The printed image: People have been trying to improve this since the dawn of time – since the first drawings on the walls of caves.
A picture is worth a thousand words (or
so goes the saying), however, the
emotion sparked by any image depends
on the quality of the image.
Advertisers, for example, looking to
convey a message and generate demand
for their products are driven for images
that jump out at us; images that
generate emotion; hit a nerve; or make
us curious to want to see more.

For Huber, it’s all about the image – the
printed image. It’s also about producing
the results your customers expect.
Your paper coating has to perform
from coating makedown and
application through the printing
process. You expect that, in coating
your sheet, the value of the paper
increases significantly because the
printed image is superior. And kaolin is
one of the keys to attain a high quality
printed image – an image that is clear,
crisp and leaps off the page. Kaolin is
the functional pigment used to deliver
the printed quality your customers
expect.
Huber has been supplying high quality
kaolin products since 1938. We have a
full range of kaolin products for the
paper industry and are a leading
producer of high brightness coating
clays globally. From coated board to
newsprint; from magazines to the high-
est quality art papers; across the world
Huber’s kaolin products are at work.

KaMin LLC operates three manufacturing facilities in Georgia collectively producing nearly 2 MM tons of clay annually.
A leading producer of Georgia kaolin
products for the paper industry, Huber
is the only producer in Georgia to
operate plants in each of the three
distinctly different crude regions of the
state. This provides access to coarse
platy feedstocks as well as the finest
high brightness crudes. But our
expertise is not in what is found in the
ground but rather in our innovative
spirit that has pioneered new
techniques for processing and has
consistently delivered new concepts to
the industry on how to use kaolin
products in paper.
For instance, Huber pioneered and
leads the world in the production of
fine glossing, high brightness clays,
namely Hydragloss® 90. These products
are continuing to see steady growth
driven by increased usage of calcium
carbonate in coating formulations and
the demand placed on runnability
from new high speed paper machines.
Huber also pioneered and developed
super conducting magnetic separation
resulting in better separation of
impurities and more importantly
improved energy efficiency of the
overall process. Huber continues to
invest in kaolin-process technology to
ensure that our customers’ needs can
be met cost effectively.
In order to develop the right products
and solutions, Huber draws on decades
of experience and an innovative
spirit. Our engineers, scientists and
mining and exploration experts ensure
our kaolin products match up well
with the other components in the
coating formulation.
ProductsKaMin LLC’s full product line is
anchored by our flagship product,
Hydragloss® 90, a fine particle high
brightness glossing clay used world-wide
to impact gloss and print performance
in high carbonate coatings.
In fact, it’s simply the most widely
used coating clay in high quality
coated freesheet and coated bleached
board grades. Coupled with its
excellent high shear rheology, it’s no
wonder why Hydragloss 90 is the
performance in high carbonate
coatings. Our Lithoprint® and
HuberPrime® coating kaolins can
deliver improved fiber coverage and
roto printability, typically in higher
kaolin formulations. As a full line
supplier we also have products ranging
from standard #1 clays, like
Hydrafine®, to delaminated clays,
Hydraprint®, and of course structured
kaolins, Hubertex® and Hubertex D

product of choice for the newest paper
machines in the world. This fine
glossing coating clay has allowed
papermakers to formulate coatings to
maximize calcium carbonate levels as
well as coating solids, while ensuring
that the needed gloss, print quality and
runnability are achieved.
Huber has continued to develop
products such as our Covergloss® and
Covergloss XG coating clays that
provide additional optical and print
Value from the ground up.
As the use of carbonate-containing
coatings increased, Huber embraced
this conversion and responded by
making sure that our products could
be used readily and would complement
this conversion delivering the gloss and
printability that was needed. We
termed this process The Coating
ArchitectureSM Approach and this is
still the approach we use today. Thus,
Huber was at the forefront of solving
print problems using these new
coatings. Since then, we‘ve applied this
approach to helping our customers
achieve the highest quality at the
lowest cost.
In the late 1980’s, Huber led the way in
installation of the first high speed
laboratory coater (CLC). In the 1990’s,
Huber was one of three companies and
the only kaolin producer to invest in
Centre International De Couchage Inc.
(CIC), the state-of-the-art pilot coating
facility in Quebec, Canada. Nearly 10
years later we continue to leverage
these assets to develop solutions for our
customers, especially those that involve
improving the printed image.
In the end, the performance of the
paper is judged by the image it leaves
in the mind of the consumer. So while
necessary, it is not enough to produce
kaolin efficiently or even to know how
to apply it effectively on paper, one
must also be able to design, evaluate
and modify the quality of the image
that is produced on the sheet. With
that end result in mind, Huber has
invested in a print lab designed by a
printing and ink expert. These
commitments enable Huber to deliver
the products that allow the image to
convey the emotion (or tell the story)
that 1,000 words cannot.
DistributionHuber delivers kaolin to the paper
industry throughout the globe in slurry
and spray-dried form in the following
packages: dry bulk, supersacks (1 MT)
and small bags (50lb or 25 kg). Over
50% of our production is sold and
shipped outside North America
generally through the port of
Savannah, Georgia. Each year roughly
three million tons of Georgia kaolin
ships through the port of Savannah
where three terminals handle the clay
in a variety of forms. These terminals
have a long history of handling clay
and Huber works closely with the
kaolin shippers to ensure the quality
of the product.
