LEADING OFF...• The Red Raiders will look to defend Rocky Johnson Field once again this weekend as Texas Tech is 9-3 at home this season and 74-23 all-time under fourth-year head coach Shanon Hays. Tech enters the series rid-ing a five-game winning streak at home. • The series begins a six-game homestand for the Red Raiders, who spent the past three weekends on the road where Texas Tech went 8-6 during that stretch. • The series is the first of three Big 12 home series for Texas Tech this season as the Red Raiders will also host No. 1 Oklahoma on April 12-14 and No. 8 Texas on April 26-28.• Texas Tech is coming off a series lost at Oklahoma State last weekend where the Red Raiders run-ruled the Cowgirls, 10-0, in the opener before suffering 2-1 and 4-1 losses to close the weekend.• Texas Tech’s 10-inning loss to Oklahoma State in the second game of the series marked the most innings in a game during the Shanon Hays era and the most since the Red Raiders defeated Iowa State, 4-3, on April 27, 2008, in Lubbock.• The series loss dropped Texas Tech eight spots in this week’s ratings percentage index (RPI) poll that is released every Monday afternoon. The Red Raiders had previously debuted at No. 48 a week ago in the poll that is widely used to determine NCAA postseason selections.• The Kansas series will be a battle of two of the top offenses in the country as the Jayhawks enter this week-end with the nation’s top batting average with a .364 mark. Texas Tech is currently ranked 21st nationally with a .323 average. • The Red Raiders are also among the top-20 teams nationally in both scoring and doubles per game as Texas Tech ranks 12th and 17th in the two categories. Tech is also 22nd in slugging percentage and 31st in home runs per game. • Mikey Kenney heads into the Kansas series having reached base in each of the last 27 games, the second-longest streak for a Red Raider this season after Shelby Johnson started off the year by reaching in the first 30 games. It matches the longest such streak in Kenney’s career as she also reached in 27-straight games during her 2010 freshman season.• Kenney enters the weekend needing just three more walks to match the Texas Tech single-season record of 40 that was set in 2004 by Erica Sigala. Kenney, who ranks 13th nationally in the category, is already the all-time career leader with 106 walks.• Kenney leads the Red Raiders with a .553 on-base percentage that is currently on pace to be the highest in school history. Only Kim Martinez has recorded an on-base percentage over .500 in school history as she recorded a .527 clip in 1997 (includes only players with 75 or more at-bats). Kenney currently ranks 16th nationally in on-base percentage and then 31st in home runs with 11 on the year. • With her home run in the series opener at Oklahoma State last weekend, Adriana Perez now has 13 long balls this season which currently ranks seventh nationally. Perez is just three home runs shy of matching the Texas Tech single-season record of 16 that was set by Sandy James in 2011.• Sandy James remains the Big 12 Conference leader in doubles this week as the senior has totaled 14 al-ready this year, three more than Tiffany Mikkelson of Oklahoma State and Maggie Hull of Kansas. James had recorded nine doubles in both of her first two seasons in a Tech uniform, giving her 32 now for her career which ranks sixth in school history.• Cara Custer has the second-lowest ERA in conference games entering this weekend as she surrendered just two earned runs over 14.2 innings last weekend at Oklahoma State for a 0.95 ERA. Texas’ Blaire Luna leads the league with a 0.48 ERA that includes just two earned runs over 29.0 innings. • Katelyn Williams is among the top 10 hitters in the Big 12 currently as she has a team-high .387 batting average entering this weekend. Williams has also added career highs with seven home runs and 32 RBI so far this season as well.

TEXAS TECH IN BIG 12 HOME OPENERS The Red Raiders opened their home Big 12 schedule with a three-game of Iowa State a year ago to improve to 12-24 all-time since joining the conference in 1996. It was only the second time in school history where Texas Tech had swept an opponent during a Big 12 home opener as the Red Raiders also did so against Mis-souri in an April 10, 1999 doubleheader.

