Welcome to our

Kangaroo Island Tour

Kangaroo Island is the third largest Island to the Mainland after Tasmania and Melville Island. Separated from the Mainland by the Backstairs Passage, the Island does not have foxes or rabbits, but a wonderful range of wildlife including: Sea Lions on the South Coast, Fur Seals at the Western End and Pelicans at Kingscote.

This unique island is also the site of the first ever settlement in South Australia. Kangaroo Island has a population of approximately 4,500 with the main town being Kingscote. Our accommodation for three nights is at the 1834 Ozone Hotel in Kingscote.

We also enjoy a wonderful cruise in the Coorong National Park and tour the Fleurieu Peninsula.

DAY 1: Wednesday 21st March, 2018

MELBOURNE - MT GAMBIER

With pick up from home this morning, we transfer to O’Shannessy’s Coach and travel via the Westgate Bridge to Geelong for our morning tea break from the coach. From Geelong we drive to Warrnambool, a beautiful seaside city on the shores of Lady Bay. More than 100 ships and boats were wrecked within 80 kilometres from Warrnambool, hence the current name for the area - The Shipwreck

Coast. Following a late lunch, we continue our journey west to Heywood, Dartmoor and across the border to Mt. Gambier. We take a short tour of this South Australian town, of particular interest are the craters of extinct volcanoes, including the famous “Blue Lakes”, the source of Mount Gambier’s water supply. The volume of this fresh water lake neither diminishes nor gains and its water source is still unknown. We also visit the beautifully landscaped Umpherston Cave. We then head to our accommodation and have time to freshen up before dinner.

OVERNIGHT: Quality Inn Presidential, MOUNT GAMBIER

DAY 2: Thursday 22nd March, 2018

MT GAMBIER TO VICTOR HARBOR

Following breakfast we begin our journey into South Australia, stopping at Penola for our morning tea break off the coach. The town was established in the 1850’s and is where Australia’s first saint the Blessed Mary MacKillop and Fr

Julian Tenison Woods, co-founded the Institute of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart - initially to provide a Catholic education for poor, isolated and rural children. Leaving Penola we drive on to Keith where we stop for lunch. We continue along the Dukes Highway through Tintinara

and make a brief stop at Coonalpyn to admire the breathtaking images of 5 local children at play, painted on the town’s 30m high Viterra Grain Silo by artist Guido Van Helten. We travel on to the “Heritage Town” of Strathalbyn. The railway reached

Strathalbyn in 1884 and copper was smeltered in the district until 1914. Today the quaint town is popular for its architecture and pleasant atmosphere. We continue on to lovely Victor Harbor and the McCracken Country Club for our overnight accommodation. We’ll be back in Victor Harbor later in our tour for the opportunity to look around.

OVERNIGHT: McCracken Country Club, VICTOR HARBOR

DAY 3: Friday 23rd March, 2018

KANGAROO ISLAND ENTERPRISES

This morning, we take the scenic drive to Cape Jervis where we board the Sea Link ferry across Backstairs Passage to Penneshaw. Back on the coach we begin our days sightseeing. Our first visit is a fascinating one. We arrive at Raptor Domain for their free flight birds of prey

demonstration. Raptor Domain will also be our lunch venue. After lunch we will be introduced to some unique Kangaroo Island ventures - the first one is Clifford’s Honey Farm for a honey ice cream and to learn about the unique Ligurian Bee. Very close by is Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil Distillery where we take a

very interesting tour of the plant and equipment involved in producing eucalyptus oil product. We now head to Kingscote, the island’s main town, where we check into our next three nights accommodation.

OVERNIGHT: 1834 Ozone Hotel, KINGSCOTE DAY 4: Saturday 24th March, 2018

KANGAROO ISLAND - NATURAL WONDERS OF THE SOUTH COAST

Today is a naturalist’s treat! We spend our day along the South Coast beginning with a visit to the world famous Seal Bay for a chance to walk along the beach amongst the colony of Australian Sea Lions who live here all year

round. It is an unforgettable experience to be guided by a National Parks Ranger, along the beach, within metres of the bulls, cows and seal pups as they rest on the beach. We then drive to Rocky River where we have plenty of time to

spend in the Visitors Centre before our picnic lunch. This afternoon we continue our touring in the Flinders Chase National Park. Our sightseeing includes the Remarkable Rocks, Cape du Couedic and Admirals Arch where, via a spectacular board walk, we can see close up a colony of New Zealand Fur Seals who

live in the sea and the rocks just below us. After a fascinating day, we return to the hotel via a different route and have time to freshen up for dinner.

