Business ColumnDeliverance from the demons of unemployment and poverty by the spirit of co-operatives

The population growth and ongoing strikes that potentially lead to retrenchments could add on the number of the unemployment stats. The real question we should be asking ourselves is; what are the prospects of finding decent employment in South Africa, given the inability of the economy to create new jobs? What is the basis of believing that the economy will turn the corner soon, change the downward spiral and stop shedding of jobs? People have a duty to continuously seek creative means to enhance their prospects of mainstream economic participation and Co-operative enterprising comes to mind. In the South African context, the co-operatives are a legal form of business, governed by the Co-operatives Act, No. 14 of 2005. The Act provides for the formation and registration of co-operatives. Furthermore; it recognises the co-operative values of self-help, self-reliance, self-responsibility, democracy, and equality and social responsibility.Increased co-operative movements can play a major role in the economic and social development of the Republic of South Africa, in particular by creating employment, generating income, facilitating broad-based black economic empowerment and eradicating poverty;A follow up editorial will look deeper into the characteristics of the co-operatives; the principles of the co-operatives, the benefits of conducting businesses a co-operative way, how to go about establishing a co-operative and where to find assistance. More is coming, just keep watching this

space...make sure that every time you have a copy of your companion, the tame TIMES.The column is contributed Bheki Phakathi from Nkwali Business Solution based in Spruitview. However, lack of resources, underdevelopment and a poor background hinders the gorgeous young lady to achieve her dream. “My township is underdeveloped and there is scarcity of resources which is a major stumbling block to the success of local ladies. I realise that my dreams are quickly fading, hence I am crying out loud for help. I would be glad if nearby modelling agencies could recruit me or test my potential,” asked Molefe. She first discovered her modelling talent while she competed for Miss Albert Moroka High School in Free State province. Molefe made it to the top three finalists of that beauty competition, which earned her place as one of the top aspiring models from her school. As if that was not enough, she achieved first princess position in the Miss Winnie Secondary School beauty pageant. She further took part in Miss Rand Water where she made it to the top three finalists. “I am confident to walk the ramp without fearing what people might say about me. A beauty queen should always have confidence to overcome stage fright. My dream is to compete in the most prestigious beauty competitions held at home, on the continent and internationally. I am blessed with features that are appealing in this industry, namely height, beauty, required body structure and self esteem which are plus factors,” explained the vivacious Molefe. Her international role model is a renowned supermodel Tyra Banks because she rose to prominence despite her humble beginnings. Her local role model is Connie “Karabo Moroka” Ferguson. professionalism every time she gets before the camera. “It is unfortunate that my early modelling success has not yet born a positive result since I matriculated a few years ago. My fortune would only change if I could register with a nearby reputable modelling agency. I promise not to disappoint but to raise the agency’s name and profile in the beauty industry,” concluded Molefe.Modelling agencies interested to groom the sparkling, Caroline Molefe to be a super model can contact her at: 084 3319 295.

Lazarus Ntimba advised motorists that before they embark on a long distance journeys, they should always get enough sleep and eat something. Highly caffeinated beverages are not necessarily the best way to stay awake while driving, warns Ntimba. He said at first a motorist who had caffeinated beverages would feel more alert, the effects can recede with time, and their level of attention may deteriorate, although you remain awake. What car are you driving?I am driving a BMW 325I coupe, 2010 model. Is this your first car?No, I am a number one fan of BMW cars and also have a 7series. What features do you like about your car?I love the standard features about my car. I wont change anything because I believe the car is designed for me.

Do you have any speed fines?Yes I do, but I’m not at liberty to disclose the number of ticket fines owed. What gadget you wouldn’t leave home without? My Ipad and my cell phone. I can work with my Ipad when I’m on the road which is convenient. Is there any long distance you have travelled with your car? I have travelled to Kwa- Zulu Natal, I reached my destination within a short space of time. What advice can you give to new drivers? They need to know when they had enough to drink and start respecting the rules of the road when driving. They should start embarking on their long journey during the morning hours because there are few cars on the road.

South African Milk TartletsMethod:

IngredientsCrust Ingredients:80g castor sugar210g Stork Bake, room temperature330g flour2 eggsA pinch of salt1kg of rice and tin foil

Filling Ingredients: 1litre milk180g sugar4 eggs90g corn flour90gflour5ml vanilla essence60g Stork BakeCinnamon for dusting

For miniature tarts, the pastry mixture can make thirty three 3cm diameter tartlets. Just remember to make smaller rice pouches when blind baking. The milk tart mixture can make 40 tartlets,

thus to balance the mixtures out to get the same quantities from the tart and pastry mixture, take the pastry mixtures and multiply all ingredients by 1.3

Crust Method:Sift all the dry ingredients together in a bowl.Rub in Stork Bake with the dry ingredients until well combined. Add one egg at a time and mix until the eggs are fully combined with the flour and margarine mixture. Line a 23cm baking tin (approx 7cm in height), put in the freezer the mixture until the pastry is firm.Bake at 180ºC for 10 - 20min. Before baking, take about 1kg of rice and cover it in the tin foil. Add this bag of rice into the centre of the pastry lined tin. This will keep the pastry from shrinking (which is blind baking). Remove from oven and allow cooling for about 1 hour.