INSIDE THE KANSAS SERIESTexas Tech will look to continue its recent success over Kansas this weekend as the Red Raiders are 5-2 against the Jayhawks under head coach Shanon Hays. Despite wins in six of the past eight games, Kansas still leads the all-time series between the two schools thanks to a 26-15 advantage that includes a 12-7 record when playing in Lubbock. The two teams have split their last two series at Rocky Johnson Field in 2009 and 2011 as the Red Raiders have not won a series against the Jayhawks at home since 2001. Prior to the 2012 season, all conference series were just two games. Texas Tech vs. Kansas under Shanon Hays Date Result Location 4-24-10 W, 4-2 Lawrence 4-25-10 W, 4-1 Lawrence 5-15-10 W, 5-3 Oklahoma City 4-13-11 L, 5-9 Lubbock 4-13-11 W, 10-0 (5) Lubbock 4-28-12 W, 4-1 Lawrence 4-28-12 L, 4-5 Lawrence

ON DECKThe Red Raiders will remain at Rocky Johnson Field next weekend as No. 1 Oklahoma will make the trip to Lubbock for a three-game series on April 12-14. Should the Sooners remain the top-ranked team in next week’s top-25 poll, it will mark the first time Texas Tech has ever hosted the No. 1 team in the country.

USA TODAY/NFCA TOP 25 POLL

ESPN/USA SOFTBALL TOP 25 POLL

TEXAS TECH SENIORS TAKE OVER TOP THREE SPOTS ON CAREER HOME RUN CHARTWith Adriana Perez’ three-run home run in the series opener at Oklahoma State last weekend, Texas Tech’s three seniors of Perez, Mikey Kenney and Sandy James now rank as the top-three home run hitters in school history. Kenney leads the group with 43 career home runs followed by James with 34 and Perez with 27. Perez passed Kim Martinez (1997, 1999) for third all-time as she hit a three-run homer in the third inning against Oklahoma State. Kenney also hit two solo shots in the series opener against the Cowgirls, marking her third multiple home run game this season and the fourth of her career.

HAYS NEARING WIN NO. 150 AT TEXAS TECHA series win over the Jayhawks would not only bring Texas Tech back to .500 in Big 12 play but it would also guarantee head coach Shanon Hays his 150th career victory with the Red Raiders. Hays, who became the program’s all-time winningest coach earlier this season, is currently an impressive 148-65 (.694 winning percentage) during his three-plus seasons in the Tech dugout.

TEXAS TECH AMONG THE TOP OFFENSES IN THE COUNTRY ... AGAINOne staple for Texas Tech under Shanon Hays has been boasting one of the top offenses in the nation the past two seasons. Even with a reworked lineup that normally consists of three or four freshmen, the Red Raiders enter this week ranked 12th nationally in scoring and among the top 30 for batting average (21st), doubles per game (17th) and slugging percentage (22nd). Tech is also ranked 31st for home runs per game as well. The Red Raiders ranked among the national leaders in several offensive categories in 2012, a year after ranking fourth in both scoring and batting average.

RED RAIDERS LOOK TO REPEAT STRONG PERFORMANCE IN BIG 12 PLAY FROM A YEAR AGOTexas Tech will be looking to repeat its strong performance from last year in Big 12 play as the Red Raiders finished fifth in the conference standings with a 13-10 record. It was Tech’s first winning conference record since 2001 when the Red Raiders finished 10-8 and advanced to the second NCAA Regional in school history. Texas Tech has never recorded a winning Big 12 record in back-to-back seasons since softball returned as an NCAA sport in 1996.

KENNEY NOTCHES 200TH CAREER HITMikey Kenney recorded yet another career milestone at the Rebel Classic as the senior notched her 200th career hit against Boise State. She is one of just three players in school history to reach 200 hits for a career, joining Sandy Butler and Ashley Parker. Butler connected on a school-record 256 career hits from 1998-2001 while Parker finished right at 200 hits during her four seasons from 2004-07. Kenney, who has 44 hits already this year, passed Parker for second all-time last weekend as her two home runs in the series opener against Oklahoma State moved her to 202 for her career. The Arvada, Colo. native is already the Texas Tech all-time leader in runs scored, home runs and walks and ranks among the top 10 in every career offensive category.

PEREZ RANKS AMONG TOP HOME RUN HITTERS IN THE COUNTRYAdriana Perez snapped a 13-game homerless streak last weekend at Oklahoma State as she crushed her 13th of the season with a three-run shot in the series opener. Perez currently ranks seventh nationally with 13 long balls this year, which is three off the Texas Tech single-season school record set by Sandy James in 2011. The Lancaster, Calif. native trails Oklahoma’s Lauren Chamberlain as the sophomore has belted 16 home runs already this year. Perez enters this weekend hitting .313 on the year with a team-high 43 RBI that leads the Big 12 Conference. The single-season mark for RBI belongs to Kim Martinez, who drove in 70 runners in 1997. Perez has hit 28 home runs in just over a season at Tech, moving her into sole possession for third all-time after passing Kim Martinez (1997, 1999).

