A word from Principal, Paul Kish
Summer Break is Here!
Our first school year as MHJH comes to an end! It has been a school year
filled with many new experiences – new school, new classmates, new friends, new curriculums, new building, new tests, new teachers …too many news to keep listing!! Ha. I am extremely proud of the hard work that was accom-
plished in the monster task of merging our schools to create MHJH. Such an endeavor in creating a new school takes the collaborative efforts of many individuals! I want to wish all students and families a fantastic summer
break and I hope that each of you get to spend quality time with family and friends. Thanks to the entire MHJH community for their support and coop-
eration this past school year! Congratulations to Students Recognized at MHJH Academic Awards Night!
We had many students recognized at our first ever MHJH Academic Award Night events!! Over 450 students were highlighted for their academic achievements this past school year! The
events were held by grade level over three evenings in May. These students are to be com-mended for their hard work and efforts in the classroom. Cumulative Principal’s and Honor Roll students were recognized as well as those students receiving departmental awards. A few
other awards were handed out also – perfect attendance, athletic leadership, and the Presiden-tial Award. We are extremely proud of these students and their families that share in the ac-complishment. These are the students that truly define our school. Congratulations to all!
End of the Year Field Trips for MHJH Students!
End of the school year field trips for each grade level took place in the month of May at MHJH. All students were very hard at work with standardized testing and classroom requirements. However, school is supposed to be fun also and we want to provide learning opportunities out-
side of the classroom for students to interact with peers. Each grade level at MHJH engaged in an end of the year field trip opportunity. Students are very fortunate to have staff members that stepped up to provide this opportunity for our students. I believe these events will be part
of the yearly template created for our students in the future. These trips served as a very re-warding end of the school year experience for MHJH students. Trips and directors are as fol-
lows: Grade 7: Cleveland Indians Game, May 21st; Tom Andrews Grade 8: Southpark Mall/ Movie, May 23rd; Johnny Bollin and Amanda Musselman
Grade 9: Cedar Point, May 30th; Russ Krivak and Amy Jambor Summer Orientation Dates!
Students in each grade level will once again have an opportunity for a summer orientation pro-gram prior to the start of the new school year. Students will receive schedules, lockers, and
have an opportunity to tour the building. Students that have attended MHJH for one year will still benefit from getting their new schedule and walking halls to find new rooms prior to the school year; we hope that all students attend! This will be a nice opportunity to get a head
start on the new school year and get familiar with new class locations. Orientations will run from 9:00 to 10:30 on the following dates:
Grade 9: Wednesday, August 13th Grade 8: Thursday, August 14th Grade 7: Friday, August 15th

2014-2015 MHJH Open House set for August 21st!
We will conduct an open house event next school year on Thursday, August 21st from 5:00-7:00. All students and
their families are welcome to attend! We will conduct the event in the same manner as last year in which it will run as a meet and greet format. No formal bell schedule will be
run. Parents and students will have an opportunity to meet new teachers, say hi to former teachers, and get acclimated to the building for the new school year. The event is run-
ning on the evening of our second day of school and should serve as a nice opportunity to bring the MHJH school com-
munity together for 2014-2015. Please mark your calen-dars!
Changes for MHJH in the 2014-2015 School Year
Changes will exist for next year in adjustment to things learned in our first year as a junior
high. Various aspects of the schedule and transportation in particular will be adjusted. We will continue to review procedures and policies that exist. Our goal as a staff is to develop a school structure and develop policies that work in the best interest of all students and the
school as a whole. Some of the changes for 2014-2015 are as follows:
The time period of the school day will change to 7:45 a.m. – 2:45 p.m.
Reading Workshop and Writing Workshop classes will change and be combined to one class:
Reading Writing Workshop.
The number of class periods per day will reduce to 7.
Eighth graders taking grade eight science and physical science will take the course during
the normal structure of the school day; the instruction for grade 8 science will be provided as a hybrid during alternating enrichment periods. No zero period before school will be add-
ed or required.
Teachers will have a common planning time per core curricular area built into their schedule
to provide for collaboration, data review, and lesson development.
We will no longer have an alternating schedule of classes that meet Monday/Wednesday and
Tuesday/Thursday with every other Friday. Students will have a nine week rotation of spe-cial area courses.
The MHJH attendance office will move to the window outside of the main office.
The cell phone policy will change to allow for cell phone use only at select times and loca-
tions during the school day.
Students will purchase a separate padlock to use with school lockers. They will no longer
need to work with the built-in lock that exists. Those are being removed. Others changes may exist and we will continue to review items in this regard. As changes oc-
cur I will be sure to communicate with parents and students to ensure that all are aware. Information from the Records Secretary…
If you intend to withdraw your child over the summer, please complete the “Withdrawal” form that is attached to
the end of this newsletter, sign and mail it to Middleburg Heights Junior High. Reminder: Remember to login to
the parent portal over the summer and update any ad-dress/phone or custody changes. If the changes are address/custody related, enter your re-quest then contact the registrar at the Board office to submit the proper paperwork to update
these changes.

Tuesdays with Bridge...With what once started at Roehm Middle School, has now continued at
Middleburg Heights Junior High this year. Certified bridge teachers from the American Con-tract Bridge league in the community have been teaching a group of 8th & 9th graders once a
week during enrichment class how to play the card game of Bridge. The game involves num-bers, tricks, books, trumps, bids, and declarers. More importantly, it teaches critical thinking, math and social skills. Bridge is a card game invented over 100 years ago. Unlike other games
that you master and eventually quit playing because they no longer challenge you, Bridge is a game that offers continuous challenges, new situations to be analyzed, and a complex and in-
triguing language to be learned and mastered. Mr. Chuck Bisesi, from the Berea Kiwanis, Mr. Gene Krejsa and Mrs. Celeste Krejsa have been instrumental in helping the students gain the knowledge and confidence in learning this tough mind game. Bridge is often seen as a genera-
tional game, but students are learning it is a game for all ages. Students enjoyed the weekly sessions because they were learning challenging concepts while still having fun with their friends.
Congratulations to the team as they competed this May for the first time in the ACBL Regional Tournament against 80 area students. 8th graders Nathan Strinka and Andrew Dinin took 1st
place in their section while Joshua Ramirez and Thomas Scheu took 3rd place in theirs. Team members also included: Tyler Redetzki, Emmett O’Flanagan, Leianna Yates, Kelian Disher, Lance O’Dell and Max Evanko. We are very fortunate to have wonderful community volunteers
who have taken the time to work with our students.
