Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science School ProfileProgram Description
The Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science (KAMS),
is the state’s premier academic high school program for
the state’s best and brightest high school students. The
Academy recently welcomed the seventh class of students.
KAMS is a unique residential learning experience that
provides exceptional high school juniors and seniors the
chance to live and study on the campus of Fort Hays State
University, in Hays, Kansas. Students actively engage in the
following areas of academia:
• College-level instruction by Ph.D. faculty
• Hands-on research supervised by Ph.D. scientists
• Leadership development and civic engagement opportunities
• Co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities to
develop the whole student
KAMS provides an opportunity for academically talented
pupils to work in a community of peers and to earn
simultaneous college credits and a high school diploma.
Fall 2017 marks the ninth year that KAMS students join the
Fort Hays State University community. These exceptional
students represent urban, suburban and rural communities
from across the state. Upon the successful completion of
KAMS, students will receive a certificate of completion as
well as a high school diploma from their sending school.
Although students complete their remaining two years of
high school at Fort Hays State University, they technically
remain enrolled in their sending high school.
Admission to KAMS
Prospective students must have completed at least two
years of high school with distinction in mathematics or
science. The academy takes the following into consideration
when selecting candidates for the KAMS program: (1) ACT
minimum score of 23 or SAT minimum score of 1140,
(2) Completion of Algebra II and Geometry, (3) Class rank,
(4) GPA during the student’s 9th and 10th grade years,
(5) Teacher evaluations, (6) Parent/student essays.
Outstanding academic achievement is not the only criterion
for acceptance. KAMS selects students based on drive,
interest, maturity, stability, and personal and family
commitment.
International Students Attending KAMS
International students attending KAMS are enrolled at the
local public high school, which is Hays High School. Even
though students take courses through the KAMS program
at Fort Hays State University, international students are
enrolled at Hays High School and their transcripts are
housed there. During the college application process,
international students will submit a Fort Hays State
University transcript and a Hays High School transcript.
Accreditation
Fort Hays State University is accredited by the Higher
Learning Commission. KAMS is a member of the National
Consortium of Secondary Schools.

Departmental Research and Writing
The hands-on research that is completed alongside Ph.D. faculty members is what sets our students apart from other academies and high schools around the nation.
Through research projects, KAMS students are given the opportunity to explore their intellectual curiosity and apply content knowledge that they are learning in the
classroom. Evidence shows that students who are actively involved in research garner a better understanding of the academic area they are studying. Some examples
