Is stress ever a problem for you?So many folks I know are all “stressed up and

nowhere to go.” They’re frazzled and frenzied, harried and hurried. Sometimes it seems it’salmost wrong to be calm and content.

I heard of a woman who called her pastor andsaid, “Pastor, I tried to call you all day Monday, and I couldn’t get you.”

“Well,” he said, “Monday’s my day off. I wasresting.”

She said, “The devil never takes time off.” “Yes,” the pastor said, “and if I didn’t, I’d be just

like the devil."

THE SHEPHERD’SANSWER TO STRESS

ALL, LIKE SHEEP...

Do you know why we are stressed? It’s because weare like sheep. Psalm 100:3 says, “...we are Hispeople, and the sheep of His pasture.” That ishow God describes us.

You say, “Isn’t that wonderful! I’m a sheep.” ButGod wasn’t necessarily trying to compliment us.He was trying to show us a few things about ourselves so that we would understand howmuch we need Him.

SHEEP ARE NOT INTELLIGENT

As I began to study about sheep, I becameimpressed with the fact that a sheep is not thesmartest animal around. How many times haveyou gone to the circus and seen trained sheep? There are horses, lions, tigers, and even pigs; butno sheep. The simple truth is that sheep are really not very intelligent.

You may say, “Hey, I’m pretty smart. As a matter of fact, I graduated at the top of my class.”Let me explain that I am talking now in spiritualterms.

Nicodemus, for example, was a very intelligentPharisee. Yet Jesus had to say to him, “Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?” (John 3:10). You see, Nicodemus wasintellectually brilliant but spiritually ignorant.

4

Page 6: K116 COVER 012011 The Shepherd's Answer to Stress 6/26 ...Sheep are dependent. In his book, A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23, author Phillip Keller says that sheep can sometimes become

Paul said it best in Romans 3:11: “There is nonethat understandeth...” In the spiritual realm, weare all like sheep.

SHEEP NEED TO BE DEFENDED

Horses can run, mules can kick, and lions canbite. Tigers can claw, bears can crush, skunkscan—we know what they can do!—and snakescan strike.

But sheep can’t fight. They can’t run. They have relatively weak muscles, poor eyesight, andlousy hearing. They’re pretty defenseless. Whenthe Bible speaks of lambs, it speaks of them asheaded toward slaughter.

Because this is true, sheep need someone to defend them. And so do we. That’s why theapostle Paul said, “...our sufficiency is of God”(2 Corinthians 3:5); that is, we don’t have sufficiency in and of ourselves.

SHEEP NEED TO BE LED

On top of everything else, sheep are easily lost.Isaiah said, “All we like sheep have gone astray...”(53:6). A sheep will browse here, nibble there, browse here, nibble there. And all the while, thesheep gets farther and farther away from theflock, from the fold, and from the shepherd. Andit doesn’t even realize it. Before the sheep knowsit, he’s lost.

Cows come back to the barn, and horses comeback to the stable. Did you ever try to get rid of acat? It comes home. You’ve heard of a homingpigeon but never a homing sheep. They don’t

5

come back. They have to be sought. They have tobe brought. That’s just the nature of sheep.

God said in Hosea 11:7, “And My people arebent to backsliding from Me...” Do you knowwhat that means in plain English? It means wehave a tendency to get away from God.

Are you like that? Sure you are. We all are. Weeven sing about it. “Prone to wander, Lord, I feelit. Prone to leave the God I love.” That's the sheepnature in all of us.

SHEEP NEED TO BE CARED FOR

Sheep are dependent. In his book, A ShepherdLooks at Psalm 23, author Phillip Keller says that sheep can sometimes become cast. Thathappens when a sheep rolls over on its back andcan’t get up. Its hoofs are sticking up in the air,and it doesn’t have enough athletic ability anddexterity to roll over and get up.

In that position, a sheep is vulnerable to vultures and wolves. To make matters worse, gasses begin to build up inside the sheep, and itgets bloated. Before long, its circulation is cut off;and the cast sheep dies.

