the edges of the cup. The disciple in surprise exclaimed“Stop!” The master then said that learning is likedrinking water from a cup, you will only drink as longas you’re thirsty. The moment the cup overflows; allthat water like knowledge is wasted.

The above story outlines the philosophical backgroundof education and now it’s important to consider howthe role of teachers and students in moderneducational institutions has evolved. As the numberof students increased, there was a dire need forsystematic structures which would guarantee thetransfer of knowledge of the teacher to every student. The idea of classrooms, blackboards and examinationswere part of the systematic structure as educationbecame available to every class in the society. As timepassed by, industrial revolution created specializedjobs for qualified individuals hence educationinstitution filled the void by providing students withdegrees which would become as a validation of theirqualification in a respective field. Between all this, ‘theurge to learn’, which the master in the story so ferventlyexemplified was somehow lost. There was a time whena person with knowledge was called educated andnow that same person would be asked to show hisdegree to validate his knowledge.

The modern educational mechanism has separatededucation and knowledge in the two distinctphenomenons. The fact that this is the case doesn’tmean that it should be the case or that it shouldperpetuate in the same manner for generations tocome. To elucidate the argument let us look at somemodern day examples, Bill Gates and Mark Zukenbergwere both dropouts i.e. they left their universitieswithout completing their degree. In essence theyshould be called uneducated under the governingprinciple, despite being successful in their life. Menwith knowledge, historically, have always been reveredand considered educated; then in spite of precedent, what has changed? To be practical, there was a genuineneed for a systematic and formal structure in educationinstitutions. As the fields of studies increased, therewas growing scope for

The need of the hour gravely relies on the spiritof an individual to exhibit tolerance, patience anddetermination in the face of existential crisis. Thisspirit is illuminated by education which refines aperson’s demeanor and forces his/her senses toresort to anything but violence. This is what MalalaYousaf Zai meant when she said I will tell themthey were wrong even if they come to kill meagain. It is the power of education which confirmspeople from different social background to sitpeacefully and discuss the matter.

The role of education historically has always beeninteresting. It was considered a luxury affordableto the elites of a society. Moreover, the curriculumbeing taught differed significantly from our currenteducation institutions. This was probably becauseof the teachers or mentors who drew their lesson, not from text books but from their wisdom, experience and practical endeavors. For instance, the teacher of Alexander the great, Aristotle wasa philosopher amongst other things. His disciplesor students would follow him around as he wouldimpart his knowledge on various subjects like arts, history and philosophy whilst strolling the streetsof the Macedonian city Stigunus. Another exampleof such nature is of Rumi, the spiritual philosopher, and who also used the same technique ofcombining practical and theoretical lessons inhis teaching.

The essence of teaching solely depends on theurge to learn. The famous story of a master anddisciple outlines the responsibility of a teachertowards his student and vice versa. The storybegins with the disciple’s impatience over themethod of the master’s teaching. The disciplewanted to learn all his lessons quickly while themaster was taking a lot of time. Amidst theincessant nagging of the disciple, the mastersuddenly replied “are you thirsty?” The disciplealthough confused said “yes”. The master pouredthe water in the cup but left more than half of thecup empty. The disciple obviously drank all of itand asked for more. The master this time filled thewhole cup till the water started dribbling outside

improvement. Putting aside the conventional fieldsof education, the emerging subjects includednatural sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, botany etc) social sciences (economics, management, marketing etc). The problem arosewhen the formal structure of education came intoconflict with the urge to learn and innovation ofstudents. This has been the primary reason whystudents have been disenchanted with educationinstitutions. They have been restricted totheoretical material with no experience of practicallife and the problem it brings.

School is considered a source of socializationsecondary to family. The society relies heavily onthe education institutions to provide a solidlearning in moral ethics and to make the younggeneration upright members of the society. However, schools have been plagued with casesof gun violence and harassment, sexual orotherwise. The purpose of education revolvesaround the fundamental notion of building a valuesystem of individuals as they pass throughdifferent stages of life as a child, adolescent andadult. The value system constitutes the essenceof society. It teaches children to be tolerant ifsomeone invades their personal space, it teachesthem to resort to politeness when attackedwith harshness.

