Festival sodobne umetnosti Art Stays spada
med najpomembnejše predstavitve
sodobne, predvsem likovne umetnosti v
Sloveniji in v tem delu Evrope. Vse od leta
2003 prinaša produkcijo domačih in tujih
u m e t n i k o v , o d n a j b o l j z n a n i h d o
najperspektivnejših. Do danes je festival
gostil preko 700 umetnikov, med njimi
velika imena sodobne umetnosti, kot so
Yoko Ono, Gilbert & George, Allora &
Calzadilla, Ivan Navarro, Ann & Patrick
Poirier in Hannah Collins.
Največji slovenski festival sodobne
vizualne umetnosti Art Stays v šestnajsti
ediciji poteka pod naslovom FRAGILE. Z
letošnjim izborom partnerjev, kustosov in
umetnikov postavlja projekt na še višji nivo.
Preko del svetovnih zvezd kot so Ai
Weiwei, Monira Al Qadiri, Thomas Schütte,
Koen Vanmechelen, Gavin Turk, Jake &
Dinos Chapman in mnogih drugih, se
posveča lomljivosti likovnih materialov in
tako posredno nagovarja krhkost odnosov
ter čustev v sodobni družbi.
Steklo, keramika, papir, rastlinje in druge
oblike narave so bile stalnica vsako-
dnevnih otvoritev razstav, ki vam ponujajo
poletni umik v širok spekter kiparstva,
fotografije, slikarstva, instalacij, videa,
performansov in glasbe. Festival so
pospremili mojstri kulinarike in vinarji,
filmski program ter poletna akademija Art
Stays z delavnicami in pogovori o aktualnih
temah.

Art Stays is one of the most important
festivals of contemporary fine art in
Slovenia and in this part of Europe. It has
been showcasing works of renowned and
up-and-coming national and international
artists since 2003. So far, the festival has
hosted over 700 artists, including such
famous names as Yoko Ono, Gilbert &
George, Allora & Calzadilla, Ivan Navarro,
Ann & Patrick Poirier, and Hannah Collins.
The sixteenth edition of the largest
Slovenian contemporary visual art festival
Art Stays is entitled FRAGILE and with the
selection of partners, curators and artists is
taking the festival to a highest level.
Through the works of Contemporary Art
stars such as Ai Weiwei, Monira Al Qadiri,
Thomas Schütte, Koen Vanmechelen.
Gavin Turk, Jake & Dinos Chapman and
many others it focuses on fragility of art
materials, and indirectly addresses the
fragility of relationships and emotions in
modern society.
Glass, ceramics, paper, plants and other
forms of natural life were the common
thread at every exhibition opening. They
offer a retreat to the vast worlds of
sculpturing, photography and painting, as
well as art installations, performances, and
music. The festival was complemented by
creations of Ptuj’s best chefs and wine-
makers, and accompanied by a film
program, as well as Art Stays summer
academy with workshops and talks about
topical issues.

Prihodnost zgleda žalostno, če se izrazimo nekoliko neustrezno. Skupna prihodnost našega
planeta je negotova, trpi za posledicami ravnanja dobe, ki jo naznanja Antropocen - doba
človeka. Temelji našega nekdanjega optimizma se sesedajo pod težo nepojmljivih sprememb,
ki si jih nismo mogli zamisliti. Ravnovesje med kaosom in redom je dlje stran, kot kdajkoli
prej. Razlog za to je vdaja dvomu in veri v vstajenje starih bogov. Informacije predstavljajo
znanje in znanje je moč. Ta aksiom se je nedavno utopil v močvirju sprenevedanja in
manipulacije. Vzpon avtoritarizma nas opominja na pretekle katastrofe in obljube grozečega
prevrata. Prihodnost je puščava. To je podoba s katero nas vsakodnevno hranijo. Če lahko
utripajoča krila metulja sprožijo nevihto na drugi strani planeta, se danes zavedamo, da lahko
utrip ideje v svetu sproži pojav, ki osvoji um univerzuma kot cunami. Obvladovanje
neškodljivih tovrstnih pojavov, zmanjševanje negativizma in pazljiva skrb za Vrt upanja, so
lahko načini, kako krotiti pesimizem in mu ne dovoliti, da postane del sanj in fantazij.
Tema te razstave, ki temelji na eklektični zbirki Fundazione Berengo, se osredinja na
lomljivost, na krhkost načina, na katerega ustvarjamo svojo prihodnost. Kreacije so produkt
uravnoteženih neravnovesij. Kreativnost je zapleten proces, ko gre za velike razsežnosti, ki
zahtevajo delikatnost, inspiracijo, veščine in vero v moč domišljije. Na tej posebni razstavi
vsaka soba predstavlja lomljivost posameznih elementov, sestavljanke, če želite, ki sestavljajo
naš svet na poti skozi transformacijo.
Ena izmed sob nam podaja sliko lomljivosti vere. Simbolna sklonjena glava, planet in
upognjen hrbet pred superiornim bitjem. Gesta nepomembnosti, podredljivosti in razdor.
Soba z naslovom »Krhkost kulture« razmišlja o ekscesu dekadence, medtem ko druge
prikažejo prekarnost družbe, tapiserijo, ki jo je lažje uničiti, kot splesti. Govori o odkritjih in
naravi, naši stari zibelki, ki jo vsi ljubimo in sovražimo, potrebujemo in ji nasprotujemo.
Razstava sama po sebi je bogata tapiserija različnih idej in izrazov, perspektiv in pristopov.
Gre za spajanje različnih sestavin iz vsega sveta. Košara s semeni je imela namen pognojiti um.
Vsako od teh semen dobi čas in prostor, da se vcepi in injicira, da spodbudi in raste, da se
skrije in se znova razkrije, da oplodi in se izvali. Zato tudi njihovo srečanje na krhkem otoku,
kot grozd pojavov. Kaj so pravi pogoji v katerih lahko ustvarimo skupno prihodnost? Meduza
v glavni sobi prikazuje krhkost narave, predstavlja stvari, ki jih ni moč napovedati in kaže na
rešitev enormne naloge, ki nas čaka, skoraj Sizifovo delo izdelovanja trajnostne prihodnosti za
vse, kar je Gaja. Meduza predstavlja dvojnost, ki sta red in kaos. Daje življenje, ko ga hkrati
spreminja v kamen. Njena zaščita je smrt drugega. Ko zmaje z glavo pomeni, da je plodnost
zagotovljena, prav tako pa tudi popolna predaja. V tej dihotomiji Meduza predstavlja
ravnovesje in kaže na dolgotrajen uspeh evolucije. Na glavi ne nosi le kač, pač pa tudi kokoši,
ptiča z dvoumno pomembnostjo. V sodobni medicini so kokošja jajca pogosto osnova za

