TIRUVANNAMALAI DISTRICT DEEPAM FESTIVAL – 2011
Medical booths :
In order to treat the sudden ailments of the devotees, 15 medical
booths are organized in Tiruvannamalai. In each booth, there will be 30
doctor and 30/30 medical attendants / nurses for attending to the needs of
the patients. Out of these 15 medical booths, 3 are mobile medical booths.
The places, wherein the medical booths are situated, are tabulated as

Karthikai Deepam: Karthikai Deepam falls in the Tamil month of Karthikai (Scorpio), a festival that is marked by lighting of Bharani (an earthen receptacle made for lighting) deepam and Maha deepam. .
Deepam festival fall in the Tamil month of Karthikai when the star Krithika ascends and this usually occurs on a full moon day. This year the full moon day falls on 09.12.2011.
Karthikai Deepam festival in Arulmighu Arunachaleswarar temple
Tiruvannamalai will commence this year on 26.11.2011 (Saturday ) and conclude on 12.12.2011 (Monday). The Karthigai Maha Deepam falls on 08.12.2011 (Thursday).
Maha Deepam is preceeded by the Bharani Deepam i.e. a celebration when a lamp is lit in the main shrine of the temple following a fire sacrifice before the shrine of Surya. A small bowl of ghee lighted by this fire is used to light five other lamps representing the five elemental of Shiva. During Maha Deepam four of the five decorated Panchamurthees are brought out from the main shrine of the temple and housed in Vimanams in the 3rd Prakaram of the temple, facing the flag staff and the Annamalai Hill. The last to arrive is Lord Arthanereeswarar who comes out of the second Prakaram, dancing with his consort. The crowd waits to catch a glimpse of the Deepam which is then brought out of the nine shrine towards the Utsava Annamalaiyar. It is believed Lord Annamalaiyar is to be worshipped only, as the beacon until the next morning when the shrine is reopened.
Every year this festival attracts a few lakhs of devotees. Last year about 20 lakhs devotees visited this shrine and had a glimpse of this deepam. This year about 20 – 22 lakhs of devotees are expected to participate. This year pournami falls on the next day of Deepam i.e. 09.12.2011. This necessities a careful and elaborate bandobust arrangements extending upto mobilising 10,000 police personnel.
