Twitter Insights Presented by Kathryn Alexander, MA on Facebook Live

I’m Kathryn Alexander, owner of Quick Video Productions and I help people start and manage the technical/marketing side of their business. My clients are all folks who resist technology for one reason or another.

I’m a serial entrepreneur, on my ninth or tenth business. I’ve done non-profits, manufacturing, consulting and retail. I love business! I’m also a teacher – I can’t help it, so I’ve even taught entrepreneurs. I’ve been one the web my whole life, it seems. I enjoy it, but it’s not my life. Technology is like a car. It gets me where I’m going, but I don’t get under the hood, I don’t change the oil and I don’t want a car that needs constant maintenance either. That’s how website should be!

I’ve found that there are several main reasons they tell me they are resistant to the web aspects of their business: They hate it, they don’t understand it, they don’t have the time, or they don’t want to waste their time learning it. When you are starting out it’s hard if you resist wearing all the hats, unless you have the money to pay someone to do what you don’t want to do and that you aren’t good at doing.

Today I’m going to discuss – You and Your Business.

What Twitter Allows

HOW DOES TWITTER WORK?

Social media is one of the major ways people find you and your business on the web. Twitter is something everyone has heard of but few use well. Here are some of the things you need to know to make Twitter successful for you.

WHAT TWITTER ALLOWS Module ONE One of the aspects of Twitter that can be disconcerting is the rule that you can only use 140 characters. A character is a letter or a space – spaces count. This CAN seem like a limitation, but if you rise to the occasion and use it as a discipline

then you can actually make that 140 character limit work FOR you. PRACTICE Define your product or service in 140 characters:

Using Twitter well forces you to be succinct and even creative to get your point across. Not too long ago Twitter was considering removing that 140 character limit and people actually said ‘NO’. So they didn’t, but what they did do, which was great was to remove the link information from the count. HASH TAGS Twitter offers you the ability to actually listen and even talk with your clients by using

hash tags. I will go into these more later, but what I want you to understand is there is a lot of information you can get from Twitter that you can’t get from any of the other social media applications. You just have to know how to do it. List some areas you might be interested in exploring on Twitter:

CREATE /FIND/ SHARE

You use Twitter by contributing content. You can create your own, find content that others have created, or simply share (retweet) what others share with you. All are valid and if you automate (more on this later) then it doesn’t have to take a lot of time. The foundation for having good content has everything to do with finding relevant people to follow. You want to follow people who add value to your clients/customers. List some people you might like to know more about (include your clients or prospective

clients):

____________________________________________________________________________________ There is a Twitter ‘etiquette’ that says that you follow back those who follow you. That’s only partially a good idea. Follow those who help you achieve your goal with Twitter – educating, entertaining and inspiring your clients and customers. If there is little or no

value in someone’s tweets for you, then just ignore them. Twitter is not just a numbers game. If you have hundreds of followers and it’s all noise, then you are doing your followers a big disservice and you won’t find Twitter useful. You create content by blogging and writing articles and even books. Anything you write can be Tweeted and in fact this is one of the best ways to generate interest in your writing. If you connect your blog to your Twitter account then your posting will be automatic,

saving time and making it easy to keep your twitter feed fresh. List articles that you have written or value that you can tweet content from:

____________________________________________________________________________________

If you find interesting and prolific people to follow, then you can share with your followers what they are sharing. You can do this by visiting their blogs and tweeting them (they will love you for it!) AND by retweeting the tweets they post to your page. Their posting happens automatically when you follow them. Twitter is a very fast medium. Combine that with the fact that people view their Twitter feeds at different times of day and it is easy to see that if you only tweeted once a day, few

would see you. You get around this by tweeting several times a day to increase your chances of being found. This should be automated, so you don’t have to spend the time. Once the automation is set up you only have to pay attention once a week, or once a month, except for retweets. I can be reached at 509-934-5930. Give me a call and we can explore where you are now and where you want to be and start to close that gap! You can email me at [email protected] and visit the website at QuickVideoProductions.com.

Make your web presence effective, fun and easy! Next Hash tags

Hash Tags

WHAT ARE HASH TAGS AND HOW DO YOU USE THEM?

Hash tags look like the pound sign. They are put in front of words and you can search for

them on Twitter to see what others are saying about that subject. When people talk about ‘Twitter trends’ they are referring to the number of people using a particular hash tag. Twitter will shares a list that is constantly updated so you can see what most people are talking about. If the Kardashians are of particular interest then you might not care, BUT if they are talking about you – then you might.

CREATING A HASH TAG It is simply the pound sign in front of:

• Product

• Service • Topic of interest • Name • Place

with no spaces. When you use it in a tweet it will turn blue. Don’t use more than 2-3 in the same tweet as it becomes hard to read and confusing.

You can create your own hash tag or use one that is already in use. If you research them before you use them then it will be come clear if there is value in using it. List hash tags that you would find useful – make them up for this exercise:

____________________________________________________________________________________

USING HASH TAGS Click on the blue hash tag in a tweet or put the pound sign and the word(s) – no spaces, into the search bar of Twitter. This is the place to use those hash tag ideas you created earlier. The page dedicated to that hash tag offers a wealth of information:

• Others who share the same interest • Information you can share with your followers • Resources • New people to follow • Ways to connect with others who share your interest – plan a discussion

Make a list here of people, topics, resources you want to know more about:

Here list topics you would like to use to generate discussion:

____________________________________________________________________________________ Under “More” you will find:

• Sort by “people you follow” • Sort by “people near you”

Make a hash tag using your location (city, state) and see if you can find people to connect with. List those people below:

Use hash tags to follow:

• Events (sports, conferences, forums, concerts, etc.) • People (celebrities, political figures, friends)

Trends show you what hash tags are the most popular at the moment (events, weather, people etc.)