mnoga cepiva in zdravila. Kokoši so simbol ženske moči. Tako kot kače, pa tudi kokoši lahko
ubijajo, saj so inkubatorji usodnih katastrof. Nevarnost vedno preži na nas v stvareh, ki jih
poznamo. To kar je znotraj je zunaj in mi smo tisto drugo. Rešitev za naše težavne čase je moč
najti le v nas samih. Obstaja način, kako pogledati Meduzi v oči in preživeti. Tvoje preživetje je
preživetje drugih.
The future looks bleak, to use an understatement. Our collective future on a planet suffering
from the unforgiving consequences of the Anthropocene, the Age of Man, seems problematic.
The foundations of our former optimism are crumbling under the weight of previously
unimaginable transformations. The balance between chaos and order looks further away than
ever before. Reason is succumbing to doubt and the belief in the resurrection of old gods.
Information is knowledge and knowledge is power. This axiom recently drowned in a morass
of fakery and manipulation. The rise of authoritarianism reminds us of past disasters and
promises of impending upheaval. The future is a wasteland. At least, this is the impression we
are fed daily. If the flight of a butterfly can cause a storm at the other side of the planet, we
now realize that a flicker of an idea can grow into a meme that conquers the universal mind
like a tsunami. Controlling harmful memes, downplaying negativism and carefully tending
the Garden of Hope can be ways to curb pessimism, while never giving in to pipedreams and
virtual fantasies.
The theme of this exhibition, based on the eclectic collection of the Fondazione Berengo, deals
with the fragility, the brittleness of the way in which we are constructing our future. Creations
are the product of balanced imbalances. Creativity is a hyper-complex process on such a vast
scale that requires delicacy, inspiration, mastery and a belief in the power of imagination. In
this gem of an exhibition different rooms represent the brittleness of various key elements,
puzzles if you like, that form our current world in full transformation mode.
One room reflects about the brittleness of religion. The symbolical bowing head, the planet
and the arching of the back to a superior Being. A gesture of insignificance, surrender and
'geworfen sein' that finds its remarkable pendant in expressions of dominance, submission,
and strife. The 'brittleness of culture' room ponders on the cultural excess of decadence while
other rooms instill thoughts about the precarity of society, a tapestry more easily destroyed
than woven, about discovery and nature, our old cradle we love and hate, need and oppose.
The exhibition itself is a rich tapestry of ideas and expressions, perspectives and approaches. It
is an eclectic collection of different ingredients from all over the world. A basket of seeds, so to
speak, meant to fertilize minds. Each and one of these seeds get the space and the time to
instill and inject, to spur and grow, to bury and reveal itself, to fertilise and hatch. Hence their
gathering on a fragile island, as a cluster of memes. What are the right conditions to construct
the texture for our collective future? The Medusa, in the main room, showing the 'brittleness of
nature', represents the unpredictability of things but also points to a solution for the enormous
task that awaits us, the almost Sisyphean work of carving out a sustainable future for all and
everything which is Gaia. Medusa stands for the duality of order and chaos. She inspires life
while turning it into stone. Her protection is someone else's demise. Her snakehead means
secure fertility as well as ultimate surrender. In this Medusa, however, this dichotomy finds a
balance and points to long-term evolutionary success. She does not wear only snakes but also
chickens, a bird which importance is ambiguous too. In modern medicine, chicken eggs are the
base of many medications and vaccinations. Hens are a symbol of feminine power. Like

snakes, however, chickens can kill too, being incubators of new lethal diseases for mankind.
Danger always lurks in what is known to us. Inside is outside, and we are the other. A
solution for our troubled times can be found in ourselves. There is a way to look into the
Medusa's eyes and get away with it. Survival of yourself is survival of the other.

