According to Nku, she received a call from Edgars, Durban Head Office, informing her of a women who was in the process of purchasing a cellphone to the value of R5500, using Nku’s identity book. Nku said the cashier asked the women some questions regarding the information of the Edgars card for security reasons and she could not answer them correct. “The cashier informed the manager and they called the police. While they were waiting for the police to arrive the woman ran away. The store manager advised me to go to the nearest Edgars shop and block my card which I did. Three days after the incident I received another call from Edgars Johannesburg Head Office wanting me to confirm that I have changed the address and now reside in Durban. They also informed me that I have purchased goods at Ballito mall Edgars to the value of R3555 and also about

R4000 at Gate way. I told them that I don’t know anything regarding the items bought in my name outside Johannesburg,” said Nku. She went to Home Affairs department to check and she found out that no one has applied for her identity book. “I applied for my identity book in 1999. The identity book which is used by the suspect was issued in 2008. The Home Affairs departmant says there is no- one who has issued my identity book in that year. I am very worried because this person is accumulating debt and fraudulently using my name. I have blocked all my cards but the police refused to assist stating that I cannot open a case for someone that I don’t know,” explained Nku. Speaking to tame TIMES, Wesley Moonsay, store manager for Edgars at The Workshop in Durban Central Business Centre confirmed that the incident happened. “The female suspect could not confirm her contact details, address, and when last she made her purchase and instalments. The identity book that she was carrying had a different font size. We called the police but unfortunately the woman was accompanied by five males and

they managed to escape.” Meanwhile, Captain Ndobe, Communications Officer of Katlehong Police said, “The victim should produce a proof of the statement of the goods that have been purchased from Edgars. The police will open a fraud case that will be transferred to Durban where the crime was committed.” Albert Matsaung from Alberton Home Affairs said, “The victim should take an affidavit from the police to Home Affairs where it will be checked and investigated. If it happens that there is fraud the identity book will be blocked and the victim will be given a new identity book.”

June, child abuse is still a major challenge facing the country. The following are some of the children’s rights that should be acknowledged:

Section 28 of the Bill of Rights, entitled “Children”, says:1. Every child has the right to - a. a name and a nationality from birth; b. family care or parental care, or to appropriate alternative care when removed from the family environment; c. basic nutrition, shelter, basic health care services and social services; d. be protected from maltreatment, neglect, abuse or degradation; e. be protected from exploitative labour practices f. not be required or permitted to perform work or provide services that - i.are inappropriate for a person of that child’s age; or ii. place at risk the child’s well-being, education, physical or mental health or spiritual, moral or social development; g. not be detained except as a measure of last resort, in which case, in addition to the rights a child enjoys under sections 12 and 35, the child may be detained only for the shortest appropriate period of time, and has the right to be - i. kept separately from detained persons over the age of 18 years; and ii. is treated in a manner, and kept in conditions, that take account of the child’s age; h. have a legal practitioner assigned to the child by the state, and at state expense, in civil proceedings affecting the child, if substantial injustice would otherwise result; and i. not be used directly in armed conflict, and to be protected in times of armed conflict. 2. A child’s best interests are of paramount importance in every matter concerning the child. 3. In this section ‘child’ means a person under the age of 18 years.

themselves. It was the first time that we hosted such a great event in our mall. We had more than 100 entries but only allowed 65 participants. In a bid to protect and assist elderly people who are the most vulnerable people in the society, Sizabadala Day Care Centre held an opening day at Phola Park hall.The aim of the event was to make the community aware of the services that they offer for the senior citizens. The centre caters for the elderly people who are vulnerable and abused at home. They conduct different activities for the senior citizens including; exercising, sports, networking sessions; skills work and offer them meals during the day. Nomande Strato, an elderly who attends at the centre said, “We are abused at our respective homes by our children, they are disrespectful and controlling our finances. We are stressed of staying alone at home. We are also sick of high blood and diabetics. The centre is a place where we can engage with other elderly people to discuss the challenges that we are faced with. We are exercising and doing sporting activities which is good for the health. The centre is also a place where we hide and seek protection.”Speaking to tame TIMES, Miriam Nqwiliso, board member and social worker at Sizabadala Day Care Centre said, “The elderly people are abused financially, physical, mental and

neglected. They need people that they can d i s c l o s e t h e i r problems. Some of them spend the whole day doing nothing and the centre will keep them busy. We also help with r e f e r r a l s , counselling, advice and opening cases of the affected elderly people.”She added that the centre is appealing for the donations in terms of funds and food.The centre targets senior citizens from Phola Park, Thinasonke, Eden Park and Thokoza Extension 5. It is based in Phola Park Extension 1 at stand number 12834. It operates on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 09:00 to 16:00 pm.

