The JustWorld International "Adopt a Project" campaign identifies opportunities to support a number of highly successful nutrition, health and hygiene, education, leadership & cultural development programs in the developing countries where JustWorld works to give at risk children a leg up to a brighter future. When you adopt a project, you help JustWorld sustain its long-term goals of giving impoverished children access to opportunities and skills to help break the cycle of poverty. JustWorld International acts as a catalyst for positive change in the developing world by working with well-established local partner organizations to provide basic education, nutrition, health, hygiene, and vocational programs for chi ldren in impoverished communities in Cambodia, Honduras, Guatemala, and Brazil.

Our Mission

In Cambodia, JustWorld partners with the People Improvement Organization (PIO) and its director and CNN Hero Top 10 finalist, Phymean Noun.

In Guatemala, JustWorld works with Los Patojos, a community project founded by Juan Pablo Romero Fuentes, who developed grassroots education and development programs that have transformed a Guatemalan community.

In Honduras, JustWorld supports several local grassroots projects including Angelworks and Compartir in Tegucigalpa, as well as running our own community programs at the Natalie Johnson Center for a JustWorld in Tornabé.

In Brazil, JustWorld partners with Instituto Reaçao, an accredited NGO founded by Brazilian Olympic medalist in judo, Flávio Canto, working in low-income communities of Rio de Janeiro and supporting an after-school literacy program for children.

With the support of our donors, JustWorld built and funds operational costs for two schools in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, serving children in desperately poor communities from kindergarten through ninth grade by providing educational materials, qualified teachers, nutritious meals, health care, and rice allotments for families.

OVERALL PROJECT COSTUSD $218,000 per year

WHOMore than 650 children among the poorest in Cambodia: Over 320 students at Stung Mean Chey, located among remnants of the city’s garbage dump, and more than 330 students at Borey Keila, an urban slum. These communities have no local public schools, and families cannot afford to pay for education. The nutrition programs at these schools are particularly important because these children often have no other source of food.

RESULTSSafe, open-air school buildings with improved spaces for learning, and the inauguration of the new People Improvement Organization school building in 2011; hundreds of healthier, well-nourished children and families; students continuously score above average in national public school exams.

Adopt one of our Education ProgramsHelp us fund a dedicated team of more than 15 qualified teachers for the two government-accredited JustWorld/PIO schools that educate children from among the poorest in Cambodia.

The PIO School Teachers ProgramUSD $40,000 per year or $60 per child a year

Help us fund the classroom materials necessary to educate students at the JustWorld/PIO schools in Cambodia. These supplies include equipment, desks, tables, lamps, chairs, office supplies, whiteboards and markers, copy paper, and cleaning supplies.

The PIO Classroom Materials ProgramUSD $10,000 per year or $14 per child a year

Help us provide schoolbags filled with materials including dictionaries, pencils, erasers, rulers, calculators, and notebooks, the required textbooks and workbooks for each government accredited class, and school uniforms and shoes for children whose families cannot afford to purchase basic supplies necessary for school attendance.

The PIO Uniform ProgramUSD $10,000 per year or $14 per child a year

Adopt one of our Nutrition ProgramsHelp us to provide a nutritious meal consisting of rice, soup, vegetables, meat, and purified drinking water to more than 650 students. The lunch program also covers salaries for a cook, an assistant cook, a cleaning assistant, and all cooking and dining materials.

Help us provide healthy mid-session snack each school day; this has shown to help improve the behavior, focus, academic achievement, and attendance rate of many children in our educational programs.

Adopt the family rice program that distributes rice allotments to families with children attending classes at a JustWorld/PIO school. Each child’s family receives 5 kg of rice each month, thus reducing the need to send children to gather food scraps or to earn money by picking garbage.

Adopt one of our Health & Hygiene ProgramsHelp us provide access for students to a medical clinic, a supply of general medicine, basic hygienic supplies, and regular workshops that teach proper hygiene and sanitation practices

The PIO Medical Supplies ProgramUSD $21,000 per year or $30 per child a year

Help us provide nurse services for children at the JustWorld/PIO schools. The nurses monitor students for common ailments and tends to them in the case of severe illness. This program covers the annual salaries for our committed, certified, and compassionate JustWorld/PIO school nurse.

With the support of our donors, JustWorld provides children in Tegucigalpa and Tornabé with school fees and materials their families could not otherwise afford; access to literacy and cultural activities for thousands of children in slum areas of Tegucigalpa; and after-school tutoring, nutrition, leadership and cultural development programs at the Natalie Johnson Center for a Just World in Tornabé. The center, built by JustWorld, serves more than 400 members of the Garifuna community (a marginalized Afro-indigenous community on the underdeveloped northeast coast of Honduras) by housing vocational workshops, microenterprises, and HIV/AIDS prevention counseling.

OVERALL PROJECT COSTUSD $158,000 per year

WHOMore than 2,400 children in Tegucigalpa, Honduras: Over 250 children in rural communities receiving scholarships through Angelworks; 2,000+ children in four urban slums given their only access to books through Compartir’s Mobile Library Project, and more than 200 children orphaned by HIV/AIDS, as well as other children and young adults with little family support beyond housing at the Natalie Johnson Center for a Just World in Tornabé, Honduras.

RESULTSAngelworks: an incredible retention rate each year of 90 percent of students who benefit from its scholarship program; Compartir: growth from 600 to more than 2,000 participants, benefitting from the Mobile Library Project visits and access to tutoring, books, and school materials; Natalie Johnson Center for a Just World: improved health and school performance of students, with many in excellent academic standing, and all of them moving on to the next grade level.

Honduras remains one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, with nearly 70 percent of the population living on less than $2 a day.