Krhkost, tema šestnajste izdaje festivala Art Stays, lahko prevzema različne oblike, od formalnih
do notranjih, vse do delovanja časa, ki z minevanjem načenja naš spomin. V Miheličevi galeriji na
Ptuju bodo dialog odprle osebne intervencije treh avtorjev, ki s pomočjo fotografskega medija,
vsak z drugačno formalno in konceptualno perspektivo, podajajo razmišljanja o specifični temi.
Silvia Camporesi (Forli, 1973) je več let hodila po polotoku in skozi fotografsko pripoved
zapuščenih vasi in zgradb, kjer najdemo znake in predmete, sledove preteklih časov, ustvarila
idealno preslikavo Italije, ki izginja. Kot rezultat je nastal ciklus Atlas Italiae, o katerem je avtorica
leta 2016 v intervjuju s Francesco Mattozzi za Artribune povedala, da »obravnava mesta, ujeta na
vrhuncu njihove krhkosti, kraje, ki morda že čez leto dni ne bodo več obstajali, saj bodo zrušeni ali
prestrukturirani. Med propadajočimi strukturami pa sem vseeno iskala varuhe spominov, nekaj,
kar bi mi lahko pripovedovalo o zgodbi teh zidov in o spominu tistih, ki so nekdaj tam živeli«.
Če se poglobimo v raziskovanje, ki se ga je v zadnjem desetletju lotila Silvia Camporesi, lahko
hitro opazimo, da je nanjo vplivala množica predlogov in da se vedno giblje na mejnem področju
med resničnostjo in fikcijo, med prekrivno in režirano fotografijo. Tudi v delu, ki je razstavljeno
na Ptuju, se avtorica, čeprav gre za geografski pregled s točno določeno temo, poigrava s tovrstno
dvoumnostjo in »spreminja« kraje tako, da fotografije ročno prebarva. Gre za poseg, ki ni omejen
zgolj na formalni vidik, temveč v prenesenem pomenu predstavlja željo po ponovni oživitvi teh
območij in hkrati sporoča, da njihova usoda še ni zapečatena. Poleg tega z barvanjem (slednje se
nanaša na starodavno tehniko iz samega začetka fotografije, ki se je je med drugim posluževal
Felice Beato, najpomembnejši predstavnik jokohamske šole) ustvarja kratek stik, saj upošteva
drugačno časovno dinamiko izdelave, ki se razlikuje od ekstremne hitrosti, značilne za današnjo
digitalno fotografijo.
Paolo Ciregia (Viareggio, 1987) s serijo Perestrojka ponuja razmislek o našemu dojemanju, ki je
nenehno podvrženo bombardiranju s podobami vojne in smrti, zaradi česar postajamo
neobčutljivi na bolečino in prikrajšani za pravo kritično zavest. V odgovor je avtor uporabil
reportažne slike, posnete v obdobju štirih let vojne med ukrajinsko vojsko in ruskimi separatisti
(na trgu Majdan, ob odcepitvi Krima, med spopadi v Donbasu), ki poteka že od leta 2014, jih
obdelal s prekrivanjem, obrezovanjem in jedkanjem ter tako ustvaril drugačen ikonografski
repertoar, s katerim lahko poustvarja pripoved o konfliktu. Instalacija, ustvarjena na ta način, teži
k destabilizaciji vizije in preprečuje, da bi dosegli to, kar je Roland Barthes (v intervenciji
Šokantne fotografije iz dela Mitologije, 1957) opredelil kot »popolno berljivost prizora, njegovo
prileganje, ki nas odvrača od poglobljenega sprejemanja slike v njeni škandaloznosti; fotografija,
zreducirana na stanje čiste govorice, nas ne more dezorganizirati«. Med razstavljenimi

