MEMBER MATTERS30 June marks the end of the membership year, and you should have already received a renewal email and form - if not, please contact Karen via email [email protected] you completed your 30 hours of professional development if you are a practicing member? In March we invited people to write articles for the newsletter and to consider joining the committee of management to gain hours under a category of professional development classed as “contributing to professional knowledge”. In April we explored the category of professional development known as “skill development”.In May we looked at the category of “Gaining New Information and Knowledge”, and I shared my PD activities list in the hope it might give you some ideas.This month we talk about the final category of professional development, Supervision. This category, under which you can accrue a maximum of 10 hours, includes:• Supervised practise for counsellors - This is based on 1 hour of supervision by a suitably qualified

supervisor for each 10 hours of clinical client contact time, up to a maximum of 10 hours per year. If you only practice as a counsellor the full hours of client sessions should be used to calculate clinical

contact time, and then your supervision requirement. If you practice in conjunction with another modality or other modalities, you only need to include the part of your practice that relates directly to counselling when calculating your supervision requirements. If you do not do any “straight” counselling in your practice, just other modalities, we still recommend that you get some supervision each year.

NB: Initially, you must provide the contact details of your supervisor and a copy of your supervision agreement and then you can submit your completed supervision hours each year.

• Professional Debriefing Sessions• Coaching – Life, High Performance, BusinessIf you have any questions about professional development please contact the Administrator via email [email protected].

COMMITTEE MATTERSWe propose to approve courses or workshops of a minimum of 1 day (or 8 hours which could be spread over a number of weeks) to a maximum of 80 hours (i.e. 10 days) of class contact/course content. Note: This is less than a certificate course which must be a minimum of 50 hours of training and 50 hours of study & clinical practise.The suggestion is that the Approved Trainer would need to provide the following information:• details of course content• information about the origins of the content• the number of hours of student content and home activities (if applicable)• the method of delivery• if there are any pre-requisites• details of any type of assessment (if applicable)• information about any co-facilitators• a proposed certificate of completionWe are also thinking that the fees for having a short course approved could be:• $50 for 1 course for 2 years • $90 for 2 courses for 2 years • $120 for 3 courses for 2 yearsThe Committee invites members to give us feedback on this proposal by 15 June 2019 - please email your thoughts to the Administrator using [email protected].

Need to be worthy fear of being undeservingSo many of our clients have issues around worth. Even as practitioners each time we take the next step in our personal and business growth we are faced with the question of ‘Am I worthy of more?’

Urchin Dryandra is a Living Essence for those who feel unworthy of better. Maybe their lives have not shown them anything other than being down-trodden and the underdog is possible. Wherever there is an unequal distribution of power in a relationship Urchin Dryandra can be used for the one who is with less power. I find it wonderful for People Pleaser personalities as they tend to sacrifice themselves for the sake of other’s happiness. In this way they often feel inferior and sad about this reality. It is a wonderful first step into changing this pattern of behaviour.

A familiar cry from clients is ‘I would never treat someone like this. Why do they do this to me?’ It is a harsh lesson that people don’t always treat us how we treat them. And not everyone is as kind, supportive or compassionate as we are. The reality that we are all different comes with some hard knocks for those in need of Urchin Dryandra. The essence supports them to realise that how we act is our choice and tells everyone who we are. They can still choose to be caring, nice and supportive of others but realise that if that treatment isn’t returned it’s not personal to them. It’s about the other person.

What's the best thing you ever did to grow your business?

