I continue to be delighted by the quality of this school, the dedication and hard work of its teaching and support staff and the friendly, positive dispositions of its students. In particular, the senior students on the SRC, who met with me last Monday morning, presented as articulate, informed and mature in presenting and discussing issues of concern on behalf of the student body. Congratulations are due to the forty-four students who represented the school at the recent Zone Swimming Carnival. A late burst of successes in the relay events resulted in Warilla High School again becoming the overall champion school on the day, a continuation of the success we have had at this event in recent years. A special mention to the junior swimmers who led this late charge and the staff who managed our swimming team on the day. A focus in the short term is on school uniform compliance by all students. Mention has been made at student assemblies and in Year meetings of the inappropriateness of tights/leggings being worn without school shorts or skirt over them. I seek parent/carer support in ensuring that our students are correctly attired at school. There is a Student Assistance Scheme which may provide some financial support in the purchase of school uniform items. Students are reminded regularly that personal presentation is a key element in the employment application process. I look forward to meeting many of our parents at the Year 7 Parent Afternoon which is next Tuesday at 2.00pm in the Alan Petersen Pavilion, adjacent to the School Hall. Here you will have the opportunity to meet with your child’s teachers and discuss their transition into high school. Light refreshments will be served. The next P&C meeting will be on Tuesday 13 March at 7.30pm in the Library. This is the Annual General Meeting of the P&C and members need to be financial to vote at this meeting for 2012 office bearers. Jeff Jacobs Relieving Principal Deputies Reports Year 11 Camp Congratulations to the terrific group of Year 11 students who attended the Camp during Week 4. Reports have been extremely positive from students and staff and we look forward to hearing more about this great experience over the coming weeks. A big thank you to Mr Morris and Mr Meizer for their organisation of this terrific experience for our students. Thank you also to all of the staff who accompanied Year 11 on the Camp. Entry onto school grounds by students A reminder that all students must enter through the main gates of the school. The only exception to this procedure is when a student is taking their bike or scooter to the bike compound. In this instance students should walk their bike or scooter from the western entry gate to the bike racks staying to the side of the road. Tuesday afternoon finish time It has come to my attention that some students are causing disruption at local primary schools as they are arriving too early to collect their younger brothers or sisters on Tuesdays. Please ensure Warilla High School students do not arrive at Warilla Public School before 2.55pm. Footwear A reminder that students must wear appropriate footwear to school. Predominantly black or white solid and supportive shoes are required. Please note: light canvas shoes such as Rabens (or similar) are not acceptable. For any questions regarding appropriate footwear please contact Mrs Fallo- Cranney or Mrs Raison. Year 11 Assessment Booklets Year 11 have been issued with their 2012 Preliminary Assessment Booklet this week. Thank you to Mrs Unicomb and Mrs Condon for their organisation of this essential resource for our senior students. Year 11 students must ensure that they read this document carefully and check their relevant subjects for important assessment information. Positive Behaviour Congratulations to the vast majority of our students who have displayed outstanding behaviour for the first 4 weeks of Term 1. Our Year 7 students have been working extremely hard to maintain an outstanding record and qualify for the Easter Show excursion. Student behaviour on our weekly assemblies has been exceptional and our student representatives at community events and functions continue to receive the highest of praise. Well done to these students, we are extremely proud of the vast majority of Warilla High School students who represent our school with commitment, respect and a positive approach. Jenni Raison Deputy Principal Uniform There is still a concern with female students wearing tights to school with no skirt or shorts over the top. Tights are not part of the school uniform. Students who are caught wearing tights will require parents to bring a suitable change of clothes up to the school for their child to change into or will be asked to put on suitable attire from the clothing pool for the day.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Term one is now well under way at Warilla High School and we are finally getting some drier weather to allow full programs to run without interruption, especially in outdoor subjects like PDHPE.

Skateboards The school strongly discourages students from bringing skateboards to school. There is a high level of risk in the travelling to and from school. If your child decides to ride a skateboard to school then they must be stored in the bike compound for the day. They are not to remain on the students’ person or in their bag during the day as it poses an OH&S risk. Skateboards cannot be kept in either Deputy’s office or in any staffrooms. As is school policy, any items of value that are brought to school are done so at the students own risk, the school will not take responsibility for this property.

CAREERS University of Wollongong Discovery Day On Monday 6th February 37 Year 12 students attended the UOW Discovery Day. This is a day where students get the opportunity to experience university life first hand by attending lectures of choice and participating in social activities at lunchtime. Our students had a great day and I was very proud of their maturity and behaviour. The UOW has a Facebook page ‘UOW Future’. I recommend students search and ‘like’ this page as it is a wealth of information and a place where questions can be asked and answered by university personnel.

Defence Technical Scholarship Applications are open for the Defence Technical Scholarship (DTS) which provides $2000 for Year 11 and $3000 for Year 12 students. This scholarship is designed to encourage students to stay at school and complete Year 11 and 12 whilst studying mathematics and technical trade subjects (VET). It is a scholarship focused on students undertaking a technical trade pathway, not a tertiary pathway. There is no commitment for DTS recipients to join the Australian Defence Force (ADF); however students must demonstrate an interest in ADF Technical trades to complete the application process. If interested in applying for this scholarship you need to see Mrs Glasgow in the Careers Hub for an application pack. The application period closes midnight 9th March 2012.

SCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL On Thursday 9 February our annual school swimming carnival was held at Warilla Pool.

On what looked to be a miserable morning, turned into a brilliant sunny day. The carnival had a fantastic atmosphere.

Congratulations to all students who attended and participated in events. A special thank you must be given to the wonderful Year 12 students who entertained the spectators and made the carnival a memorable one.

Congratulations also to the age champions of the carnival:

Girls

12yrs – Bree Millar 13yrs – Nicole Papadimas 14yrs – Emerson Leighton 15yrs – Amber Jones 16yrs – Cassie Naydovska 17yrs – Jaime Catterall Boys 12yrs – Luke Hunter 13yrs – Lachlan Rye 14yrs – Jye Edwards 15yrs – Josh King 16yrs – Nathan Lomas 17yrs – Aaron Schneider

It is rare that a school has a whole school swimming carnival and a big thank you must be given to the staff and students who helped ensure that the carnival went ahead and ran so successfully. It was a very enjoyable day for all who attended and over sixty students earnt the opportunity to compete at the Zone Swimming Carnival.

On Wednesday 15 February I accompanied 44 students who competed at the Zone Swimming Carnival at Dapto pool. I was extremely impressed with the behaviour and attitude the students displayed in representing Warilla High School and fielding nearly every possible relay team. Warilla High School was so successful at the Zone Carnival that we won the overall pointscore.

Congratulations to all competitors, you all should be very proud of your efforts at the carnival. You have been part of one of the biggest teams taken to a Zone Swimming Carnival for Warilla High School. Well done!

The results from the Zone Carnival are on display in the PE Staffroom noticeboard and permission notes for the South Coast Regional Championships to be held at Dapto Pool on 7

March will be given to the Zone team soon.

Congratulations on your excellent efforts, I’m very proud of you all.

VINNIES BREAKFAST CLUB It is my pleasure to announce that the St Vincent de Paul Warilla High Breakfast club has re-commenced for 2012.

This opportunity is provided on Monday and Wednesday mornings to our students who can benefit, both from a spot to sit quietly and socialise with their peers and having something to eat.

The volunteers from Vinnies are at the School hall from 6:45am till 8:25am and they prepare a variety of foods, including a cooked breakfast. This has proved to be a very worthwhile opportunity over the previous few years, with staff observing an improvement in students not being hungry which was proving to lower their ability to concentrate.

Thanks must again be extended to Vinnies volunteers who enable this to occur. Thanks also to the students who have attended the first few weeks and have been so polite and helpful - it does not go unnoticed.

GRANDPARENTS DAY Please save the date of Wednesday 21 March if you would like to attend the Warilla High event for Seniors Week.

This activity is hosted by the students in the R3 class and is in the planning. Please watch for more information in future newsletters and by invitation.

WELFARE NEWS Anti-bullying workshops will be held for Years 7 & 8 on

Thursday 15 March. Bamboo Theatre will be conducting both workshops with the Year 7 performance focusing on the consequences of our online actions whilst the Year 8 production will be looking at coping with the influences of peer pressure. Students will be given a permission note shortly and will need to pay $5 at the front office.

If any student is interested in tutoring for all subjects can they please see Mr Stanizzo in E36? Tutoring is available in all subjects free of charge every Wednesday afternoon from 2:45pm until 4:00pm. The tutoring takes place in E21 and is conducted by Justine Norris who is a current University Student and employed at the school as a School Learning Support Officer.

30 Years 9 & 10 students have been selected to participate in the Independent Employment Advisor Program. This program involves a caseworker from Workplace Learning Illawarra providing ‘one on one’ case management and transition to work planning activities relevant to the individual student’s interests. This program is being co-ordinated by Mr Meizer and Mr Neill in 2012.

Once again we have Louise Hakkenbrock who is a youth worker from Shellharbour City Council at the school every Wednesday available in the Welfare Hub, for students to access.

An Anger Management / Social Skilling Program is held at the school every Friday. This program is co-ordinated by Maria Prudente who is employed by the Department of Education and Communities. She provides a mentoring

service for our students which focuses on social skilling and anger management.

Mrs Bryant and Mr Neill are in the process of organising a Year 9 good student reward excursion to Jamberoo Recreation Park on Friday 23 March. The purpose of these excursions are to strengthen the bond within Year groups and to reward the majority of our students who behave in an impeccable manner.

A reminder to all Year 7 students that you need to earn 5 merit certificates and avoid disciplinary action by the school in order to receive an invitation to the Easter Show excursion on Thursday 5 April.

I would hope by now that all Year 12 students have organised a meeting with their individual teacher mentors. The teacher mentors have been put in place to assist our students in setting goals, assisting in the organisation of study timetables and providing students with an additional support network.

As I write this I hope that all of our Year 11 students are having the time of their lives on their “Crossroads” camp at Wombaroo. A special mention to Mr Morris and Mr Meizer who have put tremendous time and effort into organising this camp and providing our students with such a wonderful opportunity.

If you have any enquiries about any of the information provided above do not hesitate to contact me at the school on 02 42963055.