HOW YOU CAN HELPIN TEGUCIGALPA AND TORNABE, HONDURAS‘

Adopt one of our Education Programs in Tegucigalpa or TornabéHelp us provide a schoolbag filled with materials for children whose families cannot afford to purchase basic supplies necessary for school attendance. Materials include dictionaries, pencils, erasers, crayons, pencil sharpeners, rulers, calculators, textbooks, workbooks, and notebooks.

Help us provide children with school uniforms and shoes. Even though education is free in Honduras, the required uniforms to participate are not, and many families are too poor to afford them.

The Natalie Johnson Center Uniform ProgramUSD $4,000 per year or $27 per child a year

Help us provide tutoring for children motivated to work hard and maintain excellent grads, stay in school, graduate, and use the skills learned to make a difference in their communities. This program covers stipends for a team of local tutors in math, language, history, geography, and civics. Students receive instruction and guidance from tutors five days a week.

The Natalie Johnson Center Afterschool Tutoring ProgramUSD $18,000 per year or $90 per child a year

Help us develop youth literacy, expression, and social integration while providing access to books, reading programs, and scholastic support to more than 2,000 children, many of whom are isolated by remote distances or gang violence. Compartir’s Mobile Library Project provides access to book clubs, innovative community libraries, and “on foot” libraries led by volunteers. The materials needed to support the great work of the literacy development program include the mobile library truck, educational supplies, and snacks, as well as modest stipends for a dedicated team of educators and volunteers.

The Compartir Mobile Library Project Literacy Development ProgramUSD $20,000 per year or $10 per child a year

Adopt our Nutrition Program in TornabéHelp us provide a healthy daily meal for more than 200 children in the Garifuna community. This program also covers supplies and stipends for local women, acting as cooks and facilitators, who initiated the program to feed the children in their community orphaned by HIV/AIDS.

The Natalie Johnson Center Lunch ProgramUSD $30,000 per year or $100 per child a year

Adopt one of our Leadership & Cultural Development Programs in TornabéHelp us foster the artistic expression of more than 150 children through traditional Honduran and Garifuna drawing and painting, offering a means of preserving their cultural identity and developing skills for the future. This program includes a stipend for a painting teacher and a range of paints and supplies to enable artistic creativity.

The Natalie Johnson Center Painting ProgramUSD $2,500 per year or $15 per child a year

Help us nurture the artistic expression of more than 150 children in Tornabé through music education. This program will provide a stipend for a music instructor, as well as the purchase of Garifuna drums and other traditional instruments.

The Music ProgramUSD $5,000 per year or $30 per child a year

Help us provide more than 150 children orphaned by HIV/AIDS with access to organized sport as a way to develop leadership, teamwork, discipline, and self-esteem, while keeping them away from gang-related crime and drugs. This program will provide sporting goods, transportation to competitions, as well as a modest stipend for a sports instructor.

With the support of our donors, JustWorld has financed the creation of a medical clinic and community kitchen while providing children of the Jocotenango community in Sacatépequez, Guatemala, with the educational materials required for school attendance, after-school tutoring programs, leadership and cultural development activities, and nutrition programs.

OVERALL PROJECT COSTUSD $85,000 per year

WHOMore than 250 children and young adults from families whose daily lives are interrupted by violence and whose poverty blocks access to school, medical care, and often a nutritious meal. The children’s achievements in school and in the Los Patojos programs are helping to change the social conditions of these families and others in the Jocotenango community.

RESULTSImproved grades in school for a majority of students becoming active leaders in their communities as a result of the tutoring program and life skills taught at Los Patojos; year-round community participation in events held at the enhanced space for the children’s music and dance performances; a medical clinic and a doctor’s salary; expansion of the community kitchen through food and equipment donations.

HOW YOU CAN HELPIN JOCOTENANGO, GUATEMALA

Adopt our Nutrition Program Help us serve more than 24,000 lunches, including fresh vegetables, a source of protein, and purified water, each year. The menu follows the guidelines of the medical clinic doctor for best nutrition and has shown to help improve the behavior, focus, academic achievement, and attendance rate of many children in our educational programs.

The Los Patojos Lunch ProgramUSD $24,000 per year or $88 per child a year

Adopt one of our Health & Hygiene ProgramsHelp us cover the annual salary for Los Patojos’ certified, committed, and compassionate doctor, who currently runs medical clinics in the Los Patojos facility twice a week, tending to 20-25 patients per day. These two programs serve more than 250 children and their families each year, while also covering the cost of basic medical supplies and regular workshops that teach proper hygiene and sanitation practices.

Adopt one of our Education ProgramsHelp us offer school packages to children who consistently improve their grades and fulfill course requirements each term. These programs provide students with a schoolbag filled with supplies, textbooks, workbooks, as well as their required school uniform and shoes, which many families in Guatemala are often too poor to afford.

WHOMore than 100 children from four to seven years old living in Rocinha, the largest favela (slum) in South America. This program offers a space for after-school leisure and learning where few recreational options are available for children, while also promoting strengthening formal education and community participation.

RESULTSInstituto Reaçao has fostered long-term impact by using sports as an instrument of social transformation, and developing social, cognitive and personal capacities among children. JustWorld is helping to revamp the community literacy campaign in the favela of Rocinha, promoting a culture of peace and learning while serving children with no other means or access to after-school education and recreational programs.

Adopt our Teachers and Supplies ProgramAdopt a team of five teachers, facilitators, and community liaisons. The team engages with students and their families to develop the children’s social and cognitive skills through verbal and written communication support and scholastic reinforcement activities. The support also covers academic materials and learning games for more than 100 children.
