The Annual Meeting of the Kansas City Region will be Dec 7, 2010 at the Westport Flea Market. At this meeting the 2011 Officers and Board of Directors of the Club will be elected. I hope you are planning to attend, but if you cannot, please get your ballot to Norma Williams. By voting you will be an active member of the club. We have a couple more events in 2010. One is the Kansas Rally Weekend. Saturday, Nov 13 the KCR hosts the East to Eason Rally starting at the Grant Township Community Center, l853 E 1600 Road. Registration is at 11:30 with first car out at 1:01 pm. Sunday the Kansas Regions hosts the Pavement Ends Again Rally starting at the same location only this rally travels on some gravel roads. Registration for Sunday starts at 10:30 with first car out at 12:01. Entry fee for each event is $20.00 for SCCA members. In December the Region will celebrate with a Holiday Party at the home of Guy Watney in Overland Park. You will find more info somewhere in this Checkpoint. Remember, if you are a volunteer for Club Racing you can receive points to be applied to your dues billing and your dues can be reduced by the number of days you have worked in a calendar year. This payment plan is supported by the drivers who hope you will take advantage of this offer. The only thing you have to do is visit SCCA.com, log in and click on the tab My Membership, then click Volunteer Participation. You will have to click the add button and enter the date of the event. A drop down will give you several choices of events on that date. Click the event you worked and enter the number of days you worked and click save. Pretty simple and a nice gesture from the drivers to help the workers enjoy racing! The back page of this Checkpoint is a listing of awards presented each year at the Awards Banquet. If you would like to nominate someone for any of those awards, the BoD would Appreciate your help. Mail, email or bring your nominees to the December Meeting and the Board will gladly consider your offering. Until the next time

KANSAS CITY REGION’S 2010 ANNUAL PICNIC AND KVRG VOLUNTEER WORKER APPRECIATION DINNER The 2010 Kansas City Region Annual Picnic and KVRG Volunteer Worker Appreciation Dinner was held on October 9th, 2010 at the Willard King Farm in Gardner, KS. This is a wonderful place to spend a fun filled day with friends and it was a beautiful sunny autumn day. Thanks to Willard and his “crew”, they had the barn looking just great with new paint and the picnic signs were all out early Saturday morning. Sharlene Smith and Norma decorated the barn in a “black and white” theme, there were black tablecloths with checkered flags everywhere. Sharlene was at the sign-in table and everyone guessed how many candies were in the little plastic car. Mark Bracewell won with his guess of 147. This picnic was even greater this year as KVRG volunteered to furnish steaks, pork chops, baked potatoes and salad for everyone. Thanks to Gini Ragan, who purchased all of the food supplies. Thanks to Kent Edmondson, who arrived with his large BBQ grill and thanks to Chuck Clark, who brought over his grill as a back-up. Kent with the help of KVRG board members (all from KS Region) Kent Prather, Bill Allman and Rick Taylor did a great job, not only cooking all of the steaks and pork chops but also having them prepared timely. Dodie Rinke took charge of the baked potatoes and Ellen Wolf put together all of the salad ingredi-ents, Thank you both for doing such a great job. Thank you to Brian Landers, who made arrangements for us to purchase beer and wine from Landers Retail Liquors in Edwardsville, KS Thank you to Ken Ragan for picking up the beverages and ice and bringing them to the picnic. Thanks to the race worker coordinators, Char and Ken Keith for all of their help. After dinner, Bill Rinke presented “thank you” plaques to the Race Chiefs who worked the August Vintage Race at HPT. And I want to give a big thank you to Sharlene and Charlie Smith, Willard and my Charlie for all of their help Friday night and Saturday. And a BIG thank you to the 71 KCR members and friends who attended this picnic. We all had a great time! Norma Williams, Chairman

Kent Edmondson uses a really big grill. Some of the many members attending the picnic.

Pauline Tasler checks out the buffet table.