RED RAIDERS JUST TWO WINS SHY OF FOURTH-STRAIGHT WINNING SEASONTexas Tech can guarantee its fourth-straight winning season this weekend with a series win over Kansas. The Red Raiders, who are 27-14 entering the series, have won at least 30 games in each of Shanon Hays’ three seasons, including 40-plus wins in both 2011 and 2012. Prior to Hays’ arrival, Tech had not recorded a winning season since 2001 when the Red Raiders went 37-24 en route to advancing to the NCAA Tucson Regional. It was one of just four winning seasons for Tech until 2010 when Hays led the Red Raiders to a 38-18 record and a trip to the NCAA Stanford Regional.

WILLIAMS SOLIDIFIES MIDDLE OF TEXAS TECH LINEUPKatelyn Williams’ sophomore season has been nothing but success so far as she leads Texas Tech with a .387 batting average to go along with seven home runs and 32 RBI. Williams, who totaled just one home run and 10 RBI during her freshman season, has recorded a team-high 14 multiple-hit games this year and seven multiple-RBI performances as well. She is currently among the Big 12 leaders in batting average, hits, doubles, total bases and slugging percentage.

JOHNSON CONTINUES TO REACH BASE IN THE NO. 2 HOLE Through 41 games this season, Shelby Johnson has done exactly what Shanon Hays envisioned when he recruited the junior college transfer - reach base. The Jefferson, Ga. native opened the year reaching base in the first 30 games, the longest streak to start a season since Emily Bledsoe reached in the first 34 games of the 2011 campaign. Johnson has reached in 37 of 41 games this year as she is third on the team with a .461 on-base percentage that only trails Mikey Kenney’s .553 average and Sandy James’ .474 percentage. The junior matched the Texas Tech single-game record for hits with her 5-for-5 performance against IPFW on March 9 where she also drove in a season-high six RBI. Johnson matched the school record that was set by Stephanie Drewry on Feb. 27, 2009, against South Florida. She currently ranks among the Big 12 leaders in hits, runs scored, walks, and stolen bases.

WEEK 9: vs. KANSAS • GAMES 42-44

RED RAIDERS BEGIN TO FIND POWER TO CLOSE HOMESTANDTexas Tech belted 12 home runs during the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic and then three more in a doubleheader against Bryant and Fairfield. The Red Raiders are more than half way to their school-record to-tal from the 2012 season as Tech enters the Oklahoma State series with 39 home runs this year. Tech snapped the single-season record for the second-straight season a year ago as the Red Raiders connected on 66 home runs. After starting the season with impressive power numbers, Tech will have to get back on pace in order to break the record once again as the 2012 club had 52 home runs through 38 games a year ago.

HAYS PICKS UP CAREER WIN NO. 250 AGAINST IPFWTexas Tech head coach Shanon Hays earned his 250th career victory as a collegiate softball coach on March 9 when the Red Raiders rolled past IPFW, 12-4, in six innings. Hays already became the winningest coach in Texas Tech history already this year with a season-opening win over Central Florida. The fourth-year skipper is now 260-76 in six seasons as a collegiate coach and 146-60 while at Texas Tech.

TEXAS TECH FINDS SUCCESS IN OPENING INNINGOne mantra for Shanon Hays has to always jump on opponents early. The Red Raiders have followed through with that this year as Tech is outscoring its opponents, 48-11, in the first inning alone. Tech has scored in the opening inning 20 times already this year, compiling a 15-5 record during those games alone. The Red Raiders are also 20-6 when scoring before their opponent this year and an impressive 114-20 when doing so under fourth-year head coach Shanon Hays.

JAMES BECOMES TEXAS TECH ALL-TIME RBI LEADERSandy James snapped the Texas Tech career RBI record at the Troy Cox Classic as the senior drove in nine runs on the weekend. She now has 142 RBI for her career, which passes the previous mark of 114 set by both Paula Workman (1997-2000) and former teammate Emily Bledsoe (2009-12). The Kilgore, Texas native broke the record with a second-inning grand slam against UMKC on Friday that was part of a five-RBI performance. She also added a three-run double the following day against the Kangaroos. James also holds a narrow lead on current teammate Mikey Kenney, who enters this weekend with 135 career RBI which ranks second all-time in school history.

HAYS BECOMES ALL-TIME WINNINGEST COACH ON OPENING WEEKENDShanon Hays became the winningest coach in Texas Tech history on opening weekend when the Red Raid-ers topped Central Florida, 12-4, for Hays’ 122nd victory. The win helped Hays pass Renee Luers-Gillespie, UCF’s current head coach who also led Tech to a 121-133-1 record in just over four seasons from 1996 to several weeks into the 2000 season. Hays is now 147-67 during his three-plus seasons in the Tech dugout.

