I am in the studentcouncil and also in National HonorSociety. This is my second year incosmetology school, and I plan onfinishing the school and getting mylicense at the end of summer. A Message From theBoard Chair

The current economic situation is confusingwith high unemployment, mortgage foreclosuresforcing families from their homes, and our stateand federal governments drowning in a sea ofdebt.

Our national debt is at an unprecedented $14trillion and growing every day. That’s a 14 withtwelve zeros behind it. These situations are difficultto comprehend as an adult, much less explaining itin an age-appropriate way to children.

America must do a better job of educatingstudents about effective money management, notonly so they can avoid the financial pitfalls whereso many adults have fallen, but because our schoolchildren will someday run our businesses,government, and financial institutions.

How can young people obtain the financialfundamentals they so desperately need?Fortunately, there are organizations who areanswering the call to educate and prepare the nextgeneration of consumers with basic economicconcepts.

Junior Achievement is a non-profit organizationthat partners with business and education todeliver programs providing young people withsolid, practical skills to confront the economic and

personal decisions of life.After participating inJunior Achievementprograms, studentsrecognize the importantconnections betweeneducation, career, salaryand desired lifestyle.

Erica RodesErica is a senior at the Lutheran SchoolAssociation. She likes to dance, act, listento music, watch movies, organize things,and hang out with her friends. She hasbeen active in praise band and drama teamfor four years. Erica has also been theeditor of the yearbook and involved withstudent government for the past twoyears. She is a member of National HonorSociety. She is a greeter and a member ofthe altar guild at her church. Erica plans togo to Western Illinois University andmajor in accounting.

She was namedMacon County Volleyball Player of theYear three years in a row, selected as anAmeren Scholar Athlete, and was WANDathlete of the month in 2010. Two major ones would bethe IIEE young Entrepreneur Conferencein Itasca and Camp CEO at MillikinUniversity. My team won third-place inthe Start-Up Business Competition at theIIEE conference. It was an excitingcompetition. It was exciting to see andmeet all of my peers who were youngaspiring entrepreneurs also. While I was atCamp CEO, the team I was on first-placeand defeated five other teams. I will begraduating in May. After graduation, I willbe going to the United States MarineCorps. I have already enlisted, and I amcurrently conditioning myself for my leaveon August 8 to go to boot camp in SanDiego, CA. I’d like to be stationed overseasand live with my girlfriend, soon to befiancé/wife, Elizabeth Ann Erhardt. I planon winning this competition. I am alsopursuing going to college for businesswhile I am enlisted in the Marines.

Life SkillsHigh School Students get to live in the

“real world”for a day. They are given acareer, a salary and a family. Students mustwrite checks for items they would need

(clothing, food, cars insurance, etc.). At theend of the day we see what their balance is.

Titan Business ChallengeJunior and senior students compete for

college scholarships as a team of two. As ateam they run a company and must makedecisions about marketing, product sells,employs all in a virtual world.

introduced to economic concepts and workplace skills in

When in April of 2010 JillApplebee asked me to participatein Junior Achievement and teach agrade school class, I had to thinkabout it. Although I had taught atthe college level both at RichlandCommunity College and MillikinUniversity I questioned my abilityto hold the interest of youngerchildren as we discussed business.

I did agree and was assignedthe 5th grade class at St. PatrickSchool taught by Mrs. Kathy Litz.After meetingwith Mrs. Litzand seeing herenthusiasm forthe program Ifelt that thiscould be fun.

Thematerialsprovided byJuniorAchievementwere excellentand gives thevolunteerguidelines andtips for dealingwith younger students. The subject ofthe five section curriculum business

and careers in “Our Nation” offersfun tools like games but also offers

the opportunity fortrue teaching. Theclasses exploredentrepreneurshipand careers and alsohave a section onglobalization.

I wassurprised at howaware the youngpeople were. On thefirst day as I wasintroducing myself Isaid I was retiredand asked if theyknew what thatmeant. One student

said that it meant that “you don’twork, but still get paid.” That offered

me the opportunity to discuss thesources of retirement income andfound that they were quite skepticalabout the future of social security.Obviously they were listening towhat their families were discussing athome.

The five sessions were over veryquickly and I enjoyed the experienceimmensely. Mrs. Litz asked if I wouldreturn next year and I quicklyresponded “yes.” I will be teachingthe class again this April. I alsoencourage both the currentlyemployed and retirees to considerparticipation in the JuniorAchievement program, it is enjoyableand rewarding.
