Sky and Earth
The Owl’ s
Tale
The Solar Deity and the Lunar Deity
Into the
Ainu World
The First
Kamuy
S T O R Y
Long, long ago nothing yet
existed in the world.
Fire rose up from
something mysteriousfloating on the blue world,
burning and burning to create
the sky and islands.
There alighted a
shimmering,
rainbow-colored owl.
On the signal of it blinking
its eyes, the two kamuy gave
birth to many more kamuy.
Of these,
the solar deityand the lunar deitywere born and rose into
the heavens to bring light
into the world.
Finally, the two kamuy
created humansin their own image and
completed the Ainu world.
The singing of
the Upopoyresounds to this day to
show thanks to the kamuy.
One kamuy was born
out of the orange vapor and
another from the pure sky
and onto the earth.
They grabbed clouds in five
different colors and tossed
each color to form the sea,
earth, treasures,
plants and creatures,
one after another.
This is the tale of the beginning of the world, as told by a fireside long ago by an old Ainu man.
A light and sound show of the Ainu creation myths. Projection mapping makes the evening
sparkle with visions of animals, trees and a lake -- an experience embracing the mythical world.