ELKINS HAS SUCCESSFUL START TO COLLEGIATE CAREERAs a collegiate athlete for just over a month, Lexie Elkins probably couldn’t imagine such a successful open-ing weekend. The 17-year-old freshman went 4-for-8 at the plate with a pair of doubles and two RBI while making three starts behind the plate at the Sportco Kick-Off Classic. She became the first freshman to earn the opening-day start at catcher since Holley Gentsch in 2009. Gentsch went on to Tech’s primary catcher behind the plate during her four-year career before becoming Tech’s graduate student manager this season.

RED RAIDERS RECEIVE VOTES IN BOTH PRESEASON POLLSFor the third-straight season, Texas Tech will start the season receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and the ESPN/USA Softball preseason polls. The Red Raiders picked up 12 points in both polls to fall just outside of the top 25. One of five Big 12 schools appearing in either poll, Tech will face a total of eight teams this season that are ranked or receiving votes in the preseason rankings.

HEART OF THE LINEUP RETURNS FOR 2013 SEASONDespite the graduation of a school record eight seniors from a year ago, the Red Raiders still return the heart of their 2012 lineup in seniors Sandy James, Mikey Kenney and Adriana Perez. The trio led Texas Tech in batting average, home runs and RBI a year ago to help send the Red Raiders to their third-straight NCAA Regional appearance. In addition, all three players currently rank among the Tech all-time leaders in multiple single-season and career categories in the school record book. James, Kenney and Perez accounted for 39 of Tech’s school record 66 home runs last season and nearly half the team’s total RBI while recording the squad’s three highest averages.

PITCHING DEPTH TO BE A PLUS WITH RETURN OF CUSTER, TALLEYFor associate head coach Aly Sartini, the return of several familiar faces in the circle this season has the fourth-year pitching coach feeling good about her rotation as the Red Raiders return their two mainstays in the circle from a year ago in sophomore Cara Custer and junior Brittany Talley. As only a freshman, Custer became just the second 20-win pitcher in school history a year ago, joining the great Amanda Renfro, who owns the majority of single-season and career records in Texas Tech history. Custer and Talley will receive help in the circle from returning senior Ashley Brokeshoulder along with talented freshmen Gretchen Au-coin, Shannon Carrico and Tess McPherson.

YOUTH TO BE SERVED EARLY IN 2013After having a group of returners scattered throughout the infield in 2012, Shanon Hays will see several new faces around the diamond this season as the Red Raiders return only one starting infielder from a year ago in first baseman Sandy James, who will also see time behind the plate. Texas Tech had a senior at each infield spot last year, minus first base, but will turn to a talented group of freshmen this season, notably Samantha Camello, Brooke Scott and Nikki Dunlap. Camello and Scott will likely see action up the middle while Dunlap will join returning junior Taylor Powell at either third or second base.

WEEK 9: vs. KANSAS • GAMES 42-44

PEREZ, KENNEY PICK UP PRESEASON ACCOLADESTexas Tech seniors Adriana Perez and Mikey Kenney were honored in early Janu-ary on the Preseason All-Big 12 teams selected by the website collegesportsmad-ness.com. Perez led the two selections as she was one of 12 players named to the first team while Kenney picked up second team honors in the outfield. It marked the second-straight year Tech had two players honored on the website’s preseason teams as Sandy James and Emily Bledsoe were both second-team re-cipients prior to the 2012 season. Perez also picked up third-team All-American honors by the website as well as she was joined by 10 other Big 12 players on one of the publication’s four preseason All-America teams.

JAMES MAKES THE MOVE BEHIND THE PLATEFollowing the graduation of four-year starter Holley Gentsch at catcher, Sandy James made the move behind the plate this past fall where she will split time with freshman Lexie Elkins. James, who was Texas Tech’s primary first baseman the past two seasons, caught throughout her prep career at Sabine High School and was behind the plate occasionally her freshman season at Angelo State.

