Visual Arts Department 2014 While Mr A. Cartwright, HOD is on study leave this year, we have two Acting HODs in charge of the Department. They are Ms Teresa Andrew and Ms Kezia Field who are both experienced teachers and very familiar with the Department. Ms Sofie Jacobs who has an excellent background in Design in her home country of Belgium and who joined the staff to teach junior French part-time is teaching the NCEA Level 2 Design class. Ms Anna Ward is teaching junior Art part-time and also one period of Level 2 Design because of a clash with Year 8 French taught by Ms Jacobs.

Artist in Residence Programme Ms Lizzie Hewitt has been appointed our 2014 Artist in Residence. This year we wanted to have a dancer/choreographer as last year Diane Brown, writer, was our Artist in Residence. Ms Hewitt trained at The Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London, graduating with a BA(Honours) in Dance Theatre in 2011, after completing her Royal Academy of Dance Ballet Grades. Her training at Laban was extensive, with skills taught in Release, Cunningham and Graham contemporary techniques, as well as Ballet, Physical Theatre and Choreography. Since graduating, Ms Hewitt’s professional experience has involved being a performer, teacher and choreographer, and it has taken her around the world. We are very grateful indeed to our Parents’ Association for making the Artist in Residence programme possible.

2014 Mandarin Language Assistant (MLA) We are very fortunate to have a full-time MLA again this year thanks to the generosity of Hanban and the Confucius Institute at the University of Canterbury. Ms Cancan Yan is a graduate of the Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

Otago Secondary Schools’ Athletics Championships Columba Athletes Excel

The Secondary Schools’ Athletics season began for 2014 with the Otago Athletics Championships on Friday evening, 7th March and all day Saturday, 8th March. We had an extremely strong team representing the College. The girls looked fantastic in the new singlets, designed by Tamsin Cooper. Outstanding performances came from Lydia Shirley who gained three titles in the Under 16 throwing events (shot put, discus and hammer) and from Charlotte Cahill with two titles in the senior 1500m and 3000m. Lily Cunningham won the Under 16 400m in a smart time that was a personal best. In the Under 14 grade Ellie Duncan won both the 100m and 200m and ran strongly in the anchor leg of the relay to push the winning margin of the Under 14 team to 15 metres. In the same grade Isabelle Becconsall-Ryan was a convincing winner in both the 1500m and 3000m. Chenoa Metua ran strongly to claim the Under 14 400m title. Ella Harris and Caitlin Deans both won their 3000m races in the Under 16 and 15 grades.

In the 4x100 m relays, Columba won the Under 14 grade and was 2nd in both Under 15 and senior grades.

There was a large number of parents and family members supporting the athletes. The tent had a very inspiring, friendly atmosphere. Captains, Charlotte Cahill and Laura Saville, were great leaders of our large team. Many athletes did personal bests and ALL athletes qualified for the Otago/Southland Championships the following week. Thank you to Mrs Saville for all her work in helping cater for the team at the tent.

Congratulations to all athletes and I look forward to Inspiring Excelling Together in Invercargill at the Otago/Southland Championships.

Rowing The South Island Club Rowing Championships were held in Twizel. There were some very pleasing results with all girls making the finals. The Under 16 girls won the Gold Medal in the Under 18 8+! Girls in the crew were: Sara Griffin, Olivia Anderson, Ryelee Breen, Heidi Wright, Simone Reid, Kate Campbell, Shannon Harrison, Alice Young with Toni Mulholland as the cox. South Island Secondary Schools’ Rowing Championships The Columba College Rowing Squad competed recently at the South Island Secondary Schools’ Rowing Championships in Twizel. The Squad has been training intensely since the middle of last year and this regatta was the final big regatta for some of the girls. With glassy, flat water and a beautiful blue sky the stage was set for a good weekend of rowing. The Novice Eight was the first to feature in the A Finals – Saturday at 5.00 p.m. The crew had raced earlier in the day and they went into the final as the “favourite”. After a steady start, Columba pushed out to a lead over St. Margaret’s College and Rangi Ruru. By the half way mark the crew had established a good lead over these two crews and a significant lead over the rest of the crews in the race. Columba extended the lead to win by over three lengths. A mixture of relief and sheer joy for the girls as they crossed the finish line. This was the first time a Columba Rowing Eight had won at the SISS Championships in over 10 years!!! Proud parents, coaches, girls and teachers greeted the girls as they carried their boat up from the water and were presented with their medals. This race was followed up by the Columba Under 16 Eight racing on Sunday morning. The girls got away to a steady start, with St Margaret’s and Rangi Ruru in front of them. The Columba Eight placed 3

rd at half way; by the time the

crew passed the vocal Columba supporters, with 250m to go, the Columba Eight picked up the pace even more and the distance between 1

st and 3

rd was just half a boat length. Columba went on to claim the Bronze Medal in this event

