MEC Maile opens a case against EFF leaderGauteng Human Settle-

ments MEC Lebogang Maile has opened a case

of crimen iniuria against Eco-nomic Freedom Fighter (EFF) leader Ms Mandisa Mashego and

her organization.Accompanied by his lawyer,

Mashudu Tshivhase, Maile opened a crimen injuria case against Mashego on Monday morning for publicly claiming,

without evidence, that the MEC and others benefited money re-portedly meant for Alexandra Re-newal Project (ARP).

Maile says “Her accusations were not only about hogging news headlines, but to cast aspersions on my character, integrity and standing in society.”

MEC Maile has decided to sue Ms Mandisa Mashego for defama-tion of character on the basis that her insinuations have compro-mised his standing and reputation in society.

“Her well calculated malicious and inflammatory allegations might fuel community anger and undermine the safety of myself and extended family” continued MEC Maile.

Maile is part of the African Na-tional Congress leadership collec-tive in Gauteng that has demon-strated ethical leadership and clean governance. “In all the portfolios I have been entrusted to lead in the provincial government we always

received clean audits, and put strong systems to fight corrup-tion, said MEC Maile.

Furthermore, MEC Maile said “taking legal action against Ms Mashego is no by any means a

tactic to suppress or intimidate her. But it is to use a competent court of law to clear my name from any allegations of wrong doing and expose her odious lies”.

Life of a Legend: Protea coin seals Nelson Mandela’s legacy

The South African Mint, a wholly owned subsidiary of

the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) yesterday unveiled the last edition in the ‘Life of a Legend – Nelson Mandela’ Protea collectable coin series. The 2019 range pays tribute to the Republic’s first demo-cratically elected president and global icon’s legacy.

The ‘Life of a Legend – Nelson Mandela’ theme was first introduced in 2013 representing a differ-ent chapter of Nelson Mandela’s life on each year’s coin issue. It has over the years chronicled Madiba’s childhood, education, arrival in Johannesburg, his fight for justice, struggle against apartheid’s stranglehold and ultimately his 27 year incarceration and eventual release from Robben Island.Reflecting on this final edition, Tumi Tsehlo, South African Mint’s

Managing Director says, “Mandela’s legacy, the extraordinary lessons he holds for the ages, and the reason why he stands head and shoulders above every leader of his generation, is that he showed the world that the entire edifice of apartheid could be dismantled with gratuitous generosity of heart.”

“It is befitting for a man of his stature that his legacy is preserved for posterity just like the gift of democracy. As we mark 25 years of our youthful existence, the South Africa Mint is proud to present these last coins in ‘Life of a Legend’ range.”The R2 (1oz) gold coin represents the year 1994, when Nelson Mandela was elected as the first black President of a free and democratic South Africa. The heart of the coin design features a silhou-etted profile of Nelson

Mandela surrounded by a decorative pattern. Within the sil- hou-

ette, a portrait of Nelson Man-dela is depicted with the Union Buildings featured in the background. The quotation, “Ours is a vision of a just and democratic South Africa in which all its people will enjoy a full and rewarding life” ap-pears along the outer edge of the coin. The design of the R5 (1/10oz) gold coin features an elderly Madiba and the quotation, “It is in your

hands to create a better world for all who live in it – Nelson Mandela”.The denomination, mass and metal value of the coin

complete the reverse design of the gold

coins. Both the R1 sterling-silver proof and R1 sterling-silver uncirculated coin depict a smiling Madiba holding

his grandchild. A paisley pattern,

reminiscent of the shirts he loved to wear,

was chosen for this design. The quotation, “The spirit of Ubuntu – that profound African sense that we are human only through the humanity of other human beings” is featured on the reverse, together with the denomination, mass and metal value of the coin.

The common obverse of both the gold and silver coins depict Nelson Man-dela surrounded by a wreath of king Proteas, the year ‘2019’ and the words ‘South Africa’.

The coins are available individually, and in a set of three comprising of the 1oz and 1/10oz gold coins and the sterling-silver proof coin. You can also pur-chase the special edition launch set which comes in custom packaging and comprises privy mark 1oz and privy mark 1/10oz gold coins, as well as a sterling silver proof coin, with a specially designed sterling-silver medallion that shows on the obverse the date of birth and death as well as the name of ‘Nelson Rolihlahla Man-dela’, together with values and personality traits associated with him. The reverse features an image of Nelson Mandela with more values, standards and ideals.

While Mandela served only one term as the country’s President, he remained active, seeking peace and social justice in South Africa and around the world even after death.