The only hope for a cast sheep is for the shepherd to come and pick it up, massage the circulation back into its limbs, throw it over hisshoulder, and carry it back to the fold. Has yourShepherd ever done that for you when you weredown and couldn’t get up? Thank God for theShepherd!

JESUS OUR SHEPHERD

We’re all familiar with the opening verses ofPsalm 23: “The LORD is my Shepherd; I shall notwant. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters”(vv. 1-2).

Sheep in the Middle East wake up, browse, andbegin grazing about 4:00 in the morning wheneverything is peaceful and quiet. While therefreshing dew is still on the grass, the shepherdleads them out of the sheepfold. By 10:00 or 11:00the sun has risen, and it is hot. So the shepherdlooks for a shady, grassy place where his sheepcan lie down for several hours.

Do you know what a sheep is doing when it liesdown? It is chewing the cud. A sheep has a second stomach. It puts that sweet grass, clover, and alfalfa down there in its second stomach. Then the shepherd says, “Now, lie down anddigest what you’ve got.”

So the sheep brings that grass back up andbegins to chew on it and taste it. This is the timewhen the sheep is growing. This is a sheep’s mostproductive time—a quiet time, a time of serenity.

If that green grass is the Word of God, what isthe sheep doing when it is chewing the cud?Meditating, David said,

Blessed is the man that walketh not in thecounsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the

7

way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of thescornful. But his delight is in the law of theLORD; and in His law doth he meditate dayand night. (Psalm 1:1-2)

David meditated, ruminated on God’s law, dayand night. And in Psalm 119:98-104, he listed the results. God’s law made him wiser than hisenemies, gave him more understanding than histeachers and elders, kept his feet from every evilway, and taught him to hate every false way.

Consider some other Psalms which exhort usto mediate on God’s Word:

Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable inThy sight, O LORD, my Strength, and myRedeemer. (Psalm 19:14)

My meditation of Him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the LORD. (Psalm 104:34)

I will meditate in Thy precepts, and haverespect unto Thy ways. (Psalm 119:15)

Do you know what is wrong with most of us? We don’t lie down in the green grass and meditate. Even those of us who study the Word ofGod don’t spend enough time really digestingand assimilating what God has given us.

Many people think they have done God a wildfavor if they get to church on Sunday! And if theycan halfway understand what the pastor is saying, that’s fine.

When you get home from church, do you really meditate on what you have heard? Whenyou study God’s Word, do you really have a quiettime? Do you keep a spiritual journal where you

8

Page 10: K116 COVER 012011 The Shepherd's Answer to Stress 6/26 ...Sheep are dependent. In his book, A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23, author Phillip Keller says that sheep can sometimes become

write down the thoughts God gives you? Let meencourage you to take the time to meditate onthe Word.

Many of the things that I preach are things thatGod gives me while I am thinking about theScripture I have just read. I’m often asked, “Howcan I know what is in the Word of God? Where doyou get your insights?”

One way is to sit back and meditate. And if youexpect God to give you something, then youought to have a pen or pencil ready to write itdown in your spiritual journal.

But some people are too busy to do that.Frankly, if you’re too busy to read the Word, meditate on it, and record what the Spirit revealsto you about it; you’re just too busy, period! If thisdescribes your life, you’re missing the life Jesuspromised when He said in John 10:10: “...I amcome that they might have life, and that theymight have it more abundantly.”

Sometimes I hear people advise others, “Makeall the money you can, just so you make it honestly.” That’s bad advice. If you are reallygoing to do that, you’ll be out making moneywhen you ought to be doing something else. Youare going to be making money when you ought tobe quiet and alone with God.

I read in the newspaper recently about a fighter plane that was going so fast that when itfired its gun, the plane overtook the shell andshot itself down! I had to reread that. The planeliterally shot itself down.

A lot of people I know are doing the samething. They don’t take time to slow down, to bestill and know that God is God, to enjoy serenity, and to be quiet. It is not a sin to be quiet. On thecontrary, God’s Word says, “...In quietness and inconfidence shall be your strength...” (Isaiah

9

30:15). And the psalmist advised us, “Be still, andknow that I am God...” (Psalm 46:10).

