It was a great pleasure to review the largest number of applicaons ever submied for this juried contemporary exhibion and I was truly astounded by the caliber and range in the grouping of over 700 works of art. With this many submissions presenng the “state of the art” in Michigan, I saw interesng paerns and connecons between works that felt regionally specific yet universally resonant. The depicon of a wide range of landscapes in a variety of media and styles reflected concerns for both the natural world and the socio-economic condions of urban environments, under threat on many fronts. Not surprisingly, identy and polics were notable topics of interest to many arsts. But it was the way that arsts handled these tough issues that impressed me, with genuine expressions that felt both deeply personal and broad reaching. Going beyond strict representaon, Gloria Joseph, Bowen Kline, and Emily Mayo presented works that struck me as stand-outs in their abilies to evoke parcularly strong moods, accomplished through the handling of their respecve media. There is an air of mystery in Kline’s painng Workday. The central figure and undefined surroundings were skillfully composed through the selecon of subdued tones and faceted shapes. It is a scene that invites mulple interpretaons. THE NUMBERS This year, 406 arsts submied 734 artwork entries to be considered for inclusion. The juror, Amy Chaloupka, selected 125 works by 107 arsts for the 91st Michigan Contemporary Art Exhibion (formerly known as the Regional Exhibion). This is the eighth consecuve year in the exhibion’s history that entry was open to arsts in every geographical area of Michigan. Thank you to all the arsts for your entries. OPENING & SALES The 91st Michigan Contemporary Art Exhibion opens Thursday, September 5, 2019, at 5:30 pm. An opening recepon will be held that evening, 5:30 to 8:00 pm, with awards being presented at 6:30 pm. Guests will have the opportunity to meet and congratulate the winning arsts in the exhibion galleries at the conclusion of the awards program. If you are interested in purchasing a work listed in this brochure, please inquire at the Museum Store. LOOK. BUY. COLLECT! I observed again and again a strong interest in texture, paern, and color exploraons that revealed an earnest playfulness in many works. I loved seeing that even in challenging mes, play has not been lost and is clearly valued as a worthy pursuit. In this regard, two-dimensional works, parcularly in the areas of painng, photography, and drawing were the strengths of this year’s submissions for being the most playfully innovave. Works by John Dempsey, Patricia Constanne, Kelly Vander Kley, and Jillian Dickson all shone. Dickson’s gliering shrine to the sacred universe of the family unit, Dear, I’ll Paint You a Drawing Forever, stood out for a richness in detail that looked like it was just plain fun to create. Arsts have a remarkable ability to feel the pulse of their surrounding environments and reflect, through their work, the complexity and wonder of the world. I am grateful to all of the arsts who submied works to the Muskegon Museum of Art Contemporary Art Exhibion. I hope all connue to boldly pursue their exploraons; as the empathy and crical thought they share with others, through the creave process, has never been more dearly needed. JUROR’S STATEMENT

Thank you to the Muskegon Museum of Art and especially to Director of Collections and Exhibitions Art Martin for seamlessly organizing such an incredible presentation for its 91st year. It was a great pleasure to review the largest number of applications ever submitted for this juried contemporary exhibition and I was truly astounded by the caliber and range in the grouping of over 700 works of art.

With this many submissions presenting the “state of the art” in Michigan, I saw interesting patterns and connections between works that felt regionally specific yet universally resonant. The depiction of a wide range of landscapes in a variety of media and styles reflected concerns for both the natural world and the socio-economic conditions of urban environments, under threat on many fronts. Not surprisingly, identity and politics were notable topics of interest to many artists. But it was the way that artists handled these tough issues that impressed me, with genuine expressions that felt both deeply personal and broad reaching.

Going beyond strict representation, Gloria Joseph, Bowen Kline, and Emily Mayo presented works that struck me as stand-outs in their abilities to evoke particularly strong moods, accomplished through the handling of their respective media. There is an air of mystery in Kline’s painting Workday. The central figure and undefined surroundings were skillfully composed through the selection of subdued tones and faceted shapes. It is a scene that invites multiple interpretations.

THE NUMBERS This year, 406 artists submitted 734 artwork entries to be considered for inclusion. The juror, Amy Chaloupka, selected 125 works by 107 artists for the 91st Michigan Contemporary Art

Exhibition (formerly known as the Regional Exhibition). This is the eighth consecutive year in the exhibition’s history that entry was open to artists in every geographical area of Michigan. Thank you to all the artists for your entries.

OPENING & SALES The 91st Michigan Contemporary Art Exhibition opens Thursday, September 5, 2019, at 5:30 pm. An opening reception will be held that evening, 5:30 to 8:00 pm, with awards being presented at 6:30 pm. Guests will have the opportunity to meet and congratulate the winning artists in the exhibition galleries at the conclusion of the awards program.

I observed again and again a strong interest in texture, pattern, and color explorations that revealed an earnest playfulness in many works. I loved seeing that even in challenging times, play has not been lost and is clearly valued as a worthy pursuit. In this regard, two-dimensional works, particularly in the areas of painting, photography, and drawing were the strengths of this year’s submissions for being the most playfully innovative. Works by John Dempsey, Patricia Constantine, Kelly Vander Kley, and Jillian Dickson all shone. Dickson’s glittering shrine to the sacred universe of the family unit, Dear, I’ll Paint You a Drawing Forever, stood out for a richness in detail that looked like it was just plain fun to create.

Artists have a remarkable ability to feel the pulse of their surrounding environments and reflect, through their work, the complexity and wonder of the world. I am grateful to all of the artists who submitted works to the Muskegon Museum of Art Contemporary Art Exhibition. I hope all continue to boldly pursue their explorations; as the empathy and critical thought they share with others, through the creative process, has never been more dearly needed.