Gauteng police appeals to the public to assist in

finding the missing Police Constable Siphamandla Jobe. Police Spokesperson Colonel Lungelo said; “Jobe who is 26 years old, is not mentally stable, can be harmful and aggres-sive.”

“The victim come from

Kwa-Thema in East Rand and went missing on the 11 July. He was wearing a yellow t-shirt, police ceremonial jacket, tie and on barefoot. Public should not confront him as he is aggressive but contact the nearest police station or Crime Stop on 08600 101 11”, said Lungelo.

City of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba led by

Department of Public Safety MMC Michael Sun, and Acting Head of Public Safety David Tembe inspected parade of JMPD in Booysens Johannesburg.Mashaba said Johannes-burg Metropolitan Police Department were over 800 of 1 500 recruits that will soon graduate to become

fully qualified officers of the law.“We inspected both a parade at JMPD training academy in Booysens and road block conducted by recruits in South of Johan-nesburg. The trainees will graduate later this year and once on the ground, they will effectively double JMPD’s police force. This will ensure that residents of Johannesburg are safe and secure”, said Mashaba.

The City of Ekurhu-leni has advised residents to make

use of other service centres following the closure of the Bedfordview Licensing Centre due to a break-in.

“The Bedfordview Licens-ing Centre and rates hall are closed following the break-in that took place on the evening of Sunday, 14 July 2019,” said the City on Tuesday.

The City said preliminary investigations have re-vealed that intruders gained entry through the roof by cutting all security wirings. Two cash drop-off safes were damaged during the break-in.A large amount of money, eNatis computer box and a plasma TV screen were stolen. The eNatis server was also damaged during the burglary. All services that are offered at the

centre have been suspend-ed until the investigations and systems reboot are done. Currently, residents can only access the driv-er’s licence renewal drive-through.

The city has urged resi-dents who want to pay rates and other services to make use of centres such as Germiston, Edenvale and Kempton Park.

The South African unit of Ford Motor Co said on Wednes-

day it would hire an addi-tional 1,200 staff at one of its local assembly plants, an increase of over 25%, to add an extra shift and raise production. The additional shift, which will increase production to 720 vehicles per day, is the result of a R3 billion ($215 million) investment in South Africa that was announced in 2017, aimed at increasing annual pro-duction to 168,000 units. The US-owned company currently employs around 4,300 people in South Africa, at the plant in the Silverton suburb of South Africa’s administrative capital Pretoria, which will add the extra shift, and at

another site in the coastal city of Port Elizabeth.“The third shift will allow us to ramp up our production from the current 506 vehicles assembled per day to a peak of 720 units to satisfy the strong demand from customers in South Africa, as well as for our crucial exports to 148 markets around the world,” Ockert Berry, vice presi-dent of operations for Ford Middle East and Africa said in a statement.

Ford joins a number of other global carmakers in ramping up production on the continent, which promises rapid growth at the same time as trade tensions and upsets like the United Kingdom’s depar-ture from the European

Union threaten their operations elsewhere. The South African arm of Japanese carmaker Nissan also announced a similarly sized investment earlier this year, increasing pro-

duction at its local plant by 30,000 units, while BMW production chief Oliver Zipse said earlier this month that it had moved some production from the UK as a result of Brexit,

and that British plants no longer built South African components.Around a third of Ford’s local production is sold in South Africa and other sub-Saharan African countries, with the rest exported elsewhere. The additional shift will start in August and will be focused on the New Rang-er, Ranger Raptor and Everest models. The locally-built Ranger is ranked as the top-selling pick-up in Europe and leads light commercial vehicle exports. The plant in Port Elizabeth produces 120,000 diesel engines per year for the Silverton plant, as well as 130,000 units per year for export to North America, China and Europe and 280,000 component sets per year.

Lotus Park residents seized a young female robber

A Lotus Park resi-dent had just completed a prayer

when she was approached by a young female who requested food and then turned around grabbed the woman’s cash from the table and fled this after-noon. Alpha Alarms Response units were dispatched to the scene after a robbery and com-munity arrest was reported.

Upon arrival, Alpha Alarms members discov-ered that the quick acting community had pursued and apprehended the thief. The Mimosa Road com-

plainant said she had completed her prayer when the woman approached her and requested some food.

The resident was in the process of providing the woman with a meal when she received a phone call. The resident turned away and answered the call at which point the woman grabbed R500 in cash, which was left out in view. The female suspect jumped from the second floor of the flat and fled. The resident realised the theft and called out to neigh-bours for help.