WINTER HEALTHWinter has arrived!And I have to confess, I am a little excited that this wonderful season has arrived. Time to light the fire, rug up and cosy down. Spring, Summer and Autumn are high energy seasons that find us living a fast-paced lifestyle. Life isn’t a race, however, we tend to set a pace and live our life as if it is. Continually on the go doing, doing, doing. Winter is a season to be most grateful for, as it beckons us to step off the treadmill and gives us permission to change the pace of our day, take some restorative time and enjoy some relaxation time.As the days get shorter in daylight and the cold settles in, our general health and mental health can be at its most vulnerable.We need to prepare ourselves and consider ways to keep ourselves healthy. We need to be mindful that our health may be held hostage by people in the work-place, travelling on public transport, lined up at the check outs, sitting next to us in a café as they share sneezing, coughing, colds and flus. How do we take cover and protect ourselves against this invasion of germs? Our mental health may be at risk, due to the lower levels of sunlight and the need to stay indoors more often, which may cause feelings and symptoms of sadness and depression. This is known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and can have a chronic impact for some people. When our mental health is compromised, we may experience a higher level of stress and anxiety which then affects our general health and our immune system.So, to maintain good physical and mental health during the winter, it is important to take a holistic approach to wellness. An approach that includes a healthy diet, physical exercise, self-care, social support and a balanced work life.Here are a few ideas to keep you on top of your health game this winter:• Build your immune system – visit a naturopath

or health shop to purchase high quality organic herbal teas like lemon and chamomile to ease depression and anxiety, green teas to boost your antioxidant level, take vitamin supplements to increase your vitamin C and D intake. Have a flu injection (if that resonates as a health choice).

• Wash your hands frequently every day - this will protect you and others from the risk of spreading those nasties that cause illness.

• Boost your Vitamin D naturally when the sun appears – take a stroll and take a seat to absorb the wonderful warmth and Vitamin D boost.

• Self-care by having a spa or sauna – release muscle tension and stress from your body using one or both of these therapies. Your body will also enjoy a detoxification.

• Stress management – book a Reiki session to re-balance your energy centres and release stress and overwhelm.

• Exercise – outside … walking, running, bike riding or maybe you prefer inside … then head to the gym, do pilates or yoga … all help to keep a healthy winter fitness level and oxygen flowing through the bloodstream to keep your defence system strong and brain on top of its game.

• Meditation and relaxation techniques – deep belly breathing and stillness are so powerful in maintaining your presence in the moment. Health benefits are many when you commit to a regular practice.

• Test your master chef skills and cook up a storm of healthy meals – an increase of time spent indoors can lead to an increase in snacking on unhealthy foods, so make eating a mindful activity and find new tasty snacks and meals of tasty stews, soups and lots of veg, fruit, fish, protein etc.

• Watch your self-talk – that negative little voice that allows pessimistic thoughts to creep in, can make winter feel like it is full of doom and gloom. Regularly check in with yourself to stay self-aware and prompt yourself to change your thought patterns. If you already know what your negative voice tells you, take a little time to think of uplifting, positive thoughts that you can use when that negative pops in. Write them down and be prepared and you will see the world more positively.

• Be social – staying in touch with friends and having contact with people is important to keep you in your happy zone. Regular catch up with friends, walking/playing with the dog, listening to your favourite music or podcasts, joining a group of interest with like-minded people are just a few of many ways to stay connected.

• Get creative – why not take some time during winter to pursue a passion that has been laying dormant in your ‘to do one day’ box. A new project ticks lots of boxes for achievement, enjoyment, satisfaction and fun.

5

• Plan some down time at work – If you are one of those people who works non-stop to get as much done as possible, says ‘yes’ to everyone and takes on more than what you can do and carries a lot of stress at work … then you need some strategies to bring balance into your work day. There is a lot of evidence that shows we are much more productive after taking some time out from the hard slog. Walk away from your work zone – take regular mini- breaks, stretch, eat, drink, get some fresh air and most importantly take a few long deep belly breaths. Your mind and body will thank you for the break and your reward??? you will be more focused and achieve so much more in your day.

• Smile – this one simple gesture can have a big impact on your mood and energy level and on others around you. Use your beautiful smile and make a big difference to your world.

• And remember to ‘take it slow’ - cosy up on the couch with a snuggle up blanket and catch up on some sleep from time to time and take good care of yourself and those around you.

Mmmm! Lots of ideas to include over the next 3 months … and for me, there will be more books read cosied up by the fire, a jigsaw in the making on the table, lots of knitting, little pieces of fabric will appear for my patchwork, time for self-reflection and my inner journey and that big challenge, work-life balance.