Elderly were encouraged to eat balanced diet meals and exercise regularly for healthy lifestyle at the Vuka Health and Wellness campaign held at Thokoza Auditorium recently.The event was hosted by Ekurhuleni health and social department. Senior citizens came in numbers to attend the event; the hall was packed with approximately 700 people. There were different experts from health, social development and Ekurhuleni Metro Police, educating the senior citizens about their rights and responsibilities of living healthy. Senior citizens took part in aerobics and exercise in a bid to keep them active. They were also tested for sugar, high blood levels and diabetics.Tinyiko Molefe, government communications officer said, “We are teaching the senior citizens the importance of taking care of themselves health wise. We taught them to

eat healthy and refrain from eating food with high levels of salt and fat to avoid diseases including obesity and high blood pressure.” Angie Nhambi, Manager of Acute and Chronic diseases at Ekurhuleni Health and Social Development said, “We are educating people who are suffering from chronic diseases reminding them that treatment alone will not help, they need to eat healthy and exercise. We are also encouraging them to practise food gardening so that they can produce and eat fresh vegetables and fruits that are good for health. The elderly were also advised to be part of support groups so that they can discuss their challenges with their peers.”Merica Baduza, one of the elderly who attended the event said, “They have taught us how to take the treatments and that we have to exercise regularly to stay healthy and fit. We were also warned to refrain from smoking as it causes cancer and sinus. They also urged us to share what we have learnt with our children and friends who did not attend the event.”

Adherence Club foundation based in Katlehong is a support group that is uniting, supporting and empowering people living with chronic diseases such as HIV\AIDS, cancer and tuberculosis.The club is an affiliate of Treatment Action Campaign Katlehong branch. It consists of 10 members and was launched in January this year. Thulani Gama, club chairman said, “The aim of the club is to help people who are not taking treatment because of fear of stigmatisation. It is a social group, were people with chronic diseases share and discuss their challenges and assist

each other to live healthy lifestyles with the illness.”The club members gather every first week of the month to visit one of their members in their house. They also have a stokvel where they pay subscription fees to the member that they are visiting. “We welcome people suffering from chronic diseases to join our club especially those who are depressed and isolated. They need people of our expertise to share their problems,” said Gama.The club is based at stand number 934 Twala section in Katlehong. Learners urged to pursue engineering careersCharity [email protected]

Maths Centre in partnership with Joy Global, EOH and Department of Education hosted a Maps and Mirrors 2014 at Fumana High School recently. The event was a career exhibition targeting grade 8 to 11 doing Maths , Science and Technology from 14 schools around Kathorus namely; Katlehong Technical High School , Fumana High School , Landulwazi Secondary School, Vosloorus Comprehensive School, Buhlebuzile Secondary School, Ekurhuleni School for the Deaf, Kwa Dukathole Secondary School, Lethukuthula Secondary School, Mpilisweni Secondary School, Mpontsheng Secondary School , Ponego Secondary School , ThokoThaba Secondary School, Thuto-Pele Secondary School and Ezibeleni School of the disabled.

Experts in the field of engineering, Science, Mathematics and former top matric students in Kathorus were the main speakers on the event. The aim was to encourage learners to consider careers in engineering and artisans. The grade 8 and 9 learners were motivated to choose Mathematics, Science and Technology subjects in order to pursue careers in engineering. They were urged to close the gap of lack of engineering in the country and reflection of career opportunities in the industry. There were also technical exhibitions from the event sponsors showcasing their field of work.The approximate number of 600 learners attended the career exhibition and they were given goodie bags with information regarding the learner ship and bursaries that are available in the engineering sector.

