Things are looking bright for Indian hockey.Yes, we are sad that we missed the BeijingOlympics, but we know single failure is notfinal. Our hockey can bounce back on thestrength of national passion. We have tothink afresh, re-orient priorities, policies andperception on processes and personalities sothat disasters of such nature doesn’t recur.Thankfully, the Indian Olympic Association isseized of the matters. With the IOA at thehelm, it is expected things will move onpurposefully. At Field Hockey Publications,we are coming out with our Hockey YearBook 2008 shortly. It will be totally a domesticaffair. We have also completely re-designedour popular website, stick2hockey.com, witha slew of new features such as playerprofiles, slide shows, newspaper search andmany more.

International hockey year book makes global imprint

With the publication of ‘The InternationalHockey Year Book 2006’, author K.Arumugam makes an importantcontribution to the promotion of sport. Els van Breda Vriesman, President ,Federation Internationale de Hockey (FIH) isa genuine Indian hockey lover. At herinitiative, the FIH is taking firm steps toimprove the lot of Indian hockey. The FIH,together with the International OlympicCommittee (IOC) and the Indian OlympicAssociation has put ‘Promoting IndianHockey Project’ apace last year. As a part ofthe project, legendary player-coach RichardCharlesworth is in India as Technical Advisor.It is desired Ric soon takes over the reigns ofsenior team coaching to give the team themuch needed paradigm push. She is alsoknown for her forthright views on men andmatters. Her strong views on Indian hockeyadministration helped in a big way to weedout undesirable elements from the IndianHockey Federation. In an interview to K.Arumugam, author Hockey Year Book, atKazan she firmly said, “If Indian hockey doesnot come up in my tenure, I will consider it apersonal failure”. 2010 World Cup in India isalso her proposal. India will never have a FIHpresident who is so committed to the welfareof our hockey.

silver at the Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh, a silver lining in the indian sky

India’s development team played superbly inthe 17th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh,Malaysia. Despite losing first two mathches, itwon the next four continuously beforelosingout to the full-pledged Argentina in thefinal on golden goal. India’s penalty cornerbattery of Sandeep Singh (above, right) andDiwakarram rattled their rivals. For the firsttime in 17 years, India defeated Pakistan --another full team in the fray -- in the AzlanCup. The team was trained by Ajay KumarBansal (left ) and his deputy RajeshChauhan. Striker SV Sunil (top, with the ball),was at his best. The team was accorded awarm welcome when returned home.
