Frequently contracted by museums around the

world to restore a variety of artifacts, the Cosmosphere

operates the world’s leading space artifact restoration and

replication facility and is the only location designated

by the Smithsonian Institution to restore flown U.S.

spacecraft.

One of the Cosmosphere’s recent restoration projects

was the Liberty Bell 7 Mercury spacecraft. More than 20

major projects as well as a variety of smaller projects have

been conducted by the Cosmosphere’s restoration team.

Originally developed to provide restoration and exhibit

support to the Cosmosphere, this team’s unique expertise

is now in demand by groups around the world.

Recovered from the Atlantic in 1999 after 38 years on the ocean floor, Liberty Bell 7 posed unique challenges for the Cosmosphere’s restoration team. The Cosmosphere also restored the actual Apollo 13 command module Odyssey, which is on permanent display at the Cosmosphere.

From machining to painting to mold-making, Cosmosphere craftsmen are able to reproduce space-related replications on-site with materials and hardware that closely resemble the originals used in production – all while maintaining the highest level of historic authenticity.

The same individuals who have restored U.S. space artifacts that now reside in the Cosmosphere’s Hall of Space Museum, the National Air and Space Museum, the Museum of Flight (Seattle), White Sands Missile Range, and Glavkosmos (Moscow) are the same craftsmen who have fabricated replications for the Evergreen Aviation Museum, Tour of the Universe/Toronto, and Disneyland/Paris as well as for Ron Howard’s Apollo 13, HBO’s From the Earth to the Moon, and Tom Hank’s Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon.

Relying on experience gained since the mid-1980’s and access to original blue prints and line diagrams, Cosmosphere restoration craftsmen are able to create replications that achieve the very high level of fidelity organizations require for their exhibits.

Space Works restoration team working on various retoration and replication projects

Space Works was created 20 years ago as an entity of the Cosmosphere family and is under the direction of the Senior Vice President.

The Space Works team consists of artists, technicians, machinists, engineerandcarpenters.

This team has worked on some of the most iconic space artifacts in the history of space exploration.

Over the past 20 years the Cosmosphere has created some of the most innovative exhibits in the museum industry for its Hall of Space Museum. Additionally, the Cosmosphere is contracted by museums to design, develop and fabricate stand alone, permanent exhibits. Utilizing its professional development team, the Cosmosphere will strategize the concept with the museum, develop a plan based on idea generation and conceptual renderings and begin fabrication of specific pieces to be housed in the museum element.

One of the Cosmosphere’s current exhibit projects is the design, development and fabrication of space-related exhibit for the Evergreen Aviation Museum. The Cosmosphere not only works to enhance other museums and their exhibit space, but continually develops its own. The Cosmosphere is currently working on a comprehensive Lunar Base concept which spans from the first lunar landing to the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project.
