Commonwealth Class is a special initiative by the BBC, the British Council and the Commonwealth Secretariat that provides teaching resources, online debates and interactive activities for schools to mark the run-up to the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

The Commonwealth Games is an international, multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. The event was first held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada and has taken place every four years ever since. To make a positive impact on society and the general well-being of the people of the Commonwealth, the Commonwealth Games Federation also encourages and assists education via sport development and physical recreation. Commonwealth Class aims to energise young people’s learning by bringing together schools and children from across the Commonwealth to learn how to make the most of their place in the Commonwealth and wider world.

In New Delhi, the 2014 Commonwealth Games fever scaled its first peak when more than 3000 students from 65 schools, each representing a Commonwealth country, gathered at the Chattarsal Stadium, New Delhi on 11 October 2013 to celebrate the arrival of the Queen’s Baton to India.

The Queen’s Baton Relay Games were declared open by the Chief Guest, Akhil Kumar, gold medallist in boxing from the 2006 Commonwealth Games at Melbourne. What followed next was a scintillating display of March Past by all the participants, including children from special schools. Dressed in the country’s traditional attire, the flag bearers showed pride in upholding the culture of that nation. The sports events followed suit with the heats for the 100 metres, 200 metres, shot put, and long jump.

Each participating school also created a collage, portraying the essence of the nation they represented. The vibrant and colourful collage stamped the hard work put in by the students in terms of research for the country’s culture, tradition, and legacy. It was a truly difficult job for the judges to pick the best three.