The community rallied

together and pursued the suspect who was quickly apprehended. The suspect was adamant that she did not have the money. Intense questioning led her

to retrieve the cash from inside her pants. Isipingo SAPS responded to the scene and a case was opened. The suspect was handed

over to police.Well done to the community for acting swiftly and apprehending the suspect.Source: Arrive Alive

Dti welcomes Ford job creation efforts

Trade and Industry Minister Ebrahim Patel on Thursday

welcomed automaker Ford’s announcement that it will be creating 1 200 jobs at its plant in Pretoria.

Related: Ford Motor Co to hire additional 1200 staff

“The Minister has wel-comed the announcement by Ford South Africa that it will be creating 1 200 jobs at its Silverton Plant in Pretoria, Gauteng. The announcement is as a result of a R3 billion investment commitment by the com-pany earlier to expand capacity at the Silverton plant,” said the Department of Trade and Industry (dti). The American automaker in November 2017 an-nounced it would expand production capacity at its

South African plant in order to meet growing demand. The expansion of the plant, said Patel, means greater volumes of production and the addition of a new model to the range with the production of the Ranger Raptor model starting this year.In order to meet the grow-ing export demand, Ford SA will be adding a third shift, meaning they will be in operation 24 hours a day.

In a statement, the au-tomaker said the Silverton plant now has installed capacity to produce up to 168 000 Rangers and Everests per year – an increase of 44 000 vehicles prior to the expansion, and a substantial 58 000 more than the original Ranger

production capacity when this programme com-menced in 2011.Patel commended govern-ment’s Automotive Pro-duction and Development Programme (APDP). “The APDP and the recently announced Automotive Masterplan has a clear programme of doubling employment in the sector. This announcement by Ford SA is indication that these ambitions are in progress.”Patel noted that where industrial policy is correct-ly implemented in close collaboration with key stakeholders, it bears tangible results. He said jobs are going to have a positive impact on the lives of thousands of people. The dti in November 2018 unveiled details of the

approved extension of the APDP from 2021 to 2035, with amendments in support of the South African Automotive Masterplan (SAAM).The APDP was fully implemented by January 2013, with a view to steer the automotive industry towards producing about

1.2 million vehicles by 2020 with attendant expan-sion of the domestic supplier base. The pro-gramme is due to expire in 2020.Currently, over 400 vehi-cles are assembled at the Silverton plant on a daily basis.

The Reserve Bank has reduced the repo rate by 25 ba-

sis points to 6.5% in line with market expectation. “The MPC [Monetary Poli-cy Committee] unanimous-ly decided to reduce the re-purchase rate by 25 basis points to 6.5% per annum, with effect from 19 July 2019,” Reserve Bank Gov-ernor Lesetja. Kganyago announced on Thursday.

The MPC announced the decision following its meet-ing which got underway in Pretoria on Tuesday. Asked about whether the central bank had considered a 50 basis point rate cut at the meeting, the newly reap-pointed Governor said dis-cussions in the MPC were either to cut the repo rate by 25% basis points or to keep it unchanged at 6.75%.“There was no discussion on a 50 basis point rate

cut,” said Kganyago at the media briefing in Pretoria. The Governor’s comments follow on analysts’ expec-tations of a rate cut, where-by some expected a 25 ba-sis points reduction, while others anticipated a 50 ba-sis points rate cut.

Thursday’s rate cut deci-sion follows the November 2018 repo rate increase made by the central bank to stem inflation pressures. However, at its last meet-ing in May, the MPC said the implied path of policy rates generated by the Quarterly Projection Model was for one cut of 25 basis points to the repo rate by the end of the first quarter of 2020.On Thursday, the bank said monetary policy actions will continue to focus on anchoring inflation expec-tations near the mid-point of the inflation target range in the interest of balanced and sustainable growth. It

also highlighted that in a persistently uncertain envi-ronment, future policy de-cisions will continue to be highly data dependent, sen-sitive to the assessment of the balance of risks to the outlook, and will seek to look-through temporary price shocks.

“The implied path of poli-cy rates generated by the Quarterly Projection Model was for one cut of 25 basis points to the repo rate by the end of the fourth quarter of 2019. The endogenous interest rate path is built into the growth and infla-tion forecast.

“The implied path remains a broad policy guide which could change in either di-rection from meeting to meeting in response to new developments and chang-ing risks,” said Kganyago.

The bank cautioned that the escalation of trade tensions

could have further negative impacts, and that cyclical factors constrained recent Gross Domestic Product

(GDP) growth outcomes.

