AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF KIDNEY PATIENTS2

On behalf of the AAKP Board of Directors, it is my honor to welcome you to our National Patient Meeting. AAKP is America’s oldest and largest fully independent patient lead kidney organization and your involvement helps us honor our educational and advocacy mission and prepares you to help other patients who need to learn more about how to manage and prevail over their disease.

AAKP follows a national strategy that balances educational activities with a very strong national advocacy effort. This strategy is based on particular principles. First, we honor the principle of no surprises among government officials and allied organizations - AAKP is about being effective and impactful - not simply loud. Second, we seek out opportunities to involve our patient members in the policy and educational efforts of their government and allied kidney organizations. Third, AAKP is committed to providing high quality health education materials and advocacy training to our members at a very low cost - and we do not charge to be a member of AAKP. These principles and this strategy have helped us grow and maintain our distinction in the kidney community.

This year’s Convention Committee has worked diligently, with your input, to create a timely and educational program to further equip you with information designed to make you more effective at advocating both your personal decisions regarding your care and our issues as patients in the larger policy arena.

Some highlights of the program include AAKP’s most recent policy achievements and what they mean for your care now and in the future, the latest innovations and emerging technologies and practical tools to help you amplify your voice in the public square. You will have the opportunity to learn from leading renal and healthcare professionals; Federal government representatives from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention; the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services; the National Institute of Health; the Veterans Health Administration; industry representatives; and fellow patients who are living their best life possible with kidney disease.

Social media is a growing and driving presence in all we do. We strongly encourage you to take advantage of the Social Media Center during your time at this meeting – tweet, post, or blog about your meeting experiences in real-time. Take advantage of the complimentary WiFi offered to our meeting attendees and be sure to use our meeting hashtag #kidneypatients18. Most importantly, like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter – start a conversation.

From the entire AAKP Board and professional staff, thank you once again for joining us in Florida!

Welcome to the 2018 American Association of Kidney Patients National Meeting! We are excited to have you here in St. Petersburg. We have three days of amazing sessions for you- including information on how to be an empowered patient as well as information about staying active, understanding your lab values, diet, dental health and clinical trials. This meeting has information about all types of treatment for kidney disease- from dialysis to transplant. This year we also have sessions for family members and caregivers only- allowing these important people the opportunity to learn about issues important to them.

Please don’t miss the popular lunch with the experts, where you can enjoy a meal and conversation about a topic important to you. This year we are excited to offer two days of lunches with experts! Friday’s lunch speakers are the ultimate experts- patients and family members. Each day, join us in the exhibit hall, where you can learn more about resources that can help you. Be sure to join us at the awards banquet to learn more about the great work of our AAKP members. Use the conference hashtag #kidneypatients18 and post away about the meeting on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Please be sure to let me or any of the AAKP staff know how we can help you, and enjoy your time in St. Petersburg!

Despite the health benefits that more frequent home hemodialysis may provide to those with chronic kidney disease, this form of therapy is not for everyone. Home hemodialysis with the NxStage System One requires a patient and partner who are committed to being trained on and following the guidelines for proper system operation.

The reported benefits of home hemodialysis may not be experienced by all patients.

The NxStage System One is a prescription device and, like all medical devices, involves some risks. The risks associated with hemodialysis treatments in any environment include, but are not limited to, high blood pressure, fluid overload, low blood pressure, heart-related issues, and vascular access complications. The medical devices used in hemodialysis therapies may add additional risks including air entering the bloodstream, and blood loss due to clotting or accidental disconnection of the blood tubing set. When vascular access is exposed to more frequent use, infection of the site, and other access related complications may also be potential risks. Patients should consult with their doctor to understand the risks and responsibilities of home and/or more frequent hemodialysis using the NxStage System One.

Certain risks are unique to the home. Treatments at home are done without the presence of medical personnel and on-site technical support. Patients and their partners must be trained on what to do and how to get medical or technical help if needed.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATIONWarnings and PrecautionsSerious hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylactic-type reactions, some of which have been lifethreatening and fatal, have been reported in patients receiving parenteral iron products. Patients may present with shock, clinically significant hypotension, loss of consciousness, and/or collapse. Monitor patients for signs and symptoms of hypersensitivity during and after hemodialysis until clinically stable. Personnel and therapies should be immediately available for the treatment of serious hypersensitivity reactions. Hypersensitivity reactions have been reported in 1 (0.3%) of 292 patients receiving Triferic® in two randomized clinical trials. Iron status should be determined on pre-dialysis blood samples. Post dialysis serum iron parameters may overestimate serum iron and transferrin saturation.

Adverse ReactionsThe most common adverse reactions (>3% and at least 1% greater than placebo) in controlled clinical studies include: headache, peripheral edema, asthenia, AV fistula thrombosis, urinary tract infection, AV fistula site hemorrhage, pyrexia, fatigue, procedural hypotension, muscle spasms, pain in extremity, back pain, and dyspnea.