So, what are you going to give yourself permission to do to keep a healthy mind and body this winter?

Stay warm, happy and healthy. Marg X

Profile

Name: Marg Bruechert

Name of Business: Zen Reflections

Where are you practicing? Newlyn, Victoria

Do you provide in person sessions only or do you also do online/distant work? I mainly do in person sessions at my private consulting room in Newlyn, however, I am working toward offering distant work. I am available within the Ballarat and Hepburn district for End-of-Life Doula services.

What are the main modalities you offer? Or what do you specialize in? I specialize in mind-body therapies and offer Holistic counselling, Personal Development programs, Reiki energy healing, Bach Flower Homeopathic remedies, Archetype – Life purpose program, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Time-Line Therapy, Thought Field Therapy (Tapping) and End-of-Life Doula & Grief support service.

What do you love about the work you do? What I love and value about my work, is the opportunity it gives me to connect, support and empower people during the difficult times in all stages of their life. Helping them to build self-awareness, confidence and find inner peace.

How did you get started in this work?

My passion for mind-body balance, personal transformation and grief support, grew during a time when I offered voluntary work; helping young children and teenagers work through grief and as a Lifeline counsellor. This work ignited a passion for me and I returned to study in the areas of social welfare, counselling, holistic therapies, reiki and more recently the End-of-Life Doula course.

What sort of results could people expect to get if they work with you? The holistic approach supports a person’s physical, emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing. This focus enables people to feel grounded, find clarity, re-energize and re-establish purpose in their life.

Testimonial: “Marg has helped me enormously over a period of time when I had to deal with extremely distressing and traumatic events in my life. Marg’s highly intuitive and deep understanding of the patterns, energies and behaviours that shape people’s lives and interactions with others, has been an absolutely vital support for me as I worked towards re-creating my life in ways that are more authentic and self-sustaining. Marg’s empathetic and deeply respectful ways of working are highly effective and very much to be recommended”. Kate – BALLARAT.

MINDFULNESS MOMENTSBy Kerrie ClaytonAttending mind-body classes, reading self-help and new age literature, and meditation can be fantastic tools for exploring mindfulness and bringing us back to ourselves.

I love those times each week when I am able to devote myself to the pursuit of peace. Maybe a morning meditation while the house is still quiet….or a weekly yoga class….or walking in nature of an afternoon. I call these my anchor points. These anchor points are my time to let go of my daily tasks and the running commentary in my head and for me to feel how I am….and who I am. Having one or more anchor points each week enables me to set a platform for mindfulness and simply being.

In daily life however this sense of peace and just being can become a little lost or side lined. The trouble is after my yoga class or walk or meditation I can quickly become tense and frazzled as I return to dealing with the demands of my life. It is not always easy to feel at peace while simultaneously organising kids, the house, fitting in paid work, caring for other dependants and any other multitude of things which keep us busy!

I believe we can also learn how to connect and be mindful as we go about the business of living, however, by incorporating smaller mindfulness moments to help bring us back to ourselves. If we have an established weekly pattern of mindfulness, through our anchor points, then sometimes it only takes a moment or two of inner reflection to bring us back to this sense of being. Yet in this moment we are letting go, becoming still, feeling peace and being mindful. A small moment but a big change in our mood, thought patterns and physiology.

Here are some of my favourite daily mindfulness moments which help me bring some balance back into my life:

1. Breathe - simply observe each breath as it comes in and out. Don’t try to change anything just observe;

2. Relax muscles - notice the tension that can be held in many areas and let it dissolve;

3. Flow – focus on the present, just doing one thing at a time, and enjoy the peace and ease this offers;

4. Connect to colour - enjoy the healing benefits of what is often right in front of our eyes. Blue and green especially are calming and balancing colours;

5. Just being - a few moments of doing nothing, just letting it all go, calms the mind and body.

You may already practise some of these or have others of your own. I believe having a small array of mindfulness moments can help us maintain a feeling of ease, peace and calm in our daily life. It is a wonderful gift we can give ourselves.