The MPC said it remains of the view that current chal-lenges facing the economy are primarily structural in nature and cannot be re-solved by monetary policy alone. “Implementation of prudent macroeconomic

policies, together with structural reforms that raise potential growth and lower the cost structure of the

economy, remains urgent,” it said.

The bank now expects GDP growth for 2019 to average 0.6% (down from 1.0% in May). The forecast for 2020 and 2021 is un-changed at 1.8% and 2.0% respectively.

SA trade mission identifies areas of collaboration in India

The South African Aero-space Maritime and De-fence Export Council

(SAAMDEC) has identified key areas of collaboration with the In-dian defence industry. Identified areas of collaboration include both small and medium calibre ammu-nition, unmanned aerial vehicles, robotics and artificial intelligence, among others.

SAAMDEC Chief Executive Of-ficer Sandile Ndlovu said local companies will be identified to pair with Indian companies. Formed by the Department of Trade and In-dustry (dti), SAAMDEC is tasked with facilitating exports for the de-fence and related industries sector, and is part of the department’s Out-ward Selling Mission to India. The trade mission seeks to increase the trade of South African value-added goods and services into the Indian market. “From the South African defence industry side we are going to identify local compa-nies that we will pair with Indian

companies under the areas that we have identified. These companies will then identify specific areas within these broad topics, work on them and report back to us as the export council.

“As far as opportunities are con-cerned, the Indian defence industry is diametrically opposed or oppo-site to our industry. They are work-ing at building their industry. In or-der to create opportunities for our industry back home we need to make use of the opportunities that are provided by India,” he said on Thursday.Ndlovu’s comments come as the dti leads a delegation to the south Asian country’s cities of New Del-

hi and Mumbai. He said interac-tions with the Indian industry have been fruitful, and that the export council had the benefit of visiting the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FIC-CI) and the Confederation of Indi-an Industry (CII) over the course of the trade mission.“Their objectives are the same and they both enjoy the support of their government. All in all, the New Delhi leg of this mission has been quite successful because we man-aged to agree with our Indian coun-terparts that regarding procure-ment, they will share current opportunities with ourselves, so that our members can participate where there is a requirement.”

“In some instances, they have al-ready informed us of what the In-dian army needs. It is up to our ex-porters to grab those opportunities,” said Ndlovu. The second leg of the Outward Selling Mission to India commenced in Mumbai on Thurs-day with the delegation’s pro-gramme comprising of a seminar attended by both the South African and Indian business communities as well as business to business net-working sessions, among others.A total of 27 local companies have participated in the trade mission that got underway on Monday. The companies’ participation the trade mission that will wrap up on Friday was through the dti’s Export Mar-keting and Investment Assistance Scheme (EMIA). The scheme de-velops export markets for South African products and services and recruits new foreign direct invest-ment into South Africa.

The Constitutional Court has rule that Public Protector, Advocate Busisiwe Mkh-

webane pay 15% of the South Afri-can Reserve Bank’s legal costs, in-cluding three counsel out of her own pocket. The Public Protector has in 2017 ordered that the special Investigation Unit to recover more than R1 billion on behalf of the central bank from Absa bank after the Reserve Bank in the apartheid years gave an illegal “lifeboat” to the bank’s predecessor, Bankorp. In April 2018, Mkhwebane had asked direct access to the Constitu-tional Court to set aside a High Court judgment, which found she was biased and did not fully under-stand her constitutional duty to be impartial and to perform her func-

tions without fear, favour or preju-dice57. The case before the court has its roots in Mkhwebane’s 2017 decision that the Special Investiga-tion Unit (SIU) must recoup R1.125-billion from Absa 47.In re-turn, the SAR asked that the court declares that the Public Protector abused her office in the Bankorp/Absa investigation.

Mkhwebane said that the judge-ment will be exemplary for other public protectors after her. “We have the utmost respect for the ju-diciary as one of the pillars on which our constitutional democra-cy rests. This will set a precedent for all other Public Protectors. It is not clear how we will be able to do our work without fear, favour or prejudice going forward.”

Gauteng News

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has warned motorists of

delays due to roadworks along Route R114 between Diepsloot and Muldersdrift, north of Johan-nesburg.

“The contractor has commenced work on two sections of the road and has introduced 24-hour stop and go controls for approximate-ly four kilometres,” the provin-cial department said on Friday in a statement.

The stop and go controls – last-ing +/-20 minutes – can be ex-pected just before Cedar Road (D1027) and after Malibongwe Road, near Nooigedacht Primary School.

Roadworks will take place on these sections until 30 November 2019. Motorists have been ad-vised to make use of alternative routes via the N14 (P158/2) or Malibongwe Drive.