ELKINS ADDS DEPTH BEHIND THE PLATE AT A YOUNG AGEFor Lexie Elkins, age is only a number. As just a 17-year-old, Elkins will likely be one of the youngest, if not the youngest, players in the country this season as the Victoria, Texas native graduated high school a semester early in order to join the Red Raiders in early January. Elkins, a three-year starter for Victoria East High School, will give Texas Tech additional depth at catcher as she will com-bine with Sandy James for the majority of starts behind the plate. Elkins was the Co-Newcomer of the Year of district 30-5A during her 2010 freshman season and followed up by being named the district Co-MVP as a sophomore. She also garnered honorable mention All-American accolades in 2011 by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

JAMES, KENNEY TO BATTLE FOR CAREER HOME RUN LEADMikey Kenney and Sandy James will battle throughout the 2013 season for which senior finishes her career as the school’s all-time home run leader. Ken-ney, who broke Kim Martinez’ previous school record of 27 midway through last season, enters the year with 32 career home runs, five more than James. Kenney belted 13 home runs last season while James added 12 as well as both play-ers are prominant in the Tech single-season record book as well. James set the single-season mark with 16 home runs in 2011 during her first season in scarlet and black, breaking the previous mark of 15 that was held by Martinez (1997) and Kenney (2010).

SCHOONMAKER, SIGREST AMONG NEW FACES IN THE TECH DUGOUTTexas Tech will have two new faces in its dugout this season as assistant coach Chrissy Schoonmaker and volunteer assistant Sarah Sigrest are both entering their first year with the program. Schoonmaker arrives at Texas Tech after spend-ing the past two seasons as the volunteer assistant at her alma mater, South Carolina. Sigrest, meanwhile, comes to Tech following a highly-successful pitch-ing career at Jacksonville where she helped lead the Dolphins to their first NCAA Regional appearance in school history.

RED RAIDERS GET OKLAHOMA, TEXAS BOTH AT HOMEWith five of seven Big 12 Conference teams currently ranked or receiving votes in either top-25 poll, Texas Tech will once again have its hands full when league play begins in late March. One positive for the Red Raiders, though, is that the conference’s two top-ranked teams - No. 2 Oklahoma and No. 7 Texas - will both travel to Lubbock for three-game sets this season. Tech will host the defending national runner-up Sooners on March 12-14 before Texas makes its trip to the South Plains on March 26-28. The Red Raiders went 18-4 last season at Rocky Johnson Field which includes a win over the then-No. 5 Longhorns in Texas’ only trip during the season to Lubbock.

RED RAIDERS TO MAKE FIRST EVER APPEARANCE ON ESPNTexas Tech will make its first ever appearance on the ESPN Family of Networks in May as the Red Raiders’ series opener at Baylor will air nationally on ESPN. The game was originally set to air on ESPN2 before being upgraded in late Feburary. The three-game series was set to begin on May 3 but will instead move to a Thursday-Saturday format. The Big 12 television schedule includes five confer-ence games this season that will air on either ESPN or Fox Sports.

RED RAIDERS PICKED FOURTH IN BIG 12 PRESEASON POLLTexas Tech earned its highest Big 12 preseason ranking in school history in Janu-ary as the Red Raiders were picked to finish fourth in the seven-team league. The fourth-place nod marked the Red Raiders’ highest preseason selection since the poll was created prior to the 2000 season, breaking the previous mark from 2001 when Tech was slotted to finish tied for sixth. Oklahoma was picked as the preseason favorite for the fourth time in the last five years as the Sooners, who finished as the national runner-up a year ago, notched 36 points in the poll fol-lowed by Texas with 29 and third-place Baylor with 28. Tech earned 20 points to finish ahead of Oklahoma State (20), Kansas (12) and Iowa State (6) in the poll.

WEEK 9: vs. KANSAS • GAMES 42-44

HEAD COACH

SHANON HAYS6th Season Overall • 4th Season at Texas Tech • Lubbock Christian ‘91Career Record: 262-81 • Record at Tech: 148-65

In three seasons as Texas Tech’s head softball coach, Shanon Hays has trans-formed the Red Raiders into not only a contender in the Big 12 Conference, but nationally as well with three-straight

NCAA Regional appearances.

After inheriting a program that was only 15-42 in 2009, Hays has led the Red Raiders to back-to-back 40-win seasons as he has amassed a 121-51 record in three seasons, leaving the Lubbock native just 18 wins shy of already becoming the winningest coach in school history.

Most importantly, though, the Red Raiders have been in the postseason in each of Hays’ three sea-sons, advancing to the NCAA Stanford Regional in 2010, the Tucson Regional in 2011, and then the Seattle Regional a year ago. Tech fell in the regional finale in each of his first two seasons before Harvard ended Tech’s run in an elimination game in 2012.

