In my last editorial I mentioned we planned to have friends over to enjoy the autumn harvest… well it turned out to be a hit, made all the better by the Anzac Day sunshine. Everyone brought something they had harvested and collectively we created a gastronomical event including chestnuts, stone fruit, pumpkin and feijoas.

It was surprising how much ambience was created sitting among the chestnut trees in the orchard. We set up tables with tablecloths, dinner plates and even a slab of old kauri for the kids’ table. Commemorating the Anzacs brought a lively element into the conversation as many of us swapped stories of relatives who had served and what it meant to them.

The afternoon just seemed to disappear. We were delighted seeing the enjoyment our chestnut orchard contributed to the afternoon. As lifestyle block or farm owners we sometimes forget to take time away from the list of jobs waiting to be done, celebrate the season outdoors and enjoy the land in the company of friends. It reminded us how lucky we are to be able to enjoy our little slice of heaven.

Now that winter’s here, celebrating the solstice sitting around a bonfire or fireplace enjoying a wine and cheese or whatever takes our fancy seems like a good excuse for another gathering. This year’s solstice will be at precisely 11.09am on 21 June.

Our autumn harvest picnic has carved a

place in our memory and we’re looking forward to next autumn’s event… which may well roll-on for longer into the evening with the help of a bonfire to sit around roasting chestnuts.

Wetland Restoration on a Shoestring Part II, we ran in Issue 53 (available online at rurallifestyle.co.nz). The calls indicate many rural landowners are keen to clean up their ponds in an effective yet environmentally friendly manner.

Grass carp have been proven to clear weeds effectively and long term they provide a very attractive alternative to herbicides or to weeding by hand or mechanically. Once the appropriate number of fish is matched with weeds’ quantity and growth rate the weeds can be controlled in a sustainable way.

Two ponds in Dairy Flat recently exemplified the ideal situation for using grass carp. The ponds collect water from rainfall, are entirely surrounded by raupo (Typha orientalis) and almost

completely covered in water fern (Azolla filiculoides) and duckweed (Lemna minor). The owners wanted to clear the thick weed coverage as the general state of these ponds is very poor, with almost no light penetration. The surface weed levels create very low oxygen levels and, left uncontrolled, the weed growth would eventually kill the aquatic life. The owners had tried other methods of control when the ongoing expense of herbicides and the potential risk to families living nearby motivated them to consider grass carp as an alternative.

Blair, from NZ Waterways, says the application to DOC for a licence to release grass carp into the ponds has been a very smooth process, adding that it is an ideal solution for this situation as it will provide a safe, sustainable method of keeping the ponds healthy and free of water fern and weed.

Its history was of no interest to me then, but I’ve since learned that the Show’s first iteration began when Auckland, which had been founded three years earlier, was still mostly farmland. In 1843, agricultural displays and competitions were held by the newly established Auckland Agricultural & Pastoral Association, set up to support the development of New Zealand’s farm economy. A hundred years later, the A&P Association combined with the Auckland Manufacturer’s Association, who held their Show at Easter to promote New Zealand-manufactured goods. In those early days the Shows were huge and ran for two weeks. In 1972, an Act of Parliament formalised the relationship and formed a Board with members from the A&P and AMA. While the AMA now run separate Shows, like the Boat Show and the Home Show, the

Board continues to run the Auckland Showgrounds and the Easter Show, re-branded this year as the Coca Cola Easter Show.

After attending – and really enjoying – the 2012 Coca Cola Easter Show, I talked with Board member Duncan McNab about the A&P’s continued involvement.

Going to the Show now as an adult, it seems to me that the event is an important cultural project in that it’s sharing the rural way of life with townies. Would you agree with that?

Absolutely. The best thing about the Show this year was seeing that the A&P activities are a major focal point for the Auckland public and a celebration of what we can achieve on our farms. It ties in with the Association aim to bring the country to the town.

What role do the livestock competitions play? We’ve always aimed to promote excellence through competition. We want livestock breeders to be able to show us their best in this very well-established public forum. Having them there provides both entertainment and education.

Apart from the competitions, what other entertainment is there? There’s part of everyone that wants to be a farmer, so a really important driver is that we want people to enjoy the experience and be involved in the activities. They could pet animals like calves, chooks, ducklings and rabbits. We had a shearing area where people could watch sheep being shorn and wool being baled and then come up and talk to the shearers and balers and have their photograph taken with them. We had the public on the drafting gates, milking cows and feeding calves. We had the miniature horses inside for the first time this year and their handlers got kids out of the crowd to lead them.

