Remote Employee Experience Index The Remote Employee Experience Index measures perceptions of key elements of working life such as productivity, sense of belonging and work-life balance.

The highest possible score of +100 would indicate that all employees feel working from home is much better than working in the office. A neutral score of 0 would indicate on balance, working from home is the same as working in the office. The lowest possible score of -100 would indicate that all employees feel working from home is worse.

Impact on Sense of Belonging The one element where most employees are less satisfied is their sense of belonging (-5.0). Organisations should invest in building relationships between employees, as these bonds are vital to the long term health of teams.

Connection Relationships matter. Connection is the biggest challenge to remote work. That includes both logistical connections, such as reliable Wi-Fi and also the relationships that keep us engaged and productive at work.

“ Say no to status meetings: Over half of all workers report attending weekly meetings to share updates with their team, but rather than improving workers’ connection and camaraderie, they tend to do the opposite. Workers who attend status meetings report a lower sense of belonging (-3) compared with those who receive status updates in writing (+6). Moving updates out of meetings and into asynchronous digital channels can help free up time for more meaningful team conversations and rapport building.

Companies are rapidly having to deploy new methods to cultivate inclusion, belonging and connectivity, without the possibility of bringing everyone together for rousing speeches and social time.

Organisations are having to be more intentional about how to keep people connected, communicating and collaborating. The lack of ‘water cooler conversations’ means we are missing those serendipitous opportunities too integrate and co-create with spontaneity.

1. Give kudos: Feeling valued and dedicating time to recognising the contributions of others at least once every two weeks had the largest effect on workers’ sense of belonging (+10). However, only 1 out of 3 workers reported having these types of celebrations at work. Not every celebration needs to involve cake. Teams should place more emphasis on ensuring that others know their contributions are valued, whether that’s acknowledging their efforts in a team meeting or sharing accomplishments via a company communication platform.

2. Don’t underestimate team building: Workers who participate in dedicated monthly team-building activities like challenges, brainstorms or group games feel their sense of belonging improve significantly (+10). In remote work environments, these activities take on an added importance. They give newer employees an opportunity to build relationships and trust with colleagues, while strengthening existing team connections.3.

Challenge: Protecting the UK’s public health services during the pandemic continues to be no small task for DHSC employees. Whilst working from home, many colleagues lost sight of their wellbeing goals, teamwork suffered, morale dipped and healthy routines became harder to maintain. Dawn Lennie, Health and Wellbeing Lead at the DHSC knew the team needed an easy and accessible way to get people taking, moving and making positive lifestyle changes.