The million dollar question is, can a knowledgeableperson with no formally recognized degree beregarded as an educated person? If the meaningof education relies on the validation of a piece ofpaper then the person is uneducated but if titleof ‘educated’ is given to anyone with adequateknowledge than even a watchman who readspoetry can be considered educated. Most peoplecreate a direct relationship between educationand success. It is true to an extent that formalizededucation makes it easier to be part of the affluentclass, if that is how you measure success. But eitherway the concept of education and knowledge areflames of the same candle hence you can’t be onewithout the other.

I am purposeless with a purpose, aimless withan aimI do not give things worth when they are worth itI fear insanity yet sanity seems far to plain. Is this a gift or something that I have beencursed withStaring into the abyss trying to give meaningto the nameShatter into nothingness when confusion is allI can claim.I feel weak but I put on strength as I feign.Questioning myself at every turn, my moralityappears stain.Confined to nothing so thoughts of infinity areall I retain.

Study the greats yet immature and foolishI remain.Confident in his beliefs yet he does not knowhow to speak.he tries and tries to explain but he fails to makethe masses perceive If you sneak into the depthof his mind the maybe you would seeThe little boy confined in chains as he losestears to weepHe looks you dead in the eyes as he barelybreaths.

Then with a roar he screams "I was just tryingto be me"

That is when you wake up as man captured byreality.Imagine meeting this man as you shake hishand and feel flesh. You can feel him but do you feel how hisemotions are on the verge of death Heartimpaled by a life which has been termed asnothing more than a test.Every night he closes his eyes and thinks of hecan bring this to a rest His only mistake wasthat he tried to understand those who exist. But little did the foolish boy know.

That their existence was nothing more thana myth,Their existence was nothing more than a myth.

system established within his or her familyenvironment. Developing a moral compasslater in life is not easy. Ensuring ethical fitnessin a proactive manner will result in preventive, rather than corrective, ethical management.

At a minimum, a code of conduct must be inplace, specific to the ethical issues confrontedin the service. Research suggests that unlessethical behavior is rewarded and unethicalbehavior punished, written codes of conductare unlikely to be effective.

The officials are morally bound to tell the truth,to keep promises, to respect the person andthe property of others, and to abide by therequirements of the law.

Conflict of interest:This relates to officials, because it deals with the conflict betweenadvancing the public interest, which a publicofficial is charged to do, and advancing one’sself-interest. The duty here is to ensure thatthe public interest comes first, and that onedoes not advance his own personal interest atthe expense of the public.

Service orientation and procedural fairness:The moral obligation of public servants is tofollow established procedures, and not to usetheir power to circumvent those proceduresfor their own convenience or benefit. Powermust be used fairly and for the benefit ofthe public.

Whatever the reasons or excusesfor the failures by community officials orleaders, it is hoped that the resources areutilized in the best public interest judiciouslyand efficiently. It must be emphasized the finedifference between efficient and effective.

Ethics and morality are important for groupsand organizations. They are also important forpeople elected to serve honorary or workingin welfare organizations. There are differentlevels of morality or ethics. These levels are:basic honesty and conformity to law; conflictsof interest; service orientation and proceduralfairness; the ethic of democratic responsibility;the ethic of public policy determination; andthe ethic of compromise and social integration.

Ethics is knowing the difference between whatyou have a right to do and what is right todo. The first step in the evolution of ethics is asense of solidarity with other human beings. All divine revelations, prophets and saintspropagated the message to distinguish rightfrom wrong. They acted as role models for themankind and practiced strict moral code ofbehavior and these are our guiding principlesfor our moral conduct. These applies to allpersons, groups and professions.

Officials are given the trust by the membersof the community organizations, welfare trustsand public organizations to develop and carryout policies that are in the people’s bestinterest. Living up to this trust has a significantimpact on overall goodand officials have amoral duty to act in a trustworthy manner.

Much of a person’s ethical standards areformed through upbringing and the value