What new initiatives did the organisers take this year? Advertising on social media like Twitter and Facebook gave the Show a lot of visibility. One initiative was to let kids 12 years and

under in free and that made it accessible to a lot more people. The agricultural part of the Show used to be scattered around different parts of the grounds and it wasn’t that satisfactory – it was kind of lost, and people would drift into the sideshow area and then be too tired to look at anything else. So this year a major improvement was that we put all the livestock in one pavilion. The ASB Showgrounds CEO Mark Frankham came up with the brilliant idea of shutting the main Greenlane Rd entrance and having people enter round the back, which meant that the first building they passed was the livestock pavilion. That was a great way of bringing people into the A&P activities.

Organising it must be a huge job. What kinds of things does it involve?One of the special things of the Show is how everyone works together. There were a lot of good people who made it happen, including the paid staff who run the Showgrounds under the direction of the Board and the A&P members who run the committees right through from sales and marketing to different sections like cattle, sheep and the wine competition, to the guys who help put out the pens. All the organisers are volunteers and there’s a year’s work in the build-up, like changing the format of different competitions and encouraging more competitors by giving them inducements. The judges come from Australia and around NZ so there’s a lot of work organising that. My job is

to get the programme to flow and help work out where to put everything.

This year we had a few Council resignations late in the day so the pressure was on. Five days before the show opened we realised what a huge task we had in front of us, because the building was far larger than any area we’ve had to fill before. As well as Farm World and the shearing area we had a spot for the alpacas, Shetlands, pigs and sheep. We brought in portable yards for the public to draft livestock and there was an area for dogs to do mustering. We put the Captain Cooker and the deer behind the farm. The poultry and the rabbits went down the middle aisle and that was the best display we’ve ever had of those animals. We had pens of cattle, dairy heifers and Friesian bulls to be looked at and drafted.

Over the 5 days there were 200 animals per day in the pavilion - alpacas, mini horses, donkeys, Clydesdales, dairy cattle etc. We had to find sponsors for the animal feed, sawdust for the floors. We had to make the experience flow and make it user friendly. We made the area where the cattle are stored accessible and put in a walkway so people could see them. In the judging rings we had the seating arranged so the public could see through from one end of the building to the other. It was the best judging ring we’ve had for years because of its size.

Are there any plans for future initiatives? We're always working on how to improve what we do, for example we need interactive TV screens that convey supplementary information about the animals and the competitions in an interesting and fun way.

Do you think this year’s Show was a success? Yes I do. There were over 60,000 people through the gate. In the pavilion there was always something going on and we noticed a lot of people came back for return visits during the day. Judging from the looks on people’s faces over the 5 days, I think the result was phenomenal.

If you’re lucky, you’ll have some native bush on your property that you can stroll through, admiring the trees, appreciating the coolness in summer, watching the comings and goings of the bird life and, best of all, enjoying that restful feeling of being away from the hustle and bustle of the world.

If you’re not that lucky but you’d like to be, it’s quite feasible to plant your own bush walk. It just takes a little bit of planning and a little bit of patience.

There are two ways to go about this project — one will give you a more landscaped bush walk, the other a more natural look. Both require the setting aside of a reasonable amount of land; you’re going to need some depth to your planting to get that ‘cut off from

Cato Bolam will assist you in maximising the development potential of your rural landholding through:

the world’ feeling. You might be creating your path at the edge of existing mature bush, or you might be starting with a blank canvas.

So how much land will you need? Ideally, allow 20 metres or so width for the planting and the path, and as much length as possible. A 10m long path will be good, but 30m will be really special, and 60m or more, even better.

Once you’ve got your plot outlined, it’s time to mark out the path. Use bamboo canes or electric fence standards to mark the centre of the path.

We don’t want any straight lines here — we’re aiming for nice flowing curves. Use spray marker to define the edges of the path by measuring half a metre off each side of the canes or standards. This gives you a path 1m wide.

To allow for growth, your first line of plants (and they’ll be the smaller ones) should be a further half a metre from the path edge,

so that’s 2m of our width used up. And if you have a look at our sketch you can see how close the curved path gets to the edge if our plot is only 10m wide.

How many plants are you going to need? Well, basically, one plant per square metre will do the trick. By planting densely, we get canopy cover quickly. This is where the plants grow together and smother weed undergrowth.

Planting at 1.5m or even 2m spacing is okay too, but you’ll have to wait longer for the same result. In the meantime, you’ll need to maintain the weeds, which on a big area can be quite time consuming. In my experience, it’s better to plant tight and get cover established faster.

So for an area 20m wide and 30m long (600 square metres), for example, less the area taken out for the path (2m x 30m or 60 square metres), 500 plants will be close enough.

planting — the natural look or the landscaped look.

For the natural look, you need a good mix of revegetation natives, with fewer of the taller growing forest species, such as kauri, kahikatea, titoki, totara, puriri, karaka etc, and more of the faster but smaller growing understorey varieties, such as pittosporum, karamu, mahoe, flax, matipo, cabbage tree, five finger, nikau, manuka, kanuka, ferns, muehlenbeckia, reinga lily, grasses and so on. Most native varieties have something for the birds — seed, nectar, habitat — so the more diversity, the more reason there is for the birds to visit.

