Welcome BackWelcome back to Term 3 and we hope that your mid-year break was both relaxing and rewarding. The students have started the term well and have settled back into a good routine already.

Staffing During the holidays, Ms Susan Ridley (Prep 2) was offered and accepted a job in Tasmania. We are excited for Susan as she begins a new venture in her life but sad to see a much loved and experienced teacher leave our community.

We welcome Mrs Bronwyn Waters to our teaching staff. Mrs Bronwyn Waters has been appointed the inaugural Director of the Early Learning Centre. She comes to St Andrews with 22 years of experience in Early Childhood Education. During this time she has worked in a variety of settings, including two extended periods as a Director of Early Learning Centres. Bronwyn also has experience as an Educator developing the next generation of Early Child-hood Educators, which will help to ensure that the Staff employed in our Centre will continue to grow and develop. Parents of children attending the ELC can be confident that their child is in the very best of hands.

TSA and Pedestrian CrossingThank you to the Traffic Safety Attendants who volunteer their time to help your children get to the car safely. The one small benefit they get is a reserved car park so that they can do their job. Please make sure these parks are kept vacant for our Traffic Safety Attendants. ELC News

During this week many parents have taken up the oppor-tunity to meet with their child’s teacher, in Parent Teacher Interviews, after reflecting on the Student Reports sent home at the end of Semester Two.

We value regular communication between home and school and are confident about the difference this can make to each child’s progress. Research information sug-gests that some of the most important factors in shaping children’s achievement are the influence of parents and the home environment.

It is crucial that parents and teachers see children as capa-ble individuals on an individual learning journey. Each child will develop and progress at their own pace … and while some parents will want to know how their child’s progress compares with that of others, it is important that the focus is strongly on celebrating their children’s successes, how-ever small, and on building in support to help them move forward from that point.

“Carol Tomlinson (2000), a noted expert on differentiation, points out that research has proven that students are more successful when they are taught based on their own readi-ness levels, interests and learning profiles.” (The Centre for Comprehensive School Reform and Improvement – updated April 30, 2014.) This is one of our strategic priorities across the Junior School this year.

At home, parents can encourage their child to see, and cel-ebrate, his/her strengths rather than weaknesses. Remem-ber that in any class children’s ages will cover a span of at least 12 months and, especially in the Early Years, this puts them at very different developmental stages. Praising the efforts your child puts in will encourage them to try harder and foster a “growth mindset.”

Together, we have the privilege and responsibility of facilitating the growth, development and happiness of the children given to us to love and nurture.

“Encourage one another and build up one another.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Joy SchlossDeputy Head P-3 Assistant PYP Coordinator

I would like to say hello and thank you to the beautiful St Andrews College community for welcoming me so warmly. I am extremely excited to be appointed the Director of the Early Learning Centre and helping to bring the dreams and visions of the school to life.

My first week has been exciting! I have had a site visit and reviewed the plans of the service, and it will truly will be an amazing space for children and families. I have also been working on key documents and policies and reviewing the waiting list which is fabulous as it indicates the need and the excitement for the Early Learning Centre.

In the coming weeks I will be contacting families to arrange interviews and undertaking enrolments for the Centre. If you have any questions or enquires about the service please do not hesitate to contact myself on 5568 5990.

Japanese News

Skype Sessions In Junior JapaneseOne way we can communicate with others in Japan is through Skype or Facetime sessions. Recently Year 1A had the opportunity to Skype with Fuzoku Elementary School in Shikoku, Japan. This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to ask their inquiry questions in Japanese and English about the Central Idea - People in all countries have responsibility to care for animals.

INSIGHTSBuilding parent-school partnerships

Learning to stop and think before reacting is one of the most valuable life skills a child can develop.

Raising space cadets

WORDS Michael Grose

Know someone with a hair trigger? The smallest thing sets them off. That ‘thing’ maybe a cutting comment from someone, a nasty look or a thoughtless remark. Whatever it is, not a moment is taken to think, consider or weigh up options. They simply explode.

Anger exudes from every pore.

I know some adults like this. They are

awful to live with. Their family walks on

eggshells, not wanting to upset them.

The trouble is, they’ve been like that since

childhood.

I also know some kids like this. I wonder

if their hair trigger will remain into

adulthood. Such kids, who are usually

highly strung, need to learn to put a

space between an event (that leads to a

reaction) and their response. They need

to become space cadets, learning how to

stop, think and act – all in a split second.

When a space cadet hears someone

say something sarcastic he’ll pause for a

split second while he thinks of different

responses (ranging from doing nothing

through to engaging in a bit of humorous

banter) and only then choose the best

of those responses. Some space cadets

I know, who have been taught this skill,

will call on their BEST SELF and choose

the best response based on one that

represents their values for that occasion.

Space cadets generally have healthier

relationships as they are predictable, more

considerate and better able to match their

responses to their own BEST self.

Anyone who has ever regretted a

remark they made to a friend, loved one

or workmate under duress will know

what I mean. You felt that the remark ‘let

yourself down’. Space cadets experience

less of this guilt as they are more likely to

make the right remark in the first place.

Space cadets have high emotional awareness which not

only leads to better responses, but it also

leads to better regulation of emotions and

behaviour. That’s why the development

of self-awareness in kids is probably more

important to long-term wellbeing, success

and happiness than the development of

self-esteem. If not, it’s on a par because

it’s such a valuable skill to possess.

When something evokes an unpLeasant emotion

(anger, frustration or anxiety), encourage kids to:

Avoid reacting

impulsively. take some deep

breaths. Be calm.

WhAt happened? how are you feeling?

What are you thinking?

hoW can you best

respond?