Virginia “Ginger” Anita King was born January 31, 1944, in Kan-sas City, KS. She graduated from High School in Topeka. On Oc-tober 29, 1971 she married Willard R King in Olathe, KS. She was an office manager for the family business, W. R. King, Con-tracting Co. in Overland Park, KS. She and Willard moved from Overland Park to Gardner in 1996. She was a homemaker. Throughout the years she raised beautiful gardens - one year she had over 75 tomato plants. She loved to sew, cook, paint, em-broider, make jewelry and can. She made a special apple sauce from apples from her own tree. She also enjoyed going to the lake and boating, often she would go 4-wheeling or be with her horses. Ginger was a member of the Kansas City Region SCCA. She loved going to the car races and car shows. She loved to cook for all of the racing boys who showed up at her RV. She also could be seen “wheeling” around the KC area in her Corvette. She had

one son, five step children, 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Of all the joys in Ginger’s life, her husband Willard was at the top of the list. We will all miss this great lady.

PLEASE CALL “MOM” WITH YOUR NEWS. YOU CAN REACH HER BY PHONE 913-262-6300 or by mail

2701 West 47th Street, Shawnee Mission KS 66205 or by Fax 913-262-6719 or by email [email protected]

Dear Mom: A picture in The Kansas City Star the first of October was of the St Thomas Aquinas High School football home-coming king and queen candidates. One of the ladies was Lauren Strickler, daughter of John & Kathy. Lauren was one of the runner up for queen. She is a senior this year and plans on going to Kansas State and enroll in veterinary school. Bryan Harris had shoulder surgery this summer but is now back at work. He said, “He would not recommend it”. Congratulations to Craig Wilcox who won B Street Prepared at the Solo Nationals in Sept at Lincoln, NE. The past three years this class was won by Tom Berry from Cal Club. After the first day Craig was in third and then on the second day (Friday) after the rain had stopped Craig’s co-driver was on his final run when a bolt anchor-ing the differential came out of Craig’s Mitsubishi Evo IX SE! The team tried to find replacement parts but no luck so Craig ask Michael Fineberg (Phil Club) if he might take one last run in his car. Berry had coned his win-ning run and Craig was heading out in a strange car. Craig driving Fineberg’s Mitsubishi Evo IV won the class by 1.477 seconds. This was his third championship. Wow! Greg Heuer of Raytown and his Moe Dangie Hillbilly Chili Team won the people’s choice category at the 24th annual Lenexa Chili Challenge in October in Old Town Lenexa. This is their 4th straight year to win this award. Bob Buxbaum driving his Saturn Sky Redline Super Street Modified Solo car not only won his Midwest Division Solo title this year but he also won all four events in his respective class. He ran at Neosho, MO, Independence, MO, Salina, KS and Lincoln, NE. Great job Bob. Soloist were able to count their best three out of four finishes toward the Divisional points title. Winning three events each in the series and their class titles were the following Kansas City Region members: Kent Edmondson driving his Toyota MR2 in E Stock; Jerry Irvine driving his BMW M3 in Street Touring Xtreme; Jake Diehl driving his Mitsubishi Evo IX MR in Street Modified; Bob Qualkinbush driving his Adams Aero in F Modified and Jordan Hill driving his Margay in Formula Junior. Kansas City Region competitors brought home 12 of the titles winning twice as many as Kansas & Nebraska Regions, who won 6 titles each. We are very proud of our solo group. Way to go!! Brian Landers was in California recently to attend a work meeting. When stepping off an elevator he suffered a massive heart attack and was taken to the hospital where he was put in an induced coma for a couple of days. After angioplasty surgery and the installation of two stints Brian is now home and on the road to recovery. Sprint (where Brian is employed) flew Brian’s wife and mother to California in the CEO’s private jet. Brian served this year as secretary on the KCR board and was also Chief Instructor for the racing PDX events at HPT. Our condolences to Willard King and his family on the death of his wife, Virginia “Ginger” King. Ginger passed away on Sept 15th and she was greatly missed at our annual picnic.