OVERNIGHT: 1834 Ozone Hotel, KINGSCOTE

DAY 5: Sunday 25th March, 2018

MORE KANGAROO ISLAND

We have a more leisurely start to the day and for anyone wishing to stretch their legs, there is a pleasant walk along the waters edge right outside our hotel. First stop this morning is at South Australia’s first Sheep Milking Dairy and Cheese Factory Island

Pure. Depending on the farm schedule we may see the sheep milking under way (a sight you’ll never forget!) and a detailed video presentation will explain the operations followed by an opportunity to sample some island cheese and

yoghurt. Next we make our way to beautiful Emu Bay. At the Lavender Farm, we enjoy an informative talk and lunch. Back in Kingscote, we have some free time to explore the town and perhaps purchase a souvenir of our holiday! Later this afternoon,

there’s time to view the Pelican Feeding before we enjoy dinner*.

*Pelican feeding is located diagonally across the road from the hotel on the beach (donation).

OVERNIGHT: 1834 Ozone Hotel, KINGSCOTE

DAY 6: Monday 26th March, 2018

VICTOR HARBOR

This morning we say farewell to Kangaroo Island and board the ferry at Penneshaw for our return journey to the mainland. Back on board the coach, we retrace our steps back to Victor Harbor. After lunch, we take the horse drawn tram across to Granite Island. We have some free time to explore “Victor”, as the locals know it. Perhaps take the opportunity to visit the SA Whale Centre (own expense). Victor Harbor was originally a whaling centre with three whaling stations in the mid - 1900s. An estimated 400 Southern Right

Whales arrived into Encounter Bay each season. Unfortunately these magnificent mammals were destroyed back then but they have returned to the bay in increasing numbers. Later this afternoon, we check into our accommodation with time to settle in before dinner.

OVERNIGHT: McCracken Country Club, VICTOR HARBOR DAY 7: Tuesday 27th March, 2018

SPIRIT OF THE COORONG CRUISE

Following breakfast we travel through to the old river port town of Goolwa where we board the "Spirit of the Coorong" for an informative and

Page 9: Kangaroo Island and the Coorong - O'Shannessy's Quality Tours · 2019-10-19 · Coast.Following a late lunch, we continue our journey west to Heywood, Dartmoor and across the border

relaxing luncheon cruise. Our cruise takes us along the river bank as our Captain tells us of some of the history of the area. At the Goolwa Barrage we pass through the lock - keep an eye out for the resident fur seal colony! We'll enjoy morning tea as we cruise down the final stretch of the Murray River to the Murray Mouth. Here we cruise across into the Coorong National Park. Passing a series of barrages our Captain explains the man-made weir and lock system before we stop for a guided walk to hear about the cockle industry and the Ngarrindjeri aboriginal people who lived in this

area. Back on board, we'll enjoy lunch as we cruise further into the Coorong, past the spectacular sand dunes and birdlife of the Younghusband Peninsula, with commentary by our captain on the passing features, bird-life and history as we go. Arriving at Long Point Wharf we farewell our Captain and re-join our coach for the onward journey Mount Gambier.

OVERNIGHT: Quality Inn Presidential, MOUNT GAMBIER

DAY 8: Wednesday 28th March, 2018

MOUNT GAMBIER - MELBOURNE

This morning we travel the very picturesque area of Victoria’s Western District via Casterton and Coleraine to Hamilton. Hamilton is set among the rolling hills which produce some of the finest merino wool in the world. The town has therefore adopted the slogan “wool capital of the world”. Heading for home we travel to Mortlake where we stop for lunch.

Continuing on, we cross the Princes Highway through Camperdown . Camperdown sits on the “great volcanic plain” we travel alongside miles of fascinating dry stone walls which are a feature of the countryside and known as the stony rises. The walls were built in the 1860’s by highly skilled “wallers” from

Ireland and Scotland. We also pass by many crater lakes, some more salty than the sea. We arrive at Geelong mid afternoon and continue on to Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula to complete a wonderful time away. As always, our chauffeurs will be there to greet us and return us safely to our doorstep.

We trust you arrive home safely with memories of a fascinating and rewarding tour.

We thank you for travelling with O’Shannessy’s Tours and look forward to your patronage again in the future!
