Our Community Prayer for the Week

What if you thought of it as the Jews consider the Sabbath— Cease from travel. Cease from buying and selling. Give up, just for now, on trying to make the world different than it is. Sing. Pray. Touch only those to whom you commit your life. Center down. And when your body has become still, reach out with your heart. Know that we are connected in ways that are terrifying and beautiful.

Know that our lives are in one another’s hands.

Do not reach out your hands. Reach out your heart. Reach out your words. Reach out all the tendrils of compassion that move, invisibly, where we cannot touch. Promise this world your love— for better or for worse, in sickness and in health, so long as we all shall live.

Pandemic, by Lynn Ungar

Translation: Come, my friend, to meet the bride; let us welcome the Sabbath. “Observe” and “Remember,” in a single command, the One God announced to us. The Lord is One, and his name is One, for fame, for glory and for praise. Come, my friend, to meet the bride; let us welcome the Sabbath. Come, let us go to meet the Sabbath, for it is a source of blessing. From the very beginning it was ordained; last in creation, first in God’s plan. Come, my friend, to meet the bride; let us welcome the Sabbath. Shrine of the King, royal city, arise! Come forth from thy ruins. Long enough have you dwelt in the vale of tears! He will show you abundant mercy. Come, my friend, to meet the bride; let us welcome the Sabbath. Shake off your dust, arise! Put on your glorious garments, my people, and pray: “ Be near to my soul, and redeem it through the son of Jesse, the Bethlehemite.” Come, my friend, to meet the bride; let us welcome the Sabbath. Bestir yourself, bestir yourself, for your light has come; arise and shine! Awake, awake, utter a song; the Lord’s glory is revealed upon you. Come, my friend, to meet the bride; let us welcome the Sabbath. Be not ashamed nor confounded. Why are you downcast? Why do you moan? The afflicted of my people will be sheltered within you; the city shall be rebuilt on its ancient site. Come, my friend, to meet the bride; let us welcome the Sabbath. Those who despoiled you shall become a spoil, and all who would devour you shall be far away. Your God will rejoice over you as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride. Come, my friend, to meet the bride; let us welcome the Sabbath. You shall extend to the right and to the left, and you shall revere the Lord. Through the advent of a descendant of Perez we shall rejoice and exult. Come, my friend, to meet the bride; let us welcome the Sabbath. Come in peace, crown of God, come with joy and cheerfulness; amidst the faithful of the chosen people come O bride; come, O bride. Come, my friend, to meet the bride; let us welcome the Sabbath.

BARECHU

EREV By Rabbi Annie Lewis Ha-Ma’ariv Aravim. God who brings evenings, You are the Master of transitions the Artist of Ma’avarim, and we, Your people, we are called Ivrim, those who pass from one place to the next, who travel to the edge who seek You in the in-between, We and You, forever becoming, rolling dusk into twilight and darkness into dawn. As you preside over time the sun rises up and bows low, the moon stretches out and curls in, our bodies wax and wane.

Everything is on the move. Particles flip and twirl. Light floods in and fades away. You offer us sparks of holy time, soul and space.

When Shabbat comes in stillness, we breathe. We are whole. We are here.

Recite them when you stay at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you get up. Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them serve as a symbol on your forehead; inscribe them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

PRAYER FOR THE GOVERNMENT

Our God and God of our ancestors: Accept with mercy our prayer for our land and its government. Pour out your blessing on this land, on its President, judges, officers and officials, who work faithfully for the public good. Teach them from the laws of Your Torah, enlighten them with the rules of Your justice, so that peace, tranquility, happiness and freedom will never depart from our land. God of all that lives, please bestow Your spirit on all the inhabitants of our land, and plant love, fellowship, peace and friendship between the different communities and faiths that dwell here. Uproot from their hearts all hate, animosity, jealousy and strife, in order to fulfil the longings of its people, who aspire for its dignity, and desire to see it as a light for all nations. And so may it be God's will that our land be a blessing for all who live on earth, and that fellowship and liberty will dwell between them. Establish soon the vision of your prophet: “Nation will not raise a sword against nation, and they will no longer learn war,” and, as it is said: “for all of them will know Me, from the smallest to the greatest.” (Amen)
