SUCCESSFUL CENTENARY SEMINAR

Established in 1969, Karate Club HKUSU is one of HKU’s clubs and societies with the longest history. In

addition to the delightful celebration of HKU’s 100th

anniversary, the club was determined to promote the

great art of karate to more students through this invaluable seminar, and enhance the skills of current

HKU team members and learners.

About 200 karate students, mainly from HKU and some from the general public, have had widened their

horizons and reached a new level of martial arts by participating in the seminar.

1. Celebration of HKU 100th

Anniversary

Over the past century, HKU has committed itself to creating knowledge, providing education, and

serving society. Karate Club has celebrated the core values of its University and continued to serve by

holding the memorable Centenary Goju-Ryu Karate Seminar.

2. Inheritance of Goju-Ryu Karate

It has been our honor to have President and Shihan Futawatari of Goshin Kai from Japan to come to

HKU again, to teach us the great art of Karate, after our successful 2001 Karate Seminar.

3. Exchange of Goju-Ryu Karate

The seminar has provided a fruitful platform for all club members, team members, HKU staff and

students, other karate lovers, to strengthen their skills and enrich their knowledge through the martial

arts exchange.

4. Promotion of Goju-Ryu Karate

Karate is not simply physical exercises; it is an art that should be conserved and revitalized. Entering its

43rd

year, Karate Club HKUSU not only vows to train more martial arts elites, but endeavors to promote

the philosophy and spirit of Karate to more people. The club has achieved its goal in this seminar.

5. Training of HKU Team Members

The HKU Karate Team has won numerous awards in both local and international competitions. The

team is renowned for its excellence in the field, and more importantly the spirit of its members to excel.

The seminar was a good training opportunity for team members, as the Futawatari Shihans taught skills

highlighted in recent kumite (自由組手) competitions of the world karate championship, and kata (型) ,

which can be thought as a sequence of specific karate movements that address various types of attack and

defense under ideal circumstances.

In the seminar, the Futawatari Shihans have taught about 200 karate students, mainly from the

University of Hong Kong, world class kumite and kata techniques of Goju-ryu.

The Seminar started with a presentation of souvenirs to

the Futawatari Shihans by Mr. Simon Lo, Assistant

Director of IHP and our Coach Mr. Siegel Cheung.

Then all students were taken through a warm up and a good stretch which prepared us for the

session ahead.

Following warm up, Shihan Futawatari started on slow

hand & leg techniques, bunkai (分解 application of

fighting techniques) of basic kata Geikisai Dai Ichi (擊

碎一), numbering each move. After practising slowly

for several times, Shinhan sped up the tempo while

calling out the numbers of the moves. Quick and swift

techniques required us to work our minds and fully

concentrate. Everyone had a good sweat and a short

break was arranged for water and rest.

Then another bunkai of kata, Sanchin (三戰) , was taught.

We all paired up and started working on reaction work after

practice following Shihan several times. As one side came

in with a set of attacks, the other side react with a set of

blocks and counter-attacks. Shihan Futawatari led us

through the patterns and let us try out the whole set of

interactive movements with our partners.

Besides the application of kumite fighting techniques from Gekisai Dai Ichi & Sanchin, Shihan

Futawari had taught us how to master the intricacies of advanced techniques from kata Saifa (碎

破) , kata Seipai (十八手) and kata Suparinpei (一百零八手).

Several students were chosen to perform the kata and Shihan Futawari reminded us of every

important detail afterwards. In the six hours of invaluable teaching, Shihan Futawari demonstrated

the most genuine Goju-Ryu techniques to us.

All karate students have gained a lot from the seminar and we are encouraged to continue practise

what we have learnt from Shihan Futawari to enhance our own skills. The seminar has greatly

helped us to understand the application of fighting spirit and movements, and has further increased

participants’ interest in and love for karate.

We all took photos with Shihan Futawari at the end and sincerely hope they would visit HKU

again in the coming year. The seminar has been a remarkable experience for all karate students.
