Principal’s Message Term 3 has commenced

All staff undertook the mandatory professional learning in the first module of the Illawarra South East Region “No Gap No Excuse” – Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Training on Monday 16 July and were inspired by the personal stories expressed by some of the school’s Aboriginal staff members. It was a very moving experience for staff and provided an opportunity for all staff to embark on a journey of learning that will enhance understanding and relationships between school staff, Aboriginal students and their supportive community.

Lateness to classes

Students were reminded this week that lateness to school and class significantly interferes with their learning and any lateness that cannot be satisfactorily explained will be treated as truancy. The initial consequence of truancy is an afterschool detention, followed by a pre-suspension warning and finally suspension.

Students are expected to be in class on time and prepared for the learning provided by the teaching staff.

The school’s Outreach Program

There are now 46 students participating in our special program at Kanahooka High School, designed to support and re-engage students not able to participate in mainstream schooling. It has been a remarkable journey to see this program grow from its initial conception to the vibrant multifaceted program operating at the school today.

Young mothers support, distance education, work placement and socialisation skills are the four components of the program now managed by our handpicked team of dedicated staff supporting the program. Interest in the program has been received from up and down the Illawarra South East Region and an expression of interest has been sent from Wagga Wagga in the Riverina. Our staff will be explaining the program to Riverina Principals later this term.

Youth Parliament – Representative

Danielle Aikman represented the Shellharbour electorate recently and reports that the experience of sitting in parliament and participating in parliamentary procedures is something she is keen to follow up. Danielle explained that meeting other young people from around the state was an invaluable experience for her.

Ex student and former School Captain, Delfina Dimoski was also a youth parliamentarian as a Year 11 student at Kanahooka High School.

Touch Football Competition The Indigenous Combined Schools Mixed Touch Football Competition is now being held on Wednesday August 1 at Kanahooka High School. More details will be in next week's newsletter. J Burns

Year 12 Fundraising On the first Sunday of the holidays, while many were getting a much deserved sleep in, six Year 12 students braved the cold morning and took part in a fund raiser at Dapto Markets. 6.30 am was the meeting time to get our stall going. We set up and began selling. By mid morning the sun and some hot chocolate warmed us up a little, but not as much as the energy radiated from the enthusiasm that came from our students. We managed to sell almost everything and raised over $240, which will go towards Year 12's gift to Kanahooka High School at the end of the year. As always, it was a privilege to work alongside these students. They are an example of the wonderful and responsible students we have at KHS. Ms S Abarcia (Year Adviser)

Year 9 Photography Excursion to Kiama On June 20, one of the Year 9 Photography classes went to Kiama for an excursion. It was a beautiful, sunny day. We made our way down on the train and for one of our students the trip was extra special as it was her first time on a train. Once in Kiama, little trigger happy fingers were keen to get snapping. As we made our way around Kiama, our students showed off their learnt skills as they took in the scenery and saw things around them with a new perspective. Lunch as always was welcomed and a walk to the lolly shop a real thrill. The films will be developed and printed by the students in class and displayed in our annual Photography Exhibition later in Term 4. Ms S Abarcia

Subject Selection for Year 9 2013 Week 1 Term 3 - Thursday 19/7/12 Students will be given the Subject Information booklets at the Year meetings. Week 2 - Friday 27/7/12 Students are to make their choices on the sheet at the back of the booklet and

Subject Selection for Year 11 2013 Year 10 students will choose subjects for Year 11 2013 early this term. The procedure is as follows: Week 1 Term 3 - Thursday 19/7/12 at year meetings Students will be given an information booklet describing the subjects that will be offered in 2013. Week 2 Monday 23/7/12 Year 10 will be reminded about the Subject Selection Information evening. This will be held on 24 July in the School Library from 6.00pm – 8.00pm. There will be a presentation, and parents and students can ask questions of the teachers regarding particular subjects so that informed choices can be made. available on the night or from Mr Panecasio on Wednesday 25 July. The

completed selections are to be returned by Friday 27 July. Hard copies are to

be returned to Mr Panecasio.