fotografskimi deli je tudi Glasnost iz leta 2015, kjer lahko vidimo ljudi, kako se sklanjajo nad
ležečo figuro, morda ranjencem ali truplom, čigar telo je umetnik z intervencijo skril pred našimi
pogledi in ga pretvoril v preprosto belo silhueto. V družbi, kot je naša, prepolni šokantnih podob,
sta bolečina in smrt postali neke vrste zabava, producirana s strani množičnih medijev, na katero
smo se navadili in ki nas več ne destabilizira; ravno zato je umetnik ubral drugo pot, tako da skozi
horror vacui zanikanih človeških potez ustvarja čustveno napetost, ki nas ne more pustiti
ravnodušnih.
Mustafa Sabbagh (Aman, 1961) dobro pozna moč vizualnih toposov umetnostne zgodovine, ki
jih v svojih fotografijah preslikava v sodobno raziskovanje, saj je anahronizem, kot nas opominja
umetnostni zgodovinar Georges Didi-Huberman, »časovni način za izražanje presežkov, 1kompleksnosti, prekomernega determiniranja podob« , pri čemer posnetek v sebi združuje
2»montažo heterogenih časov« . Sabbaghova dela pri oblikovanju podobe zavestno vključujejo
ikonske motive, otroke nezavednega, ki se nenehno hranijo s kulturnimi dražljaji, ki obsegajo
likovno umetnost in literaturo, film, glasbo in gledališče, vse do alternativnih trendov in
virtualne resničnosti spleta. Čeprav vsa sklicevanja niso popolnoma natančna, korpus del Onore
al Nero (2014 – danes) predstavlja zmagoslavje teles v klasičnih pozah, kjer sobivajo postave in
ikonografski modeli umetnostne zgodovine ter postajajo formalno sredstvo, na katerega se
navezujejo določene eksistencialne teme, povezane s sodobnostjo. Resnični izvor umetnikovega
ustvarjanja je dihotomična napetost med resničnostjo in fikcijo; ta je vplivala na rojstvo serije
Onore al Nero, ki se želi s podobami režirane fotografije poglobiti v notranjost osebe in s
portretiranimi podobami predstaviti arhetipe človeških stanj v različnih oblikah, vključno z
notranjo krhkostjo. Za posnetke iz te serije je značilna odsotnost perspektivne linije, ki še
potencira izumetničenost pripovedi, skoraj tako, kot da bi bile figure predmet tihožitja: ravno
ozadje sili pogled, da se ustavi na telesu, koži, uprizorjeni obrazni mimiki. Moč čustvene
deflagracije slike tako leži ravno v kontrastu med raznolikostjo dveh osnovnih elementov
fotografije (načrt / gradnja – resnica / psihologija).

Fragility, the theme of this year's festival of contemporary art Art Stays, comes in many shapes,
whether it is formal or inner, sometimes it reflects the time, which passes by and influences on
our memory. In Mihelič gallery you are able to see a dialogue between three artists. They use
photography to accentuate their reflections on a specific theme, each with a different form and
conceptual perspective.
Silvia Camporesi (Forli, 1973) walks around the island for years. Through the photographic story
she presented abandoned buildings and villages, where we find objects and signs, traces of times
that passed. She has created an ideal picture of Italy that is vanishing. As a result a cycle Atlas of
Italy was born. The author commented it in an interview with Francesco Mattozzi for Artribune
that she “presents the cities at the peak of their fragility, places that may cease to exist in one year,
because they will be demolished and structured in a different way. Among this demolished
structures I looked for the guardians of memory, for something that would tell me a story about
this walls, about people that lived there.”
If we look into the research that Silvia Camporesi has done in the past years, we soon realize that
many suggestions influenced on her work and that she is always in-between, between reality and
fiction, between staged photography and photography that covers. This is evident as well in her
work presented in Ptuj, where the author presents ambiguity and »changes« places with a
technique of hand colouring the photos. This is something that is not only a part of a form, but it
presents also the wish to renew the places. With colouring the photographs, which is an old
technique, used by the early master Felice Beato, the most important representative of Yokohama
school, she takes into account a different time consuming technique, as opposed to contemporary,
extremely quick digital photography.
Paolo Ciregia (Viareggio, 1987) with his series Perestrojka offers a reflection on our perception,
which is constantly bombarded with images of war and death, making us become insensitive to
pain and deprived of critical sentiments. The exhibition consists of reportage photographs taken
during the Ukrainian conflict (Majdan square, Dombas conflict), which Ciregia later manipulated
using overlaps, cuts, trims and erasures, to create a different kind of iconographic repertoire, used
to recreate and distort the manner in which the story of the conflict is being told. Installation,
created in this way, tends to destabilize the vision and prevents to reach that, which Roland
Barthes (intervention Shocking photographs in his work Mythologies, 1957) named “a total
readability of a scene, his perfect fit, that diverts us from deeper understanding of a photo in its
scandalous manner. A photo, reduced to its state of pure talk, cannot disorganize us.” Among the
works exhibited there is also the artwork Loudness from 2015, where we can see a group of people
leaning upon the lying figure, maybe a wounded person or a corpse, his body had been hidden by
the artist and transformed in a simple white figure. In a society full of shocking images, like ours,
pain and death became some kind of an amusement, produced by mass media. We got used to it
and those images are not destabilizing us. That is why the artist chose another path; through
horror vacui he forms an emotional tension.

Mustafa Sabbagh (Aman, 1961) knows the power of visual topos of art history and uses it in a
contemporary sense in his research, because anachronism, as art historian Georges Didi-
Huberman says: “is a timely manner to express surplus, complexity, over determination of 1 2images. “ where footage combines “assembling of heterogenic worlds.” Works of Sabbagh form
an image with an intentional usage of iconographic images, children of unconscious, which are
preserved with cultural impulses. They consist of art and literature, film, music and theatre, as
well as alternative trends and virtual realities of internet. Corpus del Onore al Nero (2014 – today)
presents a triumph of bodies in classical poses, where iconographic models of art history and
body live side by side and are becoming a formal means on which existential themes are pinned
that are connected with contemporary society. The source of artist's endeavours is the tension
between fiction and truth; this influenced a birth of series Onore al Nero, which present the
images of staged photography and delve into the inner of a person, presenting the archetypes of
human conditions, including inner fragility. The absence of perspective lines is crucial for these
photos, because it intensifies the artificial story, figures are almost the part of the still life. The
background forces us that our eyes stop at the skin, the body and the facial expressions. The
power of the photo lies therefore in a contrast between two fundamental parts of photography
(plan / construction – truth / psychology).