If there are areas of interest in the ‘trends’ section – list them here:

____________________________________________________________________________________ Hash tags allow you to find areas of interest and people on other sites as well –Pineterest, Instagram, etc.

List hash tags that you would find useful to search for on these other social media sites:

____________________________________________________________________________________ You can find hash tags that might be of interest by researching:

• Cool hash tags • Interesting hash tags

Listening to Your Twitter Feed

TWITTER ANALYTICS

The neat thing about relationships is that they go both ways. In any healthy relationship each side talks and each side listens. Twitter is a fast and immediate communication medium, so it takes a bit of work to learn to ‘listen’ to your Twitter feed. Analytics and hash tags are the first ways you begin to learn more about your followers and the impact you are having, to go deeper you will also need a few tools.

When searching for people to follow on Twitter, pay attention to the “Tweets, Following, Followers” area at the top of the page.

• Tweets – how active are they? • Following – how many people are they interested in following? This number should

be smaller than their followers or they maybe spammers. • Followers – how many other folks find their content interesting? About 2000 or

more shows a good reach.

Research (# persons name) and list those below who are active and have sufficient followers that you want to follow:

____________________________________________________________________________________

Follow those with good numbers. That said, these numbers are not everything. Followers come and go. You can and should remove followers that are inactive or no longer relevant. Always go for quality over quantity.

Twitterholic.com and Twittercounter.com are places you can go to see your own feeds performance and compare it to that of others. Look at high performing sites to get ideas to make your site better. Regional rank can help you see your reach in your local market.

If you have a Twitter account already go to these sites and list below the insights you get as they analyze your account:

____________________________________________________________________________________

Google Analytics is another resource, though a bit more complicated, that can help you see how effective your Twitter feed is at driving traffic to your website. If you have a Google Analytics account (https://www.google.com/analytics/) go there and write down the insights you get from their anaysis:

____________________________________________________________________________________

If you don’t have a Google Analytics account – start one today, it’s free. A good measure of the relevance and importance your tweets have for others is how often they are reteeted. Retweetrank.com is a place to get even more detailed analysis of the effectiveness of your Twitter feed. This site measures how often your tweets are retweeted. Twitter etiquette suggests that when someone retweets something you post, that you thank them for it, and follow them.

If you have a Retweetrank account (http://www.retweetrank.com/)go there and write down the insights you get from their analysis:

____________________________________________________________________________________ Creating links in your tweets is another way to track engagement. Bit.ly is wonderful for this. Since every character counts, you want to shorten URLs. Bit.ly does just that. You enter the URL and bit.ly makes it shorter and it will track how often a link is clicked. This

will tell you what links your followers find interesting. Bit.ly IS the URL. The next module is all about cool tools that make Twitter even more useful.

Cool Tools for Twitter

TOOLS TO AUTOMATE AND MANAGE TWITTER

Some of the things that make Twitter more useful are the ability to:

• Schedule tweets • See what specific people are saying so you can respond • Understand how others see your Twitter feed. • Automate by integrating with other social media sites (Facebook, Linkedin,

Google+, Mailchimp etc.)

HOOTSUITE There are a whole host of tools to make better use of Twitter. My favorite is Hootsuite.com. HootSuite is a social media management system to manage how others see your business. The user interface is a dashboard, and it supports social network integrations for Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, Foursquare, MySpace, WordPress, TrendSpottr and Mixi. Additional integrations are available via HootSuite’s App Directory, including Instagram, MailChimp, Reddit, Storify, Tumblr, Vimeo and YouTube. You can: • Manage multiple social networks • Schedule messages and tweets

Page 12: Kathryn Alexander, MA Twitter Insights · 2020. 3. 16. · QVP – Kathryn Alexander, MA 4 4 CREATE /FIND/ SHARE You use Twitter by contributing content. You can create your own,

• Track brand mentions • Analyze social media traffic With Hootsuite you can collect all of the tweets of specific followers so you can respond to

them in real time. This allows for very pointed discussions with potential clients and customers if you follow them. Look over this list of other social media sites and list below those that would be useful to you and why. Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, Foursquare, MySpace, WordPress, TrendSpottr, Mixi. Instagram, MailChimp, Reddit, Storify, Tumblr, Vimeo and YouTube.

Set up your Hootsuite account. What people do you follow that you should track with Hootsuite?

GetStacker.com is another tool. Stacker makes it easy to Publish and Reply across multiple Social Media accounts at once. With Stacker you can... * Schedule content to be published at the best times throughout the day * Reply to users who write on your wall, @reply or @mention you * Invite collaborators to help you manage your social accounts * Analyze detailed statistics on your fanbase & the content you publish https://tweetdeck.twitter.com is an application created by Twitter to collect tweets from

the people you follow, automate and schedule your posts.

Using these tools creates the opportunity to create a real relationship with people as you respond to their posts, thank them for responding to yours, ask them questions and share

resources in real time. Klout.com is a bit different. Klout is the standard for influence. Look up your Klout Report to find your influence level, user style, and content. Klout believes that every individual who creates content has influence. Their goal is to accurately measure that influence and provide context around who a person influences and the specific topics they are most influential on. You can learn a lot about how you impact others and are impacted by

others using Klout. Set up your Klout account. What insights did you gain from their analysis of your presence on the web?