David said, “He maketh me to lie down.”Whenyou read that verse, you can put the emphasis inone of two places: on the lie down or on themaketh. I believe God loves us so much that, if wewon’t lie down, He’ll make us lie down.

David once said, “Before I was afflicted I wentastray...” (Psalm 119:67). Later on, in verse 71, wesee that David learned a valuable lesson from hisaffliction. He said, “It is good for me that I havebeen afflicted...,” because it made him stop, think about God, and turn back to Him. Godalways gives us the freedom to choose. We cantake the time, or we can let God make the time.Personally, I’d rather say, “Never mind, Lord, Youdon’t have to afflict me. I’ll slow down. I’ll be still.I want to know that You are God.”

To learn about the nature of stress, we havebeen looking at the nature of sheep. To learn howto deal with stress, we need to look at the natureof the Shepherd.

10

Page 12: K116 COVER 012011 The Shepherd's Answer to Stress 6/26 ...Sheep are dependent. In his book, A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23, author Phillip Keller says that sheep can sometimes become

WHO IS THIS SHEPHERD?

Jesus is not just the Shepherd; He is the GoodShepherd, the Great Shepherd, the ChiefShepherd. Peter said cast “all your care uponHim; for He careth for you” (1 Peter 5:7). OurShepherd is Jesus, the Jehovah of the OldTestament. He is the One Who makes us to liedown in green pastures and leads us beside thestill waters. And because of Who He is, we havesecurity.

OUR SHEPHERD IS COMPASSIONATE

Matthew 9:35-36 says,

And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, andpreaching the gospel of the kingdom, andhealing every sickness and every diseaseamong the people. But when He saw themultitudes, He was moved with compas-sion on them, because they fainted, andwere scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.

When Jesus saw the people of His day, He sawthem scattered, running frantically here andthere, paling, fainting, complaining, and full ofstress. And “He was moved with compassion.”

11

Page 13: K116 COVER 012011 The Shepherd's Answer to Stress 6/26 ...Sheep are dependent. In his book, A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23, author Phillip Keller says that sheep can sometimes become

The word moved in the Greek language is verypowerful, meaning literally “to convulse.” Andthe word compassion means “to feel or to sufferwith passion.” Jesus was convulsed as He suffered for the shepherdless sheep.

OUR SHEPHERD CARES

Isaiah 40:11 is one of the most beautiful versesin the Bible: “He shall feed His flock like aShepherd: He shall gather the lambs with Hisarm, and carry them in His bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.”

Aren’t you glad the Lord is so tender with us?Aren’t you grateful that He gives us what we needand not what we deserve? Has He ever carriedyou in His bosom?

Baby Christians are lambs. Some of them havecome out of almost sheer paganism. They knownothing about church. They’re just babes whocome and give their heart to Jesus. And, insteadof putting these little lambs through a theologicaltest, slapping their hands every time they reachout to touch, and chastising them when they fail;Jesus picks them up, puts them in His bosom, and carries them. He carried me when I was a little lamb. If He hadn’t, I never would have madeit. He didn’t just say, “Root, hog, or die!” He is acompassionate and caring Shepherd.

OUR SHEPHERD IS COURAGEOUS

In John 10:11-12, right after Jesus said, “I amthe good Shepherd,” He said something equallyas wonderful:

12

Page 14: K116 COVER 012011 The Shepherd's Answer to Stress 6/26 ...Sheep are dependent. In his book, A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23, author Phillip Keller says that sheep can sometimes become

the good Shepherd giveth His life for thesheep. But he that is an hireling, and not theshepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth thesheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheththem, and scattereth the sheep.

There were many dangers for the sheep inthose days. There were lions, wolves, and bears. There were thieves who would steal and slaughter the sheep. There were wild dogs andscavengers. When these predators came for thesheep, a hired man would run for his life. But theman who owned his own sheep, stayed andfought—even if it cost him his life. David gave usa vivid picture of that kind of courage when hetold King Saul,

...Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, andthere came a lion, and a bear, and took alamb out of the flock: And I went out afterhim, and smote him, and delivered it out ofhis mouth: and when he arose against me, Icaught him by his beard, and smote him,and slew him. (1 Samuel 17:34-35)

Although you may be weak like a sheep, youhave a compassionate, caring, and courageousShepherd Who has already sacrificed His life foryou, is risen from the dead, and “ever liveth tomake intercession” for you (Hebrews 7:25).