Mednarodna skupinska razstava FRAGILE, iz katere izhaja celoten umetniški, kreativni in
kuratorski projekt 16. festivala ART STAYS, v prostorih Dominikanskega samostana na Ptuju
pod kuratorstvom Marike Vicari in Jerneja Forbicija, prikazuje igro vseobsegajočih in občasno
nepričakovanih dialogov med krhkostjo materije, umetnosti, človeka in njegove prihodnosti.
KRHKO / MATERIJA
Razstava se pričenja s skulpturami iz črnega pihanega stekla, s Celato večplastnega italijanskega
umetnika Andree Morucchija, ki nakazuje na odprt dialog med krhkostjo materije in človeka.
Izdelane so bile s pomočjo, posebej za to priložnost ustvarjenega kalupa, tako imenovane Atilove
čelade z vrabčevim kljunom iz 15. stoletja, ki jo hranijo v orožarski zbirki Doževe palače v
Benetkah. Kot pravi umetnik: »čelado lahko interpretiramo kot podobo medkulturnosti, ki
presega časovne okvirje in tako služi kot metafora neprestanih povratkov ali nespremenjenih
okoliščin, onstran različnih časov in krajev zgodovinsko-časovnega napredka«.
Če se Morucchio v delu B[æ]d Time ironično poigrava s fonetično transkripcijo pridevnika bad in
samostalnika bed / postelja, kot prikazuje njegova skulptura, pa instalacija slovenske umetnice
Polone Demšar vzpostavlja dialog med krhkostjo materije, tudi tukaj stekla in zbledelimi
podobami otroških obrazov, ki se zdijo kot ujete med oblikami rafiniranega inštrumenta, kot je
violina.
Prisiljeno skupaj je naslov originala in velike inštalacije narejene iz keramike in drugih materialov,
ki je bila ustvarjena posebej za festival Art Stays. Ustvaril jo je slovenski umetnik Boštjan Novak.
Medtem ko Alice Zanin iz papirja ustvarja barvne skulpture, živali iz besed, ki po njenih besedah
opisujejo »ironičen diskurz o ideji kratkotrajnosti, prehodnosti in spremenljivosti, pri čemer
lahko besedni element v njegovi človeški vrednosti zagotovo zasledimo v osebnem in ironičnem
govoru o sami ideji«, pa Giuseppe Piscopo z istim materialom, prav tako papirjem, gradi
spomenik posvečen preprostemu življenju otrok. V tem primeru konj predstavlja spomin na
otroštvo, na njem pa knjiga, dve knjigi … Pripoved, ki nas pelje daleč proč, čeprav ostajamo na
mestu. Različna dela, blazine iz papirja, sledijo miselnim impulzom umetnika in človeka, ob tem
pa ustvarjajo nova čustva.
Instalacija SEmi tandema LALOBA AnnaCrescenzi&RenataPetti in skulpture Flaming Patrizie
Polese se spogledujejo s krhkostjo materialov, z njihovo kratkotrajnostjo in še posebej z uporabo
naravnih elementov. LALOBA z vejicami lešnika in perjem ponuja razmislek o krhkosti obstoja
vseh živih bitij, vključno z ljudmi in označuje nekaj, kar se lahko prekine, (pre)lomi in je hkrati
tako občutljivo, da potrebuje nego; materiali in teksture del Patrizie Polese pa omogočajo
zajemanje, zapletanje, iskanje nepremičnih točk v začasnosti, kar je tudi osrednja tema njenega