The department has expressed re-gret for the inconvenience and has thanked road users for their understanding.

Deadline looms for 2020 online applications

Three burnt to death in their sleep

Deadline is looming for Gauteng Department of

Education’s 2020 online application. The admission period ran from 20 May 2019 until 22 July 2019, where the application period will close at mid-night.Parents who have not yet applied have been urged by the department to apply before the admission period closes.Applications can be made by logging on to www.gdeadmissions.gov.za or by visiting the nearest School, District or Head Office for assistance.

MEC for the department Panyaza Lesufi said that; “As a Province we are pleased that the parent population and stakehold-ers in Gauteng have em-braced the use of the Online Application. This

ground breaking Online Application has provided the department with cred-ible and reliable informa-tion. We will therefore continue to enhance this system and link it to other existing government systems, to further

strengthen the credibility of the information at-tained.”The Placement Period for Admission 2020 will commence on 30 August 2019 and close on 31 October 2019. It must be noted that placement offers

will NOT be sent to ALL parents on the same day, as the Department will be processing offers system-atically daily in line with the order of application options outlined in the Admissions Regulations. Placement offers will be sent to parents until on 31 October 2019. Parents are therefore urged to remain calm if they do not receive offers immediately after the commencement of the placement period. Subse-quently, they may make a follow up after 31 October 2019, only if they did not receive any offers of placement.

A 61-year-old wom-an and her two granddaughters,

aged 5 and 8 years respec-tively were found dead at their home at Wushe Street in Slovo Park on Monday morning. It is alleged that the de-ceased were sleeping in

their house when it burnt to ashes. All the deceased bodies were burnt beyond recognition. The Acting Cluster Commander, Brigadier Mandlakhe Twala condemns the attacks against women and children and promised the community in arresting the suspects. “With your

assistance we will arrest the suspect/s soon”. He said.

“We are investigating three counts of murder and arson as we suspect foul play. Motive for their killing is yet to be established and no arrests have been made yet,” he added.

The Executive Mayor of the City of Joburg, Cllr Her-

man Mashaba, has on

Monday staged a sit-in at Eskom offices in Megawatt Park following his engage-ment with residents who

have been plunged into darkness after Eskom cut off power to various parts of the township. The

Mayor has demanded to see senior Eskom officials at Eskom Headquarters to shine a spotlight on the plight of residents and demand, on their behalf, an immediate resolution to the crisis brought upon them by Eskom’s carelessness.Residents have alleged that they have been without electricity, for up to two weeks, after Eskom cut off power to their homes. However, through corre-spondence with the Office of the Executive Mayor,

the families have been able to prove that their Eskom accounts are fully paid up.Despite this, these innocent families now live in dark-ness because the power utility has lumped them together with residents who have not paid their Eskom accounts, some for a number of years. The Mayor has insisted on not leaving the premises until Eskom officials agree to urgently meet with him on the matter.

Netball Proteas on the rim of World cup semi-final

South Africa started their first game of the Vitality Netball

World Cup preliminary stage two groups against Scotland where they wanted to continue their perfect winning record in this tournament. The SPAR Proteas beat Scotland 66-38 on Monday evening at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool to move closer to a spot in the semi-finals.SPAR Proteas Coach Norma Plummer made a number of changes to the team that upset Jamaica on Sunday. South Africa drew first blood by scoring two quick goals however Scotland recovered quickly

and claimed the lead which they retained for the better part of the first quarter. The SPAR Proteas took the game to Scotland and managed to regain their lead taking the game 14 -10 by the end of the first quarter. The beginning of the second quarter was no different as South Africa continued to apply pres-sure and exert their author-ity on the Scottish. Substi-tute Khanyisa Chawane marshalled and controlled the middle of the court very well, she came off the bench at the start of the quarter and settled in very comfortably in that centre

position.Handling errors became a thing for Scotland as they gave away possession cheaply and the SPAR Proteas made sure that they get punished for such. South Africa went into the half time leading 32 -20. Scotland seemed to be

stuck at the 10 point per quarter mark as they managed to only score 10 goals still as per the first quarter.

South Africa seemed to be running away with this game halfway through the third quarter. At the end of the quarter South Africa

were leading 49 – 32. They will take on fellow African counterparts in Uganda on Wednesday 17th July 2019 at 20:00 South African Time. If South Africa win their game against sixth world ranked Uganda they will earn themselves a semi-final spot.

“The SPAR Proteas took the game to Scotland and managed to regain their lead taking the game 14 -10 by the end of the first quarter.”