That means Jesus is always concerned aboutyou, always seeing to your needs, and alwaysfighting on your behalf. “My sheep hear Myvoice, and I know them, and they follow Me: AndI give unto them eternal life; and they shallnever perish, neither shall any man pluck themout of My hand” (John 10:27-28).

NO PLACE FOR STRESS

If our Shepherd is all these things to us, stressshould have no power over us. Stress is nothingbut the physical effect of worry on our bodies.

HE IS OUR SECURITY

Because He maketh me and leadeth me, I amsecure. I may be weak like a sheep, but He is thestrong Shepherd; and His “strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore,”Paul says, “will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me”(2 Corinthians 12:9). This is rock-solid securitythat God’s limitless strength is present in myweakness.

HE IS OUR SUFFICIENCY

Our Shepherd says we are not to worry(Matthew 6:25-34). He mentioned two thingsspecifically. He said we should not worry aboutwhat we’re going to eat—that’s food. And weshould not worry about what we’re going towear—that’s fashion. We can add at least fourmore “F”s to that: friends, fame, fortune, and fitness.

14

Page 16: K116 COVER 012011 The Shepherd's Answer to Stress 6/26 ...Sheep are dependent. In his book, A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23, author Phillip Keller says that sheep can sometimes become

Jesus said these are the things Gentiles(unsaved people) seek. He did not say thesethings are unimportant. He said, “seek ye firstthe kingdom of God, and His righteousness; andall these things shall be added unto you”(Matthew 6:33; emphasis mine). “These things”are the six F’s. But we have much deeper needsthan these. There are spiritual needs that, leftunmet, lead to eternal death.

Psalm 22:26, 29 say “The meek shall eat and besatisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seekHim...All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship...” God wants healthy sheep. He’sspeaking of the green pasture of His word and thestill waters of His Spirit.

First and foremost, we are to find our satisfaction in Him. If we don’t do that, we aregoing to be stressed. “...Man shall not live bybread alone,” Jesus said, “but by every word thatproceedeth out of the mouth of God” (Matthew4:4). The Bible is to our spirits what bread is to thenatural man.“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst

after righteousness: for they shall be filled,”Jesus said (Matthew 5:6). The word blessed is aGreek word which literally means “happy or sat-isfied, content, to be congratulated, joyful.” Howmany people do you know today who are hun-gering and thirsting after righteousness—theg r e e n pastures of His Word, the still waters of His Spirit?

HE IS OUR SERENITY

The most unhappy people in the world arepeople who are trying to be happy. The next timeyou go on vacation, just look at the faces of the

15

Page 17: K116 COVER 012011 The Shepherd's Answer to Stress 6/26 ...Sheep are dependent. In his book, A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23, author Phillip Keller says that sheep can sometimes become

people around you. There is often a lot morestress at the beach than there is at the office. Wecannot beat stress by changing our location; wehave to change our vocation. When we live andwork for Jesus, our yoke is easy and our burden islight. There’s no stress.

Happiness is something you never find bylooking for it. Happiness is something you stumble over on your way to serve Jesus. Godloves us so much that He designed us to be miserable without Jesus. That’s what He meantwhen He said to Adam and Eve as they left theGarden of Eden, “...cursed is the ground for thysake...” (Genesis 3:17). Notice that He did not saythat the ground was cursed for your judgment, but for your sake.

God cursed the ground. “Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee...” (Genesis3:18). God wants your path to be thorny. Heknows that the worst thing that could happen tosinful man would be to live in paradise with a diseased heart because he would never knowanything was wrong. So God gives us thorns andthistles and heartaches so that we’ll say, “There’ssomething wrong in this world; I need Jesus.”

Seek after God and His righteousness, and youwill be happy. Seek Him and His righteousness, and you have overcome stress.

CONCLUSION

When I was in Florida about twenty years ago, Iheard the great S. M. Lockridge preach on theLordship of Christ. He began to quote theTwenty-third Psalm. “The LORD is...,” and hestopped. He focused in on that little word, is.