Record breaking criminals sentenced

Justice has finally taken its course after two house breaking criminals operating around Vosloorus; Thato Mashabani (24) and Thabiso Mokabo (25) have been intensely sentenced to imprisonment by Vosloorus Court recently.Mashabeni was sentenced to 33 years imprisonment for housebreaking with intention to cause bodily harm, robbery with aggravated circumstance and robbery with intention to cause bodily harm. His accomplice, Mokabo was sentenced to 54 years imprisonment for housebreaking with intention to cause bodily harm, robbery with aggravated circumstance and robbery with intention to cause bodily harm, pointing with a firearm and possession of ammunition. He was also found with previous convictions of robbery, house breaking and theft.Sergeant Lesiba Kekana, Vosloorus Detective Unit, said according to the victim Pearl Gumede (20), it was around 9:00 am when she was sleeping alone in the house at Suthu section in Vosloorus on 11 September 2013. She heard some noise and decided to wake up and check. She was approached by two unknown males who demanded the money and keys of the safe. The victim screamed for help and the neighbours heard and they called the metro police who were nearby. The metro police arrived and they were over powered by the suspect. The suspect took the police firearm, boarded a taxi and ran

away. The community who witnessed the scene stopped a Katlehong police vehicle which was passing by. They informed the police who made a chase and arrested the two suspects. The police seized the firearm from the suspect. The suspects appeared at Vosloorus court on 12 September and the case was postponed for official bail application. They appeared for the second time on 20 September and the bail was denied. Suspects remained in custody till the trail on 22 April 2014 and were found guilty. The trail; was postponed to 12 May for sentencing. “Hope the message is sent to the community that crime like this will not be tolerated by the court. House breaking and robbery is a serious offence,” said Sergeant Kekana.

Annelize Gilbert, a 27 years-old female went missing on the 11th May, 2014. She is 1, 6 metres tall, weighs 55-60 kg, with brown eyes, light brown hair ( to chin ) and is slender. She was last seen wearing denim jeans with white dots and a blouse or shirt. It is believed that she lives at 7 Guava Street in Alrapark and left her home to visit her mother at 50 Gazelle Drive in Alrapark. She also left her mother’s place and did not arrive back at her home. Lethokuhle Mazibuko, a 30 year-old black female went missing on 4 May. She has a medium body with dark brown eyes, short black hair and average height. It is alleged that she was last seen on 4 May when she was going with her mother and two aunts to KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). She went missing at Doornfontein Shoprite. She was wearing a white dress with red and black flowers, grey jacket, and brown shoes and carrying a green bag. Mazibuko is mentally handicapped. Caroline Molefe (24) from Zonkizizwe had a dream to be a super model in the beauty industry from childhood. However, lack of resources, underdevelopment and a poor background hinders the gorgeous young lady to achieve her dream. “My township is underdeveloped and there is scarcity of resources which is a major stumbling block to the success of local ladies. I realise that my dreams are quickly fading, hence I am crying out loud for help. The Maskandi music genre continues to reclaim its rightful place in the hearts, minds and soul of people within the mu-sic circles. It is for this reason that the Zonkizizwe based Maskandi kings Amadwala recent album dubbed Zenzile receives enormous airplay in Kasi FM, Jozi FM, UKhozi FM and K FM. According to the group leader, Xolani Ntombela, the album consists of 10 Maskandi hit tracks. “Some of the leading tracks which are receiving enough airplay are Khumbule Khaya, Wandlwengula ugogo and Iqili. These songs talks about the social ills that are taking plays in the country which needs us as a nation to remedy the situation before it escalate further,” explained Ntomb-

ela. The album was recorded at a Down Town Studio in Joburg and it is distributed by Con-gress records. They have already sold over 3000 copies and the group is performing in various events across the metropolis of Ekurhuleni. The group lead dancer is a 4-year old Bon-gokuhle “Qhawe” Buthelezi who started dancing with the group when he was two years old. Thatukani Zuma plays a guitar; lead guitarist is Mbhodobhodo Mdlalose, Phathaphatha Ngcobo plays keyboard. Xolani Ntombela who hails from Emtuba-tuba in Kwa Zulu-Natal but now resides in Zonkizizwe Township is the music compo-sure and a lead singer. South African Milk TartletsMethod:

