JUST ANOTHER DAY: UNI Edition

The closing of Baker Hall and how it affects

those that knew it best.

Dear readers, This is my letter to the readers of this magazine. I would like you to know that this is a project for my editing and design class at the Univer-sity of Northern Iowa. I am graduating this December and will begin work writing for a group of local papers outside Mason City, IA. Be-fore beginning this project, I had absolutely no experience with Adobe InDesign. Now, after an entire semester or working with it, I believe I have a pretty good understanding of how the process works and how to create different types of products.

In this project I have created different types of stories. I have a main article that is about the closing of Baker Hall and the commemoration event that occurred over homecoming weekend. The next piece is a photo story that features my two roommates and girlfriend. The story covers their school work and post-graduation plans. The next is a time-line that features the UNI football schedule and record. It maps out the highs and lows of the season. The other elements include the title page, this letter to the readers, and a table of contents.

Overall, this semester has been an enjoyable one while working on this project. It was great to learn this new program and make products that I had never even attempted before. InDesign had improved my Photoshop skills because the tools are very transferrable. Thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoy.

October 12 was an emotional day for many alumni of the University of Northern Iowa. On the day of the 2013 homecoming, alums visited cam-pus to look around, see the changes, talk with old friends, and to say good bye to a big part of their college years. These alums came home to com-memorate the closing of Baker Hall. To some Baker was a dorm building where they lived and met lifelong friends. For others, it was an office building where they met with students and spent their time while teaching at UNI. Baker Hall holds a special place in the hearts of these people, and saying good bye was not an easy thing to do.

Upon entering the building, it feels as if you are stepping into the past. The décor and the ornamentation on the door handles…the design of the stair cases…the outdated radiator system…and all of these things that make the building unique will soon cease to exist. The air in Baker Hall is heavy. This may be due to the recurring mold problems – one of the reasons for the closing of the building. Baker Hall has its issues and the University of Northern Iowa has de-cided that the upkeep and repairs needed to save this building are not worth the time or money. Built in 1935, Baker had initially served as a dormitory for men. People that attended the commemoration even told stories of panty-raids and other var-ious forms of mischief. The young men that inhabited the halls of Baker were what made it a good place to live. The activities that the men were able to par-ticipate in kept them busy and somewhat out of trouble. They had opportunities to use a recreation room to play games and relax. The dorm rooms themselves were nothing special…but neither is any other dorm room at the University of Northern Iowa. The men had everything they needed.

In its later years, Baker Hall became an office building for professors and instruc-tors on campus. The instructor that inhabited the building taught classes in the fields of English, literature, and religion. Students would populate the hallways trying to locate teaching staff during their office hours. For the next few months, students will still be meeting with staff while they remain in Baker. But slowly, the visits will decline – and an end will eventually come to them. The next question is where will all of these professors relocate? The renovations of an even older building, Bartlett Hall, are finally being completed. This former dorm is becoming the new office build-ing for professors. Some professors are not

happy about having to move all of their text books and materials to the news location. One former professor was livid at the idea of demolishing the building to begin with. When the professor heard that the space where Baker stands will be used as cosmetic “green space”, he had about had enough. “I can’t be-lieve this is actually happening,” he said. His office had been in Baker and he began blaming leadership at UNI for making poor decisions to begin with. This professor had taught one of the programs that had been cut in the previous year’s budget redesign. This example shows that not everyone is willing to accept the changes that are happening and the closing and demolishing of Baker Hall is just too much.

Kurt Wiethorn takes a picture of room 164. Wiethorn was the head resident of this hallway when he attended UNI.

I can’t believe this is actually happening.

The commemoration event was mostly an uplifting gathering. The ITS Production team was there at the event recording interviews with former residents of Baker Hall. The men would tell their favorite stories and refused to share some of their more outrageous ones. Men mostly in their sixties were walking around the halls like college seniors with a certain swagger that gave them a look of confidence. They were finding their old rooms and taking photos. Some were upset at the fact that they could not actu-ally get into the rooms (they were locked because professors are still using them). This did not stop them, however from finding old friends and getting the chance to reminisce about the days they spent together at college.

Right then I knew that this is the man I’m going to marry.

One of the stories of the day was one told by Viola Reimer. Mrs. Reimer was telling a story of how she was with her friends at the dining center and saw a young man in the dis-tance. “Right then I knew that this is the man I’m going to marry,” said Mrs. Reimer. Sure enough, Viola married that man, Mill Reimer. Mill was a former resident of Baker Hall and he was having a good time exploring the place where he used to live. There were many stories

that day similar to the Reimers’. It seemed that Baker Hall was the place if you wanted to find love! The time for Baker Hall has ended and a new chapter will begin at UNI. One thing is for sure – the memories made at this building will live on with the people that made it such a great place to be. The day was filled with revelry and story swapping, but hearts were breaking for the loss of an old companion.

As the first semester of the school year comes to a close, the University of Northern Iowa cam-pus begins to see an almost sud-den change in the weather. Some students, however, are taking full advantage of what time they have left at UNI. Shelby Claman, Erin Meyer, and JaLeen Freiberg - all Cedar Falls/Waterloo residents - are beginning to take a look back and begin the next chapter in their lives. Three girls, all in their fourth year of school, have important milestones approaching. The girls take a moment to relax in these photos and enjoy the little time they have left in school.

JaLeen Freiberg sits in the fallen leaves outside the library on UNI’s campus. Freiberg is finishing her

first semester of sonography school at Allen College.

Above: Freiberg enjoys the last bit of the sun beside the campanile. After a chal-lenging two years in the Allen College X-ray program, sonography school has been a breath of fresh air. Upon finishing this academic year, she will begin a whole year of clinical site training to complete her diagnostic imaging degree.

Right: Erin Meyer stands next to the campanile in central UNI campus. Meyer will be walking in the December 2013 graduation ceremony and doing her student teaching the spring - in India. Meyer is a TESOL major and spanish minor. Meyer

will specialize in teaching English to speakers of other languages.

Below: Meyer stands a short walk from the Schindler Education Center. She has traveled the globe during her short time at UNI. Meyer has been to Chile, Italy, Peru, and is leading a group to the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico this winter before she travels to India. There is definitely no shortage of worldly experience with Meyer.

Page 19: Just another day - Joe Barloon

Above: Shelby Claman is a TESOL and Spanish double major and is also walking in December and student teaching in the spring. Like Meyer, she is not your typical student teacher. Claman is going to fulfill her requirements in Texas.

Page 20: Just another day - Joe Barloon

Above: Claman’s success does not stop with her undergraduate roles. She was recently offered the opportunity to attend graduate school for special education teaching. For now it appears that after her student teaching is complete, Claman will continue her ed-ucation at UNI. Once that program is done, Claman will be high up in the ranks as one of the most employable instructors. With backgrounds in Spanish and special education, finding a job should not take long.

Page 21: Just another day - Joe Barloon

Below: Freiberg has paid her dues while attending Allen College. Long nights studying, and an utter lack of free time have kept her out of trouble. Her grades, however, are a testament to her knowledge and dedication to the programs she is in. With a GPA well above 3.5, she obviously knows her material. After completing her clinical hours for sonography, she will be in high demand in the ever-changing medical field. Freiberg has a future that involves a constantly changing environment combined with a VERY competitive salary for someone just leaving college.