ustvarjanja, s katero materiji dodeli novo identiteto.
Islandska umetnica Rosa Sigrun je predstavila Vortex, velike barvne skulpture različnih
velikosti, ki so nastale s počasnimi tehnikami izdelovanja, kot sta pletenje in kvačkanje. Z njimi
želi razširiti in izpostaviti neskončne možnosti, ki jih ponuja nit.
KRHKO / UMETNOST
Italijanski duo Masbedo je z video Fragile (Krhko, 2016) predstavil mladega moškega, ki obišče
galerijo s pavom. Laura Barreca je napisala: “Hoja med antičnimi znamenitimi deli, simbolnimi
objekti, ki arhetipsko predstavljajo lepoto in prisotnost pava, ki poudarja negotovost živali, ki ne
more izraziti svoje narave. Podoba je sugestivna, saj je celo še bolj dramatična zaradi praznih
hodnikov in nezmožnosti predstavljenih karakterjev. Glavna tema dela je koncept “zdravila”:
stara žival za katero mora skrbeti gospodar je prispodoba uvenele puhlosti in večnega potovanja
v lepoto, potovanje, ki ga je Rainber Maria Rilke opisal kot “ogromno na svojem začetku”.
Krhkost umetnosti na katero se naslov dela nanaša, vodi pogled opazovalca in ne želi zaščititi
umetnosti in kulturne dediščine. Metafora, ki nas opominja na nujo po ohranjanju in skrbi za
umetniška dela in kulturno dediščino, kot obliko odpora proti zobi časa in brezskrbnostjo
človeka.
Nobeno naključje ni, da je to delo umeščeno v povezavi s skulpturami mlade umetnice Federice
Ferzoco, katere prefinjeni in intimni odlitki iz gaze se poigravajo ravno s temo krhkosti teles in
materialov ter se pred očmi opazovalca razkrivajo v intenzivni in subtilni kreativni igri tančic, ki
preoblikujejo in predstavljajo nove identitete.
Umetniška dela in njihova umestitev znotraj izvornega refektorija Dominikanskega samostana
predstavljajo sodobno povezavo med umetnostjo in kulturo preteklosti ter razkrivajo, kako je
lahko zgodovina sama po sebi navdih za prihodnost.
FRAGILE / ČLOVEK
Beloruski umetnik Artsiom Parchynski se pri ustvarjanju osredotoča na krhkost človeškega
stanja. V obeh njegovih delih, tako v instalaciji kot v skulpturi, se skriva človeška figura, ujeta v
materijo. Čeprav po eni strani človek ni izgubil svoje osebnosti in je nekakšna silhueta skulpture
iz kovinske mreže in sena, po drugi strani noge ostajajo ujete v cement, kot da predstavljajo
(morda) šibko upanje na upor. Soočamo se z minljivostjo naše varnosti in vseh socialnih ter
kulturnih konstruktov, ki bodo kmalu postali predmet nove arheološke zbirke.
Poleg človeške ranljivosti se ponuja razmislek tudi o naravi njegove moči, o oblikah, ki jih lahko
prevzame in o posledicah, ki jih lahko povzroči njegov vpliv na družbeno in kulturno življenje v
državi. Tako je nastal film »Chang'an Boulevard«, v katerem je znani kitajski umetnik Ai Weiwei v
rednih časovnih intervalih snemal glavno cesto v Pekingu na vseh petinštiridesetih kilometrih
njene dolžine. Na vsakih petdeset metrov je umetnik za minuto pritrdil kamero pod istim kotom.
Celoten film je sestavljen iz 608ih segmentov, od katerih vsak traja minuto, skupaj pa 10 ur in 13
minut. Pri »Chang'an Boulevard« gre tako za kartiranje, za skupek fragmentov, ki, poleg tega da
dokumentirajo kitajsko prestolnico, sočasno tudi prikličejo točno določene razmere v danem
trenutku življenja mesta, ki je zaznamovano z neprestanimi in korenitimi spremembami
FRAGILE / PRIHODNOST
Tudi prihodnost je krhka, o čemer na razstavi pričajo dela treh umetnikov (Mladen Miljanović,
Andrea Tagliapietra in Santiago Sierra), ki se med seboj zelo razlikujejo v umetniškem,
geografskem in osebnem smislu, a vendar so povezani v istem odnosu do človeškega tkiva in
branja sodobne družbe.
Prihodnost (Future 2017), črn kos granita okrašen z eponimno grafiko in podprt z berglami,
umetniško delo avtorja Mladena Mjilianoviča, je portret z naslovom Make of violence (Narejeno
z nasiljem). Zgleda kot nagrobnik, mrtva, dolgo pozabljena možnost, izgubljena na neskončnem
zvezdnatem nebu kozmosa. Prihodnost stoji kot mož, ki se naslanja na steno in gleda v nas, v
Sedanjost. Prihodnost je ranjen človek, njegova podoba projicira pusto in nemirno perspektivo
fizične in psihološko travmatizirane človekove prihodnosti. Prihodnost bi morala biti polna
upanja. Brez patosa, delo poda jasno trditev, mi, prihodnost ima vse ključe v rokah, da spremeni
Prihodnost v ranjeno, slabo perspektivo ali še huje, da jo pokoplje.
Umetniško raziskovanje Andree Tagliapetre raziskuje človeka, osvetljuje krhkost in nasprotja, ki
ga odlikujejo. Na razstavi skupaj z delom Human side (Človeška stran) je človek primerjan z
živaljo. Umetniško osebno raziskovanje postavlja v ospredje individualne spore ob sobivanju s
primarnimi instinkti in razumom. Z instalacijo tišine, osem človeških glav s široko odprtimi usti,
ki ne morejo kričati in so le v tihem dialogu, ki izraža vso krhkost in nezmožnost izražanja na
svetu.
A Burned word (Ožgana beseda – prihodnost) avtorja Santiaga Sierre, ki je predstavljena v videu v
El Cabanyalu v Valenciji, prikazuje tradicionalno ribiško mesto, ki se je leta borilo proti
špekulativnim načrtom mestnega sveta. Projekt je bil izpeljan v sodelovanju s sosednjimi društvi
in organizacijo Periféries collective. Beseda je bila zgrajena na delavnici Manola Martina.
Interpretacija in po možnosti dokumentiranje stanja negotovosti in nestabilnosti, vidnih posledic
problematičnih političnih, družbenih ali gospodarskih razmer, so elementi, ki zaznamujejo delo
turške umetnice Banuje Cennetoğlu. Mesta, portretirana v video instalaciji Are there any palm
trees in Grozny (2005), so hkrati ločena in povezana; zanje je značilna minljivost njihove uporabe in
pomanjkanje identitete in vezi izključena so iz vsakršnega časovnega razvoja, kot stranski --
produkt družbe, ki jo vodijo interesi za doseganje kvot.

