BIRD BRAIN MAY HELP DRONES FLY BETTER Studying birds in flight may aid in the design of navigation and guidance systems for

autonomous drones, particularly a fleet of drones moving at the same time. Birds fly

through complex environments at high speed but rarely collide. Drones should be able

to fly without human interference and not crash into one another or obstacles along the

journey.

BARRIERS OF LANGUAGE ON THE INTERNET Language has been a pain issue for getting billions more connected to the internet. Just 10

languages account for 80% of web content with English as the dominant medium but less

than 21% of the world’s population grasp a basic understanding of English. Challenge for

giants like Google and Facebook is the building of digital infrastructures that allow creation

of localised content. As succinctly stated by the writer, “speakers of the other 6,990

languages need something to do when they come online”.

THE JEWELLERY OF THE FUTURE? The creators of Neclumi, a projection-based interactive necklace, is

certain projection-based jewellery and wearable devices could be

our adornment of the future. Remains to be seen if humans can give

up precious metals and gems for light. All that glitter may not be

gold.

REBIRTH OF PAPER BOOKS E-readers and other formats of digital access seem to have rendered the

printed reading material obsolete. Technology however, has produced

electric ink and other innovations that can breathe new life into physical

books. Turning the pages of a good read could become a whole-new

interactive experience very soon. Don’t write off paper books so soon.

GENES-CONTROL WITH MIND POWER Humans controlling biological functions with brain-waves is now a real area of

scientific development. Researchers have successfully created a link between

thoughts and cells, enabling humans to switch on genes in mice with their

thoughts. The possibilities from hereon are honestly, very scary.

FUTURE SMART CITY FOR EVERYDAY PEOPLE What do everyday folks need in cities of the future? While blueprints are drawn by governments

and large corporations, most citizens whom will eventually live daily lives in these environments

are disconnected from the visions. The average person is skeptical about changes that

technologies of smart cities would bring to their lives socially and economically, or if it would

relieve infrastructures under strain. Engaging citizens in the making of smart cities is imperative.

Balancing needs of everyday people with business and innovation has to be a principle as

high-tech cities of our future could widen social and economic gaps.