You’ll plant your bigger growing forest species at 5m spacing, so you’ll need only 20 or so of those. Then bring your overall spacing down to 1m by filling in with the understorey plants.

Plant in a reasonably random pattern because, remember, you’re going for the natural look.

For a more landscaped look, you will need a similar number of plants, but fewer varieties.

Here’s one way to tackle the landscaped look: choose one, maybe two, of the big-growing varieties, and plant a little closer for this scenario, at 3 or 4m spacing. The spacing will be influenced by the species chosen: for instance, kauri or kahikatea could be 3 to 4m apart, while the rounder-crowned karaka and puriri would be better 4 to 5m apart.

At 4m spacing, you’ll need about 35 plants, at 3m spacing, you’ll need about 60. If you decide to go with just one variety, simply spread it evenly throughout the plot; with two varieties, plant in drifts rather than mix them up.

Now for the understorey: again, you’re going to plant in big drifts. You’ll need four to six varieties and roughly 450 to 500 plants for our hypothetical area of 600 square metres. All will be small-growing plants such as reinga lily, ground ferns, mountain flax, shade-tolerant native grasses such as Carex dissita and C virgata, and the flax-like turutu (dianella).

With the landscaped bush walk, you get two distinct layers — the tall-growing species and the lower layer, used basically as a ground cover.

The surface of the path through your bush can be mowed or covered in bark mulch. A seat somewhere along the way is a great idea, so you can stop and enjoy what you’ve created.

If you have a native-covered hillside, the addition of a bush walk at the bottom gives you a way to interact with the bush that might otherwise be inaccessible. This was the case for Bruce and Angela Spooner of Mincher Gardens, Coatesville. Their property, listed as a Garden of National Significance by the NZ Gardens Trust, has a stunning bush back drop on the other side of the creek that borders their property. By adding a bush walk on their side of the creek, they have brought the beautiful native forest into their garden.

Bruce and Angela began work on their bush walk in 2003. Today, it is a cool, green haven at the bottom of their lovely garden, a private walk way where they can stroll with visitors on a summer’s day, or perhaps enjoy an evening glass of wine at one of the strategically placed viewing platforms which allow a vista of the creek.


Everything you hauled down there in your truck or trailer was unceremoniously tossed into a crusher, the contents of which were carted off to become landfill. Fast forward to the present and, as the result of a community initiative spearheaded by local man Alan Watkinson in 2005, the dump has been re-located and transformed to a thriving recycling centre. Run by Helensville Enterprises Trust, the Transfer Station (which is open on Fridays from 10am – 2pm and on Saturdays from 8am – 12pm) now has beautiful, productive gardens, a few happy chooks and a fantastic shop where your rubbish becomes someone else’s inexpensive treasure. Subsidised by the Council, it employs local people to run the shop and to help with sorting. Extra labour comes from dedicated volunteers like gardeners Pat Stewart and Tess Tibbitt, who explains the rewards that can be gained from helping out, “People feel helpless about the amount of stuff we throw away, but once you get them sorting they feel like they’re participating.”

When I visited on a recent Saturday morning the place was humming with a sense of purpose – one woman whose freezer had died wanted to know where to put her large bag of rotting meat and vegies, another was in the shop looking for preserving jars for the quinces she’d been given by a neighbour while another had brought her small grandson to look at the gardens. No doubt he found the sight of the toilet pans full of thriving plants well worth the trip.

Bronwyn Alexander, who has been employed as the Waitakere Refuse and Recycling Transfer Station’s Hazard Waste Officer for 16 years, is also the Helensville Transfer Station Manager. From Bronwyn I learned that while this is no cushy job – there’s no power or running water, for example, and the work can be hard going on miserable winter days – she gets great satisfaction from it. “There’s huge value in stopping stuff going to landfill, so the biggest thing we can do is to educate people to reduce, re-use, recycle,” she says. And as for those difficult, hard-to-resolve rubbish issues, Bronwyn says, “We can always find a solution. We can do anything!”

Bronwyn’s can-do attitude can be found elsewhere in the community, and working together is the key. Late last year the self-funded and community-owned Helensville District Health Trust teamed up with the Peacemakers Trust Retreat Centre in Parakai to run a weekend of workshops facilitated by Chris Ennis, who works with CERES, a not-for-profit, environment and education centre in Melbourne. The results of all the passion and energy generated at the workshops were extremely fruitful. While The Peacemakers Trust has been working in the local community for over 25 years, the impetus that the workshops initiated, explains Manager Andrew Connolly, was that “people started to dream about what else could happen here. We’re definitely in an exciting transition stage.”

