REPORT ON PUSHKARALU 2016

Pushkaram is an Indian festival dedicated to worshiping rivers. It is also

known as Pushkaralu, Pushkara or Pushkar. It is celebrated at shrines along the banks

of 12 major sacred rivers in India, in the form of ancestor worship, spiritual discourses,

devotional music and cultural programs. The celebration happens annually, once in 12

years along each river. Each river is associated with a zodiac sign, and the river for

each year's festival is based on which sign Jupiter is in at the time. Due to regional

variations, some of the zodiac signs are associated with multiple rivers.

Krishna Pushkaralu is a festival of River Krishna which normally occurs, at

the time of entry of Jupiter into Virgo (Kanya rasi). In 2016, this occurred from 12th

August to 23rd

August. As a contribution to these Krishna pushkaras, Velagapudi

Ramakrishna Siddhartha Engineering College (VRSEC) has conducted various service

activities.

The flow of these activities started from 27th

July 2016, with Slogan ‘Transform

Vijayawada’ to clean the walls of Vijayawada for upcoming pushkar festival. This

event is initiated by the call of Honorable Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Sri Nara

Chandra Babu Naidu Garu, for thousands of young people on a mission to transform

Vijayawada, into a poster-free, clean city for the festival. For this event nearly 200

students of our college, along with the students of other colleges energetically

participated in cleaning and painting the walls of Vijayawada along the M.G. Road

under the supervision of MARGAM society, there by decorating the new capital of

Andhra Pradesh, for welcoming all the pilgrims for upcoming 12 day festival.

Pushkar is a time where millions of people get together in a single place. In

order to prevent accidents and face untoward incidents, we planned a blood donation

camp which was Organised by NSS Unit of our College in association with Red Cross

Blood Bank, Vijayawada on 3rd

August 2016,at VRSEC, Kanuru. In this camp 150

students of our college actively took part by donating their blood. Blood thus collected

has been used for pilgrims, who attended Krishna Pushkaralu 2016, and 200 students

known their blood group, who are kept aside for pushkar time emergency cases.

On the same day, Commissioner of Police, Vijayawada Mr. Goutam Sawang

organized a meeting for Pushkar volunteers at Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium, to

enlighten the volunteers regarding Do’s and Don’ts during Pushkar, and clearly

explained the students how to guide the pilgrims and bypass all kinds of ambiguities



that may arise among the public, so that we can control the flow of crowd near Ghats as

well as in city. Many of our students attended this meeting and got inspired by the

words of the commissioner. As a response to that nearly 555 students enrolled under

police department as “PUSHKAR SEVAKS”. Apart from students, everyday 10

faculty members were deputed to monitor the volunteers along with NSS Programme

Officer. In response to the request from Akshayapatra foundation for some physical

contribution from College students, as a helping arms 89 students of our College

registered themselves as a Pushkar volunteers under the supervision of Akshayapatra

Foundation.

Later on government of AndhraPradesh made elaborate arrangements to

distribute free food to over 1 lakh devotees every day during the Pushkaram in

association with Akshayapatra Foundation. As a helping hand for the cause, the NSS

Unit of our College collected an amount of Rs.1,14,911.00from staff and students and

donated the same to Akshayapatra foundation on 10th

August 2016. This concludes the

pre-Pushkar arrangements.

During Pushkaras students who got enrolled as a Pushkar volunteers provided

their valuable services under the supervision of both police department and

Akshayapatra foundation. In the wing of police department their services are extended

to controlling the flow of crowd near ghats and Durga temple, helping old and

handicapped people to take Pushkar bathe by carrying them on wheel chairs,

distributing water packets, tagging small children and old people with their details so as

to take care that, they don’t skip from their relatives/parents and in the evenings helping

priests for Srivari Pooja near Padmavathi and Krishnaveni Ghat and soon. Along with

volunteering work, students shared many memories with police department during

Independence Day by distributing Indian flags and Rakhi Pournami (18-8-16) tie

Rakhi’s to Police men. Our students’ contribution extended to serving disabled people

on 20th

August at Punami Ghat as a mesmerizing event with Commissioner of Police as

a special guest.

In the wing of Akshayapatra foundation, students distributed food to nearly 15

lakh people during Pushkaras at various places like Pushkar Nagars, Durga temple etc.,

The group members were fanned out in Durga, Padmavathi,

Punnami and Krishnaveni Ghats in the city,while others were

guiding pilgrims to the nearest bus stations and pushkara nagars,

about 100 students worked for Akshaya Patra Foundation to serve

We came here with our minds tuned to fight all odds to help the

pilgrims even in the most difficult conditions. But the whole

affair is a very smooth one. There are no bottlenecks and

everything seems seamlessly planned. I am fortunate enough to be

It’s the workman ship of the students and staff who worked behalf

of Police Dept. Mostly there are many aspects that are highlighted

like formation of PushkarNagars providing Helplines centers

maintaining strict rules by the public officials in order to maintain

the peaceful nature.
