Tai Chi MeditationTai Chi and Chi Kung are wellness practices that originated hundreds of years ago in China and are widely recommended by healthcare providers around the world today for their health benefits. Incorporating exercise and movement, meditation and stillness, music and silence, this class offers a variety of Tai Chi and Chi Kung practices for artful integration of body, mind, breath, and spirit. Appropriate for adults of all ages; movements are typically done standing but may be adapted for seated practices as well as other kinds of limitations. Meditaton and Movement in the GardenAppreciate Olbrich’s beauty in a new way - through movement and quiet reflection. Each class begins in quiet meditation followed by lightly-facilitated movement. During the second half, you will seek a special niche in the outdoor

gardens or Conservatory for a time of individual contemplation: soaking in the sights, sounds, smells, and textures. We will end each class by sharing our individual experiences through movement reflections. From these we will create a simple dance as a group. This 4-week class brings together the healing powers of both dance and nature, informed by dance/movement therapy and eco-psychology. The facilitator, Ann Wingate, MA, BC-DMT, DTRL, is a registered dance/movement therapist from the Hancock Center in Madison. No dance experience necessary. Discover Indigo Dyeing WorkshopSaturday, June 7, 10 am-1 pmJoin us for hands-on exploration in the basics of dyeing with a natural indigo vat. We will touch on the history and science of indigo, create a vat, and explore three shibori resist techniques: arashi shibori (pole-wrapped), nui shibori (sewn) and itajime (folded and clamped). You will leave with five cotton dish towels that you have patterned in the rich blue color for which indigo is famous. Plan to get messy - wear old clothes and shoes and bring one pair of rubber gloves and a plastic bag for carrying your work home. All other materials will be provided. Hand Papermaking and Paper Casting WorkshopLearn the basics of hand papermaking and paper casting with Greg Grummer, MFA and an Arnold Grummer certified papermaking instructor. He will show you how to make a finished sheet of handmade paper in less than10 minutes and a paper cast in less than 5 minutes. We will use recycled fibers for handmade sheets of paper and 100% cotton fiber for paper casting. You will make at least 3 sheets of handmade paper and several paper casts. No experience necessary.

Growing “Super Fruits” in WisconsinSaturday, November 22, 1-3 pmHave you been tempted by miraculous claims about exotic fruits and berries? You may wonder what is it about these fruits that lifts them out of the ranks of the ordinary into exalted superfruit status. In recent years, modern science has found a wide variety of plant nutrients in select plants. Those deemed “super” by nutrition scientists are packed with antioxidants, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. What’s even more amazing is that you can grow many of these plants in your yard! Join fruit afficionado John Holzwart and learn about superfruits like aronia, elderberry, sea buckthorn, cornelian-cherry dogwood, and how to grow them in Wisconsin.

Basic Flower Arranging with Native Plants and How to Grow ThemSaturday, December 6, 1:30-3 pmWouldn’t you like to be able to enjoy native plants indoors as much as the birds and insects do in your garden? Many native plants are long-lasting and beautiful in fresh summer bouquets, and they can be dried for winter arrangements. Mariette Nowak, author of Birdscaping in the Midwest, will discuss some of the best native plants to include in your landscape for cut flowers and foliage, including everything you need to create beautiful indoor arrangements. Herbal Gift Making: Hands-on, Interactive, and Fun!Saturday, December 13, 1-5 pmJoin herbalist Linda Conroy for this fun, hand-on class. You will make approximately 10 herbal gift items that you can give to your friends, family, or keep for yourself. The classroom will be set up in stations and you will rotate through, making a different item at each station. Everyone will make lip balm, body spray, felted soap, herbal condiments, herbal salts for foot and bath, lotion bar, dream pillow, herbal tea blend, and much more! Join the Book Discussion Group at Olbrich!Join fellow garden enthusiasts and book lovers as we discuss fiction and non-fiction books about plants, gardens, nature, and the environment. The Olbrich Gardens Book Club is a book discussion group hosted by Olbrich’s Schumacher Library staff where readers come together to discuss a book and share in the reading experience. The Greater Madison Writing Project, in partnership with Olbrich Botanical Gardens, is sponsoring a camp for young writers entering grades 3-8. Young writers use Olbrich’s gardens and conservatory as inspiration for writing. Through brainstorming, drafting, revising, and editing, led by experienced teachers and working with peers, participants produce a finished piece of writing that is then published. Young writers share their favorite pieces of writing from the week with their families during an evening celebration on the last day.