One idea now being realised is a scheme where young people doing community service put their strength and energy to good use chopping donated trees into firewood to be supplied to elderly Helensville and Parakai residents once there is a dry stockpile. Plans are also underway to establish a community garden on the Peacemakers’ site. As Andrew and his wife Susannah see it, with the benefits of people growing their own healthy food and building relationships across generations and cultures, the gardens will address community health needs in a holistic way. Plans are also afoot at Peacemakers to expand their popular gardening courses with a view to educating the community about organic gardening and permaculture, and to eventually build a commercial kitchen to be used as a teaching space.

I can’t believe I have lived in Auckland for more than 20 years and have never before visited the open sanctuary on Tiritiri Matangi island.

Located 4km off Whangaparoa Peninsula, it’s practically on my doorstep. Tiri is known for its wildlife, such as tuatara and geckos, and its native birdlife, which includes takahe and kiwi.

Until now my only up-close experience of kiwi has been limited to zoo visits and I certainly never thought I would be able to see them in their natural environment. So earlier this year we booked to stay in the island’s bunkhouse over a weekend in May, hoping that in the course of our explorations we would see kiwi.

Carrying sleeping bags, head torches (for the night kiwi hunt) and daypacks with food for two days, Nicky and I boarded the ferry at Gulf Harbour with our excited children, Brianna (6) and Liam (4), for a leisurely 30-minute trip to the island. There we were greeted by the ranger and given a briefing on the island and its bio security requirements. We learned that the island is totally pest-free, that a large range of NZ’s native wild life (many endangered) live there and that the potential for destruction of life and habitat is very real. The massive amount of planting (250,000 - 300,000 trees) since the early eighties has restored the island from what was originally farmland to a thriving ecosystem of native bush sustaining an amazing cache of our country’s wildlife.

Our volunteer-guide greeted us and after loading our bags into the ranger’s ute, we set off on a leisurely walk through the well-maintained path into the bush. Exploring the Wattle Track first, I was struck by the overwhelming and varied sounds of bird life. Bird feeders encouraged the birds’ presence and seats were strategically placed so walkers could rest and take in the prolific

birdlife and surroundings in a leisurely manner. Signs along the tracks gave useful and interesting information. Added to that, the depth of knowledge shared by our volunteer-guide lifted our interest and understanding to a whole different level.

It was a very pleasant walk through a meandering track to the island’s lunch area and lighthouse, which is still functional and completely solar powered. We explored the area, taking in the amazing views back to Auckland and Rangitoto. A tea-break outside the gift shop and visitor centre provided the first of our many encounters with Greg, the cheeky takahe. We were warned about Greg, at 19 years of age the oldest takahe on the island. While human food isn’t all that good for him, we saw how he’s become very partial to and adept at stealing the unguarded sandwich. It was a perfect autumn day and we enjoyed relaxing and watching the many tui gorge themselves at their ‘nectar café’ outside the shop in the sunshine.

The well-presented gift/souvenir shop proved too hard to resist. Among the souvenirs we bought, the best ‘find’ was the tui nectar feeder, which we have now placed in one of our trees hoping to bring tui into our garden (these feeders are available by mail order). All the proceeds from the shop go back into the island’s on-going upkeep and restoration.

Once the sun went down, it was time get our daypacks stocked with water and snacks and the kids fitted up with warm clothes and head torches. With these torches covered with red cellophane (red light being undetectable to birds), Brianna and Nicky headed off to the beach to watch penguins come up to their nesting boxes at dusk, while Liam and I went in another direction to find kiwi. About half an hour into our search, we got a text message, “Kiwi half way down Wattle!” We charged over to the Wattle Track and, half way down the track right in front of us, much to Liam’s excitement and my amazement, we met our first kiwi fossicking at the edge of the path. We were surprised by its size – in the dim red light it appeared to be as big as a rugby ball. It’s now apparent to me just how vulnerable this flightless bird is to predators. Heading back up the path we briefly spotted another, smaller kiwi and the girls later reported spotting 2 others. We arrived back at the bunkhouse about 8.30pm, all totally in awe of what we had seen on our night’s adventure.

In the morning we listened to the dawn chorus – truly beautiful.

After a hearty breakfast and completing our chores (a condition of staying in the bunkhouse), we headed off again with our packed lunch to the Kawarau Track. The bush was beautiful, with an 800 – 1000 year old pohutukawa and fantastic bird life. Very impressive work has gone into the walkways to make them easy for young and old. Lunch at Hobbs Beach was followed by piggy-backing Liam back up the Wattle Track and back to the lighthouse, making our early afternoon tea snack a welcome necessity before we departed for the ferry home.

We bought a Supporters’ membership for the family for $25. It’s a great cause and fantastic to think that our precious wildlife is being preserved and a sanctuary we can all visit has been created. It’s great to do as a day trip but an overnight stay for the kiwi experience is definitely worth it. And when you go, remember to ask someone about Greg’s tragic love life!