International group exhibition FRAGILE, which is based on the curatorial and artistic project of
the 16th edition of the festival of contemporary art Art Stays, led by curator Marika Vicari and
director of the festival Jernej Forbici, in the premises of the Dominican monastery in Ptuj, presents
a play between all - encompassing and sometimes unexpected dialogues between fragile
materials, art, human and its future.
FRAGILE / MATTER
The exhibition begins with sculptures made of black glass, with Celata of a multi-faceted Italian
artist Andrea Morucchio that inclines an open dialogue between fragility of man and matter.
Sculptures were made with a mould created especially for the festival, so called Attila's helmet
with a sparrow's beak from 15th century, which can be found in a collection of arms in Doge's
Palace in Venice. Artist explains: “this helmet can be interpreted as an image of multiculturalism,
that goes beyond time and serves as a metaphor of constant returns or unchanged circumstances,
beyond different times of historical – time progress.”
If Morucchio ironically plays with phonetical transcription of an adjective bad and noun bed in
the work entitled B[æ]d Time, a Slovene author Polona Demšar opens a dialogue between fragile
matter, here as well glass and faded images of children's faces, that seem trapped in the forms of
refined instrument, like violin.
Forced together is the title of the original and unseen huge installation, made of ceramics and mixed
materials, created especially for the Festival ART STAYS by the Slovenian artist Boštjan Novak.
Alice Zanin creates colorful sculptures made of paper, animals made of words, that describe, as
she says “ironical discourse on idea of short duration, transistorizes and unsteadiness, where the
word element can be traced in personal and ironical speech about the idea.” Giuseppe Piscopo
makes a monument made of the same material, devoted to simple life of children. In this case the
hourse represents a memory on childhood, on it lying one book, two books … A story that brings
us far away, even though we stand on the same spot. Different works, paper cushions, are coming
from impulses of the artist and human and are evoking new feelings.
Instalation SEmi by tandem LALOBA - Anna Crescenzi & Renata Petti and sculptures Flaming
by Patrizie Polese are flirting with fragility of matter, with their short duration and especially
with their use of natural elements. LALOBA with hazel bracelets and feathers offers a reflection
on fragility of existence of all living creatures. It marks something that can be cut, broken and is so
fragile that it needs some care. Materials and textures of Patrizia Polese are enabling entalgement,
searching for set points in temporality, which is also a main theme of her work, with which she
gives the materials new identity.
The Iceland artist Rósa Sigrún presents Vortex, big colored sculptures in variable sizes, created
using slow process techniques, like knitting and crochet. With these techniques, she would like to
expand and bring out the endless possibilities of a thread.

FRAGILE / ART
The Italian duo Masbedo with the video, Fragile (2016) staged a young man's visit to the gallery
halls in the presence of a peacock. Write Laura Barreca about it: “Walking among the
masterpieces of antiquity, symbolic objects of archetypal beauty, the presence of the peacock
underlines the essential precariousness of the living animal and its impairment that renders it
inapt to represent its nature. The image is highly suggestive because it's made even more
dramatic due to the emptiness of the halls, facing the perpetual immobility of the painted
characters. The main theme of these works is the concept of "cure": the old animal, object of the
care of its master, is a metaphor of the combination of a faded vanity and the eternal journey into
beauty, a trip defined by Rainer Maria Rilke as "the tremendous at its beginning." The fragility of
art, to which the title of the work refers to, engages the observer's gaze and warns of the necessity
to provide protection of art and cultural heritage. A metaphor that reminds us of the need to
preserve and care for our artistic and cultural heritage as a form of resistance to time and
carelessness of man”.
This art work is presented together with art works of young artists Federica Ferzoco, which is not
a coincidence. Her work of intimate plaster casts made of gauze are playing with the theme of
brittleness and materials and are revealing themselves in front of an observer as a subtle and
creative play of veils that reform and present new identities.
Art works and their presentation in the refectory of the Dominican monastery represent a link
between art, contemporary times and history, and stresses out how history can be inspiration for
future.
FRAGILE / HUMAN
Belorussian artist Artsiom Parchynski focuses on fragility of human conditions. In both of his
works, in sculpture and in installation, a human figure is hidden trapped into the matter. Even
though the human hasn't lost his identity and is formed out of metal net and hay, his legs are
captured in concrete, as if they represent a slight hope for rebellion. We are facing the
transitoriness of our safety and all social and cultural constructs, that are soon going to be part of
a new archeological collection.
With human transitoriness, the focus goes to reflection of human power as well, about forms that
he can take over, and on consequences his influence can cause on social and cultural life in the
country. In this way a film by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei was produced entitled Chang'an
Boulevard. He filmed the main road in Beijing in regular time intervals on all 45 kilometres of its
length. Every 50 meters the artist fixed his camera for 1 minute at the same angle. The whole
movie is made od 608 segments, of which each is long a minute, together 10 hours and 13 minutes.
Chang'an Boulevard is about mapping, a group of fragments, that are documenting the Chinese
capital town, that are bringing forward certain circumstances in a given moment of the city life,
that is marked by constant change.
FRAGILE / FUTURE
Future is fragile as well, which is shown in the artworks of (Mladen Miljanović, Andrea
Tagliapietra and Santiago Sierra), that are very different in their artistic, geographic and
personal sense, but they are connected in the same relationship towards human form and reading
of contemporary society.
Future (2017) a piece of black granite adorned with the eponymous engraving and supported by
crutches, the artwork of Mladen Miljanović is a portrait made of violence. It looks like a
tombstone, a dead, long-forgotten possibility lost in the infinite starry sky of the cosmos. But
Future stands like a man, leaning against the wall and staring at us, the Present. Future is a
wounded man whose image projects the bleak and uneasy perspective of a physically and
psychologically traumatised humanity's future. Future is, or should be full of hope, though.
Without any pathos, the work makes a clear statement; we, the Present, have all the keys in hand
not to turn Future into a wounded, lame perspective or worse, to bury it.
Andrea Tagliapietra's artistic research investigates the human being, highlighting the fragility
and contradictions that distinguish it. Here in the show with The human side, the human is
compared with the animal. The artist's personal research aims at bringing out the individual's
disagreement in coexisting with the primordial instincts and the necessities of reason. With the
installation silence, eight human heads with mouths wide open, outstretched in the impossibility
of screaming and involved in a silent dialogue that expresses all the fragility and
incommunicability of the word.
A Burned word (future) of Santiago Sierra, rappresented in the video was performed in El
Cabanyal, Valencia, a traditional shing town that for years has been ghting against the
speculative plans of the city council. The project was conducted in collaboration with the
neighborhood association and Periféries collective. The word was built by the fallas Workshops
of Manolo Martin.
Interpretation and documenting of the state of transitoriness, consequences of political, social
and economic circumstances are elements that prevail the works of Turkish artist Banu
Cennetoğlu. A portrait of cities in video installation Are there any palm trees and Grozny (2005) are
separated and connected at the same time. Evident for them is lack of use and identity. They are
excluded out of all development, as a side product of society that is only interested in pursuing
their quotas.

