COME TO FISHGrab a bite . Stay the nightAfter a day of fishing, head out to a local restaurant for a cool drink and a hot meal. Treat yourself to an overnight stay and take advantage of many other outdoor activities in Durham Region.

SpringAs the warmer weather approaches, it’s open season on Durham Region’s three world-class bodies of water —Lake Simcoe, Lake Scugog and Lake Ontario. Various species of fish can be found this time of year, including some of the best Black Crappie fishing in Canada, on Lake Scugog. For a successfully crappie day on the water, the pros recommend using small jigs and soft plastics under a float.

Other stars of the season include: Carp found in shallow bays, marshes and river mouths of Lake Ontario; spring Steelhead running far up creeks and rivers for the annual spawn; and Jumbo Perch, commonly found when the ice first comes off of Lake Simcoe.

Summer Every summer starting in June, thousands of boats converge on Lake Ontario to experience some of the finest Salmon fishing in the world. It’s not uncommon for anglers to catch dozens of Salmon on an average day, weighing upwards of 40 pounds!

Other stars of the season include: Walleye, found right here in Durham, and considered by most to be the tastiest fish in Ontario; great numbers and sizes of Muskie found all summer long on Lake Scugog; and you can’t beat the Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass fishing on all of Durham’s world-class lakes.

FallOnce September arrives, most fish are known to go on a feeding frenzy in order to prepare for the cold winter ahead. Lake Simcoe produces some of the largest Smallmouth Bass in the world this time of year, making it one of Ontario’s prime bass fishing destinations. For best results, the pros say to use jerkbaits, spinners and tubes.

Other stars of the season include: the largest run of Chinook and Coho Salmon in Ontario can be found in the Bowmanville Creek; world-class Steelhead fishing on creeks and rivers; and Big Brown Trout can

be found migrating up creeks and rivers annually during early fall.

WinterEvery winter, Lake Simcoe becomes an ice fisherman’s dream. With a massive ice fishing village housing thousands of portable and permanent huts, this favourite Canadian pastime is enjoyed recreationally by families and skilled anglers. Anglers have been known to consistently catch large numbers of Lake Trout, Whitefish and Perch out on the frozen waters.

Lake Simcoe’s famous Jumbo Perch are massive and attract anglers from all over the world. Those who brave the cold can be rewarded with the biggest Steelhead of the year in Durham’s creeks.
