Endless thanks to those teachers and students who represented us at Te Papa-o-Rotu poukai this week. It was a great day and important that we were a part of it. Many thanks again to our key organisers Matua Greg, Whaea Mere, Whaea Michelle and Whaea Aroha. Also, acknowledgements must go to staff who remained at school to look after classes.

NZQA Top Scholar – Te Reo Māori 2017’s Manukura Wahine, Ruamano Te Koi, gained the top Scholarship Te Reo Māori examination mark in the external examinations last year. She will be recognised at a special awards ceremony at Parliament, in Wellington, in May.

Student ID card Please ensure that your child’s student ID card has been issued. The $10.00 charge can be paid at the office.

School Photo’s The photo’s are scheduled for Tues 5 June 2018. All students are required to wear their number 1’s (formal wear).

Mobile Dental Unit Raukura Hauora O Tainui is a Health provider servicing the areas of Hamilton and the Greater Waikato region. The Mobile Dental Unit will be at kura from Monday 30 April to Friday 25 May 2018. A consent form was emailed to all whanau on 9 April 2018. Please ensure you follow the instructions on the email if you want your child to be seen by the someone from the Mobile Dental Unit during the above dates. This term our main focus has been on whanaungatanga but we aim to acknowledge students who are upholding our values wherever possible. This is something you can also do at home whānau. Ask your child/children about our school values – what they are, what they mean to them and what they look like at our Wharekura.

Kākahu-ā-kura / Uniform Do you have uniform you could donate? Whānau, if you have any uniform that your child, or children, have grown out of – or perhaps they’ve left home – please feel free to bring this into the school office and we will make this available to others. This is not an offer to purchase uniform that is surplus to your requirements, but an offer to make pre-loved uniform available to others. Correct uniform E mihi ana ki a koutou e te whānau. Koutou e kaha tautoko nei i tēnei tikanga o tātou. Many thanks to those whānau who work hard to support our kaupapa and ensure that our students are in correct uniform. We still have too many girls wearing black skirts with their day uniform. Students can get a 2-day uniform pass to allow time for repairs/cleaning or purchase of uniform. A note does not act as a pass for an indefinite period of time. Footwear Please ensure students have appropriate footwear for the coming cooler months as well as the correct jacket and jersey. If you have any enquiries about second-hand uniform items that may be available, please contact the office.

Hākinakina / Sport

Poitukohu – Te Tuaio Rautangata – NZ U17 basketball representative Kei te tamarahi pariri, kei te rau o tītapu, Aio, nei mātou e mihi ana. Ko koe tēnā e whakatinana ana i a PoUtuWhaKaAro e hoa. Kua eke koe ki te karamatamata o tāu i wawata ai. E mihi ana. Aio has truly excelled within the key passion in his life – basketball. He played in the New Zealand Under 17 Basketball team that competed in the FIBA U16 Asian Championship* this month. They placed third and Aio will now go on to compete in the FIBA U17 World Cup in Argentina from 30 June-8 July. *New Zealand’s and FIBA’s terminology is different - FIBA’s Under 16s means 16 years old and younger, which is the equivalent of New Zealand’s Under 17s.

Kākahu Hākinakina /PE Uniform It is compulsory for all students to wear the PE uniform for activities like Oranga Tinana, Hauora & off-site representing Nga Taiatea at sporting competitions (for example Monday night touch). Students who consistently do not wear the correct PE uniform receive whakawhiu (detention). Please note: A pānui with an explanation about why students do not have the correct uniform must be provided for the teacher in each class, every day that incorrect uniform is worn. A single note from a parent or caregiver will not cover the student for the whole term.