Filling Ingredients: 1litre milk180g sugar4 eggs90g corn flour90gflour5ml vanilla essence60g Stork BakeCinnamon for dusting

For miniature tarts, the pastry mixture can make thirty three 3cm diameter tartlets. Just remember to make smaller rice pouches when blind baking. The milk tart mixture can make 40 tartlets,

thus to balance the mixtures out to get the same quantities from the tart and pastry mixture, take the pastry mixtures and multiply all ingredients by 1.3

Crust Method:Sift all the dry ingredients together in a bowl.Rub in Stork Bake with the dry ingredients until well combined. Add one egg at a time and mix until the eggs are fully combined with the flour and margarine mixture. Line a 23cm baking tin (approx 7cm in height), put in the freezer the mixture until the pastry is firm.Bake at 180ºC for 10 - 20min. Before baking, take about 1kg of rice and cover it in the tin foil. Add this bag of rice into the centre of the pastry lined tin.This will keep the pastry from shrinking (which is blind baking). Remove from oven and allow cooling for about 1 hour.

Filling Method: 1) Heat the milk to boiling point.2) Beat eggs and sugar until smooth and add corn flour and flour. Whisk until well combined. Add the hot milk mixture to the egg mixture, slowly tempering the two mixtures. Sweet Lovers set free local talent

To be born in the impoverished dark Streets of Zonkizizwe Township is not a stumbling block; that could not hinder the talent of Sweet Lovers dance group because, their attitude determine their altitude. As a result, it has motivated the group leader, Tshepo Mathabela together with his colleagues to set up a production company a year ago. “We believe that there is lot of talent in our township, ready to place Zonkizizwe on the map. We have set up a team of reputable dance teachers who are entrusted to identify talented local children. They are being tasked to fine-tune dancer’s talent in Koffifi, Sbujwa, Pantsula and Gumboots dance genres,” explained Mathabela.He said lack of activities for the youth in the township gave birth to the formation of the Sweet Lovers. The group continues to grow annually and have 40 registered dancers trained in various dance genres. Mathabela said since the formation of the group they have partaken in various dance competitions and events including, Step Up, recent handover of Water Born toilets celebration event in Zonkizizwe and Twatwa Dance Festival. Mathabela said their objective is to plough back their talent to the local youngsters. They are appealing to the local government to build an art centre in Zonkizizwe and also urge local business people to sponsor their dance group.

Lebo Mosolodi [email protected] Katlehong based Sonqoba Primary School leaved up to their name when they returned their Danone Inter District crown at the event held in Eden Park Stadium.There were 8 teams which were suppose to battle up for one available place in the inter district finals. “We were disappointed that Alberton Primary School soccer team withdrew and we were left with 7 teams to contest for number one position. The remaining schools were Sonqoba, Phumula, Tswaragano, Leondale, Parkrand, Eden Ridge and Reiger Park Primary School,” said Danone Provincial coordinator, Thulas Sibeko.He said teams were divided into two streams and only the two top teams in each stream qualified to play in the final. Sonqoba were the winners of stream A and played against Reiger Park who were the winners of stream B. The Katlehong based school Sonqoba won their final game 1-0 against Reiger Park School. “They were crowned the Danone Ekurhuleni South District champions. Sonqoba would be pitted either Ekurhuleni North or Ekurhuleni East champions in the Danone Inter District competition. The final will be played at Somhlolo Soccer Grounds in Katlehong on May 29,” concluded Sibeko.

Speaking to tame TIMES, Jase said they were disappointed to learn that this year their athletic club would not sponsor their travelling and accommodation fee as usual. “However, that should not stand before my dream of winning or salvaging some pride in the Comrade Marathon. I am dedicated to run the 90 kilometres downhill race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. I am asking for help in raising R1400 for transportation and accommodation funds. Transport departs this Saturday from Johannesburg to Durban,” explained Jase.He promised to dish out a five star performance especially in the veterans category. Jase has partaken in the Two Ocean, City too City, Soweto and Sarens Edenvale Marathon. “I have won the Orlando Athletics Marathon 10 and 21 kilometres races four times and Vodacom Marathon 42 kilometres. I also won Protea Glen 10 Kilometres and Jack Kipson 42 kilometres in veteran’s category,” explained Jase.