Filling Method: 1) Heat the milk to boiling point.2) Beat eggs and sugar until smooth and add corn flour and flour. Whisk until well combined. Add the hot milk mixture to the egg mixture, slowly tempering the two mixtures. Keep stirring while adding the milk and make sure it is added slowly so as to not scramble the eggs. 3) Place back on heat and stir until thickened. The longer you leave it on the heat, the thicker it will become. For a good milk tart, mixture should be a thick consistency like custard.4) Take off the heat and add vanilla and Stork Bake, bake for 15min at 180ºC or until slightly firm.5) Dust the baked milk tart with cinnamon. This will depend on how much you like cinnamon. Leave overnight in a fridge to set properly.

Sweet Lovers set free local talent

To be born in the impoverished dark Streets of Zonkizizwe Township is not a stumbling block; that could not hinder the talent of Sweet Lovers dance group because, their attitude determine their altitude. As a result, it has motivated the group leader, Tshepo Mathabela together with his colleagues to set up a production company a year ago. “We believe that there is lot of talent in our township, ready to place Zonkizizwe on the map. We have set up a team of reputable dance teachers who are entrusted to identify talented local children. They are being tasked to fine-tune dancer’s talent in Koffifi, Sbujwa, Pantsula and Gumboots dance genres,” explained Mathabela. He said lack of activities for the youth in the township gave birth to the formation of the Sweet Lovers. The group continues to grow annually and have 40 registered dancers trained in various dance genres. Mathabela said since the formation of the group they have partaken in various dance competitions and events including, Step Up, recent handover of Water Born toilets celebration event in Zonkizizwe and Twatwa Dance Festival. Mathabela said their objective is to plough back their talent to the local youngsters. They are appealing to the local government to build an art centre in Zonkizizwe and also urge local business people to sponsor their dance group.

Lebo Mosolodi [email protected] Katlehong based Sonqoba Primary School leaved up to their name when they returned their Danone Inter District crown at the event held in Eden Park Stadium. There were 8 teams which were suppose to battle up for one available place in the inter district finals. “We were disappointed that Alberton Primary School soccer team withdrew and we were left with 7 teams to contest for number one position. The remaining schools were Sonqoba, Phumula, Tswaragano, Leondale, Parkrand, Eden Ridge and Reiger Park Primary School,” said Danone Provincial coordinator, Thulas Sibeko. He said teams were divided into two streams and only the two top teams in each stream qualified to play in the final. Sonqoba were the winners of stream A and played against Reiger Park who were the winners of stream B. The Katlehong based school Sonqoba won their final game 1-0 against Reiger Park School. “They were crowned the Danone Ekurhuleni South District champions. Sonqoba would be pitted either Ekurhuleni North or Ekurhuleni East champions in the Danone Inter District competition. The final will be played at Somhlolo Soccer Grounds in Katlehong on May 29,” concluded Sibeko.

Sonqoba wins Danone cupHelp athlete realise

his dreamChris Jase (40) has been preparing for the 2014 Comrades Marathon for some while, but his efforts could soon fade away due to lack of sponsorship. The father of three boys who is based in Katlehong was upbeat that he will spring some surprises owing to his readiness for the race to take place on 1 June at KwaZulu-Natal. Speaking to tame TIMES, Jase said they were disappointed to learn that this year their athletic club would not sponsor their travelling and accommodation fee as usual. “However, that should not stand before my dream of winning or salvaging some pride in the Comrade Marathon. I am dedicated to run the 90 kilometres downhill race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. I am asking for help in raising R1400 for transportation and accommodation funds. Transport departs this Saturday from Johannesburg to Durban,” explained Jase.He promised to dish out a five star performance especially in the veterans category. Jase has partaken in the Two Ocean, City too City, Soweto and Sarens Edenvale Marathon. “I have won the Orlando Athletics Marathon 10 and 21 kilometres races four times and Vodacom Marathon 42 kilometres. I also won Protea Glen 10 Kilometres and Jack Kipson 42 kilometres in veteran’s category,” explained Jase.

People who would like to help Chris Jase could deposit any amount of cash at Standard Bank Account No 024716774 or phoned him at 071 5155420.
