    TONGATONGA tongatong is a percussioninstrument made of variouslengths of bamboo, which isfound in the Kalinga province

    of the Philippines. It is playedby hitting it against theearth. Traditionally, tongatongs

    are used by the people ofKalinga to communicate withspirits, particularly as part of

    healing rituals.

    A bungkaka, also known as

    the bamboo buzzer is a

    percussion instrument

    (idiophone) made out ofbamboo common in

    numerous indigenous tribes

    around thr Philippines such asthe Ifugao, Kalinga, and

    Ibaloi.

    It is a bamboo pipe that is closed

    on one end by a node with the

    open end held against the

    Bamboo tube, closed at

    both end by a node. In bothnodes a star shaped opening

    is cut. Five strings are cut

    loose from the skin, and liftedand tuned with small pieces

    of wood. The tube is cracked

    and slightly opened toimprove resonance.

    GANGSA

    is a single hand-held smooth-surfaced gong with a narrow

    rim. A set of gangsa, which is

    played one gong permusician, consists of gangsa

    tuned to different notes,

    depending on regional or

    local cultural preferences.

    The gangsa is played in twoways. One way is called"toppaya" and the other iscalled "pattung." In "toppaya"style, the musicians play thesurface of the gangsa withtheir hand while in a sittingposition, with a single gangsaresting on the lap of eachmusician.

    A smaller type of bamboo percussionare the quill shaped tubes. These aremade of bamboo tubes, smaller in

    diameter (ca. 3.5 cm.) than thetongatong. They are closed in oneend with a node. In the upperportion of the tube, about half of the

    bamboo is cut away leaving theremaining half to protrude like atongue.

    Aerophone, lip valley flute (notch

    flute)Open bamboo pipe, top end cut at

    an angle. Three by one finger holes.

    The paldong is a traditional lip-valleyflute of the Kalinga tribes in thePhilippines. The paldong is made ofbamboo. Its upper edge is cut awayobliquely from the backside, andthen cut away slightly from thefrontside.