Takere Hapori / Careers

Congratulations to Hani Prentice who was successful in applying for the University of Otago On Campus Experience (OCE). The On Campus Experience is a programme that enables a group of Year 13 Māori students to travel to the University of Otago, from 6 - 10 May 2018, to experience what it is like to live and learn in Dunedin. All successful applicants were selected based on their all-round academic ability, their attitude to learning, a character reference from the school, and an essay highlighting their involvement in their school and Māori community, as well as their aspirations to attend The University of Otago. Mahinga Wheako All Tau 12/13 and some Y11 will be doing their 3 day Work Experience placement in week 5 of term 2 – 30 May to 1st June. This is their opportunity to experience the real world of work and explore career ideas they may be keen on. It is up to each tauira to find their own work placement, and during the school holidays they will need to spend some time arranging this, and getting the contact details of their Mentor in the workforce to hand to their Kaiarahi and getting their Agreement Forms signed by the Mentor and their Whanau. If you are keen to be a workplace mentor for one of our tauira then please send your detail to our Kaihautu Takere Hapori Whaea at mel.veituna@taiatea.school.nz Work Experience Congratulations to the 12 tuakana who have been accepted to do work placements for 10 days in Term 2 at the DHB, QMS Builders, Countdown, The Warehouse and Warehouse Stationery. These will not only help them with knowledge of the workplace, but they can also gain credits for what they learn. Drivers Licence Courses RESTRICTED – 10 Tuakana will be doing a Restricted drivers licence on May 11th here at kura, then their tests will be booked for future dates. This course is full but depending on the success there may be another here at kura later in the year. This will cost each student $80 or less if they are registered with Tainui.

LEARNERS – Western Community Centre run a drivers licence course for 4 days in the July school holidays – Kura will pay for the course but whanau will need to pay to sit the licence (Half price if they are registered with Tainui). Tauira to register with Whaea Mel

We're inviting kura from across the Waikato region to attend the Techweek 2018 Maaori Showcase being held May

21 at Wintec, Kirikiriroa, 4pm - 7.30pm. It is an exciting showcase that will exhibit some of the latest technologies

and some of our leading Maaori experts, products and services. Get your tamariki there to inspire them to be

innovative with technology and to see what future career pathways they could potentially see entering. Its

guaranteed to be a fun, entertaining and interactive, a showcase for everyone to attend. To register your interest

Speakers include:

Taaniko Nordstrom. Six years ago Taaniko Nordstrom took some photos on her iPad of herself dressed up in a

mixture of traditional Māori and colonial clothing. It turned out to be the genesis of Soldiers Rd Portraits, a company

she set up with her sister-in-law creating portraits of people in indigenous dress. Taaniko Nordstrom is the Co-

Founder of Soldiers Road Portraits.

Maru Nihoniho is the founder of Metia Interactive, a game studio based in Auckland, New Zealand established in

2003. They create game assets ranging from 2D illustrations to complex 3D modelling. They are licensed to develop

across multiple platforms from PlayStation to mobile.

Christian-Lee Pogai. 12-year-old Hamilton Boys High School student, Christian, stole the show at Innes 48 business

competition where he competed with his father and cousin with their business concept Marae BnB which was an

idea to invigorate Marae through allowing tourists. His team, Brown and Down boys took home Peoples Choice and

Best Pitch award.

Adele Hauwai. Kirikiriroa (Hamilton) woman Adele Hauwai is the innovator behind SeeCom, a social enterprise

which is developing the world’s first digital interactive sign language game.

Kawana Wallace. A group of Huntly lads are developing digital tools for millennials to learn te reo Māori. His

business, myReo, is creating a series of bilingual digital games and software targeted at schoolaged students but

accessible to everyone. Subject matters include math, history, mythology, programming, data sorting and artificial

intelligence.

Lee Timutimu. CEO and Founder of Arataki Trail Tours. selfguided fully immersive cultural walking experience. Our

proximity storytelling product seamlessly connects users with authentic cultural content and information, at the

right time, in the right location.

Kodee Ngatai is founder of Jacal-B an ondemand Artificial Intelligence athlete development team. This platform is

aimed at helping athletes access high performance training at the touch of the button.

How do I get the ‘NGA TAIATEA WHAREKURA’ school app on my phone?

1. Go to the ‘App Store’ on your phone

2. Search ‘Nga Taiatea Wharekura’

3. Click on ‘Nga Taiatea Wharekura’

4. Click on GET

5. If you have a password on your device you will be required to put this on otherwise you will automatically

download the Nga Taiatea Wharekura (uses your data)

6. Open the app

7. You will be asked whether you are a student / parent / teacher – choose the relevant category

8. You will generate an email automatically, which requests us to send you an email with a username &

password.

9. Enter this information into the app, and you are ready

10. Have a look around in the app – go to your menu – you can choose the alerts you receive ie: Kapa haka,Tu

taua, Poitarawhiti, Poitukohu etc……………

This phone APP will allow whānau to have access to pānui, information regarding your child, key dates etc through

your phones. It will also enable teachers and coaches to send out notifications to whānau and the students in

regards to classes at school, sports teams and other groups within the school. It will also enable whānau to

communicate with the school through the APP if your child is going to be absent. This APP will be our main channel

of communication to whānau.
