Initial Construction Activities

• Clearing, grubbing, excavation, backfill, grading, and dewatering

• Install temporary and permanent access roads and drainage features

• Install temporary facilities – office trailers, change shacks, underground electrical, water, fiber, laydown areas, and concrete batch plant

• Set up site security – guard houses, fences, access gates, badging facilities, etc.

• Build warehouses, offices, and Training/Simulator Building

• Relocate 500 kv transmission line interferences

1ST Nuclear Concrete

• Nuclear Island Basemat is the foundation for the Reactor Containment Building and the Reactor Auxiliary Building and is the first safety related concrete placement

• Nuclear Island Basemat is six (6) foot thick and contains over 6800 cubic yards of concrete

• This placement of concrete was rehearsed during a 1/6 size “mock-up” in September 2012 to ensure a successful continuous pour

• The actual placement was delayed several months due to rebar discrepancies in the design and final resolution with the NRC

• In March 2013 the full size Nuclear Island Basemat was placed successfully in approximately 51 hours

Some of the Facts

• Over 22 million cubic yards of earth were moved during excavation and backfill while preparing the site for construction

• The Nuclear Island area was excavated to a depth of approximately 80 ft to remove unsuitable marl material and replaced with Class I backfill

• The 70,000 square foot Simulator/Training Center took 1 year to complete and currently houses all operator training activities

• The 13 story Modular Assembly Building is over 300 ft long and is where structural modules are assembled and loaded on heavy haul transporters for moving to the appropriate plant location

• There are 23,000 tons of steel, 16M feet of cable, and 546,00 ft of piping associated with the two units

• There are currently over 2200 workers on site and the peak workforce will be around 5000