Prior to his arrival, Tech had only advanced to the postseason twice in program history and had not recorded a winning record since 2001. The Red Raid-ers, who had also finished no better than eighth in the Big 12 standings in seven of the previous eight seasons, had never advanced to a regional in con-secutive seasons as well.

Hays quickly changed that in 2010, though, as he helped lead the Red Raiders to a 38-18 record, a 23-win improvement from the year before, as well as a seventh-place finish in the league standings. The Red Raiders fell to eventual College World Se-ries participant Hawaii in the Stanford Regional after Tech overcome a first-day loss by topping both UC Davis and the host Cardinal to make its way into the regional finale.

With the majority of that squad returning the fol-lowing year, the Red Raiders wrapped the 2011 campaign with a 42-16 overall record that marked the highest winning percentage in school history. It was also just Tech’s second 40-win season all-time as the Red Raiders were also 45-19 in 1998.

Hays became the program’s first coach to lead the Red Raiders to multiple postseason appearances later in the year as Tech was the No. 2 seed in the Tucson Regional. After overcoming another first-day loss, Tech fell to host Arizona in the championship game.

The Red Raiders had possibly their best season under Hays in 2012 as Tech ended the year fifth in the Big 12 standings behind a 13-10 league record, marking the program’s highest finish and first win-ning conference record since 2001. Tech navigated a 13-game stretch against top-25 teams midway through league play where the Red Raiders finished 7-6 with series wins over No. 25 Baylor and at No.

9 Missouri along with a midweek victory over No. 5 Texas.

Tech wrapped the regular season with a No. 23 ranking in the rating-percentage index (RPI) poll, seven spots higher from where it ended 2011. The Red Raiders also appeared in the top-25 rankings before closing the season by receiving votes for the second-straight season.

School records have fallen in droves under Hays as Tech has broken over 20 single-season marks in just three seasons, including the majority of the of-fensive record book. In 2011 alone, the Red Raiders snapped the single-season records for batting aver-age, runs, hits, doubles, home runs, grand slams, RBI, total bases, slugging percentage and walks.

Hays has regularly produced one of the top lineups in the nation as the Red Raiders spent most of the 2011 season with the highest batting average in the nation before ending the year fourth overall. Tech’s .341 average that year was not only the highest in school history but it also snapped the Big 12 record that was previously set by Oklahoma in 2001. The Red Raiders also averaged 7.17 runs per game, a mark that ranked fourth in the nation as well.

In addition to hitting for average, pitches have left the ball park in record numbers under Hays as Tech belted 58 in 2011 before smashing a school-record 66 a year later. Seven of the highest single-season individual totals have come in the last three seasons with Sandy James leading the group with a school-record 16 home runs in 2011. Mikey Kenney also owns the career record as she has totaled 32 home runs entering the 2013 season.

Tech’s transformation should come as little surprise after Hays’ work at Lubbock Christian. Following his appointment as the program’s first head softball coach in 2006, Hays worked for a full academic year in preparation for LCU’s first season in 2008.

The Lady Chaps did not disappoint in their inaugu-ral season, compiling a 60-9 record and claiming the NAIA National Championship which earned Hays NAIA National Coach of the Year honors. Hays wrapped his two-year tenure at LCU with a 114-16 overall record after advancing to the national cham-pionship again in 2009.

Known as a top-flight recruiter and motivator, Hays was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year both seasons and produced five NFCA and NAIA first team All-Americans during his tenure.

Hays turned to softball after a successful career as a basketball coach that included two seasons on the Texas Tech bench as an assistant coach from 1999-2001 under James Dickey. He is the first person at Texas Tech to coach two completely different sports (one men’s and now one women’s).

COACHING ACCOLADES

Hays comes from a family of coaches as his father, legendary Texas Tech baseball coach Larry Hays, roamed the Red Raider dugout from 1987-2008, where he picked up 1,509 career wins, fifth-most in NCAA history. When not coaching on the diamond, Larry Hays also could be found on the fastpitch soft-ball circuit where he pitched for several of the top local and national men’s teams.

Like his father, Shanon Hays also began playing fast-pitch softball as a youth, along with both baseball and basketball, and competed on the summer cir-cuit as well.

Shanon Hays began and ended his college career at LCU, graduating in 1991 with his degree in Educa-tion after also attending Texas Tech and competing from 1988 - 1990 for his father on the Red Raider baseball team. He competed for LCU prior to that on both the baseball and basketball teams.

He graduated from Lubbock Monterey High School in 1986 and makes his home in Lubbock with his wife, Tina, two sons, Hunter and Heath, and daugh-ter, Hampton.