– a fantastic effort! The third ‘crew’ to medal was Emma Winders in the Under 18 single scull. Emma led from the beginning in this race and went on to win Gold in the race by a clear two lengths. Aside from the medal winners, all girls made it to finals and performed in the Top 10 for at least one of their races – which is a wonderful achievement. These results are the best results that Columba College Rowing has had for a number of years and with the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Rowing Championships coming up at the end of the month, the girls should feel quietly confident that they will be competitive in each of their races. A big “thank you” to all of the parents who attended the regatta, and who helped with our big contingent – feeding, accommodating, putting up and taking down the tent, massaging, etc., – all very valuable contributions. I wish to extend my best wishes to the girls and the coaching team for a successful and enjoyable regatta at the end of the month. Mrs C. Sinclair Teacher in charge of Rowing

Tennis Rileigh Fields, Year 11 competed in the Tennis NZ 14s nationals in Auckland in early January. Rileigh and her doubles partner, Meg Timu, made it to the Top 8 in the main draw doubles, eventually losing a very tight quarter final to the 4

th seeds from Canterbury, the first set went to a tie-break. To be

one of the Top 8 doubles teams in the country is a great achievement out of 32 doubles entries. Rileigh also made it to the consolation quarter finals in singles at the 14s nationals. On Saturday, 25th January Rileigh also won the Otago Junior Open 16s girls singles and the 16s girls doubles with her doubles partner, Eliza Booth.

The Columba Number 1 Tennis Team, in playing order, Rileigh Fields, Amy Logie, Erin Chittock and Lucy Stephens, were runners-up at the Otago Secondary Schools’ Tennis Tournament held on Wednesday, 19th February.

The team progressed to the final, beating Otago Girls’ 5-1 in pool play. Well done to all girls.

On 8th and 9th February, Rileigh Fields competed in the Southland Junior Tennis open in Invercargill. Rileigh was placed 3

rd in singles and won the doubles with her partner, Zoe Smith, from

Southland.

On 15th and 16th February Rileigh was the number one player for the 16s Girls’ Tennis Otago team that competed in the Quadrangular Tournament held in Dunedin. The team won all its ties against South Canterbury, Southland, Southern Lakes and North Otago. Rileigh won three out of four singles matches and three out of four doubles matches. Combined with the 16s boys’ results, the Otago 16s team won the cup for their age group.

Overall, all the Otago teams (10s, 12s, 14s, 16s) came first. Other Columba pupils involved in this tournament, representing Otago were Bridget Scott, Laura Hamilton, Sennah Lee, Grace Togneri, Lucy Stephens, Erin Chittock and Annabelle Alloo. Kate Guildford also played but represented Southern Lakes. Mrs Julia Scott (Bridget’s mother) was the girls’ coach, and her assistance was very much appreciated.

Touch The Otago Secondary Schools’ Touch Championships were held in fine but cool conditions at the Oval on Saturday, 22nd February. The Senior A team was looking to follow up from its creditable 7

th place finish at Nationals in Auckland last December.

A Top Two finish would see an automatic qualification to the South Island Tournament at the end of March. It was a three-team race this year, with Otago Girls’ High School putting up an impressive 1-0 win against St Hilda’s. This put the pressure on St Hilda’s to beat us, but they could only snatch a draw in the dying seconds. Columba then put up a solid performance against OGHS, 3-1, securing our spot at South Islands. We again beat OGHS in the final to become the Otago Secondary School Champions and the top seed from the Otago region for the first time. The team has retained all available players from last season, led by Captain Phoebe Steele and our nine Otago Representatives, ably supported by the rest of the team. We also welcomed our new players - Claudia Carruthers, McKayler Moore and Anna McCaughan to the team. The girls are excited about the upcoming South Island Tournament with the goal being a Top Four finish, qualifying the team for Nationals. Thank you to Mr PJ Turnbull for coaching the team throughout the tournament, and to the parents and supporters on the day. Mrs A. Wafer Teacher in charge of Touch

Columba/St. Andrew’s Summer Tournament

Columba hosted St. Andrew’s College from Christchurch recently in the annual summer sporting exchange. Sports played in the exchange were Senior A Touch, Senior A Volleyball and Tennis which consisted of our top eight tennis players. The girls enjoyed the opportunity to play teams outside our region and the friendly spirit of competition. Thank you to all the Columba families who hosted a St. Andrew’s College student - the tournament would not be possible without your generosity. Our thanks also to the Columba staff-members (Mrs Wafer, Touch; Mrs Klobukowska, Tennis; Ms Kunath; Volleyball) who managed, accompanied and supported their respective teams. Touch Game 1, Columba won 11-0 Game 2, Columba won 10-0 Game 3 mixed with John McGlashan/Columba v. St. Andrew’s College, a 2-2 draw and a 3-1 win.

Tennis St. Andrew’s College won overall 11-1 and in the mixed games with John McGlashan/Columba, St Andrew`s won 8-0.

Volleyball St. Andrew’s College won game 1, 3-0, game 2, 3-0 and game 3, 3-0.