“The Lord always has been is, and the Lordalways will be is,” he said. He was talking aboutthe eternality, the unchangeability of our greatGod. “You can’t keep your tenses straight whenyou talk about God,” Brother Lockridge said.

And you can’t keep your stress when you meditate on Him. There’s no stress when you relyon Him. There’s no stress when you trust in Him.There’s no stress when you are quiet and knowthat He is God.

Look at the big picture for a moment. Stepback from Psalm 23 and take in the view toinclude Psalms 22 and 24. In Psalm 22, we see theGood Shepherd dying for His sheep. He ismocked by His enemies. They drive nails throughHis hands and feet. Soldiers cast lots for Hisclothes. In Psalm 23, we have seen the GoodShepherd leading His sheep. And, in Psalm 24, wesee the Good Shepherd coming for His sheep inglory. “The earth is the LORD’S,” David declares,“and the fulness thereof; the world, and theythat dwell therein”(v. 1). Jesus is in absolute con-trol of everything, everyone, always.

17

Page 19: K116 COVER 012011 The Shepherd's Answer to Stress 6/26 ...Sheep are dependent. In his book, A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23, author Phillip Keller says that sheep can sometimes become

Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in His holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousnessfrom the God of his salvation” (Psalm 24:3-5).

Our provision is assured.“Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift

up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of gloryshall come in. Who is this King of glory? TheLORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in bat-tle” (Psalm 24:7-8). What battle are you fightingthat the Lord cannot and will not win for you? What is before you that threatens you that theLord will not deal with? What foe is more power-ful than the Lord of hosts?

Step back from your troubles. Set your eyes onyour Great Shepherd. Listen to His words. Believethem. Set your mind on them. Meditate on themday and night.

Then your stress will melt like wax. It will flee, too weak to stand before such an awesome God.

CLOSING PLEA

My friend, have you given your life to the Lord? Do youhave the assurance that if you were to die right now,you would go straight to heaven? If not, please let metell you how you can be saved.

ADMIT YOUR SINFirst, you must understand that you are a sinner.

The Bible says, “For all have sinned, and come short ofthe glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

ABANDON SELF-EFFORTSecond, you must understand that you cannot save

yourself by your efforts. The Bible is very clear that it’s“not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the HolyGhost” (Titus 3:5). Again, “For by grace are ye savedthrough faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift ofGod: Not of works, lest any man should boast”(Ephesians 2:8-9).

ACKNOWLEDGE CHRIST’S PAYMENT

Third, you must believe that Jesus Christ, the Son ofGod, died for your sins. The Bible says, “But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while wewere yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). Thatmeans He died in your place. Your sin debt has beenpaid by the blood of Jesus Christ, which “cleanseth usfrom all sin” (1 John 1:7b).

19

Page 21: K116 COVER 012011 The Shepherd's Answer to Stress 6/26 ...Sheep are dependent. In his book, A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23, author Phillip Keller says that sheep can sometimes become

20

ACCEPT HIM AS SAVIORFourth, you must put your faith in Jesus Christ and

Him alone for your salvation. The blood of Christ doesyou no good until you receive Him by faith. The Biblesays, “...Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thoushalt be saved...” (Acts 16:31).

Have you ever taken this all-important step of faith? If not, I urge you to do it right now. Why? Because Jesusis the only way to heaven!

And speaking of Jesus, the Apostle Peter said in Acts4:12, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for thereis none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”

Jesus Himself said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and theLife: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me” (John14:6). It couldn’t be any clearer than that.

Are you willing to offer the following prayer to Godtoday?

O God, I’m a sinner, I’m lost, and I need to besaved. I know I can’t save myself, so right now, onceand for all, I trust You to save me. Come into myheart, forgive my sin, and make me Your child. Igive You my life. I will live for You as You give mestrength.

If you will make this your heartfelt prayer, God willhear and save you! Jesus has promised that He will notturn away anyone who comes to Him in faith (see John6:37). He will make you a child of God if you will turnto Him (see John 1:12).