Riccardo Costantini in Stefano Bullo (lastnik delavnice Vetrate Artistiche Murano in vizualni
umetnik) se skupaj sprašujeta, kako lahko steklo komunicira z osebnim umetniškim
raziskovanjem posameznega umetnika.
Preizkusila sta najbolj klasično tehniko emajliranja stekla, grisaille, ki ji sledijo neprozorne in
prozorne barvne glazure, ter spajanje barvno različnih stekel pri visokih temperaturah. Rezultat
je izjemen umetniški projekt in še izjemnejša razstava v Galeriji Magistrat v Mestni hiši na Ptuju.

The most classic technique of glass painting, the grisaille, is then tested, followed by opaque and
transparent colored glazes, as well as the fusion of different colores glasses at high temperatures.
The result is an outstanding art project and an even more extraordinary exhibition at the
Magistrat Gallery in the Town Hall of Ptuj.

Nestabilnost in nematerialnost sta koncepta, ki neustrašno prežemata predstavljena dela. Če
lahko po raziskovanju nebesnih oblakov in grajenju stavb iz tankih volnenih nitk ugotovimo,
da ima duša težo, sedaj preusmerimo pozornost k majhnim drobcem trave in papirja.
Delikatni in minimalistični rastlinski elementi, ki z efemerno konsistenco rastejo iz stenskega
epidermisa.
Narava. Če ji pustimo prosto pot, bo s svojimi kompleksnimi izmenjavami in interakcijami
ponovno zavzela mesta, ki so ji nekoč pripadala.
In ponovno preučujemo to, kar je samoumevno in banalno, minimalne stvari, in očitnemu
nadenemo novo podobo. Med vizualnim procesom pa nam napake služijo kot šablona za
iznajdbe.
Instability and immateriality are the concepts that fearlessly pervade the showcased works. If
the soul has weight, as we discover from exploring the clouds of the heavens, and erecting
buildings made from fine threads of wool, then let us now focus more closely on tiny
fragments of grass and paper. Delicate, minimalist vegetation elements, which grow from the
wall epidermis with an ephemeral consistency.
Nature. If we let it run free, it will use its complex exchange of interactions to occupy once
again the spaces that used to belong to it.
And again, we find ourselves studying that which is self-evident and banal, the little things,
putting a new perspective on the obvious. During the visual process, the errors serve as a
matrix for inventions.

Izjemno izvirno delo v svoji krhkosti je bilo ustvarjeno neposredno na razstavišču in
predstavljeno v čudovitih obokanih prostorih razstavišča Knjižnice Ivana Potrča na Ptuju. Maria
Fernanda Guzmán je v času svoje umetniške rezidence na Ptuju ustvarila veliko instalacijo
neskončnih grebenov, vozlov in vezi z različnimi kiparskimi pristopi.
Extremely original work in its fragility was created on the spot and presented in the beautiful
vaulted exhibition rooms of the Ivan Potrč Public Library in Ptuj. Maria Fernanda Guzmán
created a large installation of endless reefs, knots and bonds with various sculptural approaches
during her artistic residency in Ptuj.
