Community Health Aide Trainer Duties July 25, 2005-March 10, 2008; March 10,2009 – January 3, 2011:
The Community HAT works together with other trainers to instruct Community Health Aides in didactic and clinical training through four sessions total. Once all four sessions are complete and the health aide graduate is finished with the field component of requirements the health aide trainer goes to the village where the health aide works(preferably) to precept that health aide to credential him or her under the Community Health Aide Program guidelines. State certification is a separate process by which the health aide applies for certification and must have proof of all the above.
Medical Staff Duties: Once a week or more depending on outpatient clinic needs and availability of the Health
Aide Trainer outside of sessions the advanced practice nurse is utilized for direct patient care including obtaining a history, performing appropriate exam(s) including labs and radiology, interpreting necessary labs and radiological studies in consultation with the radiologist. The advanced practice nurse diagnoses and offers appropriate patient based treatment including referrals to physical therapy, psychological therapy, dietary or diabetic treatment programs, smoking cessation programs, and /or other specialty areas.
Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) Coordinator Duties (March 2008-March 2009):
After attending training for SART the provider uses that training to guide decision making for a medical forensic exam for both victim and suspect. Within this examination if other trauma is recognized that needs immediate attention the forensic exam is halted until the victim or suspect is stable enough to go through the rest of the exam. Ongoing education for nurses and medical staff is provided through orientation and in-servicing throughout the year.
Community education is also imperative for decreasing the incidence of sexual assault in the Bering Strait Region. The SART Coordinator travels to local villages periodically to engage those communities in dialog regarding sexual assault and domestic violence. Support groups for survivors of sexual assault are also a part of the coordinator’s duties. Establishing support groups for both genders is a long-term goal for the communities the coordinator serves.
Medical Staff Duties: Twice a week the SART Coordinator is utilized in the outpatient clinic to work
with patients with acute and chronic problems. Utilizing training from Family Nurse Practitioner background works with the patient to assess through history and exam techniques to come up with a plan that is conducive to patient adherence.
Should a victim of sexual assault present to the clinic during the SART Coordinator’sregular work hours; then the Coordinator responds to the needs of that patient as apriority.
