40K GLOBE: Social Enterprise and Innovation

40K Globe is a one month internship in India, providing

students with the opportunity to work on a Social

Impact Project that will use your skills to address

problems present in rural communities.

40K was established by UTS Alumnus Clary Castrission

OAM.

Clary was accidently turned into a social entrepreneur while he was studying law at UTS. The next step

was supposed to be working at a big law firm until one of his professors told him to get his hands

dirty. After a trip to India, Clary’s life took a complete turn and he set up 40K.

For his work associated with 40K, Clary has received a number of awards including an Order of Australia

(2014) and the Australia-India Friendship Award (2012).

Program Details

The focus of 40K Globe is on Social Impact

Projects. These projects begin with a

critical needs analysis with the local

community to identifying areas of need,

after which work can begin to implement

and test solutions to address the

identified need. Students (known as

Globers) work in a small team of 7-9

people with the guidance and support of

a trained team leader, who has been a

Glober previously. Each project will have

a specific agenda such as water, health,

education, employment, food or other

identified needs.

The project will give you the opportunity

to develop skills in:

Leadership

Team work

Entrepreneurship

Social innovation

Cross Cultural awareness

Accommodation is provided in an

apartment, often located above a

family home or shops. You will share

a room with three others and sleep in

bunk beds. There is electricity (but

expect power cuts!) and running

water. A local Indian meal is cooked

each day for the team.

The Glober house is also the teams’

office and where all the project action

takes place!

“I learnt so much about team work, leadership and

stepping outside my comfort zone. I feel like a different

person because of the many different challenges I faced

and overcame while on the program.”

Ben Peterson, BUiLDer, Autumn 2015
